When will Wonder Man lays the smack down on someone?

#1 Posted by spider11211 (1141 posts) - - Show Bio

So currently in Uncanny Avengers Wonder man is a pacifist....how long will that last?

#2 Posted by joshmightbe (24692 posts) - - Show Bio

I hate how Marvel treats Wonder Man, he's got a great power set and an interesting back story but they keep messing him up.

#3 Posted by tigerkaya (1262 posts) - - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: He does have those outstanding moments of KO'ing Wolverine and putting Rulk into a submission.

#4 Posted by spider11211 (1141 posts) - - Show Bio

I know, he has massive potential and yet...we get nothing. This pacifist thing could pay off, it may be a transition period to get him from where he was back to hero status again.

I hope so anyway.

Also what happened to the buddy cop vibe between him and Beast? I miss that.

#6 Posted by spider11211 (1141 posts) - - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: They still are tight, Beast stuck up for him recently.

#7 Posted by youmessinwithme (1182 posts) - - Show Bio

lol never, he gets over powered by the Gryphon who in turn gets one punched by Spider-man.

it takes him and his brother going full out to bring down mister hide(WM was kneeing him in the face and GR slit his hamstring) who inter KO's himself just by running into Thor's chest, But Wonder man is Supposed to be on Thor's level in strength.

Wonder man's powers

Super strength (described as Sentry level and Thor level)

Durability (almost diamond hard skin with even harder muscle and bone tissues)

Super Speed (around ms Marvel's level maybe higher)

Flight

Energy Projection (blasts and omni directional it looks like)

Ionic energy form

Ability to convert other objects into ionic energy and disperse it's molecules

Size manipultion (against atlas)

teleportation

yet this guy has been beaten by C listers.... Marvel gives Wonder man no respect.

No time soon I hope. I like the Pacifist angle. He is such a powerful character it is nice to seem him struggle to hold back.

They've got a story together in A+X #12 if that makes up for it in very small way.

That would be great, but then again I have is solo books.

I agree that Marvel doesn't give Wonder Man enough respect strength wise, but I do like how they actually developed his personality, which makes the pasificsm possible. I would also love to see another Wonder Man and Beast series!

#14 Posted by spider11211 (1141 posts) - - Show Bio

I think this will build to a point when he will have to use violence and he will open a can and whip some A**!

I'm also really curious how his "enhanced" powers will turn out. Since he started(and stopped) leaking ionic energy he seems to have gotten a serious power upgrade, most prominently taking out the Red Hulk like hes some kind of random henchman.

I actually really like his current pacifist behavior though, makes it easier to write such a powerful character without having to artificially downgrade his abilities non stop (hello Thor) to make the story work. I'd just wish he would let loose from time to time at least, so we get to see some proper feats from him ;)

Does anyone actually like Wonder Man? That dudes lame.

#18 Edited by spider11211 (1141 posts) - - Show Bio

I think he is cool and deserves more attention.

Do you know his history? He is not lame.

That was actually asked in the last issue.

I think he'll be more interesting if he never breaks, honestly. I mean, we've all seen a super-powerful character pushed to the breaking point (including Wonder-man himself) lots of times before, but how often do we see a character really do the non-violent thing?

I've been thinking of this recently since reading the last arc of Astonishing X-Men (62-65), in which Iceman finally embraces his full god-like powers; as another character points out in the story, it was never really Iceman's potential for being so powerful that made him a great man, it was his super-human level of restraint. I mean, Wonder-man's really as powerful as a writer needs him to be; but seeing him punch a planet into another dimension (or whatever), isn't half as impressive as knowing that he could do that and seeing him not throw a punch at all. He has to be more clever, and that's always more interesting.

It's not like his powers aren't good for anything besides fighting, he's basically Superman, how often does Superman need to throw a punch? Personally, I think this pacifist thing is the most interesting thing they've done with Wonder-man, possibly ever.

It's interesting to have a powerful character take on a pacifist's stance although it didn't prevent him from scaring some terrorists a while back to help Captain America out just by his presence.

At least it makes Simon stand out amongst the rest of the Avengers (outside of his extreme powers).

I do like how this is adding to the depth of the character but you can just see something happening that forces Wonder man to open a can and tear a person apart at one point.

I think this could lead to a good story and provide even more depth to the character.

What? Avengers and New Avengers Annuals were f***ing brilliant, of those rare issues reminding you that Bendis can be a good writer. He showed Avengers truth is their face while they treated him like some criminal, for what? For disagreeing with them? Too bad the seeds of doubt in the society weren't explored since. I really want to hear a reason for him to get back to be an Avenger again, it's kinda odd after what he did.

#24 Posted by spider11211 (1141 posts) - - Show Bio

I think he is there now to try to change them.

Really I hated those annuals it just makes Wonder Man a moron for ignoring all the actual good the Avengers have done before Bendis screwed the whole comic entirely. If anything the annuals just paints Bendis as very pro X-men and I'm grateful he's on the X-men titles where he belongs.

And that my friends is Wonder Man laying the smack down on someone.

Actually, he did stated he acknowledges "the good the Avengers have done as a team and as individuals", so he wasn't that biased =) He just raised the question "who watches the watchmen?" in what he received as an answer, their "untouchable status" to not be discussed.

"-Simon Williams, you're under arrest!

-I don't acknowledge you authority over me!"

This was badasss.

Simon's brother is pushing him...it may be closer than we think.

The Grim Reaper may be making a Grim mistake.

Wonderman is a perennial second stringer and, despite a few attempts to establish him as top tier, has always been more of a punching bag than a true powerhouse. I really dont see the need to change that or why people are excited at the idea of him being some kind of heavy hitter. Its better to have some characters play these roles than have every character super-duper-powerful or constantly leapfrogging each other IMO.

#35 Posted by youngwonderman (52 posts) - - Show Bio

@fifthchild: Everyone has their own favorite hero, and they get excited when they are going to have a great showing of that character.

I personally like Wonder Man because of the way his powers work. They've made him immortal, but then he has to deal with being not human anymore. And I love how the writers have been adding to his personality more, with his disagreement of the Avengers and his pacifism, but I can't wait to see him in the action again. (I also liked his team, the Revengers)

Fair enough as from your avatar I can see you are a fan. I can totally understand that. I guess coming from outside that perspective I dont think WM climbing the power scale is necessarily a good thing - partly because it generally means someone else has to take a tumble, especially if he is gonna "put a hurting on someone".

Simon has been high on the scale for years in terms of power, I think the issue has been with what writers have done with the character. I think he has a great amount of potential that has not been explored.
