Stark shouldn't even be in the top 5 of Avengers leaders.

I think Cap is better in the field but I have serious doubts he can lead the business half of the Avengers. Without a financial sponsor/backer taking care of the logistics (e.g., SHIELD, the military), a team led by Cap would have to shutter it's doors before too long. I always saw it as Cap being the field-leader, but Stark manages the money and is therefore the de facto leader of the Avengers as an organization.

Stark never really ran the Avengers finances he just set up a fund for them....or more accurately he probably had Pepper set it up. Remember Stark isn't the most responsible guy.

QFT. Half of the worst things that happened to the team were his fault; indirectly and/or directly.

Captain America. He's mere presence demands respect for him. He has the skills for battle (like strategy and planning). He is a symbol. And that, I think, is one of the qualities that cannot just be picked up by anyone. Stark is pretty cool, but he doesn't have what it takes to be a leader compared to Captain America. People have to respect you and believe you. Stark can step up sometimes, but in a more permanent basis, it's always Captain America.

I don't know, but whenever I see the Avengers, I just picture Captain America in the front and center. Not anyone else. Kind of like Superman in JLA, just way less boring.

    Hank Pym :)

He was awesome when he led them Slott's Mighty Avengers.

I shortened your quote a bit because I was especially bonkers over Slott's run on Mighty Avengers. I miss mad scientist Wasp so very, very, very much. Gage barely let the dust clear before abandoning the Wasp identity and the aggressively out-of-left-field antics of Slott's version of Pym. I have never loved that character more.

Back to the topic at hand. Seriously: Cap
