Avengers
Team » Avengers appears in 7704 issues.
The Avengers are Earth's mightiest heroes and foremost super-team... "There came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born - to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand! Heed the call, then - for now, the Avengers Assemble!"
Off My Mind: Do the Avengers Actually Avenge Anyone?
do The Foo Fighters really fight Foo?
were The Grateful Dead Really that grateful? or even that dead?
do Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers really break as many hearts as we are lead to believe. maybe they are rock 'n' roll stars.
these are the questions that keep me up at night.
avenge can also mean to get even with, to pay back or to punish. punish and as Frank Castle himself said "... Revenge is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No, not vengeance. Punishment."
"avenge" doesn't need to involve death. they lock criminals up in confinement. away from the sun. take away their freedom, ruin their plans and shatter their dreams. some would say that's "punishment" enough.
what matters is what something is, not what it is called.

They don't avenge anyone. They chose that name because it grabs people to buy the book.
they should become The Revengers, and just sit around waiting for someone to mess with them so they may then retaliate with some sweet-ass pranks or something.
But when was the last time a superhero was put on trial?
Bucky Barnes, Trial of Captain America about a YEAR ago.
Also, remind me, how is Simon not a villain?!

They avenged Wonder Man. Twice.
...Ungrateful ass.
HA!!!! LMAO!!! Word, folk.
Seriously though. They should do just what they're doing. as the 90's taught us (and cry for justice reminded), proactive hero teams never work...
I have sometimes wondered why they were called that. I always thought they should be preemptive and stop killing, though I suppose they can't always save everyone, especially when civilians are attacked before they know of anything. Now, I think it's more symbolic than anything. Traditional? Perhaps keeping it because they want to keep the same name, possibly for some sense of nostalgia.
Tony. I swear some of these articles you write just for response. O focurse they avenge people. They avenge the folks said bad guy at the moment has already hurt or killed or traumatised previously, the ones who's names (which, of course are irrellevent and will never be) arent worth being heard by earth's mightiest. Hell maybe the thinker has a thing for killing strippers inbetween theories, maybe ultron likes picking up homeless, studying their innards then dumping them back on the streets, and maybe Loki was mephistoesque, ruinging lives for pleasure behind the curtain. they avenge alright, just not tony stark or Reed Richards.
In short, they avenge, just most of the time its not personal
apologies for the grammar, but I'm tired and just don't care :P
I think maybe they were named Avengers to avenge any civilian that was harmed by the villains they fight. It seems like they are saying to the world whoever were affected by these villains in anyway, we will avenge them for you. So I think you can look at it as they are just avenging the world in a sense.
It's not about avenging, as that indicates they are too late to save those from persecution. Matters ought to concern justice, like a.... justice league, oh wait. The Retributors is more their speed, often reacting, and thus not being pro-active, but retribution would be "an eye for an eye," so they are THE-WAIT-'TIL-IT-HAPPENS-ERS, a mouthful I know.
Ironic that the one time closest to what I would call them actually avenging something, *in the Grand Theft America arc by taking back America and killing 90% of the invading team + allies*, they're called the Ultimates....even though the baddies in that were kind of out for vengeance themselves- the plot thickens.
Even though I've never been a very big fan of the avengers, I think they are a more entertaining team than the ultimates who just go for the special effects trend rather than the interesting scenarios. I really don't like the Ultimate Cap.
The Avengers is a cool name! And sure they don't do much avenging as they're superheroes (they have avenged but it's not their mission) Mostly they fall into the categories of defending & protecting which Defenders got snapped up by Dr Strange & The Protectors was owned by Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds are go and then later by Malibu comics)
It's just a name. The Oakland Raiders have never gotten in ships and invaded the English coast! The Orlando Magic sounds like something from a show in Vegas! The St Louis Cardinals are not birds nor members of the clergy!!
I also think Avengers sounds better than Captain America's Superhero Team And We'll Avenge You, which can be an ancronym CASTAWAY! (Castaway copyright Kevin Curley 2012)
Because Moon Knight ,Ghost Rider .Punisher dislike team-work ,and they don't call themself superheroes/
WAAY back in the mid/late 80's there were a few issues of the Avengers stopping Terminus. Afterwards, Captain America was understandably upset and how they failed to prevent the Savage Land being destroyed by Terminus and how they were only able to save a few of the people who lived there. Starfox pointed out that they stopped Terminus from destoying the world and at the very least they AVENGED those who died.
That is how I define their group name. The heroes protect those who have no chance against supervillians, and avenge those they failed to save in time.
the avenged the wasp at the end of secret invasion by manhandling all those skrulls at the end of the series im pretty sure skrulls died plus ms marvel i saw a dude die in that ms marvel comic where she fights the skrulls and moments later shes ripping those same skrulls heads off
They Avenge the people that have been wronged by evil-doers.
This, and they chose the name because it sounded cool.
Depends on the story. You could make an argument that every time they put down Kang, they are avenging the death of the Swordsman. Every time they take out one of the Masters of Evil, they are avenging the assault on Jarvis. It really depends on the context you place an individual adventure in. There are lots of Avengers stories where civilians die, & the team comes in and resolves the situation. Just because they don't state up front, at the beginning of every adventure that they're avenging "this guy" or "that person" doesn't mean that their name doesn't ring true.
This.
