Avengers fails at making an emotional connection?

I mean, the movie is pretty good, is better that Thor and Captain America, but Ironman 1 is a better movie.

I just didnt feel any emotional connection with the movie, great cgi, pretty good action for a hollywood made movie, still not as great as Donnie Yen action scenes.

What is the continued purpose of these threads? I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but is it really deserving of it's own thread? A blog post would've sufficed.

Is there any movie where people don't? For some reason however I see more desperate people trying to convince others that this movie was overrated than any other hero movie I've seen.

I wasn't looking for an emotional connection. I didn't want love between Thor and Jane, I didn't want to go in and feel sad for Bruce and his condition, I didn't want to feel angry about the people Loki was killing.

I wanted to see the Avengers come together, struggle with their personalities and having to work together, and watch them destroy Loki's army.

Too many people are taking it upon themselves to "convince" others or "spread the word" that this movie is overrated as if they were Moses and it was a God appointed task.

News flash: Our enjoyment of the movie does not require for everyone to have loved it. Nor were we going in expecting our lives to be changed by the viewing of righteous deeds.

I went to see a great superhero movie with action and that's what I got.

That's a huge oversimplification. Are they all popcorn fun films? Yes. But the writing/quality of jokes in Avengers is much sharper than Transformers, it's not as preachy as Avatar (nor does it attempt to evoke as much emotion), and the action- at least for Marvel fans- is massively more enjoyable.

When Phil Coulson was killed, a good 80% of the theater (it was a full house) all collectively went "Awe..."

I'd say that that qualifies for an "emotional connection." But hey, to each his own.

Also Captain America versus Loki in Germany. That scene was nicely done, especially the old man's words to Loki. Sure we all know what it's a reference to, but I for one was glad they gave Cap those kinds of moments in the film as reminders of America's past and Cap's motivations. I'd also cite Widow and Hawkeye's interactions. Not to mention her conversation with Loki. So agreed. Though I guess it depends on your idea of an emotional connection.

    Completley forgot about that scene.

That's true a lot of people in my theater got bummed out as well.

And yeah comparing it to those movies is a bit hard to do as they are each different types of films.

That scene got to me too.  In some ways, I think his death was a metaphor for those occasions when fans are really let down by their heroes.

It was great, if you talk about action because, TDK had a bigger emotional/moral feel, more inspirational.

Why does every movie have to be inspirational or emotionally stirring? Is it a crime to just want to enjoy something for 2 and a half hours with out having to think. I have enough real world crap to think about I go to movies to take a break from all that.

Really? I pretty much feltwith most of the characters. Widow trying to be tough/ redeem herself for past sins. cap feling out of place, Thor desperately trying to make piece with his brother, Coulson being adorably fanboyish. Tony's doubts of his own heroism. Hulk........wanting to smash stuff.

Personally, isn't that what movies/video games/novels are all about? To merely escape the limitations of reality. I don't want to be stuck in a overwhelmingly emotional film for 2 and a half hours if nothing is going to happen.

I think he overstated a bit, I don' think he meant the film will make you cry or put you in a deep contemplative state...he could have IDK. I interpreted it more as you don't seem to care about the villains facing the heroes or anything, In other films the showdowns have build up, and good juxtaposition between characters...it registers....the last 30 minutes of the film was more or less the Avengers blowing up and stabbing aliens, CGI, Hulk whipping Loki around, more CGI

The movie was great, just as I think Batman and even Spider-Man will be, so I don't get why people are trying to faults in the film. What's wrong with just simply enjoying it for the amazing superhero movie it is?

I've found The Avengers the most funniest superhero movie ever. But it didn't give me any real emotion, any breathtaking moment unlikely TDK or Spiderman 2. It was funny, well written, well directed and with good actors (Tom Hiddleston was awsome to me).

I can't understand how you can compare a martial arts movie to a Super hero movie, I don't get that! Just about every martial arts movie will have more action scenes, because they are Martial Arts Movies (hint!) What you stated is really like comparing Bruce Lee to Donnie Yen they don't compare! Apparently the emotion that you are feeling is disappointment toward the Avengers, which you should have named the thread. don't delude or sugar coat what you're trying to compare a clip from a martial arts film , I could have done that using one of the old Run Run Shaw martial arts flicks, but whats the point in comparing Martial Arts to the Avengers. I'm just saying!

Emotional connection? You mean me thinking Tony Stark would be AWEsome to hang around with? Do you mean laughing out loud at the jokes on the movie? You mean feeling bad for Black Widow then feeling like **** she was acting. She got me. How about feeling like "I cant wait for Loki to get his A$$ whooped."

THISS!!! Not to mention the whole movie made me want to be a superhero so bad! and I definitely got a little teary eyed with Agent Coulson

I've seen it 3 times already and I still laugh at all the jokes, still get this cheesy smile when it starts getting crazy, and I still think it's the best superhero movie ever made, it had EVERYTHING...everything to my pleasing anyway.

I personally thought the movie did have quite a lot of emotion but was more an action movie, which I am totally cool with as that's the reason I went.

    The most emotional moment was

when Agent Coulson died. I shed a few tears. That being said I have teared up and cried in a few movies- Armageddon, the Notebook, etc. Heck, I bawled my eyes out in Bambi and still do. RIP the Son of Cool.

I went into the movie knowing it wouldn't be as philosophical and complex as the Dark Knight ( and the Dark Knight Rises hopefully will be), and I loved the fact it was a predominantly action movie. I also thought the personalities seemed right and meshed really well. Aside from some minor things (Nathasa not being Russian) and some major things (Hank and Jan's absences), I thought it was a great movie.

I cry at Old Yeller, ....every....time....

But the Avengers movie was simply awesome. I didn't have any problems with the movie. But I guess some people just can't except the fact that maybe a movie could be excellent for just sitting back and relaxing to with friends. and yes Agent Coulson's death was super emotional to me at least and it sounds like to others as well.

    • Chuckled
    • Outright laughed
    • Teared up
    • 'Awweed'
    • Gasped

I'd say that sufficiently covers the criteria for emotional connection, right?

You mean feeling bad for Black Widow then feeling like **** she was acting. She got me.

OH MY GOD YES. I was so pissed for a minute there and then she threw it around in everybody's face. That was actually my favorite scene from the movie, I think.
