Avengers #1 Review
The Good
Overall, I think the title is going to raise lots of attention in the eyes of Marvel readers, as well as Avengers fans, alike. Brian Michael Bendis did an excellent work on building the Avengers to what it is now and creates an easy access for writers of the title. Jonathan Hickman did a great job in raising the hype of the Avengers and setting new boundaries for the title, which will have to be fulfilled further along the story to understand more of what's going on. He goes directly into the plot with no upcoming or prologue to it, making you think if this story is a continuity of something and has you questioning the events before Ex Nihilo wanted to destroy the Planet of Mars.
As of now, we know that this character is a new villain to the Marvel Universe and reason being shouldn't be mocked, nor looked down upon considering how much of a threat he is to the Avengers, having Cap to recruit members into the Avengers to help save the Planet along with humanity that is on it! (just pick up the issue already). With the new recruits of the Avengers, this makes you question, is he really a new global threat to the world, specifically to the Avengers and will the new members have what it takes to defeat this nemesis?!?! We're going to have to wait for the next issue to find out, luckily the team behind the title are releasing two issues a month making you think this story is going to be INTENSE! And lots of money being spent.
However, I do have I high hopes on Hickman's saga and think he fits in with this title really well, knowing that he came from writing one of the best team title series, to date which was the Fantastic Four. With Jerome Opena, coming from working alongside Rick Remender in big titles such as Uncanny X-Force and Deadpool, you know that the drawings are going to be very detailed and characteristic. They both worked on team titles before and know not to over flood the pages with a bunch of characters and take the panels step-by-step in order to sketch a more open story rather than just one side of it.
The Bad
One of the things that really got on my mind, and I accidently typed this in capital letters before noticing, is that you somewhat get caught off-guard within the first pages of the issue, making you over think if you missed out on a crossover event that took place after Flashpoint. Although as the story goes on, you get to know the conflicting plot, you still want some questions to be answered, which I think Hickman's going to be filling in on with this next issues. I think having the original Avengers at the start was a great idea, but having new recruits to fill in for them, you'd think there going to have to impress us more than anything to get our credits in this roster change and are going to have to give it their all in order to be ahead of what's coming to them considering how the the first string matched up against the new villain.
The Verdict
The Verdict is...yeah, definitely pick up this issue. Your going to want to be ahead of this title, as I think it's going to get pretty intense in the next following issues. Remember they're releasing two issues a month, so keep your wallets filled and coin jars emptied, cause it's gonna be a pricey couple months!
