Marvel Comics
Marvel's version of Atlantis first appeared in Marvel Comics vol 1 #1 in 1940.In the Marvel universe, Atlantis is a the city under the sea ruled by Namor, the Sub-Mariner.
It was originally a small continent with human settlements but this all changed 21,000 years ago during an event known as the Great Cataclysm and it was swallowed by the depths of the sea. This event was caused by King Kamuu when he tried to defend it from the Deviants of Lemuria by opening the city's magma pits. Several settlements survived including Atlantis and Netheria, as they had built a glass dome to shield each before this catastrophe took place.
Sole survivors included such beings as Varnae, Stygyro and Dakhimh the Enchanter. But it was only 13,000 years later than the city of Atlantis was reinhabited, as it was discovered by some Homo Mermanus who made it their first mighty city, and becoming the Atlanteans.
After 500 years living in Atlantis another city was rebuilt, Lemuria, by Atlanteans who left Atlantis. And so it was that the Lemurians differed from their former people when they discovered the Serpent Crown in their ruins and they began to develop a more serpentine appearance.
Homo Sapiens and Homo Mermanus have interacted several times, usually with hostility as the Homo Mermanus have invaded the surface world multiple times. Though the current ruler of Atlantis, Prince Namor fought against the Axis Powers in World War II.
DC Comics
DC's version of Atlantis first appeared in Adventure Comics vol 1 #260 in 1959.Atlantis in DC Comics was an ancient society of magic, the source of the Homo Magi race and the undersea dwellers who diverged into the Merfolk and citizens of Poseidonis.
The society of Atlantis was established on a small island continent by ancestors of humanity who had learned the ways of magic, which was a far stronger force in the universe in those times.
When the magic cycle again turned and the age of great magic began to end, refugees from the mystical Gemworld were allowed to settle in the sanctuary of Atlantis. These would intermix with mortal humans to become the ancestors of the Homo Magi race. A race of aliens who had joined the Atlantean civilization, descended from the Hunter/Gatherers who had killed the last dinosaurs, would eventually leave for Skartaris where they became known as the Red Moon Gods.
When the last great magic faded and Atlantis sank into the sea, some used magic or technology to adapt to the new environment and become the modern Atlanteans. After ages of wandering the oceans, they would eventually rediscover the locations of the Lost Continent and build new civilizations on the ruins of the old. Some of the alien technology was eventually rediscovered as well, so that today, the people of Poseidonis and its offshoot settlements are in some areas of science motre advanced than surface dwellers.
Other refugees fled to the far corners of the surface world, mixing Homo Magi genes with those of mainstream humanity, and seeding their legends, art, architecture and bits of their remaining technology throughout the Earth, contributing to the development of the next age of civilization.
