Ash has diced enough deadites on the page, I'd say he certainly qualifies for the distinction of “unofficial comics superhero.” Hell, it doesn’t need that different of a perspective to view EVIL DEAD as a traditional origin story that sets up the full-tilt superheroics of ARMY OF DARKNESS. Ash has catchphrases, powers and even a cape sometimes. Short of a domino mask, there’s not a lot separating him from your usual crimefighters.
Anyway, we recently received a press release informing us that an EVIL DEAD remake’s actually going to happen with the blessing and involvement of both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. It’ll be written and directed by newcomer Fede Alvarez after he made some heads spin with his giant robo short “Panic Attack.” Surprisingly enough, that script's being re-written right now by Diablo Cody, who made a name for herself as a screenwriter with JUNO.
As hopeful as I was to see Raimi and Campbell twist the chainsaw on for a fourth EVIL DEAD outing with an A-budget, it’s probably more sensible keep it tight and do it this way. My other question would be about whether this going to be the straight horror of the first EVIL DEAD or the black comedy of EVIL DEAD II, but… seeing as how Cody’s involved, I imagine it’ll probably be more of the latter with a bit of the bite her horror comedy, JENNIFER’S BODY, had.
Even as is this on track, it'll still be a spell before we see anything. If you want a little taste of what it could be, though, check out Avarez's head-turned "Panic Attack" below...
