Zack Snyder Working on New Star Wars Film

The 'Man of Steel' director is developing a new Star Wars movie, but it's not episode Seven!

There's still plenty of rumors about who will direct Episode VII, but it looks like the 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder will get to play around with a different part of the massive Star Wars film universe. According to Vulture, the Man of Steel director is behind a Star Wars title for Lucasfilm and it'll potentially be connected to the new trilogy.

No Caption Provided

The website claims the movie will focus on Jedi and be loosely based on 1954's Seven Samurai. They don't know yet where it'll fall in the Star Wars timeline, but according to one insider, it will probably take place after Return of the Jedi.

More lightsaber fights and with Snyder directing? Count me in. Just imagine any of the amazingly cool fight sequences in 300... but now with lightsabers. This makes me wonder how many other tie-in films they have planned... and if there's any hope one will focus on Boba Fett! How do you feel about the film franchise expanding and do you think Snyder's a good option?

Source: Vulture

***UPDATE***

According to Snyder's spokesperson, the director is not working on any of the new Star Wars projects.   Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter  , his rep denies the report and says Snyder is currently occupied with Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia.

Snyder isn't the first person I would've picked to do a Star Wars movie. Then again, especially if it's not a numbered Episode, part of what made me excited about Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm was someone doing something new with it. Either way, I'm keeping my expectations in check and waiting to see actual footage of this or any other new Star Wars project before getting properly excited.

I don't mind EU films that use tie in methods to tell a story. Snyder is an excellent film maker and as long as the script is strong then they should go with it. I am only worried about the new trilogy and how that will work out.

Hell ya, the first signs that they will probably be doing multiple movies per year at some point. I think its a great idea to have movies other than the main trilogy with different styles and concepts, not every Star Wars movie has to tie directly into each other because its a huge galaxy with unlimited stories to tell.

This should be awesome, provided it doesn't nullify any canon of course.

The fight scenes may be cool, but I'm worried about the story. For me, the story is one of the most important things to Star Wars. Basing it on the Seven Samurai sounds awesome, though. Much potential that could go either well or poorly.

Ok... I've been trying to check my enthusiasm for new Star Wars projects, because.. I feel like I'll only be hurt again.. but... I dunno, a Jedi story inspired by Seven Samurai could be pretty awesome, and is also not completely an in appropriate for us to see what new Film Makers can do with the series. Especially considering the influence that another Kurosawa movie, The HIdden Fortress, had on the original Star Wars.

Also it's a good way to have a 'Star Wars Story' that is a little gritter and resonates with it's older audience that grew up with it better.

This sounds great. Despite a couple of marginal misses by Snyder ( I STILL like his "misses" ) he's def apt at bringing the action and FX to the forefront. Sounds promising, can't wait to see what will happen with the Star Wars franchise!

Zack Snyder is a great director for this type of movie. He loves to make a big special effects world. I think this is a great choice

As long as he returns to direct the Man of Steel sequels after this Star Wars spin-off then I'm fine with the news.

It should work as long as Snyder ....

  1. doesn't have anything to do with the plot or the script
  2. doesn't put in a random, out of place scene that really should belong in a porn
  3. doesn't overuse those slow motion sequences in action scenes
  4. has someone else already lay out every single scene for him and how it should already look like.

Other than that, Snyder is a good director & yay, more Star Wars!

As long as this doesn't affect Snyder's availability for Man of Steel, I'm perfectly fine with this. Snyder's epic special effects on Star Wars along with a Seven Samurai theme should make for an interesting Star Wars film.

It sounds like a great concept but I fear for the expanded universe material, I like it far to much to see it thrown away for the sake of a movie, especially if it is not a numbered episode.

I do like Snyder though, he has some great movies.

I'm curious, set how far after ROTJ? Cause, Luke was the only Jedi straight after ROTJ, iirc, so must be some time before he starts gathering and training a decent amount of competent Jedi!

This sounded awesome sure it would be style over substance but you can't deny it would be cool to see what he would do with a light saber battle. Heck even a short film of the subject would be sweet.

Yeah how far after ROTJ is a great question considering destroying the 2nd death star was only the start of the end of the empire,s fall. How dose seven samurai fit in here.

Well I guess now that it shows he's not part of it, I suppose we don't have to give up our hopes yet. Let him just focus on the 300 sequel and Man of Steel and let someone else worry about this new trilogy, even if the whole Seven Samurai thing makes me cautious for some reason.

Seven Samurai was an epic film. If he were to just add lightsabers and aliens (without messing with the plot). Then we would have a good film.

@Miss_Garrick: There are a lot of good actor these days, such as Tom Cruise and Christian Bale. They are crazy method actor (Tom Cruse got a job at the post office in order to play a role of a hitman by blending in and he managed to do it, Christian Bale for his role in the Machinist, then bulking up for Batman). The only problem is that Mifune is such a unique, so it's very difficult for me to ascertain someone similar to him. Though ironically a young Harrison Ford is kind of similar, in the gruff and humorous way.
