Zack Snyder Is Directing Superman

Looks like perhaps this movie will be able to fly.

This just in. A director for the new Superman movie has been found. Deadline has just announced that Zack Snyder has been chosen.

No Caption Provided

Snyder, director of 300, Watchmen and Legends of the Guardians, gets comic books and comic book movies. Will having him as a director make the movie more successful than Superman Returns? While that movie wasn't horrible, it had some elements that were just off.

What are your thoughts on this? Is this super news?

UPDATE

No Caption Provided
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the villain for the movie will be none other than General Zod. There's mention of the movie having a "connection to Richard Donner's 'Superman' films. It should be interesting to see how that would play out and what, if any, connection this would be to the "disappointment" of Superman Returns

What do you think about Zod being the villain (once again)? How will this movie be connected to the Donner films? Will Superman be asked to kneel before him once again?

I'm bummed by the Zod announcement too.  Not only does that demand comparison with Superman 2 which would have been otherwise unnecessary... but the scope of what we get to see is once again limited to a Kryptonian type threat: a Kryptonian rock, Kryptonian criminals, synthetic Kryptonite clone, a clone from Kryptonian hair, a Kryptonian terraforming crystal's EMP, and a Kryptonian rock... again.

There's an expression: "Styles make fights."

Given that we've seen the Kryptonian v. Kryptonian thing a number of times, why not try to broaden the scope of Superman's combat challenges?

1) A battle against a large mecha-suit from LexCorp painted olive drab with plum highlights is both true to the comics and animated series... but also gives Superman something Hulking to fight.  2) When the criminal pilot, Corben an ex-Captain in the American military stages an elaborate escape (filled with practical special effects and traditional action sequences like chase, gunfire, explosions) he manages to evade Superman but is mortally wounded in the process requiring the aid of his sponsor.  3) Luthor, of course, is behind it all and turns Corben into Metallo and has his own stripped down and more agile, less militarized power-suit.  Superman has to beat Metallo (which gives us the "versus Kryptonite" beat without the whole film being about it) with his wits and determination rather than raw power and when he wins, he completely tears Lex, the Man, from his suit of Iron, quickly and powerfully.  4) Metallo's not quite dead however, his technopathic essence transcending his corporeal form and becoming an elemental live wire, living lightning, or God of Thunder, which Superman ultimately defeats.

You get styles, you get homages, you get merchandising, you get to see how the franchise can give you more than just Kryptonians rolling around with each other in the air, and you up the scifi ante so that Superman is giving you something unique to comic book films and opens up the storytelling potential in the sequel.  A big part of the "magic" of modern Superman is the science fiction aspect which the animated series captured so perfectly.  If the only "magic" of Superman is Superman himself and Kryptonian elements then your storytelling potential is uncomfortably narrow.

NO MORE ZOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People need to be exposed to more of Superman's lesser known villains. All the supes villains an average non comic reader can think of is Lex Luthor and General Zod. THAT'S IT!!!!! There should be little if any connection to Donner's Superman, demonstrated by the Superman Returns film. The film should be:

  • Set in a time period where Clark has already become Superman and is well known to the populace
  • Should have little if any connection to Donner's Superman
  • Lex Luthor should be in his Lexcorp role and be closer to the current comic version so he can organise villains from the backstage
  • There should be guys in mech suits and have advanced weaponry. Possibly Intergang could fill this role?
  • The villain should be one of these 4 in order to provide Superman with a big climatic fight: Metallo, Bizarro, Brainiac or Darkseid
  • Lois should not be married or have any super kids. Instead she should be still interested in Superman and oblivious to Clark although it would be interesting to see the marraige relationship on the big screen
  • There should be little time spent on Krypton if any at all. If Brainiac is involved then time for the film can be spent on Krypton to provide Brainiac's backstory

God, words cannot describe how disappointed I am. Fans don't want a rehash of a previous film they want a new story, a new villain. Why all recent Superman films have been trying to follow Donner's Superman films I have no idea. This just makes me ... MAD!!!!!!!!! (Turns green with anger)

It always amuses me to see people who were perfectly happy reading Watchmen complain about the presence of a naked Dr. Manhattan in the movie. Think of the uproar if they decided to ignore that aspect of the character in the movie. Yes, there's full frontal male nudity, but that's because it's in the comic!
The movie is the most faithful to the source material of any comic book movie that's ever been made (with the possible exception of Sin City). If there is a flaw in the movie, it's because it was already there before the movie was made. Zack Snyder didn't ruin Watchmen. He brought it to life in a way that no other director would have been able to.

I hope this movie turns out good, they should use the smallville cast, since they made that so expansive. I hope this turns out better than watchmen, while as simular to the book as it was, it just didn't feel the same as reading it. But if they use the smallville cast, he's got my vote.

This is interesting news. I though they were aiming for a complete re-boot of the franchise, but it actually sounds like this movie will be even closer to the Christopher Reeve films than "Superman Returns."  The way Nolan spoke about it, I envisioned a Golden Age-esque Superman movie, with a more grounded feel, like the original background of the character (in the 30's).

The powers that be at Warner Brothers must be too afraid to deviate from the vision of the original films, since they nailed it so well (particularly Donner's).

We'll have to wait and see. They should entertain the idea of another villain though. You'll never beat Terrance Stamp-unless he's coming back to play Zod?

Why???  LET THEM GO PEOPLE!  For crying out loud, why can't we have a reboot?  Is this some kind of Chris Reeve love or something?  Yeah, he was a great Superman.  But he's dead now and it's time to move on.

Didn't Warner Bros. learn anything from Christopher Nolan?  How would Batman Begins have gone if he felt it necessary to connect it to 1989's Batman?

There's a completely different portrayal Between Manhattan in the comic and in the movie. Manhattan in the comics is dawn with unusually small genitalia, reminiscent of Ancient Greek statues, thus not drawing any attention to them. It manages to have nudity without any sexual connotations. In the movie, on the other hand, Manhattan is equipped with what the director himself refers to as a bell clapper. It's a small detail, but has a completely different effect.

I dont know, I think that Zod might be a good villain for the reboot. I mean, Nolan is attached to it and he did a great job of bringing the Joker back to the Batman film mythology...

I am down with seeeing what Zack Snyder can do.  I am not thrilled about Zod being the villain though.  I mean, Zod is cool, I like him, but I was kind of hoping DC would dig deeper into Supes Villain base for a character.  I think Darkseid would be an amazing character to see on the big screen.

@AtPhantom:
I always just saw it as the difference between comics and live action... you can draw it in a way that doesn't "call attention to it". But to put that on screen would just look silly (no offense to any of the small-penised out there. lol).
Either way... you don't catch the women complaining about the Silk Spectre's breasts being exposed in a scene. I think a lot of the complaints are more a case of sexual insecurity in some of the men out there... "gut-wrenching violence is fine, but don't make us look at a penis!"

@AxlReznor: I'm guessing it's because Spectre's boobs are only exposed for a brief amount of time, which is acceptable by now, but Manhattan... isn't. But I don't really have a problem with either one (especially Spectre's boobs. :P) and I'm not complaining about anything. I was just pointing out that there is a difference between the comic and movie. I suppose it's true that you couldn't translate it to the screen the way they did it in the comic, but they could have at least tried. They didn't. They made it like that on purpose.

We're told by knowledgeable insiders the reason Warner Bros. picked Snyder for Man of Steel is that the script by David Goyer was rushed, is still a bit of a mess, and that Warner Bros. needs someone who won't spend months or even years trying to get it just right (i.e. Aronofsky), because time is the one thing they don't have: The studio must have a new Superman movie in production by 2011 or they'll be subject to potential lawsuits by the heirs of the superhero's creators.

We're told that Snyder was not really Warner's first choice to direct Superman, but that a director needed to be hired imminently. Privately, even Snyder has confided to agency sources that the current Superman script needs work, but clearly Warner Bros. believes he can get it done faster than Aronofsky.

Zack Snyder is sort of a slowmo junkie~
Seriously, while rewatching Watchmen, he uses extreme slowmo a bit more than people drew muscles and awful feet on 90s comic covers :P

You know if WB plays the cards right they could still have it in production by 2011 by push it back because the movie not ready.   I mean can't they just claim reshoots to get more time?
Either way I think he's a good choice and has a good vision of comic book movies. Even though I though Watchmen was pretty boring it did follow the source material with just about every frame.
But I admit I would rather see a new enemy than Zod or Luthor. Those two are the most overused villians for a Superman movie.  Why not bring in Brainiac, Darkseid, Bizarro, etc. I mean Supes has a pretty good rogues gallery to choose from when it comes to villians and while Luthor and Zod are the easiest to look at why not step outside of that and really give them a Supes movie that really displays his powers. I think one of the best parts of Superman Returns is when he flew through the city stopping random incidents until he got to the Daily Planet globe falling.  To me that showed off his powers greatly.

I wouldn't mind seeing Zod and Lex, I'm sure Snyder will do  a great job! Watchmen and 300 rocked!

Superman with even more effort and care will be far better I bet plus Nolan is producing, this has epic win written all over it!

I just hope they choose Welling as from every article I read it's between Jon Hamm and Tom Welling has a lot of support especially....

As a matter of perspective, at this same point in the time table for The Dark Knight, the rumored title was "Batman: Enter The Joker" and several news sites were reporting Robin Williams as all but a lock on the Joker's role.

@Atphantom you'd be surprised how much support Welling has especially now that he's finally going to don the suit at the end of Smallville...I'd say the timing couldn't be better...and I'm tired of the "no name tactics" it worked for Reeve, had an ok responce for Routh but you can't say Tom isn't deserving of it at this point.... and Routh is officially out according to tons of articles about this so who else really? Keanu Reeves? Please...Tom Cruise? Fail...Johnny Depp...nooooooooo, if they don't use Tom here they better use him for the future JL movies especially since they've had the JL and JSA in Smallville already...

Personally Hamm looks far too old for Supes anyway, Welling has the perfect physique, age and brings his own cool style of Clark Kent and Superman.

@MKF30:  He's got support among fans.. Not producers. Despite everything, he still doesn't look like a Superman. He'd look ridiculous in the costume. So no, I'd say he isn't deserving of it.

Tom had no support from Singer(considering how Returns came out overall I'd say his views are taken with a grain of salt at this point) but til Snyder, Nolan confirm they have "no interest in Welling" I'm not buying into that.... how do you know how he'd look? lol we haven't even seen him in a costume yet so that's just your opinion. Brandon looked FAR too thin and not built enough for Superman, Welling even most superman fans agree has a better, bigger physique and is deserving of the role...

What's been more successful, Smallville or Returns? Exactly....

Like I said in my previous post, who else is there? Nobody at this point...the no name tactic is a fail at this point, it worked for Christopher Reeves yes but not so much with Brandon and he tried impersonating Reeves FAR too much....

Tom at least has his own take on Clark/Supes which is the way it should be. You have to do what the fans want and majority of late especially want Welling or at least a huge handful of Superman fans....

@MKF30: You're not buying into what the producer said? Okay, I can't help you with that. All I can say is, if there was even a rumor of Welling being considered, don't you think someone would have reported it in this site by now?
Welling has worn the costume off stage. He looked ridiculous in it. No matter what, he still looks like he's in highschool. That's fine for playing a struggling young Clark. It's not fine for playing Superman.

What's been more successful, Smallville or Returns? Exactly....

What had a more original story, characters, and was not a rip off of a decades old film? Yeah, exactly. Moreover, why does it matter anyway?

There's always nobody left... Until they find somebody. How is a no name tactic a failure if it didn't work out in just one film, the entire point of which was to impersonate Reeve's version? Welling's own take on Clark/Supes is going to do him absolutely no good since this is not the same Supes. He's gonna have to start from scratch, just like everyone else. Which wouldn't work out. He's had his go. Now let someone else try it.

I said I'm not believing what "people" say but once Snyder or Nolan confirm themselves that they have absolutely 0% interest in Welling, then I'll buy it...that's all.

And I never said Tom was definite, I said I hope they consider him.

Uhh, Smallville then easily...why? Super baby? Fail...Superman getting his ass kicked by a bunch of thugs? Fail(yes I know about green K but we've seen superman fight thru worse..thanks) Superman randomly flying off earth for 5 years for no reason(other then horrible plot) when everyone knows Krypton has been long gone for how long now?Fail... Superman stalking Lois Lane all of a sudden and her forgetting about him? Fail....I can go on....

Hell at least Smallville tried putting in various characters in DCU crucial to Supermans life at various points in his jouney where as the movies keep using the same villians over and over and over....

I can go on...Smallville is just an interpretation but overall accurate with how Clark/Superman grew up..which was in Smallville...may not be perfect but even people not a fan of the show have to give props when due, 10 years kinds of vouches for that....and the idea was fresh instead of just "Superman in Metropolis" wow, been there, done that...

Of course it's the same Superman, it's just not the same era...btw I have to disagree with that theory because look at Kevin Conroy...most fans WANT him to voice Batman in every animated film, show or video game....yet, he's played "alternate Batmans" from BB to the animated original movies....to alternate batmans in the JL series so your point? I'm sure Welling can play "Snyders/Nolan's Superman" he is an actor afterall...it's kind of is his job. So he starts from scratch with the role, like I said the fans want him to be Superman in some kind of movie so it really should happen....I don't care whether it's this reboot, all star superman movie or a JL movie...Welling has to be in a Superman movie at some point....that's all I'm saying. Even C. Reeve even said "Welling is a great Superman and the next" coming from the legendary Superman actor I think that's saying something...

With that being said, I can agree to disagree with you on the Superman actor gig...I'll still gladly take Welling's Superman and Clark over Brandon's which tried to emulate Reeve's Superman far too much...

@MKF30:
Arguing that Welling has to be in a Superman movie is as valid as saying that Dean Cain has to be in one.

Using Smallville as a reference for Superman fandom misses the mark as well.  For every Smallville fan, there's a Superman fan who hates the show.  Personally, I wanted to like it, but it got too boring too quickly.  From what I hear now, he's still doing the, "what should I do?" crap.  I even saw a pic showing Supergirl has made it into the show, but he's yet to put on the suit himself?  So... does that mean Superman, the flagship hero in the DCU, has been relegated to being a copycat of his copycat?  What will people say when he's revealed to the public in that universe?  Most likely, "Why's this guy dressing like Supergirl?"
