X-Men: First Class Character Profile: Angel Salvadore

Will Angel end up on the side of good or evil?

Do you know who Angel Salvadore is? If you don't read X-Men, especially Grant Morrison's run, then you're probably in the dark. Angel first appeared in New X-Men #118 and she was created by Grant Morrison and Ethan Van Sciver.

I think it's safe to say, based on the trailers, that the film version of the Angel is going to be a bit different than the comic book version. But who is Angel and how could she play a role in this film, based on the photos we've seen so far?

== TEASER ==
I just lost my appetite... forever.

Angel Salvadore, in the comics books, is a bit gross but has a lot of sassyness, and she doesn't seem too much like the sexy movie version we've seen numerous times in trailers or photos floating around the web. First off, she can spit acid. Her saliva is acidic, like a fly. She can also fly and has wings...like a fly.

She spent her days, during Morrison's New X-Men run, shacking up with fellow X-Men Beak, and the two love birds (get it? Beak's a bird looking dude) had a whole bunch of weird looking half-Beak/half-Angel kids. Multiple children, just like a fly. All of the children aged rapidly though, and it's assumed they all have shortened life spans as well.

Angel was de-powered during M-Day, and spent her time running around under the name Tempest and a member of the New Warriors. She had super-powered gauntlets on that let her generate cold, heat, and wind. To be honest, this is where the character became infinity uninteresting.

Obviously, this won't be the Angel we will see on the big screen, but I'm pretty sure we will get aspects of this character. However, story-wise, it seems like there's a lot going on with this character.

We've seen the shot on the left a million times at this point, and at one point, we've all mentioned that it's insanely creepy. Professor X and Magneto watch Angel undress. However, on the right, there's a new photo floating around the web. It's Sebastian Shaw and Angel toasting each other. What could this mean? Well, one of two things: Either Angel starts out as a member of the X-Men and ends up switching over to the Hellfire Club because they're just so darn classy, or Angel becomes a spy for the X-Men and infiltrates the Hellfire Club. The first scenario is much more plausible. It could also go vice versa.

We don't know much other than this, since Angel really hasn't appeared too much in the trailers or in other photos as much as some of he other characters.

The character of Angel Salvadore is played by Zoë Kravitz and she is the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet. While she doesn't look anything like the character from the books, it doesn't really matter since this movie continuity really has nothing to do with the comic anyway. Do you guys think Zoe is right for the part? What do you think about Angel in this film and what role will she play?

I think Zoe is perfect. She's definitely the best looking girl in the whole movie (:
and I'm glad they're using a less well known character. The effects of the wings look incredible.
I would've loved Zoe to have been Storm .. or another more main character. But i'm happy (:

P.S.   She's a stripper in the movie, thats why Professor X and Magneto are watching her undress. (:  and she does have her acid spit.

Not the best choice in my opinion, probably the worst i think for this movie.

@Cherry Bomb: We've discussed that scene. It's still creepy, two dudes sitting back watching her like that.

@G-Man:  Haha (: true! guess that's what it was like in the good old 60's  XD

Seems like she spits fire instead of acid ...

I think it made sense how she becomes affiliated with Shaw, especially given her defection in Morrison's Planet X. She does spit acid in the film, however it's has explosive tendencies oddly, she was a welcome addition and seemed to fit into the mythos of the movie well IMO.

Love her presentation on the film... just right.

Not very cool character profile.

Fire breath? That's a first.

Yep yep, I think she is great for this role!

If she was taller she'd be my favorite to play Stormy!

As a whole, I am just really not looking forward to this movie at all. Unfortunately for me I am a stickler for source material and while I can suspend this tendency for Iron Man or Thor, X-Men movies after the X2 have been really getting to me. That and I was also very unhappy when a First Class tv spot claimed that Vaughn is doing for X-Men what Nolan did for Batman.

While I like the casting, I'm not a big fan of the character...Angel was one of the many reasons that I stopped reading X-Men during Morrison's run...That said, I'm curious to see how she is handled in this movie...

Posted by MysterioMaximus

She's drop dead gorgeous. Wow! I'm not familiar with the character in the comics, but from what I see I'm interested. I think she looks awesome in the trailers.

@Cherry Bomb: Nahh it is acid, just looks a bit like fire, the movie shows a scene where she spits it at a statue and it starts to corode, like acid
@jcbart: feel exactly the same
@G-Man: It's not as creepy as it looks in the film, she doesn't actually get undressed, but she does start off as a stripper lol
Posted by SC
@Baddamdog:  Just 'cause she dances go-go Don't make her a ho no no.

More seriously though, I sorta buy that angle, given she is probably poor in the movie, sort of down on her luck, Mags and Xavier are probably their to help her? Sorta reminds me of Xavier and Emma Frost in Deadly Genesis. I hope Angel and Emma have some nice scenes in the movie!!

U know what I think... I think she starts out as a member of the Hellfire Club as a dancer or show girl or something until Magneto and Prof X show up... she's tasked to entertain them and they convince her to go with them!! This is just my theory given the photos!!
Posted by Baddamdog
@SC: haha! what a tune!
@papad1992: I could confirm or deny your theories but I wouldn't want to spoil...

Hi !

I've seen the movie this morning (I live in France). No spoilers, but this version of Angela Salvadore is not very interesting. Like many other characters, alas.
She spits, by the way. Not acid, but she spits.

Hihane washte.

She seems more awesome than the comic version.

im excited for her role in the movie, just based of the images alone, she seems like the seductress with her own secret agenda. go salvadore!

I guess fire was a lot less creepier than acid. Plus it probably doesn't make you want to throw up.

I always found Angel in the comics annoying plus when she and Beak got involved and had the half insect/half bird children I was actually glad when Beak left them to be in the Exiles. I like Morrison but Angel was a character I didn't care for. Yet, I am very interested in the movie's interpretation.

@SC: No way! Storm is a dark skinned beauty, although Zoe is a lovely lass, she just doesn't strike me as a powerful force of nature either.
Posted by SC
@Thunderscream:  I'd def take Zoe over Halle, and Halle fits your description too really lol in that sense, so I would still be okay with ZK. Oh, truth be told, for Storm, I'd go unknown if I was actually in the power to cast.

Can we please not talk about the Exiles during the Chris Claremont era? It was the worst thing to ever happen to comic books.

Halle Berry wasn't exactly a dark-skinned beauty in the X-Men movies, she has the same skin tone as Zoe

@SC: oh, i agree, halle wasn't right either. when word of the first film started circulating, i was hoping for angela basset....alas i think her window to play a young storm has passed. an unknown would definitely be the way to go now.

I like Angel so I cant wait to finally see the movie tommorrow.

What do I think?  Well...I do want to see this movie...but I'm not psyched about this character...No Scott Summers or Jean Grey..but we do have this Angel Salvadore character...come on people..there's a reason she is rarely if ever even in the X-Men comics...(not a good character)..but that's just my opinion..maybe the movie will make her into a better character?  Still...would MUCH rather they stick to the comics..but hey..c'est la vie!

im seeing this movie on saturday and cant wait
i think its cool that angels in it cus i loved morrisons new xmen
never actually got grossed out by angels powers i always thought they were kinda cool
and im liking zoe kravitz as angel with the tatto wings
Edited by GREGalicious

I actually think Zoe does look like ANGEL. She just looks like the HOUSE OF M supermodel version of the character.
Since she lost her powers, she's toned up a bit (w/ the NEW WARRIORS) and i think she's quite beautiful in the mainstream version.
She was probably supposed to be pretty anyway but all of Morrison's art made the characters look so UGLY to me.

Zoe Kravitz..... Born from greatness.

Wow, she is hot.

Never cared about her comic counterpart, just another throwaway character from Morrison's run.  But I like the fact that Zoe's playing her. I'm always down to look at her doing anything. Hopefully I can find a high quality copy of this flick so I can watch this epic fail from the comfort of my own home.

A Perfect Angel.

Firstly I'm excited for both Zoe Kratiz to be in the First Class film and I'm more than thrilled that Angel Salvadore is being played by her and being portrayed in the film. And people say that she doesn't seem like Angel in the comics but I for one can see that she is. Both Angel are deep and insecure at the core about their (her) mutation and both seem grow extremely passionate with pride for mutants after sometime around them even though she still dislike her physical one. And from what I've seen from the previews she still has her sassy personality and the defensive nature from her past.

But anyways I think Angel does look like she should look taking from the fact that she is possibly Afro-Latino (last name Salvadore) so Zoe is perfect though Rihanna/Arlenis Sosa Pena/Emanula du Paula/Zoe Saldana or someone with darker skin could have been a little better but I don't think that anyone could bring the emotional deepness that I think Zoe will bring Angel. And if the make an older version of her I think Rosario Dawson would fit playing Angel perfectly.  Plus since this is a alternative world like GREGalicious said I think that their taking from the eXiles version of her a more sexier Angel.  Also I love that they through in the Emma/Angel combo as in the comic Emma was a core factor in Angel growing more when Emma took her under her diamond studded cloak and as Mat said. (Ps. SPOLIER - I think Angel will leave the X-men as if one looks when Angel makes her speech Shaw is standing next to her.)

And Angel status a stripper isn't right. As Angel in the movie is described to be a Go-Go dancer. And I think that when she shows her mutation to Charles and Erik that it's just one of those moments where to have to expose yourself to others to show them who you true are. So again it shows the audience another side of a character that they make not have seen in the comics or just a side to a character that they may not be acquainted with.

Lastly, I love that they keep Angel's power set the way they are in the

X-Men: First Class Concept Art for Angel Salvadore
X-Men: First Class Concept Art for Angel Salvadore
comics but changed them also. I understand that they changed them because having Ange's fly wings out all the time would be a high level of money for their SFX budget and making them tattoo's was even cooler (though that doesn't take away from the natural hatred Angel had for her wings in the being). But I would have loved if the winged tattoo's where more down her body with ridges as if the wings where just layered closing towards her body. Like in there Marvel.Com picture's above. I also love the fact that they still give her her acidic spit and the vibrations from her wings.

But anyways all and all I can't wait to see Angel Salvadore/Zoe Kravtiz in X-men: First Class.

@Cherry Bomb:  It's acid. I think the previews were just fast as Zoe herself has said that Angel has acidic powers. But when I first show it I thought it was fire and that maybe they where going to go with a new codename for her like Dragonfly or something. Lol. But just think that maybe the changed the appearance of it when making it all acidic-like and all slobbing down her face.
@daken_2513: I feel the same way.
@G-Man: I don't think we've fully seen the scene as when Angel flies upward her shirt is on. So maybe she just unties the back.
@CaptainGenisVell: I don't think that they just happened on to the bar. I think it's more Magneto and Professor X found her through Cerebro and went there to recruit her.

   one: bad profile, all together
two: halle berry is darker than zoe, if you cant see that your in denial
three: zoe is too light to be storm
