X-Force Isn't Finished With Apocalypse Yet

Why are they taking a trip to the Age of Apocalypse?

It looks like the members of Uncanny X-Force have been shaken to their core after completing their first mission. Many are questioning their role and the moral implications in the killing of a child who was to grow up into one of their greatest villains, Apocalypse. So what does a team of some of the most badass mutants in the world do when the going gets tough? ROAD TRIP!

With this being pushed as The Year of the X-Men, Uncanny X-Force looks to be really thrown into the limelight, as they will be sent on a mission that will take them to Earth- 295. That’s right, X-Force may be done with their universe’s Apocalypse, but they may be seeing him, or at least some of his cronies, a little sooner than they thought in the Age of Apocalypse universe. But just why is X-Force leaving Earth-616? I doubt this is some kind of therapy session to validate the killing (for now) of their universe’s Apocalypse so they can get their heads back in the game.
 == TEASER ==
For those of you who need a quick history lesson, back in 1995 Marvel introduced us to an alternate universe where Charles Xavier’s illegitimate son Legion traveled back in time to kill Magneto, which he thought would allow his dad’s dream of human/mutant equality come to light. Instead, he accidentally kills his dad and creates a branching universe where Magneto, in honor of his good friend, takes up his creed and becomes the fighting de facto leader of mutantkind. Seeing all this take place, Apocalypse, who doesn’t attack for another 10 years in the 616, feels that this is the perfect time to strike and basically conquers North America and lays waste to much of the rest of the world.

In Age of Apocalypse, we saw some radically different takes on classic X-Men characters. Some heroes were villains, like Dark Beast who found his way to the 616 and continues to haunt this universe’s X-Men. Some villains were heroes, like Sabretooth who was a member of the Age of Apocalypse’s X-Men. And some characters were just turned on their heads and we saw mirror images of them, like Nightcrawler who is much more violent and prone to offense than his 616 version and also hates churches, which is in direct contrast to the 616’s Nightcrawler who was very religious.

The first major milestone of this event is that even though mutants from Age of Apocalypse have traveled to the 616 (again, see Dark Beast), this marks the first time that mutants from the 616 will be heading to the Age of Apocalypse. This continues to beg the question though: why? Something to take note of is that in this teaser image, we see Archangel is not present.
"Archangel is not there for a reason, and it's a reason you don't expect,” said X-Force writer Rick Remender at the press conference Marvel had to talk about the future of the X-Men family of books. An obvious answer would be that the rest of X-Force fears Archangel not being able to handle possibly seeing Apocalypse again, in any iteration, or he himself fears it and doesn’t want to put any further strain on his special relationship with Psylocke. But if it’s something we don’t expect and since X-Force are the ones  doing the time hopping, maybe they’re searching for something, or someone? Maybe to get some answers from some folks more accustomed to dealing with Apocalypse on a daily basis to get some help for their psychologically troubled metal winged friend?

Aside from this little rift in the team lineup, there will be two things that draw a lot of people’s attention from this arc. The first will be how this affects the current members of X-Force who are actually going and mutantkind possibly as a whole. We know nothing phases Fantomex and that he will do whatever necessary to get the job done, which if anything, makes him a character to keep an even closer eye on to see if his cool exterior finally cracks. But the characters we know that should have a reaction is the remainder of the team and it should be interesting to see how it plays out.

Earth-295 Age of Apocalypse
How will Wolverine react to seeing these different versions of Jean Grey, the love he could never obtain, Nightcrawler, one of his best friends, and be forced to maybe work alongside his greatest nemesis, Sabretooth, again (AoA Sabretooth is officially missing after his work with the Exiles, but this could bring him back)?

How will Psylocke react to possibly seeing herself? Although not part of the original Age of Apocalypse, she made her presence felt in the 2005 limited series and we learned she was similar to her 616 counterpart, but more ninja-like. I sense an awesome catfight waiting to happen there.

And finally, how will Deadpool react to his AoA counterpart, Dead Man Wade, a special assassin for Apocalypse in the AoA, actually being killed by AoA Nightcrawler? If the other characters meet their counterparts, it would be out of Deadpool’s character to not openly make a fuss in finding out what happened to his other self. Of course, seeing Deadpool as the most shaken of the group after killing the child Apocalypse and the revelation that he never cashed any of Archangel’s checks could be the base to start seeing a bit more mature Deadpool and a little less of the joking maniac we have become accustomed to so we may not see this touched upon as deeply as we would like.

Earth-295 AoA/Dark Beast
The other big aspect is that Remender also talked about naturally expanding the X- Force roster and about Dark Beast being a major character again in this arc. Could he be the catalyst that propels our heroes to Earth-295? Could Dark Beast be the reason why Archangel is not present with the rest of X-Force or that the team will land in the AoA universe 10 years after the events of the 2005 limited series? Dark Beast could also be a perfect fit for the darker, seedier missions that X-Force usually has to take on so could he actually find himself as a new member of the team?

There are also a lot of characters that weren’t even mentioned. What characters from the AoA would you like to see be prominently featured in the new AoA arc and maybe even possibly join the X-Force roster? Comment below and weigh in on all these questions and let us know what you think! We’ll start to get our answers to what is shaping up to be a huge shake-up with Uncanny X-Force #11 in June.

Just let Apocolypse go.....let him rest in peace.

Think Wolverine might take advantage of the fact that Jean of this reality is totally into him?

I'm not sure how I feel about this just yet...

Uncanny X-Force is one of the greatest X-men books on the market, so I have every bit of confidence in Rick Remender and he'll definitely bring in an awesome story.

Not only is Rick Remender writing characters in ways that actually make us care for them no matter how overused they are in today's market (Deadpool and Wolverine being prime examples), but he is also writing stories that continue to drag us in more and more. I don't think a single person saw the ending to the Apocalypse arc coming and I think it's only to be like that for the current Deathlok arc as well.

Uncanny X-Force is THEE book to buy, if you're not reading it....then you are missing out BIG TIME!!

NIGHTCRAWLER

Eh... I think dwelling on all things Apocalypse will rob issue 4's climax of its power

I want to get this story arc so bad, has it already started?  It looks really fun.  Do I need to get older issues to understand it?

Posted by TheCrowbar

Honestly I think it'll go like this:

Angel loses his mental fight against Archangel.

Archangel meets Dark Beast and jumps dimensions.

Archangel serves  Apocalypse there.

AoA X-men try to kill Archangel, 616 X-Force are trying to prevent it. Hence the title of the preview.

We could always use more Dark Beast.

I got back into comics with the AoA storyline.  I'd probably get back in it again with this one.

I would like to see them bring one or more characters back with them to the main universe to join their team. I know it wont happen but i would be interested in seeing the X-Force become their own version of the (and seperate from) X-Men. It would basically be taking the place of the Brotherhood and when i think of it that way i wouldnt want to have happen because i like the fact that for the most part, all mutants have joined together.

If so, AoA Nightcrawler would be my pick.

I'd like to know how Sabretooth isn't with the Exiles anymore

Apocalypse is still dead in the AoA

of all the people I would like to see would be the crew of the New X-Men. Anole, Elixer, Pixie, Surge all of them. Seeing some of the them in Age of X has been Meh, I would prefer to see that major changes to them.

Also would love to see AOA Abyss- I don't remember if he died or not.

  1. I think this is kind of a great idea. I'd enjoy seein' how Wolverine reacts to seein' both Nightcrawler and Jean Grey. But, I'm more interested in seein' AoA Nightcrawler join the X-Force. Why? Because it'll add a little more depth to things I believe. Havin' a darker version of Nightcrawler around would be awesome yet it'd cause some animousity amongst the team.

  2. First with Logan, seein' as how he was best friends with 616 Kurt and havin a more brutal Kurt around would give him a love/hate relationship with the guy (Lovin' the fact he kills while hatin' the fact he isn't like the Kurt he grew to love). Second with Deadpool, whom AoA Nightcrawler would end up arguing with and bring up the fact he killed Dead Man Wade possibly sayin', "I killed one once, I'll do it again." or something.

Overall, I like the idea of it. The team would be searching for a way to cure Warren (possibly),  but also how to deal with Apocalypse should he ever return (which is highly possible).

Thats a sex-changed wolverine. JK. I think that's their version of x-23, but i don't know why she has 3 claws..

she's Wolverine and Mariko's daughter and was born with 3 claws and then had them covered in adamantium by Magneto

why does this book dominate everything? so good. all the time.

I know! This is the best Archangel I've seen in a long time, I'm on the edge of just asking that the writer of X-Force take over Marvel.

I don't know why they're goin' and hate interdimensial stories but I'll forgive that if they bring Nightcrawler home with them :P

love this x-force team and AoA was one of my favorite storylines . can't wait !

Agreed.   He hasn't had any character development in ages.

Sigh, I thought maybe I'd wait out for the next arc and jump back into this title...but fuck this, this title seems doomed to perpetually suck and be over hyped. I'm against this arc more or less for the same reason I'm against Age of X, despite some new spin it's more or less picking age of Apocalypses bones for story scraps (though in Mike Carey's defense he knows how to work his carrion). Remender has no skill at writing Apocalypse (or a logical arc for that matter). And his characterization of Warren was so off base that I refuse to acknowledge his X-Force as existing in cannon.

616 Psylocke and 295 Sabretooth are or at least were friends in the New Exiles

@danhimself:  Ahhh thanks I was wondering if it was a female draken lol

The whole pace of this title has been wrong from the start.

I'm done with X-Force.  This is my final issue.  I won't miss it.
Posted by rufug

WTH with all the X-Force haters. Remender is doing a fantastic job doing some great characterization and killer plotlines for the arcs. Shut up and read "The Apocalypse Solution" again, you might understand by the second reading that this a true flagship Marvel gem.

Posted by The Impersonator

Hmmm. Here are the possible reasons of why the X-Force are traveling to Earth-295:

1. Dark Beast has been working with the AOA version of Apocalypse to enter Earth-616.

2. Apocalypse's AOA version has found a way to enter Earth-616 by himself since he  has advanced technology. Once the Dark Beast tells the X-Force what happened, they travel to Earth-295 with the aid of Dark Beast to stop Apocalypse before he conquers Earth-616.

Posted by VanTesla

Why do they have to spew more 616 in 295... I wish they kept 295 self contained after and let it end so it can be remembered as a great series... Why can't they end stuff and have some dam consistency! If Marvel actually wanted to sell they should keep writers on a book and not juggle them and make things a bloody mess all the time... Just feel like ranting a bit.

@Redalert_27:
Word!, "The Omen" (that little bastard WAS NOT En Sabah Nur!!!), as the first mission was terrible. So many more immediate targets to handle that would've provided excellent action and moral debate. And continuing the one huge mistake of Kyle/Yost's run on the title, which sets back basically the sum total of Warren's character development was an indescribably idiotic move.

Yes, because undoing a decade plus of excellent character development is always the way to go about crafting "great characterization"! And ignoring gaping plot holes, logical lapses, and prior continuity are the foundations of excellent storytelling...

Remender's X-Force is a really hot chick with nothing of value to say, and the more she speaks the more you want to rip her vocal cords out.

And the word "hater" is so heavily abused to the point that it's as played out as Deadpool/Wolverine appearances. It's called an opinion, folk.  And one backed up with valid, rational reasoning is not hate. What it is is a personal appraisal of a work of art. I have a right to voice my displeasure with this title just as you do to praise and recommend it. However it's rather puerile to resort to using pejoratives like "hater" to attempt to brush aside another's point of view. It's no better than me writing you off  and dismissing you by calling you a fan boy.

I read this entire arc and didn't like it. I've read it multiple times just to ensure I wasn't being reactionary and the more I read it the more I noticed it's flaws and disliked it. Nothing aside from the appealed to me. A title like this isn't worth my $4 a month especially not when there's so many more cheaper, superior titles on the market. If this is what Marvel considers a flagship quality title, then they're in much greater trouble than I ever could've imagined.

@JonesDeini: First of all: Relax. I really like this book and I just want to get folks into it by blindly rejecting anyone who doesn't like it. Why? Because I'm not being really serious about it, just wanted to generate some chatter. Yes I did use the word hater but don't go all "Literate Kanye" on me because of that. I did NOT call YOU a "hater", I was just posting up some fast-internet-forum-like comment to get some people on board with a book not only sales but critique have called "excellent". Call me a fanboy and keep showing off your "big words" dude. It's the internet, deal with it.
Posted by doordoor123

This book is awesome. I love how Deadpool is written. I feel like he hasnt been written this well in probably 10 years.

Posted by JonesDeini
@rufug:
Literate Kanye? Heh, amusing.

And no hard hard feelings on my end, folk. At the end of the day it's the internet, man. Nobody wins an argument here so I have no interest in entering into one. I am however, all for discussion/spirited debate. For the record never called you a fan boy, was posting a hypothetical. At the end of the day, to each his own. Everybody's boat's blown by a different wind.

@JonesDeini: I was kinda douchy I'm sorry about my last response didn't mean to be aggressive :S I'm also up for debate and that was kinda the purpose of my first comment. You should give Remender a chance though xD JK.

Hey, bro. We'ere comic fans, comes with the turf lol. And I actually like Remender, just not his take on X-Force (well aside from Fantomex, whom he nails on all conceivable levels). I'm waiting for his Punisher run to return as a full ongoing. Will definitely be checking for that. I hear good things about "In The Blood" so I might go ahead and dive into to that to hold me over.

Leave the AOA alone, marvel tried going back to it a couple of years ago and made a mess of it. I doubt this will be any different.
