X-Force #20 Reviewed, Is This The End Of X-23?

G-Man reviews the latest issue featuring lots of violence.

Here we have what could be the end of X-23.  In case you haven't been keeping up, X-23 has been taken by the Facility and had her arm cut off by Kimura.  Things aren't looking too good (unless you're talking about the art and colors, then things look amazing).

I love when Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost, Mike Choi and Sonia Oback are all working on the book.  With Kyle and Yost writing, you know the book is in safe hands.  The art team of Choi and Oback just knocks me off my feet.

Things aren't looking too good for X-23 and now Wolverine is starting to feel the urge to be a father figure.  What makes that interesting is this book is supposed to allow Logan to just go all out and let his savage nature out on the missions.  But with X-23 in danger, he's feeling responsible for her.  Will we see more of Logan struggling to be a better 'dad'?  If so, what about Daken?  And who knows if he has any other kids running around.

There is also a little bit of closure with Wolfsbane.  She's been away from the team for some time.  Knowing how Yost and Kyle like to make things tough on the characters, we can assume her homecoming might not be the most joyous one.

To me, X-Force is just a fun book.  They're not tied to the moral obligations that the other X-teams are.  They don't have to put on a public face.  They do what is necessary to get the job done.  Kyle and Yost manage to come up with these dire situations month after month.  And I simply can't go on enough about the art here.  While the issue may not have been earth-shattering, I just really enjoyed reading it.

makes no difference to me, I didn't even know she existed until I came to the Vine.

X-23 was probably one of the main reasons that I've become such a marvel fanatic (that and deadpool), so I hope they keep her around for a while longer.

you keep saying dack-in isn't pronounced dake-in.  it's spelled like taken and taken isn't pronounced tack-in.  either way  both version are kind of a stupid name

Definitely one of if not my favorite Marvel title. If I had to pick one X-Force, Agents of Atlas, Invincible Iron Man, Dark Avengers or Nova I'm not sure which would be my fav.

@goldenkey: Since it's my website, I say the names the way I want to.  ;)  I actually flip between dack-in and dock-in.

Not a fan of X-23 or what they did with Archangel, but I agree with this review one hundred percent. Loved the Necrosha one-shot even more.

I wonder if this was the issue that Sonia Oback had to go back & edit instead of going to San Diego, because their new editor said there was too much blood :p

Great stuff, and Kimura's promise at the end was interesting...

Laura gives new meaning to the term "kill you with one hand tied behind my back."

I totally agree. X-Force is one of my favorite titles now. I really like what they're doing with Angel's character. I think Warpath is becoming one of my favorite characters and I think X-23 is awesome. Can't wait for next month!

Deffentaly one of my favourite titles too. I never really like mike choi's art before, but now hes grown on me. Also, starting to like x-23 abit more with the help of this issue and the last 2 or 3 have been educational for me to the character. I might grab her solo comic that choi, chris yost and craig kyle did.

I do love chris yost and craig kyle's writing. even if most of the time there are so many different sub comics going on all the time. It's clear that they work really well together and i hope they continue with x-force for a long time.

X-Force is totally the best X-Men series. It's interesting and looks beautiful. And I really like Domino and X-23 and Selene... oh and Wolfsbane.

Edited by Dr. Detfink

I'm guessing X-23 will regrow a whole new arm and then the blades will be reattached. EAt your heart out Daken.

I liked this issue the first time when it was called Uncanny X-men #131: Wolverine lashes out. That is, Wolverine said fuck this and unleashes the animal within wiping out the Hellfire guards. The difference is, John Byrne was handcuffed by the comics code, while X-force is virtually a MAX series. I have a 6 year old little girl and I don't even want her looking at this when she's 13. Um, can you say V-i-o-l-e-n-t?

That said, X-force has a mission statement that we've waited for a loooong time in X-men comics. After so many times of the X-men getting blindsided by Magneto, Sinister, Sentinals, etc you'd think the X-men would take the fight to their enemies? Again, credit the use of Cyclops as a leader who doesn't go the Xavier route "turn the other cheek." No, Scott's way is, "Let's not wait for our enemies to wipe us out." The art has improved tremendously over the time.

As for X-23, she's going to be the Cassandra Cain of the Marvel U. She'll get her own ongoing series again. It's just a matter of time.

@goldenkey: your right about the name it is like taken  , but i love the character so much , that i like the name !!!

This was a great issue IMO.

Over all i think this arc was a tad rushed, but it was still pretty good. Now im interested to see what happens to Laura's loved ones now that like Norman Osbourne she's got her own list

X-23 had her arm reattached they already showed it in Necrosha

Kyle & Yost
Choi & Oback
X-Force is my favorite book right now because of this creative team.
I hope this team stays on X-Force after Necrosha or hopefully during the upcoming story-arc.
i think it sets-up future stories that could be fun to read.
5 out of 5 for me.
Good review, G-Man.

@Namor1987: Ah, thanks for the info. That just depresses me cause there was no point of napalming her arm in this particular issue.

There was because napalm is highly flammable & fire usually burns all DNA & leaves it unrecognizable or hard to trace so that would be one way of her prevernting the Facility from tracing her

Actually,  SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content.

This issue doesn't resemble Uncanny #131.  Wolverine has unleashed his bezerker rage against a room full of hired goons on various occasions.  Laura doesn't go into bezerker rages unless she's chemically induced into it with the trigger scent.  Also, X23 has never had her own on-going series.  She's featured in 2 mini series.  Those were written by Kyle & Yost, who have publically stated that they don't have many X23 stories left to tell.  And an X23 story without K&Y writing it isn't worth the paper it was printed on.

And please refrain from swearing.  This is a family site, so at the very least censor your own swearing.

Did X-23 had only her claws coated with adamantium, or entire skeleton?

Okay, maybe I should clear things up.  I believe people already let it out that she survives.  That was just my hook or tease to make sure you read the issue and/or check out my video.

Just her claws.  The facility removed them, coasted them and then surgically reattached.  Pretty horrible... but that's why she held on to them, because she knows that they can be re-attached.

There are too many lame Wolverine knock offs.  First they took away some of what made Logan special with that awful maudlin origin story.  Now they're going for more sad money grabs with X-23, Dorken, and a bunch of other losers with claws coming out of their ass.  I wish they would strip all that excess baggage out of 616.

No, X-23 is not his child. Only Daken is.

To be fair, although she is a clone she's still so different, much younger and he treats her in an almost parental way that it is fair to think of her as a daughter... or sorts.

He would technically be her adopted father or her surrogate father

He hasn't adopted her, and he isn't a surrogate.  I was just saying that I can see why people would think of him as a father figure.  Technically he's closer to being a twin than a father.

Geese I said technically & Ik that plus TECHNICALLY he isnt a twin theyre no where near the same age plus he's adopted on the father role just not legally plus he contributed to her creation even though not willingly or to his knowledge so he could also qualify  as a pseudo-surrogate father

She is her clone.... O.o
How lame is that ehh? if they where goin to make a female wolverine wanabe at least they should had pulled something plausible. Not the classic and simply crappy clone thing.

I would had made her the result of wolverine + silverfox = x-23. if you know what I mean ;)
But made artifically tought.
Posted by xerox_kitty

@Suigetsu: There's a lot of stories in comics that sound lame when you try to explain them, but when you read them they're actually very well done.  The two X-23 mini series are perfect examples of that.  They really are a good read, and make Laura a likeable character.  I'd really recommend them!

No! She can't die! She hasn't been in enough issues yet! And not to mention, she's totally badass!
