World's Finest #1 Reviewed, Will The New Formula Work?

G-Man checks out the first issue of the four issue mini-series.

"World's Finest" is an idea that DC started way back in 1941.  It typically involved a team-up between Superman and Batman.  As you know, Superman is off planet on New Krypton and Batman...well we know that Bruce is lost somewhere in time and Dick Grayson is filling in for him.  The question may be, how can DC put out a new World's Finest mini-series when the key characters are not available to appear.

In order to keep this comic relevant, DC has gone in the direction of teaming up a member of the Bat-family along with someone from the Superman-family.  It's a great idea.  We already have Superman/Batman still going on.  We have the potential here to see team-ups between characters that may not have worked together before.

Sterling Gates does a good job of setting this team-up.  The tricky part would be to pair up Tim Drake and Chris Kent without making it feel forced, just for the sake of this issue.  We know Tim is off running around the world in search of Bruce.  It makes sense that a Kryptonian would be able to find him.  It also makes sense that Chris would seek Tim out to help him in his time of need.  With Superman off planet and Batman...elsewhere, there really isn't anyone else Chris could turn to.  Despite liking this idea, the story felt like it left me wanting a little more.  The story is nicely wrapped up here and it just felt like the 'battle' happened too fast.  Also while I'm intrigued with Tim's new journey and Chris' continued development, the two together simply doesn't get me super-excited.  It's an interesting pairing but not one that I would be running around telling everyone about.

Julian Lopez's art is good here.  Tim is looking more and more like Bruce in the Batman cowl (minus the pointy ears).  Nightwing looks cool in his suit and Penguin looks spooky.  I also liked the cover by Phil Noto.  It's almost a simple design but having Red Robin centered among a green background with Kryptonite Man at the bottom made the book stand out on the shelf to me at the comic store.

My rating may not have been super-high but it's still a good book.  I think there is potential in this mini-series.  There's also the fact that DC (and Marvel) put out a bunch of books this week. Perhaps if it had been released the previous week, I might've gotten more into it?  If you're a fan of Tim Drake/Red Robin, you'll want to pick this up to see him in action.  Will he be able to take on the Kryptonite Man?

I was really glad that I decided to pick this book up...I didn't think that it was going to be any good but I was really surprised at just how good it was...I would have definitely given it a higher score then that

Nice review but it should have been Red Robin aka Tim Drake\Wayne & Superboy aka Conner Kent and the next issue should be Robin aka Damian Wayne & Nightwing Chris Kent. They should also keep teaming-up other super-families like these.

Unless you've been keeping up with the back story of these two characters, you're completely lost as to what's going on. I would not recommend this title if they hadn't been keeping up with what's going on with Superman and Batman. However, I think that's a nifty play on World's Finest.

FYI: With Connor back, I am putting money that Chris dies at the end of this impending Krypton/Earth war. Don't see both Connor and Chris running around.

Chris Kent and Red Robin vs. Kryptonite Man and The Penguin? Wow, they really pulled out their big guns for this issue.
Although, once again, G-Man doing the voices in the review really sold me.

    I'm a fan of Red Robin, but I Ithinks its funny that Tim keeps getting interupted in his mission to find Bruce by everybody for his help, Conner, Chris and Dick. Red Robin's time continuity is all over the place and how does fit to Blackest Night? The whole Chris Kent/ Flamebird sounds weird too. So is she down with hooking up a kid in a  accelerately aged body?

@RoninKane:
Blackest Night takes place at the end of the DC "year" James Robinson or Geoff Johns said so at a con.

it was good. side note: there where two covers, the other being Nightwing in Red Robin's place, and Penguin in Kryptonite Man's.

@G-Man: Lord, i hate your Tim Drake voice! keep in mind hes like 20, built like an Olympic caliber athlete, and 'mimicking the grizzled Batman voice. Chris is the one whos like 17. I understand if you only have a couple of voices in your vocal range, but please pick a better one for Tim next time.

@Grim: That's always been Tim's voice for me.  He's just been...whiney lately.

@blade hunter: It does seem that since BFTC, Tim suddenly matured very quickly.  When he was Robin, he didn't seem to have that physical appearance.

@NightFang: I guess they're trying to do "different" team-ups.  Also, Tim and Conner just teamed up in Adventure Comics.

I find it funny that the original idea of Kal-El being the last Kryptonian is soooooooooo lost now!

it could be something to do with the suit or the artist's have forgotten he's just a teenager.

@G-Man: hes gone through just a tad more than Batman now, loss wise, and he still doesn't really whine. people tell him to calm down or cheer up, and he does the same thing Batman did: he tells them why he cant calm down or cheer up. He's the closest out of all the Bat family to Batman personality and skill wise, he's just not the best fighter. maybe this is just a biased opinion, but id like to think it isnt.

@sora_thekey:
yeah, up until New Krypton, he was still the youngest born kryptonian. I guess he's still the youngest born ON krypton, but the whole Last Son title kinda looses its value when your on a planet with like a million others just like you.

Are they going to have Dick Grayson and Supes team up? cause I'd like to see them work together with Dick behind the Cowl, would be pretty interesting i think.

After this issue I started to really like Nightwing and Flamebird. I really enjoyed this issue I have about 250 issues of the original World's Finest series and thought I would try this out.
