WonderCon 2012: Confirmed - Ms. Marvel to Become Captain Marvel

There's been speculation and now it's been officially confirmed.

On Monday, Marvel released a teaser for the return of Captain Marvel. The big question was, who would Captain Marvel actually be? Would Mar-Vell be returning from the dead? We made the argument that Captain Marvel should be Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel because she was worthy and deserved her own series. It turns out, that is who Captain Marvel will be.

Yesterday at WonderCon in Anaheim, Marvel confirmed that Carol Danvers would become Captain Marvel in a new ongoing series written by Kelly Sue DeConnick with art by Dexter Soy.

Kelly Sue DeConnick said the following:

My pitch was called ‘Pilot’ and the take can pretty much be summed up with ‘Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager. Carol's the virtual definition of a Type A personality. She's a competitor and a control freak. At the start of our series, we see Carol pre-Captain Marvel, pre-NASA even, back when she was a fiercely competitive pilot. We'll see her meeting one of her aviation heroes and we'll see her youthful bravado, her swagger. Then over the course of the first arc we're going to watch her find her way back to that hungry place. She'll have to figure out how to be both Captain Marvel and Chuck Yeager—to marry the responsibility of that legacy with the sheer joy being nearly invulnerable and flying really [expletive] fast.

“My playlist for this series is heavy on AC/DC, Heart and Pat Benatar.

We'll have to wait until July to see how Carol handles taking on the mantle of Captain Marvel and what new dangers she will face in her new role.

eh.

I'm happy with this but I still wan to know who the Captain Marvel is on the Secret Avengers cover

Posted by PrinceIMC

I don't get it. Why after all this time would she become Captain Marvel? It's the whole Warbird fiasco all over again. Plus the look, it would look better on Power Girl, not on Carol Danvers.

Interesting concept. Ms. Marvel's a strong enough character for her own series. Her last one didn't do too bad.

are you serious

Sounds cool.

I think I like the costume a lot more without the goofy helmet mask thing, but it looks good so far.

Costume looks GOD-Awful

Posted by Jolt92

That's cool, I'll check it out!

Would rather have a pure Ms.Marvel series though.

Hmm cool. Maybe marvel aren't as anti-women as everything thinks..... Although why can't she be a kickass strong driven woman, and have a long hair?

Posted by Namor1987

She looks very butch with her haircut like that. Her other costume was more feminine. But she looks cool with the mask.

Good for Carol but not liking the Johnny Knoxville haircut. Overall look is great though.

So looking forward to this (my favourite female in the Marvel U)! Must admit, at first I wasn't sure what to think about her new look, but the more I look at these pictures the more I like it! Though, after looking at comments on another site, approving of this Carol seems to be a minority.

The militaryish uniform suits her damn well. She still comes off as a kick ass, strong and sexy female character. The new haircut also falls into the soldier category, which I don't have anything against (the short hair that is). And she still is rocking the sash!

People seems to want her back in her current outfit and that would be the only way to have it. While I don't mind the current costume I don't understand the complaints about this one (nor the complaints of her using the Captain Marvel title). I mean, Carol has already gone through several (now iconic outfits) as well as names. To me, Carol will always be the best of the best!

So is this set in the past or present?

I like the description Kelly Sue DeConnick gave. I like the tone of this already, really making her more kick ass which she needs to be. A strong powerful female character.

I like the costume about 75%. The fact it integrates a bit of the original design with a modern appeal is what I was hoping to see. Not too keen on the mask.

Could be the right direction for Carol Danvers.

She looks absolutely amazing - I am super excited about this opportunity for a fantastic character. Loving the new look, great to see this strong, confident woman heading her own series again.

Thanks Marvel, I am in.

That costume is brilliant. The shorter hair makes sense.

I think its she is being given the spotlight again because her series in its last run was pretty good until it was intergrated into the Dark Avengers story line and it never recovered from that. The costume could use some work butso far it looks good.

I am excited to see Ms. Marvel have her own series again.

great costume and an another ongoing serie: great

This is great news...but I smell early cancellation.

At first I didn't really like the look of the costume but through the day it's grown on me a little. The interior art is nice and I love the reference to Chuck Yeager. Ms. Marvel is a character deserving of her own series so hopefully this one has The Right Stuff.

Not liking the whole costume really and the mask seems pointless, the interior art does look good though.

You know...I love the concept. I think she deserves the title of Captain Marvel. I love the costume for the most part. You wanna know the only thing I hate about this is? The hair. Why the hair? I have nothing against her having the short hair...just why THAT hair cut? I mean...good god. I love the costume design. They make nods to both Captain Mar-Vell's suit and Ms. Marvel's. I even like how they made it look like a military uniform. But I just can't get past the hair. I mean...I'm hoping that there's a ponytail back there and we just can't see it, because otherwise it looks like she's rocking a mullet. I also realize she's a bit of a feminist, and I'm hoping to god that the designer didn't take a stereotype and designed her around that bit....god the more I look at it I think of a butch female super saiyan.

Deservedly so, but I'll miss her current costume. I seriously don't like the artwork for the first two images, but the second two however, they look amazing. However I think the costume would only work with the mask (as shown in the final image). And what's with the story? Sounds very prequel to me. We shall have to see.

LOOOOVE Dexter Soy. It's like Sana Takeda without all of the erotic undertones.

I'm not sure about Carol with Short Hair

Posted by Miss_Garrick

I like the costume, but I'm bummed that it's not going to be Monica Rambeau. She was Captain Marvel to me and I could never stand Carol.

Posted by redhood21

not liking the costume much. its captain not cavalryman marvel.

Posted by Alpha

Cool, but not really feeling the custom. Hoping they would just place her in Mar Vell's old uniform

Posted by Aiden Cross

I hate short hair on women..

Posted by Imagine_Man15

I actually love the costume. I'm not all that familiar with Carol Danvers, but I am definitely excited for this.

Posted by Ganthetsward20

Not in love with her short hair, but I will be reading this. The art looks amazing too!

Posted by notoriousbcb

Too cool. This is a great development for her character.

Idig the short hair... but I kinda got a soft spot for women with short hair....

Posted by Nuec_Sol

Looks awsome. I am for sure checking it out in this summer.

She looks....kinda marvellous. =P

Posted by Outside_85

Can only complain over the haircut and costume (Carol's old one was much better) but I guess it comes with the name.

Ok for the love of God please do not cut her hair that short. That is ugly as hell, and so is that stupid mask. The costume I can kind of understand because she is taking on a new mantle, but that outfit is still nothing near as good as her previous outfit. This won't last long at all, and I really hope it doesn't. I'm a huge Ms. Marvel fan, she is my favorite superhero of all time, but this just seems stupid. They could have just changed her name and altered the colors in her outfit a little, but instead they want to try and do what DC ended up doing with a majority of their characters.

Edited by ARMIV2

Nice! Costume looks excellent (the mask is alright, but she looks better without it) and I'm digging the short hair.

Also, epic playlist.

Posted by TDK_1997

I don't want her to be the Captain Marvel.

Posted by WildStyle

Can't wait.

Posted by DarkerPhoenix

i'm happy for carol! its awesome that she's taking over a guy's former moniker. i was shocked reading so many comments that she couldn't be a "captain" on the other forum, it read very sexist. i think she's earned it. hopefully the book is good, i'll give it a try.

i like carol with shorter hair, she feels more military take-charge again. i like the outfit without the mask and without the sash....

Posted by RavenT2

She will make an awesome Captain Marvel.

Posted by maxicere

Looks like a lesbian hero. I don't like this shortcut. The art don't look well

Edited by hectorsquall

I'm glad that she has her own book again but...

Click on the video below to see my reaction when I saw that AWFUL new look:

Making the call right now, the only reason their bringing back the Captain Marvel name is because of the SHAZAM! renaming/reintroduction to the DCU. Like transparently so. That said, the book looks like it could be quite good
