Wonder Woman To Get CW Television Series

The Amazonian warrior could get another chance at her very own television show, but will you want to watch it?

Remember when the folks at the CW premiered the first episode of ARROW to audiences at Comic-Con, and it was a success? Those who saw it had promising things to say about the upcoming new series revolving around DC comics' "Emerald Archer." And although the television series has not yet made its way to the small screen (the show premiere's October 10th) it looks as though it may have opened the door for the CW to explore other DC comics properties to bring them to the small screen. Namely, Wonder Woman. Yes, you read that right! The CW may very well be looking to bring Wonder Woman to the small screen.

Last year we saw a Wonder Woman pilot developed by David E. Kelly that was just a little too over the top for audiences. The NBC developed television show was shut down before most of us even had the chance to see the pilot, but what was wrong with it? Was it Kelly's vision for the character -- that mix of crime-fighting with a dash of corporate head honcho -- or was it Wonder Woman's character herself? Can she be adapted to the small screen, or is the concept of an Amazonian warrior who is likely as strong as the Man of Steel, unrelatable and too unbelievable for audiences to grasp? The CW doesn't seem to think so and neither does Warner Brothers. According to the latest report from VULTURE, Wonder Woman may very well be on her way to the small screen with a little help from Allan Heinberg, who has scripted Grey's Anatomy and The O.C. as well as YOUNG AVENGERS for Marvel comics.

== TEASER ==

According to the source, Warner and the CW firmly have faith in Diana's origin story. They believe that a focus on the young Amazon warrior before the days when she met and fell in love with Steve Trevor or joined the Justice League, might make an interesting television show. The big difference here is that the CW wants to keep the bracelets, crown and Princess stuff out of the story. Question is, could this actually work? This is the part where we look to Smallville. The successful CW series that lasted a whopping ten seasons on the network is a great example of the CW taking a super powered character and grounding him, telling the story of Superman before he actually became Superman. We have a feeling that Warner and the CW might take the same recipe that worked for Superman and apply it to Wonder Woman. We like to think it can work, and having a guy like Allan Heinberg scripting (someone familiar with comics and comic characters) might not be a bad idea.

What do you think of all this? Do you think a show centered around the days before Wonder Woman became Wonder Woman could work? Is it something you can see yourself watching?

I'd like to see her get her own live action movie. She's a very high profile character and, if done well, the movie could be a blockbuster.

It can go with Clark at office with his co-workers.Lois Lane plays a youtube video and we see a video clip of Wonder Woman for 20 seconds. Lois says."Nobody knows who she is...it looks like she can Superman a run for his money."

Thank you!!

If your not going to do an animated series...then do a developing story on the Character before the whole Wonder Woman idea.

Adventures on the island...hell yeah. That means more Greek Mythology to dig into the character, other characters, creatures, etc.

Hell with it being ther WB Smallville setup...I'm sure they are going to mix all the new Origin stuff with old if it makes it pass a certain number of seasons.

Other Wonder Woman origin mixes I'm sure I'll see...new 52 (some how) and Wonder Woman online anime style...yeah she rides a winged horse!

SOOO lets start guessing...who's the actress going to be? and Diana's Mother IS Equally if not MORE important a figure in this new idea.

1) Diana's Amazon Princess heritage is a huge part of her character. If you remove it or other similarly critical elements of it; she's not Wonder Woman anymore. She may as well just be another character if the only thing the same is the name.

Furthermore, from a literal perspective, the bracelets are Iconic. If you literally remove the bracelets it's like removing Batman's cowl or Superman's S.

2) It doesn't matter how many issues Hippolyta appeared in as Wonder Woman. The point is that the character was retconned a years ago making Hippolyta THE Golden Age Wonder Woman. In other words; every issue was her as Wonder Woman when she wore a dress -- or close to that.

1. Yeah, so what she loses the bracelets and the crown. It doesn't mean she loses everything. Smallville ran for 10 seasons. If they followed a similar formula, but go straight to the point like how they're doing with arrow, this could easily last 5 season. It doesn't mean they're removing everything from the equation.

2. She only briefly assumed the role as wonder woman in a few issues. She was never Wonder Woman. Thats like making Azaral, Batman before Bruce Wayne was Batman. Diana is the first person who took up the role of Wonder Woman and should always stay that way

Lynda Carter(70's WW) and Phil Jimenez say about this news.

“I am delighted to hear this news," Carter told The Huffington Post when asked about the new CW project. "Wonder Woman is a fantastic, inspirational character who should be introduced to a new generation. I wish them great luck and look forward to seeing it on air."

---

"For a variety of reasons but many, I'd argue, that are rooted in deep-seated notions held about gender and sex, Wonder Woman can be a very difficult character to make commercially potent in comic books," Jimenez said in an email statement. "Wonder Woman is, after all, a woman with a capital 'W' -- always a trick with fanboys (and some fangirls, too), because of her mission statement, point-of-view and hyper-feminist origins, especially the one creator William Moulton Marston ascribed the original incarnation of the character years ago."

Jimenez said he hopes a TV show can explore Wonder Woman's history in a compelling manner while sticking to the elements that make the character iconic and "not just some proto-Xena." After writing the character for three years, Jimenez said he has some interesting insights about the character and her story, should DC or Heinberg want a little help.

"I particularly hope to see some sort of exploration of the long-standing relationship between the precocious Diana and her mother, the over-protective Queen Hippolyta; how a child raised in a mythological paradise becomes interested in anything but; and how Wonder Woman's near utopian upbringing affects her POV and what she brings to humanity as opposed to say, Batman's dark, dystopian one," he said. "And if anyone can manage the commercial needs of television as well as the tonal essentials of joy, hope, and empowerment-thu-action that make Wonder Woman 'Wonder Woman,' it's Heinberg."

I think these small series should be about the less relevant heroes of the DC. I mean Batman- Superman and Wonder Woman kinda belongs to the big screen. While the less exposed characters should have the spotlight with the TV series.

Personally, I don't think a ''humanized'' Wonder Woman won't work as good as Smallville series since Clark actually raised as a human while Diana was always an Amazon Princess.

Although , as said if it was an all-amazon cast, I would watch 1....or 5 episodes :D

OORRR, near the end Superman could unknowingly fly past Paradise island where Wonder Woman is bada$$ fighting(training) and she looks up as he flies past she turns around. Giving her a reason to come to Man's world with her curiosity.

^Got that from a comment section

It actually seems their gonna give her a cameo anyway so I'm happy.

According to our source part of WB’s plan is to use ‘Man Of Steel’ and drop hints that Superman is in a shared universe with his DC counterparts. The hints will be very subtle such as character mentions. The one character that DC is really wanting to reference is Wonder Woman. The source was unclear on if this would be to set up a solo movie for the Amazon Princess or to the Justice League, but with the info that was just posted it seems more likely to be the JLA.

I recently purchased the first volume of Amalgam comics (TPB, DC side), and would rather see Amazon (Storm/Wonder Woman). That said, I think they should do a series that starts with her when she first arrives to Man's World, maybe narrated by Hippolyta or something. Show Diana adjusting to a new country and modern technology and such. Also, Nerf her. Make her more like the movie versions of the X-Men, rather than the planet-tosser she is in the comics (<100 tons). Superman and Wonder Woman are too similar in powers/pacifism/message to the world to simply do another Smallville-style series (though I do wish they'd go back to their original intent and do Bruce Wayne, detailing his training). Maybe even set the series during Amazons Attack, minus the other heroes, and have her trying to act as mediator, or figure out who prompted it. Idk, but there are better ways to handle this.

1. Smallville did that and it went for ten seasons. It introduced Superman to a whole new generation of viewers and made people fall in love with Clark Kent all over again. also the most iconic part about Superman was his 'S'. He went like 7 seasons without the 'S'

2. The character was only retconned a few years ago as the golden age wonder woman. but that really did not have much of an impact, even though its cannon, almost no one viewed hippolyta as Wonder Woman. Furthermore, its retconned out that there is no Wonder Woman in the golden age anymore.

I'll watch it if Cory is the one singing the intro song.

They need to do the movie and cast Angie Harmon for it.

if they are going to a "smallville" with diana it will fail what need to do is the opposite and make to where she is first starting out as wonder woman and adjust to mans world w/ steve

Not sure. I don't really care for a show if it revolved around the Amazons and their exploits.

Posted by wallywest55

That would be super lame if they made a show about her b4 she became wonder woman. Honestly what they need to do is go ahead and hire me to assist them in making anything DC related. Bc they r messing up big time. Arrow is looking really bad but we shall see when the pilot comes out. I hope its not bad. And they need to just stop trying to make wonder woman work as a tv series. She is a big name and needs a movie. A tv series about WW sounds dumb and i bet they would try and make it similar to smallville which also wasnt a good show lol.

They need at least five years so we can forget the horrible Wonder Woman pilot.

The real problem with the pilot and any future adaptation is that WW is a silly and outdated concept that needed to be put away permanently years ago. Enough with the misguided advocacy for this character and let's move on to something worth producing.Anything but WW.

Thats like saying Superman is a silly and outdated concept.

Wonder Woman is DC's biggest female icon and 3rd most iconic character. Iconic means they can stand the test of time.

What an ignorant statement.

This character is not Iconic and has only seen a brief resurgence as a result of the unfortunate Trinity storyline a few years ago.The general public looks at this and laughs. DC keeps it because they don't have enough viable female characters around that generate strong fan interest let alone crossover interest. The time for DC to dump this character is now and develop a wider female character base that deserve being spunoff and aren't second fiddle to Batman,Superman,GL etc.The only thing ignorant here is calling WW iconic.

I think the Buffy/Xena era of female super powered females is over with. Also, I have to agree that while WW is the #3 character, most see her as still on the same level as GL, Flash, or Aquaman. However, just as far below Batman & Superman as those others are. The fact she is female is what makes her stand out, but she is not part of a Trinity of Equality. Batman & Superman are the top of DC. Then WW.

Now, I thought it was because of Steve that she left the island? & if they are not going to have the royalty, then are they going to have her rouges based in mythology? Or make them that, gag, realistic BS that Smallville thought was so good.

Cant they make Xena, but just more realistic?

You are speaking absolute nonsense. Just randomly search the net on most iconic superheroes

http://media.gunaxin.com/the-12-most-iconic-comic-book-heroes/36336

http://comicbooks.about.com/od/characters/tp/topsuperhero.htm

http://my.spill.com/profiles/blogs/top-20-greatest-comic-book

In addition to that. Wonder Woman has been a solid seller. She is the female character that has the most number of ongoing.

Also, who says DC doesn't have enough Viable female characters?

Supergirl
Batgirl and Supergirl
Batwoman #1
Catwoman
Batgirl

33. Wonder Woman

36. Batgirl

45. Batwoman

58. Catwoman

66. Supergirl

All of which sold more than FF and all of which except for Supergirl sold more than FF which had a movie.

The fact that Wonder Woman sold more than Wolverine, Fantastic Four, Captain America, X-men and Thor says alot about her.

If you really think Wonder Woman is not iconic, you have got to be seriously Naive.

Edited by Ferdi47

I would wait to know who they would cast as Wonder Woman Diana before comitting myself to the show. Because Adrianne Palicki wasn't really who I pictured for her. I was just wondering why everyone says Heinberg has touched the comic domain because he wrote the Young Avengers, when it would be much more obvious - not to mention reassuring to fans like myself - that he has already written Wonder Woman back in 2006, and thus, knows something about the character. (click on the thumb for proof)

@sethysquare :Again you read half my statement to attempt to prove a point.Any of the other characters you've just listed are all second fiddle characters to male counterparts. They exist in the same OCD universe hard core DC fans need to have the same story told over and over again. It's time to move on dude to something new,but any of the other characters you listed would be better than WW. Just because something may pull in bigger numbers doesn't make it any good and doesn't avoid being timeworn. For the Luva God WW is bad enough, but you put Supergirl at the top of your list??

Posted by gokuwarrior

@Alton: just because you consider WW a bad character doesn't make it true, she is the female that has sold more, and is the most recognized female in comics,so she is iconic, she is one of the few females that don't live in the shadow of a man, like all the females based on a male character.

wonder woman is her own character, her own origing, her own story,DC tried to give otther females the spotlight, but they didn't work as well as WW,if she is a good seller on her own,and is the most recognized female worldwide, that counts for something.

your argument is that she's bad, lame?,that's cheap, you say the same that anyone says about a character that doesn't like, superman and batman hasn't changed that much over the years, that doesn't make them timeworn,WW can be as good as any character if you have a good writter to make good stories, with that any character can shine and show its potential,WW is an interested character for a lot of people, that shows in her sales and popularity over any other female, and that's enough for DC to keep the character,if you aren't interested,i don't know why you are wasting your time in her forum.

Posted by PurpleCandy

As long as it stays true to her true origin. I'm pretty sure the General audience and people who only know WW's name/appearence don't even know where she's from, the General audience probably think she's kryptonian or is just magically strong, and I know CW might appeal to that (dumb) logic. True origin please

Posted by PurpleCandy

Oh yeah and how does Smallville tell you about Superman before he became Superman? Last time I checked Superman didn't fight the likes of Zod, Doomsday and Darkseid till his mid 30's.

Posted by Gsudorf

I just ope that CW stops turning DC comics into shows before they get to Flash which would be a CGI blur or Aquaman which would be Smallville but on a beach.
