WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN Creative Team Discuss Future Of The Book

The series' creative team discusses their plans for the future of the title.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN writer Jason Aaron and artist Nick Bradshaw were present at today's Marvel NOW! Liveblog. The pair geared up to discuss the future of WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN and explain why the heck Wolverine is kissing Storm on the latest teaser. The discussion took off without a hitch and writer Jason Aaron addressed the crazy ending of issue #18 off the bat. According to the writer, it was nice to see so many people get emotional about a moment in comics because it is indicative that people care. However, based on the preview pages to WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #19, below, it looks like we may be seeing more of a certain character after-all.

No Caption Provided
If anything we're trying to get back to where we were before all the AvX madness set in…A lot of the characters who pop up in the issue, I would love to have as part of the book," Aaron says, though the book already has a large cast. "Some you will see down the road…It's one of those proverbial great jumping-on points.

So, although issue #19 picks up right where #18 left off, it seems that it's still a great jumping on point for new readers because it is structured as this sort of "rebuilding" of the school. The issue will feature appearances form various characters -- many of whom we haven't seen -- in the upcoming series. According to Aaron, this next arc in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN will be a "callback to the Claremont/Byrne circus story," where Bradshaw will be drawing "a whole arc set in Frankenstein's Murder Circus." Finally, Aaron promises that no one gets shot in the head -- at least to for the next few issues.

However, it seems that Aaron isn't only taking cues from Byrne when it comes to this next story arc -- he also has big plans for Storm's character in the upcoming series, making her a part of the Jean Grey School. As for what other characters we can expect to see in the coming book, Aaron cites Cyclops in issue #21.

Besides all this, however, Aaron stresses that these characters are growing -- both the children at the school as well as the adults.

There's a lot of stuff to come with Idie and Quentin, not all romantic in nature. There's lots to come with Genesis, our Kid Apocalypse. Rick Remender have talked a lot about him. We've been shaping that story for a couple of years and have stuff planned as far as 2014. There will also be a surprising relationship with one of the kids…I know some of the hardcore X-Men fans want Kitty and Colossus, but to me, one of the big themes of Wolverine & The X-Men is change, these characters growing up. It's a book about family, about moving from childhood into adulthood, and Kitty and Iceman fit that perfectly to me. Once they were both the X-Men kids and now they're basically Professor X. They're bonding over that. They're not necessarily head over heels in love, but there's something there they want to explore…Even before Wolverine & The X-Men started, I had the feeling it would be something special. I want to stick around for a long time.

Writer Jason Aaron also clued fans into what they can expect in the coming books beyond issue #19. He cited, for example, the fact that issue #20 is "pretty much an Angel solo issue," which is something a lot of Angel fans have been wanting to see since the end of the Dark Angel Saga and Angel's return as a mind-wiped character.

Issue #20 is pretty much an Angel solo issue. We see him as the first graduate of the Jean Grey School looking for what he wants to do next. He needs to get an internship. He finds a new purpose in life. He'll be running up against Mystique and the new Silver Samurai. It plants the seeds for what's coming up with Angel and ties back to what Rick Remender did in the Dark Angel Saga…We've got big sprawling 'X-Men out in the world saving the day' adventures coming up in 2013. The seeds start to get planted starting this week with issue #19.

Clearly, Jason Aaron has a lot of plans for WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN! What do you think of the news so far? Are you looking forward to the upcoming issues? Let us know in the comments what you think of Aaron's plans for the series.

Looks like the school's getting some new students, although I'm betting that the dark-haired girl with the wings in the cover image is Mystique in disguise.

@Avenging-X-Bolt: Yeah, but she looks a bit blocky in the first panel. Although I do love the idea of her being a shapeshifter on a molecular level, like Apocalypse or Transonic.

I'm still waiting to see if the issue of Wolverine is addressed in WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN. Many of the staff of the Jean Grey School left Utopia because they didn't like Cyclop's mutant hit squad, but Wolverine is doing the same thing. Do they know about his X-Force team? I'm not sure any of the writers are thinking about that plot hole.

To me, Wolverine has become such a hypocrite.

this is the best X book on the shelves. Crazy, funny, weird, and Wolverine is an awsome school leader. I just love it. From what I gathered Evan isn't going to stay a bad guy. Kind of a had a feeling he wouldn't become Apocalypse. Genesis is a great idea for a character.

I'm not sure any of the writers are thinking about that plot hole.

To me, Wolverine has become such a hypocrite.

I both agree and disagree. I'll explain why it is I disagree;

Wolverine's main point with maintaining X-Force is he's doing it so no one else has to. So that the kids in particular never have to kill. He believes killing the shooter before he pulls the trigger is better than suffering hind sight bias. He always has and simply held back because folks like Prof. X and Scott kept him on a tight leash. He tried things their way. The sad thing is, in the stories as they've been written thus far, Wolverine's way has not proven to be a terrible theory.

When the shite hit the fan, he never hid the fact that X-Force was always just as much Logan's hit squad as it was Cyclops'. He hid from nothing and shouldered the blame every bit as much as Cyclops did (Storm in particular really had it out with him).

But when their gig was exposed, he gave Cyclops a way out. Logan just soldiered on, shouldering the entire burden (even financially when Warren succumbed) when it risked dragging Scott under the bus. Do you really think Scott didn't know what Logan was doing? He agreed to keep his hands clean on paper, to be kept in the dark, to reestablish his integrity as a leader while Logan forged on. Reread their exchange ... Scott knew. He ain't dumb and knows Logan fairly well.

Finally, Logan being part of X-Force coincides with his philosophy that kids should not be soldiers. To make the world a less dark place for the next generation ... for wrong or for right, he kills so they can grow up not having to be soldiers and becomes themselves killers.

@Super_SoldierXII: the whole reason behind scott's x force was to protect mutants as well.

& even though it coincides with logan's philosophy that kids shouldnt be warriors.. hes fooling himself mutant children are going to have to learn how to be solders, because of how hated they are... the last school ended cause people kept killing off the students... if you cuddle the kids & Force them to be children your only weakening them for the dark future that lye's ahead

Wolverine & Scott aren't so different but wolverine is morally worse. Wolverine kills ALL the time hes a flat out murderer hes no different from sabertooth or Dakken. he will kill at moments notice... the only difference is he has a soft side for kids & hes wolverine so no one accepts his faults. X force is a necessary evil in order to deal with specific & dire threats but if scott should be condemned for that so should logan

Wolverine's X-Men seems like one of those books that I want to read but don't know where to start, like X-Factor. It seems like a fun book where lots of random and fun stuff can happen. Blade applies for a job, to teach the students how to fight the undead. Deathlock is a teacher there. All that fun stuff.

Am I the only one who thinks the whole Kitty/Iceman thing is not only stupid, but completely boring and unoriginal? I wouldn't mind if it were a new thing, but it's already been done in the Ultimate universe and on Wolverine and the X-men, so... not really that original. I'm also a die hard Kitty/Colossus fan, so I may be biased, but I feel like they could have come up with a better romantic storyline for both of them

There was on X-Men Animated (1990 series) where Wolverine and Storm actually dated/kissed. Not sure if anyone remembers this but yeah, I remember seeing that on Netflix. It was about the future and Cable had to do something to save someone or something (can't recall what the story was about).

I don't think so. Otherwise, why would the staff be against Cyclops having a hit squad, but okay with Wolverine doing it? That would make them all hypocrites to use the very methods they denounced.

Storm girl what the hell are you doing! You can have any man in the Marvel Universe, and you're sucking face with the Danny Devito of the X-Men. I hope you make him shave his back. You went from the king of Wakanda, to a high school principal. That's like going from Jay-Z to Flavor-Flav!

How is he 'benefiting' from it? He's not benefiting at all ... he and his team go through hell doing what they do to prevent the very worst elements from mass murdering ever again and they gain nothing in so doing.

I'm sorry, but Sabretooth rapes, tortures and murders indiscriminately and without restraint. He has proven himself to be far beyond rehabilitation. He needs to be put down before he guts another innocent person (like the defenseless woman he disemboweled on a whim in a recent issue for instance). Who's going to take Creed out, local law enforcers? Shya right. I'm all for knowing there's a team out there putting rabid dogs like that in a six foot grave. The Skinless man is another perversion. Another serial killer who gets off on mutilation and murder ... The Shadow King rapes the minds and souls of his endless victims.

Yes X-Force, please, by all means, rid humanity of their disease I say.

We have to understand it's absolute blights on humanity that X-Force was devised to do away with. Apocalypse, the mutant who keeps being reborn to commit genocide (or at least attempt such) again, and again and again. Who kills people, men women and children, as though they were less than insects ... yes, please, by all means ... stop him by any means necessary X-Force! No?

Here's the kicker; why should he have do divulge everything he is doing to kids and comrades alike when he believes he's sacrificing for the greater good and in hiding from them the darker, sadder side of life like that, is protecting them from certain harsh realities they need not be a part of, realities he would keep them from, and save them from living as he had and has, by any means necessary? He believes the world needs people like him to prevent those he loves from having to become killers like him. He's not being a hypocrite, he's manning up.

X force is a necessary evil in order to deal with specific & dire threats but if scott should be condemned for that so should logan

I agree ... but there's a danger room in the freaken bathroom from crissakes. Safe to say Logan ain't the hand holding type. He takes them on field trips to intergalactic gambling dives. (One of their next field trips will be in the Savage Land). Wolverine is not coddling these kids. He's treating them like kids, letting them be kids, while not raising them to be weak, disillusioned brats who do not know how to handle themselves. They train hard in the intelligent use of their powers daily and learn how to defend themselves. This is still Wolverine we're talking about here.

When he took out Kid Gladiator with a pressure point, after the Strontian had taken out half the Avengers, he chided him whilst doing so that he shoulda stayed in school. There is indeed combat training to be had.

He simply thinks (and rightly so) the majority of their time should be in a school, not a battlefield and / or military training regimen for mutants. He feels Scott lost sight of that. And that just because they're different, and yes, that they may face imminent danger from those who fear them, they should not be robbed of their right to be kids. Prepared kids, but kids all the same.

Wolverine is extremely different from Sabretooth and Daken. See what I wrote above to delineate the differences for starters. The fact you say he isn't tells me you don't know the character at all. Wolverine will kill soldiers trying to kill him. He will kill those that are evil and those that commit evil and those who he feels beyond redemption. So yes, he will play judge jury and executioner ... but Creed rapes, guts and murders without discretion men, women and children. Daken's morals are growing even less scrupulous of late.

Wolverine is nothing like Sabretooth and Daken in many, many ways. C'mon now.

I don't see how Kitty and Bobby fit perfectly unless he's going on the whole opposites attract, but he can't really keep them together without out changing either Bobby to uber serious or Kitty to a more immature character. It doesn't work for either character in my opinion.

Just wanting to add something: I'd love to see Wolverine and Storm dating together (permanently). It's been so long since Wolverine haven't find a true lover (the one that doesn't get killed constantly!) I know Wolverine is extremely busy with teaching school, protecting the world and so much but he needs to step down and find some love. Seriously I would LOVE to see Wolverine and Storm together. I don't know if Storm is single at the moment or not (can anyone confirm this for me? Because I don't know if she still with Black Panther or not.) Just sayin'.

Until Wolverine and Storm are getting married, make Marvel mine!

She DID show hints of that kind of shapeshifting during her series. The ones I remember were growing extra arms and a face on the back of her head, shifting all her internal organs to different positions, and making herself flat and whispy to survive an explosion.

Not quite full-on tentacle arms like we see here, but moving in that direction.

Of course, with comics you can never rule out the possibility that it isn't actually Mystique at all.

@TheCowman: I hope that's the explaination. One of the deals with Mystique is that she can look like other people, BUT does not have the level of shape shifting like Morph or Skrulls. Or did Marvel decide to ignore that fact in true Marvel tradition of retconing every few months. Like they are now with this MARVEL NOW?

@Miss_Garrick: Well, she mentions that shifting like that is harder to do and she can't hold it as long, but who knows. Mutants kinda get a free pass when it comes to power tweaks. Especially since the whole "secondary mutation" thing.

Also, I forgot to list her clothing as another example of shifting into non-person forms. I'm not sure how long it's been officially canon, but her clothing is actually all her. So there's that too.

It does look a little more... blobby than Mystique's usual transformations. More like something from Venom or Random.
