WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN Creative Team Discuss Future Of The Book

The series' creative team discusses their plans for the future of the title.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN writer Jason Aaron and artist Nick Bradshaw were present at today's Marvel NOW! Liveblog. The pair geared up to discuss the future of WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN and explain why the heck Wolverine is kissing Storm on the latest teaser. The discussion took off without a hitch and writer Jason Aaron addressed the crazy ending of issue #18 off the bat. According to the writer, it was nice to see so many people get emotional about a moment in comics because it is indicative that people care. However, based on the preview pages to WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #19, below, it looks like we may be seeing more of a certain character after-all.

If anything we're trying to get back to where we were before all the AvX madness set in…A lot of the characters who pop up in the issue, I would love to have as part of the book," Aaron says, though the book already has a large cast. "Some you will see down the road…It's one of those proverbial great jumping-on points.

So, although issue #19 picks up right where #18 left off, it seems that it's still a great jumping on point for new readers because it is structured as this sort of "rebuilding" of the school. The issue will feature appearances form various characters -- many of whom we haven't seen -- in the upcoming series. According to Aaron, this next arc in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN will be a "callback to the Claremont/Byrne circus story," where Bradshaw will be drawing "a whole arc set in Frankenstein's Murder Circus." Finally, Aaron promises that no one gets shot in the head -- at least to for the next few issues.

However, it seems that Aaron isn't only taking cues from Byrne when it comes to this next story arc -- he also has big plans for Storm's character in the upcoming series, making her a part of the Jean Grey School. As for what other characters we can expect to see in the coming book, Aaron cites Cyclops in issue #21.

Besides all this, however, Aaron stresses that these characters are growing -- both the children at the school as well as the adults.

There's a lot of stuff to come with Idie and Quentin, not all romantic in nature. There's lots to come with Genesis, our Kid Apocalypse. Rick Remender have talked a lot about him. We've been shaping that story for a couple of years and have stuff planned as far as 2014. There will also be a surprising relationship with one of the kids…I know some of the hardcore X-Men fans want Kitty and Colossus, but to me, one of the big themes of Wolverine & The X-Men is change, these characters growing up. It's a book about family, about moving from childhood into adulthood, and Kitty and Iceman fit that perfectly to me. Once they were both the X-Men kids and now they're basically Professor X. They're bonding over that. They're not necessarily head over heels in love, but there's something there they want to explore…Even before Wolverine & The X-Men started, I had the feeling it would be something special. I want to stick around for a long time.

Writer Jason Aaron also clued fans into what they can expect in the coming books beyond issue #19. He cited, for example, the fact that issue #20 is "pretty much an Angel solo issue," which is something a lot of Angel fans have been wanting to see since the end of the Dark Angel Saga and Angel's return as a mind-wiped character.

Issue #20 is pretty much an Angel solo issue. We see him as the first graduate of the Jean Grey School looking for what he wants to do next. He needs to get an internship. He finds a new purpose in life. He'll be running up against Mystique and the new Silver Samurai. It plants the seeds for what's coming up with Angel and ties back to what Rick Remender did in the Dark Angel Saga…We've got big sprawling 'X-Men out in the world saving the day' adventures coming up in 2013. The seeds start to get planted starting this week with issue #19.

Clearly, Jason Aaron has a lot of plans for WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN! What do you think of the news so far? Are you looking forward to the upcoming issues? Let us know in the comments what you think of Aaron's plans for the series.

Dang, looks like Mystique got an upgrade.

I long to see Mystique make her debut in Spider-Man's world more than anything else in this whole wide world.

What does that have to do with anything

I kind of fell of this book a while back, not because it was bad but mainly because i am collecting over 60 different comics a month. Im dropping 10 of the books and im definetly re-adding this to my pull list, i loved the various cross overs between Unanny X Force and this, even if it was just a couple of panels here and there, it made the world feel more cohesive. Im also really keen to see what happens with Genesis, he is fast becoming one of my favourite new charcters.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE NEW MUTANTS?! That was the whole point of Hope/Scott using the Phoenix.

If Wolverine's gonna stick with anyone, I'd rather it be Domino (even though I'm sure she's gonna jump back in with Cable since they're in the new X-Force together)

If Storm's gonna get with anyone, I really think she and Quicksilver could get along pretty well...or maybe she can rekindle things with Forge

but NOT Wolverine and Storm...just not keen on that union

also, i get that these 3 new students (are there more?) fit the artist's aesthetic, but they look silly to me....and crackly skinned & winged girl, a shark boy and a guy with eyeballs randomly all over his body...meh

The only future I would find interesting would be the loss of Wolverine in the title

I get that Wolverine's issue was about kids. I'm more talking about how he's still benefiting from having an X-Force team and hiding it from his school's staff. A staff that left with him becasue they didn't want a mutant hit squad, period.

How is he 'benefiting' from it? He's not benefiting at all ... he and his team go through hell doing what they do to prevent the very worst elements from mass murdering ever again and they gain nothing in so doing.

I'm sorry, but Sabretooth rapes, tortures and murders indiscriminately and without restraint. He has proven himself to be far beyond rehabilitation. He needs to be put down before he guts another innocent person (like the defenseless woman he disemboweled on a whim in a recent issue for instance). Who's going to take Creed out, local law enforcers? Shya right. I'm all for knowing there's a team out there putting rabid dogs like that in a six foot grave. The Skinless man is another perversion. Another serial killer who gets off on mutilation and murder ... The Shadow King rapes the minds and souls of his endless victims.

Yes X-Force, please, by all means, rid humanity of their disease I say.

We have to understand it's absolute blights on humanity that X-Force was devised to do away with. Apocalypse, the mutant who keeps being reborn to commit genocide (or at least attempt such) again, and again and again. Who kills people, men women and children, as though they were less than insects ... yes, please, by all means ... stop him by any means necessary X-Force! No?

Here's the kicker; why should he have do divulge everything he is doing to kids and comrades alike when he believes he's sacrificing for the greater good and in hiding from them the darker, sadder side of life like that, is protecting them from certain harsh realities they need not be a part of, realities he would keep them from, and save them from living as he had and has, by any means necessary? He believes the world needs people like him to prevent those he loves from having to become killers like him. He's not being a hypocrite, he's manning up.

@Super_SoldierXII: the whole reason behind scott's x force was to protect mutants as well.

& even though it coincides with logan's philosophy that kids shouldnt be warriors.. hes fooling himself mutant children are going to have to learn how to be solders, because of how hated they are... the last school ended cause people kept killing off the students... if you cuddle the kids & Force them to be children your only weakening them for the dark future that lye's ahead

Wolverine & Scott aren't so different but wolverine is morally worse. Wolverine kills ALL the time hes a flat out murderer hes no different from sabertooth or Dakken. he will kill at moments notice... the only difference is he has a soft side for kids & hes wolverine so no one accepts his faults. X force is a necessary evil in order to deal with specific & dire threats but if scott should be condemned for that so should logan

I agree ... but there's a danger room in the freaken bathroom from crissakes. Safe to say Logan ain't the hand holding type. He takes them on field trips to intergalactic gambling dives. (One of their next field trips will be in the Savage Land). Wolverine is not coddling these kids. He's treating them like kids, letting them be kids, while not raising them to be weak, disillusioned brats who do not know how to handle themselves. They train hard in the intelligent use of their powers daily and learn how to defend themselves. This is still Wolverine we're talking about here.

When he took out Kid Gladiator with a pressure point, after the Strontian had taken out half the Avengers, he chided him whilst doing so that he shoulda stayed in school. There is indeed combat training to be had.

He simply thinks (and rightly so) the majority of their time should be in a school, not a battlefield and / or military training regimen for mutants. He feels Scott lost sight of that. And that just because they're different, and yes, that they may face imminent danger from those who fear them, they should not be robbed of their right to be kids. Prepared kids, but kids all the same.

Wolverine is extremely different from Sabretooth and Daken. See what I wrote above to delineate the differences for starters. The fact you say he isn't tells me you don't know the character at all. Wolverine will kill soldiers trying to kill him. He will kill those that are evil and those that commit evil and those who he feels beyond redemption. So yes, he will play judge jury and executioner ... but Creed rapes, guts and murders without discretion men, women and children. Daken's morals are growing even less scrupulous of late.

Wolverine is nothing like Sabretooth and Daken in many, many ways. C'mon now.

This so far, is the best comment

this is probably my favorite current ongoing series! along with uncanny x-force but that one is going bye bye... PLEASE TELL ME Chris Bachalo is still on this series!?! Bachalo's is one of my favorite artists right now! the only negative i have with the book is that he's not the sole artist. i'm not crazy for bradshaws art and wish they didn't share the art duties. other than that i love this series!!!!

What does that have to do with anything

It would explain a lot. Especially given the fact that Mystique disguised herself as Felicia Hardy during the course if Spider-Man's relationship with her in the 1980's before Mary Jane returned. That might have explained her behavior and motives that led to their break-up in the first, courtesy of Raven Darkholm. The mutant responsible for Peter x Felicia's relationship to crash and burn. And, she could have pose as Kraven's lover Calypso and controlled the Lizard to kill Spider-Man. Raven's that clever.

@FoxxFireArt: they did a one page discussion of it. they know about it and arent happy but accept it. basically he gets a pass because he's "wolverine" but cyclops, no, we hold him to a higher standard. that's the only thing i dont like about wolverine's squad, i can enjoy their books only if they dont bring up the whole cyclops thing cause they all sound like a bunch of judgemental hypocrites.
