William Fichtner Discusses the Upcoming 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Movie

The man playing Shredder talks about the role and answers if Bebop and Rocksteady will be in the film.

One thing is for certain: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is bringing big changes to the classic universe. One key indicator of this is the talented actor William Fichtner being cast as Shredder, whose real name in the film is Eric Sachs. One website, The Hollywood News, was able to chat with the actor and picked his brain about the movie. Apparently, this is going to be the "darkest version of the character."

“What I read about Eric Sachs in the script was great, and then how the character has been molded and changed when we started filming has become something really quite remarkable in terms of what we’ve seen before of the character.”

According to the site, Fichtner was "overflowing with enthusiasm about the project" and even confirmed that the classic characters, Bebop and Rocksteady, will not be in the flick. Lastly, he remarked on how the Turtles will look in the movie and he implied they'll impress. "They are some messed up mutant turtles!"

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th, 2014.

Oh, and one final note: if you're part of the crowd who isn't happy with the direction the film is taking, we strongly recommend checking out the comics IDW are publishing and even the Nick cartoon is plenty of fun. Basically, it's a great time to be a TMNT fan.

UPDATE

Fichtner provided a lot more information during an interview with Flicks and the City. First and foremost, it's clear this franchise is looking to expand because Fichtner admits he signed a 3 movie deal. Additionally, he addresses whether Shredder will wear armor.

"Shredder dons himself with armor, and that's who he is and that happens in this story. It's the backstory on how it all began with the turtles, that the character of Eric Sachs....It's not by chance that he knows the Turtles."

He also chimed in on how to team will look in the film.

"It always had sort of a bouncy cartoon feel to me, which is great, that's why it was appealing. That's not this movie...It's not like any Mutant NInja Turtles thing you've ever seen before. It's freaky, they're cool, and they're mutants and they look awesome. It's tough and it's going to be really, really great."

I am expecting the worst, that is, something like Transformers 2.

Eastman supports this movie 100%. So I'm gonna stay optimistic about the movie until I see it. And like Katzman said, the IDW comic is killing it. In my opinion one of the best comics being published. And the Nickelodeon cartoon is very entertaining!

Posted by Smart_Dork_Dude

@danhimself: As am I. Actually they lost me when they said Megan Fox was in it. When I heard they'd be postponing it, hopefully giving the script a MASSIVE overhaul, I had some hope. Then they said Megan Fox would be April............................ Yeah, no thank you.

Although I AM glad Shredder is still gonna be called Shredder and not "Shrayder" ugh -_-

Why does no one love Beebop and Rocksteady?

Why does no one love Beebop and Rocksteady?

IDW does.

@dark_guyver: I can't shake the feeling that Eastman needs to set his standards a little higher.

But I do agree about the IDW book. It and Green Arrow are my two favorite comics.

@xwraith: Sweet! I didn't know about this! I haven't read a lot of the recent TMNT books, but have a few of the 80s and 90s stuff.

Haven't read the IDW comic yet, the cartoon ROCKS!

Both the IDW comic and the current animated series rock, but I don't think the movies will turn out very good. My guess: It'll makes a lot of money, yet will be dispised by fans and critics alike.

@crazyscarecrow: If you're not reading the current book, you're missing out on something great.

@crazyscarecrow: If you're not reading the current book, you're missing out on something great! I know you was just told this, but I thought maybe if you heard it twice it would convince you even more to buy the book. I'm trying to push this book to everyone e who reads comics. It truly is something great!

I fear for this movie

A white guy as Shredder? I'll try to keep an open mind, but seriously, it's like they're not even trying.

Maybe he'll have other guys. Shredder always has 2 mutant thugs with him.

So many conflicted feels :(

I love IDW's TMNT book.

I think William Fichtner is brilliant in pretty much anything he's ever been in.

But I fear that this film will turn out to be a cinematic profanity which will leave you wanting to scrub yourself raw in a scalding shower afterwards.

Know what I think of when I think Shredder? Middle aged white dudes.

Remember when they were in talks with Ken Watanabee.......Damn you Bay and Liebesman

You're still pulling this juvenile foolishness?

As per the movie, I'll see it for what it brings to the table. I'm doubtful it'll surpass the 1990 flick, but I hope it is decent.

yes, i will admit, its not gonna be an amazing story by any means, but it will look great. just like transformers, everyone hates the story now, but back in 2007, we all pooped are pants at the fight scenes.

Posted by RisingBean

@allstarsuperman: The chastising was for you.

But since you mention the rest, I liked Transformers. But I was not impressed by the fights. It was tornadoes full of metal. I didn't know what was happening until it was over and robots were dead.

Well I will gladly stick with the IDW comics and the Nick cartoon then go see this travesty of a shame of a mockery that is crapping on my childhood. And frankly I know Bay is not directing, but we should still ship that man to another planet and be done with him.

Posted by TheCowman

Luckily the comic and cartoon are both brilliant.

Otherwise I would be despairing over how bad this movie is looking to be.

@dark_guyver: @xwraith: Thanks! I'll have to try it out! I'm taking a book of my pull list (Wonder Woman) and have been looking for something new.

"They are some messed up mutant turtles!"

Huh...interesting choice of words there...

Posted by Crom-Cruach

Why the f*ck couldn't they get a baddass japanese actor to play the Shredder?

Posted by mightyrearranger

I love Will Fichtner, but this needs to end fast so he can fill the role of Captain Cold in a Flash movie please. :)

i can't wait to see the nay sayers, and/or the negative nancy's eat their words.

I liked Transformers 2. It wasn't a good movie, but I liked it anyway. I'm not expecting TMNT to be a good movie, but I am expecting to enjoy watching it to at least some extent.

Hollywood white washing continues

Posted by Wolverine08

I guess turning a comic book character white doesn't get the same controversy turning a comic book character black does.

Messed up mutant turtles?! Really?! This movie continues to stray farther and farther from the original story. Thanks a lot Michael Bay for screwing these up for me.

Posted by tparks

Turtle's and the characters in their stories have had their origins altered several times. I'm not really happy with the changes, but I'm going to try and stay open-minded. I'm not really sure why they need to make odd "creative changes" to something everyone already loves, but it could be for the best. I'll reserve my judgement until I see it. IDW's TMNT is my favorite ongoing series, and they made some changes that worked very well for them.

Posted by Lvenger

Fitchner describing the Turtles as looking "messed up" does not raise my hopes for their aesthetic appeal or how their personalities will come through. TMNT is gritty and serious but there's a certain light hearted distinction between all the Turtles and the failure of the cast to recognise this in the quote does not raise my hopes for this movie at all. Michael Bay and the guy who directed Clash of the Titans is as far from a match made in heaven as it gets.

Posted by kriminal

the tricky part about the turtles is that they aren't just a fighting force, each one has a unique personality that makes the team work. im worried about them being the team I have always loved. however, I am seeing this no matter what

Posted by jimlforeman

This doesn't sound promising. Why have they made Shredder so different? Jesus, there are loads of actors who could played him. I hope Bebop and Rocksteady are featured in the next film (if they make one).

To be honest when I see a comic movie, im not expecting it to be nominated for an oscar. Sometimes the movies are just as silly/implausible as the source material. So people need to calm down because you've read worse stories, and just be thankful we got a movie adaptation.

Edited by Mellow_Hype

@crom_cruach: do people really want the stereotype of a Japanese guy and his white guy kung fu gang, the purple dragons

I wonder what the armor will look like...
