Will We See a 'Hellboy 3'?

Guillermo del Toro speaks on the prospect of a third film!

I am sure that Hellboy fans would be more than thrilled to see a third 'Hellboy' movie, but will it ever happen? According to a recent report by MTV, 'Hellboy' director Guillermo del Toro would love to make a third film to finish out the trilogy, but he says it isn't really up to him.

"I think that everyone should ask Ron [Perlman if he wants to do it]," He's doing 'Sons of Anarchy' without makeup. He's spoiled! He likes to be the big cheese without the makeup session...I would love to do it but the heartbreak for me is that I know how it ends and I don't know if I want to see that ending. But I would love to do it."

If you are a fan of Hellboy, then you probably have some idea of what del Toro meant when he said "I don't know if I want to see that ending," because frankly, neither do I. As a fan of the character, I think the last thing I would want to see is the end of 'Hellboy,' and based on an interview with Mike Mignola from a few years back, it seems his death is inevitable.

“The problem is ‘Hellboy III’ would be the end of Hellboy,” said Mignola. “And here’s where we have the big conflict. My version of Hellboy in the comics is a finite story, but it’s going to take me 15 years to get to the ending. If he makes ‘Hellboy III’ and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘But I’m not done yet'...My Hellboy is going to die, but I want to be the one who does that. And if del Toro does my ending, there won’t be a lot of surprise when I get to the end of the comic.”

I personally think it would only be fair if Mignola was the one to end Hellboy's life, considering he is the character's creator. I would much rather see Hellboy die in the comics before he does in the movies. What do you guys think? Would you like to see a third Hellboy film? Would you be okay with his death in the third film?

I'd feel bad for the guy if the movie scoops his ending

I don't read Hellboy, as im sure not everyone here does, so someone answer this, why must he die in the comics?

Posted by mimschkin

Who says the has to die in the film? I highly doubt Hollywood executives would allow him to do that anyway...

Gotta agree with Mignola on this.

The movie would completely rob the comic book death of it's impact, but I don't understand why he would have to die in the third movie. My biggest gripe is the fact he and Liz would have a kid in #3.

id like to see a third movie, but id LOVE to see Bruce Campbell as Lobster Johnson

Not a big hellboy fan so if a third one came out I probably will not go see it

Posted by geekinthecity

Just make the logical jump and shoot a B.P.R.D. movie? Hellboy 2 was clearly going in that direction anyway.

More like will we see Hell Boy 3D!

I don't see THAT big of a problem with Del Toro ending his version of Hellboy on screen  as long as it is different from Mignola's planned ending.
But ultimately I think it should be up to Mignola.

I'd love to see a third movie though...

i'd love to see a Hellboy III, but he should definitely dies in the comic first if that's what Mignola wants to do.

@Babs: Oh wow, how sad to hear that they may be killing of Hellboy ): but I would like to see it in the movie, it would be good to wrap it up... I laughed at the Ron Pearlman comment XD

I hope there won't be an HB3. Not for me.

Posted by Arthur James Windsor

i say they should write an alternative ending for the 3rd film since taking end away from creator is just wrong

Posted by ImperiousRix

This is pretty difficult, because I personally don't read Hellboy, but abasolutely love the movies.  I think del Toro really hit his stride with Hellboy II, and to see him not be able to do the follow-up after that terrific effort is really sad to me.
Then again, I completely understand why it likely won't happen.  Mignola is in control of the character, and it really should be up to him to have the character end in his own way.

I hope there's a 3, but I don't see why he would have to die in the movie-verse. Surely Mignola could say "Sure, do a 3rd but don't kill him, that's my story".

Posted by BKole
@mimschkin: Because Mignola's story has a beginning and a middle and an end. Hellboy will die because if a series continues to go on forever, it looses what makes it Special - See SPAWN. because that died years ago and is still going. Badly.

Hellboy is amazing, and driven and with a purpose. That's what makes it so compelling because YOU know you're building towards this finite end. Besides even if Hellboy does die. It doesn't mean it's the end of the HB franchise. BPRD and Lobster Johnson are strong enough to stand on their own.

I always thought it was obvious Hellboy was going to die in III (watch I & II if you don't understand) but I still would love to see it...however I had no idea Mignola had the same intention in which case I don't know about that...I'd still love to see the movie and IMO it doesn't really matter what order they appear because if a story's good I can re-read/re-watch it anyways

so yes I'd still like to see Hellboy III soon and I would also read Mignola's version with just as much excitement as I would otherwise

I recently read an article from del Toro that they ARE in the process of writing HB3 and I have also read that he says he would NOT do anymore than 3 HB movies as he didnt wanna drag it on ... personally I would really like to see it a new movie but I think Mignola NEEDS to be respected in this and if he says dont kill him they better DAMN WELL NOT!

The first 2 were good, so yeah, I'd go for it.

Posted by Mumbles

I'd watch another one. the 2nd one was better then the 1st movie

I don't want to see a Hellboy 3 if it means that Mike Mignola is going to have the ending he envisions adversely affected.  As the creator, he deserves that bit of glory, at the very least.

Posted by N7_Normandy

The first two were decent, but not phenomenal.  I'll see the third one most likely, but am not that excited to get a new one

I don't understand why he has to die in the movies.  There is no law that says the movies have to cover the entire history of the comics version in their alloted run.   Why can't it just cover the early part of his life and let Mignola tell the end part?

For example, I thought it was a mistake for the X-Men movies to bring in elements of the Phoenix storyline so soon.  Let us see them have more adventures as a team than killing off Phoenix and Cyclops after only 3 movies.

Posted by Pizawle

I would love it but Mike should be able to do his ending first.

Posted by mimschkin
@BKole:  I gather that for the comics, I just think the films ought to be different.
Posted by Violet-Eyed Dragon

wow.  funny that they rushed to make the first hellboy movies when they new it wasn't an infinite comic.
also i dont see why pearlman's involvement should be the contingent of making the movie.

Posted by Decept-O

I agree with a number of the posts.  I mean, the Hellboy movies diverged from the comics in some ways, so why should a third Hellboy movie have to have Hellboy die?  If he does, well I can understand the reasons why but I'd hoped for at least a couple more Hellboy movies.

Would be nice if they rocked another one of them Hellboy Animated kind of deals, I loved those.

Hellboy's Industrible!

Posted by bingbangboom

I would like a third but don't really think he has to die and even if he does... it is HELLBOY, I am sure there are ways to bring him back :P

Posted by 614azrael

If the creator has a problem with it then abide by it however i would like hellboy to die not out of spite but because if thats it then there is no revival concerns and we get n epic ending. Any time a hero falls its epic its the ultimant sacrifice
Posted by oiHooliganismoi

why does it matter! movie universe  comic universe to seperate things........... i think  Mignolashould give him the ok... and like death in comic last lol i want to kill him only to bring him back in a year or 2 with some1 else writting it lol give me a break look at captain america  batman and superman all died all came back

Posted by Hunter114

I liked Hellboy and some of Hellboy II, but wouldn't Hellboy III include the human-demon hybrid babies? I mean WTF!!! and the drunken singing thing and that thing right at the end as they roll into the credits... but the action was pretty good and the story was okay... the Hellboy / Liz reletionship thing could have been written a bit better.
Posted by jefprice

I don't think I understand why he has to die at all. To be honest as a huge fan of the book,s it'll kinda ruin it for me to a degree.

Posted by robokungfu

Guillermo doesn't have to kill Red.  Does anyone remember before all this hobbit snafu business when Del Toro talked at length about doing a Hellboy movie where he fights the classic Universal Monsters?  I like that idea lots.

Posted by ComicMan24

I loved the previous movies and I would like a third movie to be made.

Posted by Eyz

I would to see a third Hellboy movie!! :D
Couldn't they just, well, not kill him?!

Anyway, I guess I uderstand why Mignola wants to be the first to the the proper ending.

Posted by Danial79

Why must a character die to end a series?

Also, as much as I loved the Hellboy films, I'd rather see Del Toro start on At The Mountains of Madness! ;-)

Posted by manofsteel42

No! More! The 1st was tolerable but the 2nd one sucked and now they want a 3rd!

Posted by waw003

I wouldn't have a problem with Hellboy dying in the end, as Del Toro doesn't direct. I have no problem with his directing. It's his special effects. All of his films look like Pan's Labyrinth.

Posted by LiamRawson

Well, it's not going to be a surprise now, is it!

Posted by Robyn 666

I looove Guillermo del Toro and i would watch ANYTHING by him!!
Posted by Lemon

I hope so. I thought the second film was amazing. Really funny, and the action was well shot.

Posted by SpideyIvyDaredevilFan

Hellboy 3 is an intriguing thought, escpecially considering the 1st movie was a amzing. However, I really didn;t like the 2nd and I'm afraid that if they made a 3rd it might build off the terrible sequel.
Posted by H_B20

Ok so Hellboy is completely awesome.... and to kill him in the thrid movie? AND in the comics? I've never read the comics so he can die if that is to be but not in the movie seriously I mean who hates it when they kill the main character in your favorite movie? They didn't kill Indiana Jones so why should they kill Hellboy?

PLEASE DON'T KILL HELLBOY!!!!

Posted by xVikkix

we need dis movie!

Posted by Metatron_Da_Don

doesn't Hellboy have a plethora of stories, I guess it is Del Toro's vision and he is adamant to the script. I say make another script.

Posted by Z3RO180

well how about they make the movie and not kill hellboy.

there problem solved
