Will The Mandarin Be The Villain In 'Iron Man 3'?

Marvel plans to co-produce 'Iron Man 3' in China to reach Chinese audiences, but could their plans to shoot the film in China hint at the possibility of the Mandarin's appearance in the upcoming film?

When it comes to making movies, the goal of any film studio is always to reach the widest audience possible. So considering China has a population of 1.3 billion (according to the World Bank in 2010), it's no wonder why any film studio would want to reach that tremendous potential audience. The thing is, not just anyone can make a movie and distribute that movie in China; if you want to market a film to China, you need to meet their very strict guidelines -- particularly when the film is "foreign produced." So what's the best way to by-pass all the hurdles of making your movie accessible to Chinese audiences? Why, to produce the film in China, of course! Which is exactly what Marvel Studios and Disney have set out to do.

No Caption Provided

Based on the latest press release from Marvel and Disney, Iron Man 3 will be co-produced in China; a move that will inevitably open a lot of doors for the upcoming film in a variety of different ways. Based on the press release from Disney one thing is certain, distributing the upcoming film to China is top priority for both Marvel and Disney.

== TEASER ==
“The popularity of the Marvel franchise globally creates a huge opportunity to deliver fans yet another action packed film,” said Stanley Cheung, Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company, Greater China. “The co-production of IRON MAN 3 in China is testimony to the importance of this audience to Disney and the local industry capability to deliver a blockbuster title,” he added.

“We look forward to working alongside DMG to bring IRON MAN to the Chinese marketplace in a significant way. We are confident that Marvel’s stories will continue to be enjoyed by Chinese audiences, and adding a local flavor, and working with our new local partner, will enhance the appeal and relevance of our characters in China’s fast-growing film marketplace” said Rob Steffens, General Manager of Operations and Finance for Marvel Studios

One little tidbit of information from the press release definitely piqued our interest in a different way, however. According to the release, shooting for Iron Man 3 is expected to start in May of this year and move to China sometime during this summer. So, why does that matter? Well, one of Iron Man's biggest adversaries happens to come from China. The Mandarin was born into one of the wealthiest Chinese families and in the comics he consistently gave Tony Stark a run for his money. He is one of Iron Man's most menacing villains since he has the power to control ice, fire and has telekinetic and teleportation capabilities. Could Marvel be thinking of bringing the Mandarin into Iron Man 3? Could that be another reason why they may want to film in China? What do you think?

I know. I had the feeling that the Iron Man movies had been leading up to this moment where Tony will face his his intelectual equal and the worst threat he ever faced. This awesome moment is only a "What could have been" T____T

What? I thought that would give the next movie a bit more diversity among the villains. When it came to the first two films, one of the major complants I've seen is people want Iron Man to fight non-armored villains. I could see Living Laser's origins being tied for Tony's Repulsor technology and be the big baddie of the film that would give us at least two or three good battles, plus the special effects would make it look awesome not to mention give us a chance to see how Tony deals with a villain who is made of pure energy. Spymaster I thought would be a great way to challenge Tony's business side, while Iron Man is dealing with Living Laser, Tony Stark must deal with someone who is attacking his company from the inside and puts Tony is a situation that he can't simply take care of by blasting it with a uni-beam.

Shane Black (whatever the directors name is) stated his lack of interest for the Mandarin character claiming he was outdated and racist....

This is blatantly Marvel invoking their creative control, no wonder they lose so many directors

It's gotta be. It's been hinted in all the other films and how can 3 Iron Man films be made without the big guys arch-nemesis!?

Plus Iron Monger and Whiplash were way too similar.

For some reason when I first read this I didn't think of Mandarin but the movie Outsourced. Basically in outsourced they send US jobs to India where it is 5:1 (5 Indian workers for every 1 American), at the end of the movie they get outsourced to China where it is now 5:1 (5 Chinese workers for every 1 Indian). Therefore by math you can pay 25:1 (25 Chinese to 1 American).

Now that Iron Man will be in the Avengers and facing bad guys with powers, magic, and all the comicbook bullshit we have grown to love it makes more sense to have a villain like Manerin in it. Before Avengers I was on the side of those who thought that Iron Man should be facing tech related bad guys.

You can't sell a Movie to a Chinese audience where the bad guy is named Mandarin and is being played by a white guy.

My guess is a Mandarin-esque knock-off so not to offend anybody because I really can't see Sir Ben Kingsley playing anybody else.

My hope was that they would have used Ezekiel Stane and done a movie about these characters and their father's legacies.

wasnt the guys that caught tony in the first Iron man the 10 rings of Mandarin...thats at least what my friend said...but it would seem right to make the villain Mandarin.....unless they were gonna hold onto him for a Dr Strange movie or something...

Yeah, I heard about this too.

But then I thought about how Favreu tried to set up for Mandarin in the first Iron Man. It looks like from the very beginning, they've changed the Mandarin completely, making him the leader of what appears to be a Middle Eastern organization called "The Ten Rings." So, if my hope is right, Black took the hint, and shaped him into something new (and in my opinion) better. Or, they're going to do what they did with Whiplash and make him a combination of two villains. Either way, there's not a doubt in my mind that this movie will have Mandarin, in one form or another.

- From what I have read it looks like the villain will be some variation of Mallen from the Extremis storyline. They may add Mandarin as a behind the scenes mastermind, but I do not see him as a primary villain.

- Of course they could always just mix and match an opponent like in IM2 as stated earlier

Seems like you almost have to have Mandarin in an Iron Man film. Its almost like not having Red Skull in a Cap movie, or not having Joker in a Batman film. Just needs to be done

I heard that if they were to include the Mandarin it wouldn't be with 10 magical rings because they don't think larger audiences would buy into it, it'd be a tech-based ring or something.

If Jon Favreau would have stayed on he would have used the Mandarin....I believe it was his intention

Black didn't take any hint, he basically said Iron Man had a lousy rogues gallery, said a resounding NO to Mandarin, and is likely planning to do an Extremis storyline

The only way to see Mandarin is if Marvel forces him in...which they might, ....I actually think we won't see Mandarin, maybe a character similar to him...but definitely not the real Mandarin

At least they're keeping Don Cheadle and not getting another Rhodey. I saw somewhere that they were going to run off the (2005) 'Extremis' series. But I'd rather have the Mandarin, been wanting to see technology vs. magic since the first movie.

Well this series is smucked. Lol Mandarian was like Iron Man's main villain. Why would they ruin that for some Extremis crap. If the Asians don't like it too bad. Mandarin was awesome he had the 10 rings, sorcerery & martial arts. Yeah it's stereotyping but oh well. I love the character. But they edited Crimson Dynamo heavily probably because he is the Russian counterpart to Iron Monger. But Mandarin is basically the Chinese equivalent of Doctor Doom he's iconic & should be left untouched. Mallen was cool in Armored Adventures but I've never seen his comic counterpart so I hope that he'll be cool.

Mandarin for me is pretty much Iron Man's greatest adversary, and combined with the fact that there will be shooting in China, its only fair that he becomes the main villain. Mandarin all the way.

Pretty sure I heard that the Mandarin IS the villain for Iron Man 3. I heard it a year or more ago. Something about the terrorists in the first movie were connected to the Mandarin, if you paid attention there was a clue. And then something about how the writers had to figure out how to deal with Mandarin's magic rings. They couldn't figure out if they would be magical or scientific.

Something like that, but I am 100% sure that I heard that with my ears from some sort of commentary.

Yeah....make the villian a Chinese guy who ultimately gets defeated by the living symbol of the decadent American military-industrial complex. Should go over great with the Chinese audiences. Maybe during the epic finale battle between Iron Man and the Mandarin they can crash through a factory in China where slave-workers are cranking out Iron Man action figures.

YUS Mandarin! :) And possibly bring in Madame Masque as a minor femme fatale type role. But Shellhead's arch-enemy has got to make it to the Iron Man films! And if he doesn't, I will lose a lot of respect for the series as a whole. Other suitable arch-enemies that have found their way into live action movie adaptations include: Lex Luthor, General Zod (Superman), The Joker, Ra's Al Ghul (Batman), Green Goblin, Doc Ock (Spider-Man), Magneto, Sebastian Shaw (X-Men), Deacon Frost, Dracula (Blade), Blackheart, Mephisto (Ghost Rider), Loki (Thor), Red Skull (Captain America), Abomination (Incredible Hulk), Doctor Doom, Galactus (Fantastic Four), The Kingpin, Bullseye (Daredevil), Hector Hammond, Sinestro, Parallax (Green Lantern), and Malebolgia and The Violater (Spawn).
