Will Star Trek 2 Featuring Khan or Klingons?

Co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci talk about what we can expect from the sequel.

If it comes to comic book or nerd related movie sequels, the first thing that comes to everyone's mind is "who's the villain going to be?" Begin speculation. As soon as the sequel to the wildly successful 2009 Star Trek was announced, everyone was guessing who the villains were going to be. SlashFilm recently reported on some new developments as to who is actually going to be in the upcoming film.

Co-Writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orchi sat down with a UK Magazine and talked about what the audience wants and what they can expect.

Introducing a new villain in the sequel is tempting because we now have this incredible new sandbox to play in. On the other hand, some fans really want to see Klingons and it’s hard not to listen to that. The trick is not to do something that’s been seen before just because you think it will be a short cut to likeability.

This is what it comes down to. Do you want to please the fans or try something new in hopes to please the fans? The first film was a huge departure from what fans knew of the series, but it worked incredibly well, so if the writers decide to take this into a new direction, everyone should be understanding of it. Aside from the Klingon, everyone seems pretty excited to see Khan. Could Khan (KHAAAAAAANNNN!) be a part of the sequel?
== TEASER ==

Starting at a premise of what you want to see and then working a story around it is not how we do it. You have to start with what is the right story. And that if you can say “That’s a story that Khan fits into”, that’s how you get to that. Not deciding on a menu list of items and then seeing if you can’t string them all together.

My name is Ricardo Montalban... I was on an episode of Murder She Wrote.
My name is Ricardo Montalban... I was on an episode of Murder She Wrote.
This is one of those cases where I, as a fan of the first film and the other films, put complete faith in the writer's and directors of the film. I had no expectations for the "reboot," so when the film came around, I wouldn't be too disappointed if I didn't like it. When the film did come out, however, like many people, I was blown away. As cool as it would be to see Khan or the Klingon in this film, I'd personally be fine with whatever the writers come up with.

J.J. Abrams, the director of the first film, and so far only producing the sequel had this to say about the film slated for 2012: "The universe that Roddenberry created was so vast. And so it’s hard to say there’s one particular thing that stands out as what the sequel must be. Which is on the one hand, a great opportunity. On the other hand it’s the greatest challenge – where do you go? What do you focus on? But I’m incredibly excited about the prospects." What do you hope to see in this upcoming sequel?

I love Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek. Didn't become a fan until TNG. Loved TNG, liked TOS, and the movies were ok. Once   Gene Roddenberry left the franchise fell apart.   Abrams really breathed new life into the franchise. I never really like Khan very much though. Never saw what they hype was around his character. The movie Wraith of Khan had it's moments, but to me they didn't really revolve around Khan. I'd rather see a younger version of Khan too with a younger Doctor Noonian Soong who I think was one of the most interesting characters in ST. Something similar to or a continuation of what happened in ST: Enterprise. And I don't see why you can't throw some Klingons in the mix. Maybe they can show how Klingons got mutated.

I would love Klingons being in it.

Borg would be interesting too even though they didn't show up until TNG

I'm A fan of all of Star Trek, TOS, TNG, STV, all the rest and the movie. Since it's a new time line I'm good with most anything they come with within reason.
Khan from the original Space seed Episode redone and re-imagined would be nothing like the Wrath of Khan Movie so the possibilities are endless.  The Early Klingon Empire would also lead to endless possibilities.  Even a new villain could work if the story was right.
But what made this film work for both fans and non fans alike was that  it caught the spirit of the original show  in a new modern film style and feel. With a endless budget and free plot untied by past plots... it was able to be edgy and fun for all who saw it. It was a brilliant balance between both old and new sensibilities.
Give up one audience for another and it won't be as big a hit . Give up the on the old fans stand to loose re-watch money give up on causal scifi fans stand to loose the megabucks! What ever they do everyone seems to want them to succeed so that's must feel good! Good Luck guys!

A young Khan would be interesting. A retelling of the original Star Trek episode and they could go wherever they want'd with it. I can wait for the Klingons, although a mention would be appropriate... just a lil' foreshadowing. :oP

It better be Klingons, cause Khan is a waste of time. We've already been there, lets get somethin more normal outta this AU Star Trek. If it was Khan, they'd have to explain away the whole "I'm exactly the same because I was frozen in time BEFORE the change in the time line, blah blah blah". Klingon's are easier an way more interestin.

Besides the only interestin thin about Khan is the fact that in his movie they killed Spock. Not gonna happen again(so soon), so what's the point?

Ricardo was awesome, also i dont know, since most of people only know the "black" Klingons and dont remmeber them before being all black guys with a extrange thing on his head.
Also, since so people say they want to "redesign" the klingons, i just have to say, leave the Klingons alone, they are cool.

Why do you have to diss Ricardo? Douche.

Anyway, I would love for them to go back to the old series. Maybe they could do the cloud vampire :D. They could tap into the whole vampire craze XD.

I'm cool with whatever they do.

BUT if they do have Khan in it - Nestor Carbonell (Mayor from the Dark Knight & Bat-Manuel in the Tick) should be the one to play Khan.

I've been into Star Trek since TNG first aired and am a fan of all the films. I love Khan as a character, but I don't think anyone could fill the late Ricardo Montalban's shoes and it would be a mistake to try. So I'd prefer them to go for Klingons as the film's protagonists.

I loved the reboot.  I was a fan of the original films (NOT THE SHOW) but I was a lot younger and was easier to please.  The last film was like Ultimate Star Trek.  I think the makers have to please more the just Trekky fans, or that chic that went to jury duty dressed in full a star trek uniform.  I think the sequel will do well once Star Trek hits cable too, and people will see it on T.V. and go "That was a good movie, gotta see the next one on the big screen."

I never really liked Star Trek to begin with. I didn't like watching TOS or Next Generation. I didn't watch the first 10 movies. I did see a few episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise and enjoyed them. I only ended up watching it because there was nothing else on. I saw some previews of the new Star Trek and thought it looked good all on it's own. I finally saw it and loved it. It is a great film that can bring in fans that were never really into the franchise to begin with. So you don't have to make a sequel that only attracts original fans, but also new fans and keep a good series running.
