Why You Should Watch Arrow

Green Arrow is an awesome character and, luckily for us, he also has a pretty awesome show. Come see why we recommend giving it a watch!

Arrow has quickly become a huge hit for the CW. Not only is it appealing to us comic fans with its massive world-building, but it's also luring in the general audience with its legitimately enjoyable drama and action. Okay, maybe Stephen Amell being shirtless at least once per episode contributes a bit to keeping casual viewers tuned in, too. The show is now well into its second season and, if you're way behind or haven't even given the show an honest chance yet, we're going to tell you why you should consider catching up. If you have Netflix, this shouldn't be too difficult because the entire first season is currently streaming.

Doesn't shy away from the source material

No Caption Provided

First and foremost, Arrow isn't embarrassed by its source material. Yes, it's somewhat duplicating Christopher Nolan's "more realistic than your usual comic book material" approach, but it has still managed to implement a ton of aspects and people from the comic books. Many of the characters aren't just there simply for the sake of pleasing comic fans, either. The writers aren't just tossing names our way -- they're doing some serious mythos building with this show. They've introduced the League of Assassins, the Suicide Squad is slowly being formed, the Flash has been effectively teased, and there's a whole lot more. Even if a character is reduced to a bit role or only appears as a villain for just one episode, there's almost always a handful of easter eggs for us to catch and it's possible the character will reappear.

While the series initially felt like it would avoid stronger "comic bookish" elements (nothing wrong with that if it fits the tone, after all), Arrow has recently made it plenty clear that powers and enhanced abilities will play a big role in the show's future. Thanks to a talented team working on the stunts, they've proven they can handle the new kinds of physical challenges these super-human abilities will present. For example, the brief action bits with Solomon Grundy were absolutely a blast and watching Deathstroke take out people in the blink of an eye (so not an intentional pun) was surreal.

Moves forward while also looking back

No Caption Provided

As Arrow continues to establish its "current" timeline, it never forgets to reveal important bits and pieces of Oliver Queen's history. As the modern era gives us new developments to get all kinds of excited about, the flashbacks can often feel especially compelling and engrossing. Sure, we know what the eventual outcome will be with main individuals, yet these scenes still manage to feel engaging and that's a real testament to how well they're handled.

Not only do these jumps into the past give us a better look at Slade Wilson's downward spiral and Sara Lance's transformation, but they also continue to reveal how Oliver's time on the island has drastically altered who he is. Slowly but surely they justify how an irresponsible and spoiled playboy could be molded into a focused and determined hero. Even if an episode is feeling somewhat lackluster with its modern era plot, odds are the flashback scenes are doing a commendable job instilling key changes in Starling City's hero.

Strong supporting cast

No Caption Provided

The show aims to develop and focus on Oliver, but it has also created some solid supporting characters. Diggle -- Oliver's bodyguard turned sidekick -- has a great dynamic with the emerald archer. In fact, he's so cool that writer Jeff Lemire decided to bring the big guy into the comic book universe as well. Felicity's full name may have appeared in the pages of older comics, but this take on the character is completely different. Her lovable personality makes her a great addition to the cast and, to top it off, she often keeps Oliver honest. You can't help but root for these two sidekicks, and this isn't even taking into account other characters like Roy (they're doing something completely new with him), Quentin Lance, Moira Queen, and Sara.

Deathstroke!

No Caption Provided

You've heard of Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke, right? If not, all you need to know is he's a seriously badass and formidable mercenary in the DC universe. In the pages of the comics, he has some history with Oliver, and Arrow has decided to turn this very awesome villain into one of the show's big bads. While Slade has technically been appearing for quite some time, seeing the version of Deathstroke that we know and love is a relatively recently development. They've been giving the foe a slow burn, but it looks like the bad guy is finally going to step into the spotlight and play a major role in Oliver's world. If that doesn't get you to tune in, we just don't know what will.

A new episode of Arrow will air February 26 at 8/7c on CW. We'll definitely have a review posted later that night, so be sure to check back then.

I've only seen the pilot, but I was pleasently surprised. I had presumed it would aim for the teen soap-opera vibe that Smallville devolved into, but they managed to evoke a far more mature vibe, more along the lines of a mainstream action series with some very impressive production values considering it's a costumed superhero show.

One thing was for sure; that was a really effective pilot. It was satisfying as a standalone story and setup the characters quickly without feeling crowded with exposition and world-building. Eventually I'll watch the rest of the first season on Netflix, and as always: every show reserves the right to disappoint at any moment. But here's hoping for the best!

@scrappydont27: Do it. I was pretty cold on season one, dropped off during the Huntress episodes. Season two has been really good so far.

This is exactly what I did. I can't put my finger exactly but the show feels...stiff? Also, the actress that plays Laurel isn't a good fit, she's not a great actor in my opinion.

I still have to finish season one. I'm almost done. I seriously hate Laurel with a burning passion and I hate Tommy about as much. Everything else on the show is great, but good god I HATE those two! Beyond annoying...

On a brighter note, Stephen Amell is playing a great Oliver Queen. So much that I hope Arrow does cross over with DC's Cinematic Universe. He really does enjoy the roll, I've been following him on Facebook and he is always so ecstatic about the character and the show as a whole!

So your praising a show for not shying away from its source material and mention stuff like the league of assassins and suicide squad things that have nothing to do with Green Arrow ya they seem to be really diving into that Green Arrow source material tell you want when the show stops being a batman ripe off i will take a look

I love this show, I'm just confuse as to how the network refuse to the 2011 Wonder Woman show but chose this show instead. I mean this show is great, but wouldn't Wonder Woman had been the better option she has a larger fan base.

This show still has some really bad CW aspects, but it's still pretty awesome.

The amount of different plot threads going on is its strength.

Oh, and it doesn't 'need' to be in the same continuity as the movies.

You'd think that comic book readers would be okay with multiple continuities at the same time...

I can't say anything that comes from CW is good, this show is typical CW. Not good. Though if you want a real Arrow story read his current run its really good.

I usually wait until I have 3 or 4 episodes recorded and then have a mini binge. Only show I do that with. Others I wait until the season is over.

Arrow is very compelling and fun to watch. Unlike the shying away from it's source material and boring Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. Watched the first episode of that yawner and called it a day. But Arrow, oooh whee! I freakin love the name dropping and slow burning and character development.

As a side note, not sure why Oliver is being such a jerk with his mom. His reaction doesn't make much sense to me. And no, not really a spoiler. Watch it and figure out what I'm talking about.

I understand it quite well, if you have a mom who constantly lies to you, you don't just let it go. He actually did the smart thing by just walking away and maybe having her try to earn his trust back, it could have went the other way with them yelling at each other, which isn't a good idea.

I completely agree with this great article. The show is fantastic and I recommend it highly. The balance they have struck to please us comic book fans and the general viewer is brilliant and I think it sets a good example that comic book characters can be used in television shows/movies, so hopefully this leads to more comic book tv shows using the characters we love from comic books.

Arrow overall is pretty good. Green Arrow is my favorite comic character and at first i was very skeptical about this show but it delivers and it sure beats out Agents of SHIELD. Obviously some episodes are not as good as others but for a comic show it does a great job. My favorite part is probably Ollie, Dig, and Felicity as a team and if you do like arrow I suggest start reading Jeff Lemires run on Green Arrow starting with issue #17.

This is currently my wife's favorite show on TV. I'm really enjoy it as well, but my wife has gone so far as to start collecting the "Arrow" based comics (not Green Arrow, just Arrow). It's a great show, shame it took me so long to start watching it.

IF ya'll like Arrow give Spartacus a try you may want to like watch the pilot and than skip to "The Pit" Ep 4 if memory serves. Either way both shows take their limited budgest and incorproate them into the style of the series while attacking the melodramatic and camp aspects of the series with earnesty and affection. STephen Amell sucks for the first half to 8 episodes of seaosn 1 but he gets better. (he still can't seem to move his arms but that's adorable). That's wht makes Arrow great it's earnest in intent and dosent look down on its souce material. It's totally series while still looking like gritty camp. Compare that approach to say Man of Steel which has no sense of well emotion and has an unearned serious streak in it that makes it utterly inert.

I'm a bit bummed that the show has moved away from the more socio-political themes of the first seaosn but it's understandable.

And hey yea DEATHSTROKE! Mannu Bennet is excellent. Caity Lotz is like terribly great, what she's been given to work with is largely melodramatic reaction stuff but I just like something about her and he character o Sara Lance. Same goes for Amell and Oliver Queen.

For some lolz and yes I kinda like it because watching Amell do the salmon ladder shirtless is kind of a hilarious reversal of the male dominated comics sexualizing the male figure over the female one (not that they don't totally do that either)

Absolutely agreed. Even if there are parts that I rolled my eyes at for taking from the Nolan trilogy, it's really enjoyable and the characters are their own. I didn't like GA before watching the show and at first I had no interest in it, but I started with Season 2 and I can say I'm on my way to being a real fan of Green Arrow.

Also, Manu Bennett's giving some pretty solid performances. I'd say he probably has the widest acting range on the show.

Agreed, I think Bennett is pretty great
