Why the Lizard isn't the Best Choice for a Spider-Man Movie Villain

With the Spider-Man movie franchise being rebooted, a different villain could have been used to kick things off.

You can't have a great superhero without great supervillains. When it comes to comic book movies, this is a crucial factor in how cool the movie can be. Fans will flock to theaters to see their favorite heroes on the big screen but there is a need to for having the best choice in a nemesis.

Spider-Man is known for his colorful rogues gallery. He has many great villains to choose from. In the previous trilogy, we saw Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom, Sandman and Harry Osborn taking up his father's mantle. For the fourth movie, there were rumors of Vulture or Lizard being the villain but the decision to start over put a stop to that.

No Caption Provided

Last week, Mat wrote about why fans deserve the Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man but because we don't always agree here at Comic Vine, I'm going to make the argument that the Lizard is not the best choice as the villain in this movie.

== TEASER ==

I will admit, the Lizard isn't my favorite Spider-Man villain. But that isn't the case for this argument. It is true that the Lizard is a known Spider-Man villain. He has been around since the beginning of Spider-Man's career (in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #6). He's also appeared in just about every incarnation of Spider-Man animated series over the years.

Looking back at the Lizard's origin, it's pretty straight forward. Curt Connors was a surgeon and lost his arm "during the war." After that he shifted his focus to reptiles and became one of the world's leading authorities on them. He believed if he could figure out the secret of how reptiles could regrow missing limbs, it would be a benefit to mankind.

No Caption Provided

Unfortunately in his rush to unlock the secret, he ingested an experimental formula which transformed him into the Lizard. With his human mind diminished, a new line of thinking emerged. As the Lizard, he was determined to make himself and all reptiles the new rulers of Earth.

No Caption Provided

In other words, he wanted to use his serum to make alligators and snakes smarter so they could take over the world. That's a great motive for a supervillain, right? How he would know that a serum that transformed a man into a man-sized lizard would make reptiles have an increased intelligence is something that wasn't clarified.

It is great that we won't be getting a simple rehash of movie villains we've already seen. The Lizard has the potential to be a good movie villain because it's easier to accept a scientist being transformed than to see a man turn into a pile of living sand or another be able to mentally control mechanical arms. As a reboot of the franchise, the Lizard doesn't seem like the best choice.

No Caption Provided

In his early appearances, it was pretty much the same story. Connors would transform into the Lizard and want to try to take over the world with his reptile friends. It wasn't until the recent Shed storyline in 2010 where Lizard truly became a menace rather than a giant lizard in purple pants with a lisp. In Shed, Lizard became hardcore. The story showed how savage and deadly he could be. This would be an interesting angle and adding a more horror element could definitely take the franchise in a different direction. But that's not really what's needed at this point. If this is a reboot, the classic elements of Spider-Man should be present. We need a light-hearted Spider-Man full of quips rather than a dark and brooding Spider-Man (especially since we've already caught glimpses of that in the last film).

Fans like Mat may have been waiting for the Lizard's big screen debut but it would be better suited for a second or third movie. Heck, I'd love to see more elements from Shed or even Torment with some Kraven the Hunter action thrown in.

The Lizard could be a cool Spider-Man movie villain but the filmmakers should have gone with another character for this first movie in the new franchise. If it were up to me, I would have gone with Mysterio or even Kraven the Hunter (and Chameleon could even be added in with either). We'll have to wait and see if this version of the Lizard has what it takes to carry the role of Spider-Man's nemesis.

I think Lizard as the main enemy suits the purpose of this movie to be honest.

I've seen the movie yesterday...

I'm sorry,....but would it be wise to leave your "detailed" insight to yourself and not post it on a site that consists probably over 90% of people who has never seen the movie?

I would'nt consider the few things I said "detailed" at all. I avoided all possible spoilers. In my opinion I just confirmed a few of the obvious things one could expect after the trailer and stories here or anywhere else.

Yeah,...well next time please keep your assumptions over whats obvious to yourself.

Also, about saying this films gonna have a dark and brooding Peter, wrong, haven't you seen the trailer? He sneezes webs into a guys junk!

I never said this movie would be dark and brooding or have no humor. What I said is with the Lizard, going a dark route like in SHED, where he terrorized and ATE his son, that'd be something different. THAT's what wouldn't be needed for a first movie reboot.

Also, to those that are in support of the Lizard, I'm saying he's not the best choice "as the villain in this movie."

Oooooh,...how I would love to see the SHED storyline on film, maybe a little different though.

Ok - I'm going to say it...

If your going to write an article about debunking the Lizard - How about Validating your point?

Nowhere in this article do you get the notion that he wasn't the best choice in fact very much the opposite:

I think the Lizard is fine as a first enemy, and listening to their thoughts about the allegory in this film it makes thematic sense too. It remains to be seen how much they capitalise on that, though, obviously.

However, my concern with the Lizard and Peter's relationship - which I'll admit is my speculation based on snippets from the trailers - is that they seem to blame every super-human element of this film - and the video game - on Oscorp and the research of Connor and Peter's father. Now that's fine too, I guess, but my hopes for a reboot of Spider-Man was that you'd invite the more fantastical science fiction elements of the 80s and 90s era of the comic. They had the opportunity to establish a tone and "universe" for this movie that doesn't make Venom stick out like a sore CG blob thumb. Based on the trailer and the vibes this is sending out, I'd even say this universe feels more limited than Raimi's, and if this'll deal with pseudo-scientific villains, too, only presented in gloomier light, then that's a wasted opportunity in my opinion.

But really, in a post-Avengers - and even to a degree X-Men - movie world it's easy to get greedy. I kinda want every film to have as obviously an expansive universe "off screen" as those do. It may just be that I feel short changed when all the super-human and comic booky stuff feels contained - established and played out - in the one film these days. It reminds me of the mindset these things were done with back when super hero films - for that very reason - were sorta lame.

Honestly I haven't read any early reviews for the new spiderman movie but the trailer seems to make the lizard look like a bad guy all around. He even sounds menacing when he's Curt Connors in the trailer. I really hope they don't turn him into a two dimensional villain and show he is actually a good person, at least his human side.

Also doesn't that whole plot kind of sound like Spiderman 2 with Doctor Octopus? He was a person that Peter really respected and admired and then turned into a villain. It gives a seen that been there feeling to me.

If you had read the article carefully you would see he clearly says how overall The Lizard doesn't make an interesting villain and it wasn't until the SHED storyline that he got interesting but he feels that storyline would be too dark to use in this Spiderman movie. He goes on to point out better more interesting characters to use as villains. This isn't the best article ever but I think your way off base saying its one of the absolute worst.

I don't understand the argument against him. So G-Man would have preferred another villain for the first film in a potential new Spider-Man series. OK. That's it?

The scorpion would be great, mysterio could be hardcore if the right budget was issued, in fact i think mysterio would work better as a movie villain than a comic villain. But let's wait and see what happens with the lizard he could be very cool.

I think the first villain should have been a criminal. Not somebody with plans to take over the world, not somebody trying to do something terrorist-ish or anything. Somebody robbing banks, or trying to steal technology, or something along those lines. I think Spider-Man should have started out in this franchise establishing himself as a crime fighter. Then as he gains attention, people with bigger, badder intentions will go 'to get my plans going I'm going to have to get rid of this Spider guy'.

I think Kingpin, Shocker, Rhino, Mysterio, or Electro should have been the main villain for this movie. But I'm not against the direction they're taking this.

This also opens up for Kraven to come to the big screen, seeing the lizard people, and the spider guy, it could be his 'big catch'. It also sets up a more interesting premise for Green Goblin. His powers are from spilicing genetics from other animals, rather than 'Super steroids'.

So I both agree and disagree with this article basically.

I think Lizard is an alright choice for the first film. It appears they've re-worked Curt's origin to tie in with Pete's history (fitting since it's an origin film and all that), he's a new villain for the general audiences to learn about, and, even though his plot will likely be reduced to "Lizards are great! I will transform all of you! Muwhahaha," he's at least capable of providing something that's absolutely key for this first installment - excellent action.

I'm really hoping we'll eventually see Kraven/Chameleon, though. It makes sense since this film will be all about the public debut of Spider-Man, and now that he's in the spotlight, it'll get Sergei's attention.

Umm... Scientist rewriting his entire genetic code into a half reptile-half primate is more realistic than a man with an AI controlled set of mechanical arms?

Wow, so glad someone mentioned about Doc Ocks mechanical arms being more believable than a man/lizard. That was seriously a face to palm moment in this article. Also kudos to the dude who replied to the guy who described the film plot from his viewing, it was still too much to give away regardless of the original posters views. On topic... The lizard was built upon in the previous 3 films and would still be fresh in people's minds even though this is a 'reboot'. It was a wise choice as a villain who has enough personal attachment to affect Peter emotionally. Adding team ups or more villains is a silly idea when all it comes down to is better scripts. Any one villain can pose enough threat with a good writer...except maybe Captain Bommerang... Also just to add, people mentioning King Pin may not realise that Fox own the rights for him. Remember DareDevil? Sorry to remind people who tried to erase that flick :)

It could really interesting if they focused on the reptilian brain and maybe a "devolution" of the brain. How cool would that be? A villain who's only emotions are fear and hunger. He's not out for vengeance, but he's not above screwing over other people. It would also be interesting as they're completely apathetic; it's not the people he kills are lesser beings, they just got caught.

It seems like he'd have to be a secondary villain in that case (it's not like he goes out and antagonizes Spiderman), but it could be something new and interesting.

I've been waiting for The lizard to appear for a while. My biggest upsets outside of design have to be the actor they used to portray him.

Dylan Baker was great as Curt Connors, but then they cast an English actor. Granted Alfred Molina is English as well, but he nailed a variant of Doc Ock never seen before. For the Lizard, he's an insane dictator with a science degree and scales. I love him to death, but in truth that's what he is.

IF the Lizard was introduced as a more animalistic monster instead of another mad scientist with a grudge, then he'd be unique enough for those who haven't read Shed to stomach and watch. I'll still be seeing the film, but I'll have my issues with it. To this day, Spider-man 2 is the best Spidey film yet released IMO. Either this film beats it, or it becomes another Spider-man 3.

I would have to disagree with you on one point Itbrd. I think it would be rather interesting to see how the reboot handles the villains that Raimi did. If the reboot is as good as it looks then I would love to see how they handle the big-leaguers like Venom and Green Goblin. I bet Webb would blow the audiences away with a great portrayal of those two villains. Now Sandman and Doc Ock on the other hand just leave them out if you ask me they don't deserve a spot on Spidey's top 10 villains list. Also with a brutal depiction of Venom could come an even more brutal Carnage- More brutal than anything Raimi would have done in Spiderman 4.

So, who does everyone want to see in the movie instead of Lizard? And it can't be one that's already appeared in one! I say give the Lizard a chance but aside from him: Scorpion. Carnage would be cool but it wouldn't make sense for him since Venom needs to appear first. Electro, Chameleon, Rhino, Vulture, Shocker, Mysterio, and Kraven are more like sequel villains. Mysterio and Kraven are in this category because they're the type of villains who have heard about Spiderman after he's already beaten one major foe and decide that he would be a worthy challenge for them.

I've seen the film yesterday since it is already released here in the Philippines, and I say that

1) The Lizard is an okay villain for this part. The film is a reboot so it starts again with the (re)introduction of Peter Parker and all that, so i think a villain with a pretty simple story and simpler powers (compared to mysterio, chameleon, etc). Dr. Curt Connors is also personally related to Peter Parker, in a way that Norman Osborn is related to Peter in Raimi's Spider-man 1, so it is more fluid to establish a connection along with the (re)introduction.

2) I would still prefer Spider-Man 1 (without 2 and 3) over the Amazing Spider-man 1. :)

@DoctorTrips: There was a time when I believed that if a superhero got a movie, the villain on that movie would have to be his greatest enemy. If that movie got sequels, they would introduce other villains; but the first movie had to feature the hero's greatest villains. In Christopher Reeve's Superman, the first villain Lex Luthor. In Tim Burton's Batman, the first villain Joker. In the earlier Spider-Man series, the first villain was Green Goblin. Maybe the villains are used in terms of popularity.

I never expected people to rally behind the lizard and or call him spider-mans best and most interesting villain. Well as you might expect I think the lizard is one of the worst spider-man villains and not interesting at all. Lizard is the main reason I'm not excited about this movie, and will probably wait two years for it to come out on netflix, then I'll Ignore it for two more and wait till I'm trashed at 3am before I give a crap to halfway watch it.

I think this "reboot" is taking into consideration that the reboot before it happened only ten years ago and anyone watching this iteration has most likely seen them already. If they have Green Goblin kill Gwen in the next movie I believe it would be an incredible ride for fans without having them think "hey we just saw spider man fighting a goblin a few years ago".

Anyone else think a great move would have been to bring in Kraven? Do not have Kraven working alongside the Lizard, have him hunting the Lizard (and Spider-Man as well), and do not give him the stupid bushman getup, have him in more traditional/modern hunting gear. He would force Spider-Man to focus on more than just the Lizard: Pete would have to try and defend himself against his former mentor, protect said former mentor from Kraven, protect himself from Kraven, and do the "who were my parents" thing!

I would like to see The Kingpin or Shocker, both could be done in a unique way giving them a more realistic approach (Specially Shocker) with the origional elements that make young Spiderman awesome, look what Chris Nolan managed to achieve with Batman and I perfer Spidey over Batman any day of the week and to me that is where the reboot should have started, building for a more epic storyline than what seems to me as a rushed average job. In the first few trailers where you see Spiderman runnig across buildings the special effects looked very cheap, it was almost like an old xbox game trailer for a while. Think this reboot will be good but they could have done better.

There's nothing special about the Lizard, we have seen things like that before. A villain that would do the job right would be Vulture or Scorpion. I would enjoy the movie much, much more with one of them, than with the appearance of the Lizard.
