Why Fans Deserve The Lizard in the 'Amazing Spider-Man' Film

Years of set-up have finally come to this the Lizard is in the main baddie in the Spider-Man film.

No Caption Provided

The Sam Raimi Spider-Man franchise took the web slinger and put him onto the big screen in a HUGE way. While the Blade series may have been the true start to this new era of great comic book films, Spider-Man truly took hold of the idea and brought it to the mass market, and more importantly, all ages. Spider-Man combine good film making with comic books. An idea many people thought was close to impossible to accomplish.

Sam Raimi's run on Spider-Man has come to close after three films, and there's one thing most fans wanted to see but never got: The Lizard as a villain. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem. Many people would just say it's fans complaining that their favorite character isn't getting the screen time he or she deserves. With the Spider-Man series, it's much different because the Lizard was set-up in Raimi's run, in depth. Now, with Amazing Spider-Man right around the corner, fans finally get to see the Lizard on the big screen, and the fact of the matter is that the fans deserve it.

Raimi's first Spider-Man film broke all sorts of box office records for its time back in 2002, and with the success of the film came two sequels, which ended up setting up a classic Spider-Man villain: Dr Curt Connors, the man who would become The Lizard.

No Caption Provided

The role of Curt Connors in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 was played by Dylan Baker. He had smaller parts in each film, but he was a source of knowledge and a potential role model for Peter Parker. Fans clamored for two movies as they saw him on screen, and they patiently waited for Connors to turn into the Lizard, but nothing happened. There were rumors on the net that there would be a fourth Spider-Man film and it would feature Curt Connor's amazing transformation, but obviously, that never happened.

No Caption Provided

Instead, fans get a reboot, of sorts, of the whole series. This time, Andrew Garfield takes the reigns as Spider-Man, and the villain in the film is none other than the character they've been trying to set up for two movies, the Lizard.

This villain first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man 6, back in 1963, and he is a staple villain in the Spider-Man universe. Lizard has appeared in 50 issues in the Amazing Spider-Man volume alone, as well as countless appearances in Marvel Tales, Spectacular Spider-Man, Sensational Spider-Man, and many other Spidey and non-Spidey books alike.

Why does it matter that the Lizard is the main baddie in this film? Well, he appeals to a wide-variety of fans, from hardcore Spider-Man readers to the occasional Spidey-Fan. On top of that, he's appeared on many of the Spider-Man cartoon series, so many children are very familiar with the character. He appeals to a wider audience than a lot of Spidey's other villains.

On top of that, using Lizard as the main villain can make this more than just your average Spider-Man film. From just the few glimpses fans have seen of the character, there seems to be a horror element present to the character, and in turn, this film. The Lizard isn't a strategic, thinking man's character. He's a beast, a killing machine, and one that will do whatever it takes to reach his goal. The Lizard is a beast, and one that reminds many people of the hundreds of horror films featuring some sort of mutant creating havoc across town. This is not saying this is going to be a straight up horror film, but you can expect to see a few scary moments in this upcoming film.

No Caption Provided

What's really going to make this the perfect bad guy for fans, and not just because of the fight scenes. Some of the best villains in comics are ones that have a connection to their heroes. While I mentioned that the Lizard is essentially just a brute, the man inside him, Dr Curt Connors, is a mentor to Peter Parker, and someone Peter respects. How do you stop a man you respect that can't control what he's doing? It's going to be pretty awesome to see how this plays out in this film, and more importantly, it's not a jobber villain. It's a character fans deserve to see.

Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Rhys Ifans as Dr Curt Connors, hits theaters everywhere on July 3rd. What do you guys think about the Lizard in the upcoming film?

The Lizard is probably the main reason why I'm even excited for this movie...on top of my gal Emma playing GS. I definitely am looking forward to this movie.

Looking forward to it. The design looks really good but I'm not that much of a fan of the face. It doesn't look like the lizard, IMO. I am very happy he has the lab coat.

The Lizard has always been my favorite Spider-Man villain and I'm hugely excited to seem him in live action. I love the fact he retains a Ditko-esque look too. The main appeal of the character, for me, is that he's like a 1950s B-movie monster; like if you took the doctor from the original 1958 Fly, made him beastly and cruel, and pit him against Spider-Man.

I'm glad my initial impressions were off and the Amazing Spider-Man will turn out better than I expected...really hope I don't have to take back saying that.

I hope they do this the way you describe, but I don't like the Lizard's design in the movie! Shades of Godzilla (the remake with the baby raptor-looking things hatching out of eggs)...

The costume and actors I like, but because of the Lizard I am not too optimistic.

CALLING IT: Amazing Spider-Man will suck

super stoked it looks like they're going with the whole, "everyone needs to be as perfect as me" angle, as opposed to the mindless beast interpretation's we've been getting.

Looked at the trailer and Peter seems a bit douchey with the hair and the skateboarding... I mean I wont miss emo Tobey McGuire but its weird seeing a more sexed up Peter Parker. I guess they want him to appeal to (young) female audiances too this time.

It looks better than the Raimi movies (not suprising really considering its newer), the cast looks better, the villain looks better... but still the Amazing Spider-Man doesn't interest me for reasons I do not rightly know. I look at the trailers and think "meh" I'll maybe watch it on Box Office if I feel like it. I feel the same way about the Dark Knight Rises (though that is more to do with the Dark Knight killing my interest in Nolan's batman saga)

And I want the Proto-Goblin....oh right, the actor doesn't want to be involved with those violent things and blablabla. Just stirring the discussion in a different direction. Lizard should be cool. Kraven would be cool too with the right story. Or Morbius!

Kinda unrelated, but I hope that when they make a sequel (And they probably will) they make Electro the villain. Not only is he my favorite spider-man villain but he almost killed spider-man during there first battle. He'll bring a good amount of challenge for spidey if the put him in the next movie.

My friend saw the premiere in London (She's in school there) and apparently there's a scene that is straight up terrifying (Yes, it's that one in the lab), where the Lizard is taunting Gwen because he knows exactly where she is.

I stopped going to the theater for comics movie after iron man and i don't regret seing all the other for free on my TV when there are on the air.

Most of them were bad or super bad. Like 1h30 of movie with 45 sec of nice scene or sometime i had the impression to watch "Mavel title the movie, the trailer extended" because they put all the not boring scene in the trailers.

I think the best reason for the Lizard is he could conceivably have a connection to Spider-Man's creation. The human-animal hybrid thing works for a number of Spidey villains and the mad scientist thing works too. In Ultimate Spider-Man they did the mad scientist thing with Osborn and Doc Ock, but I think this works even better than that because Connors would have an extremely personal stake in developing this process.

its true. raimi did a good job making curt connors a friend and role model, while peter wasnt super personally connected with the lizard when they first fought in the comics considering it was in florida, i think he still had respect and looked up to him because his scientific reputation so it gave the story that emotional tug when spider-man finds out the lizard is curt. hope they can do with that with this film, im excited to see it!

  • First, let me say my opinion is biased because I am a DC guy.
  • Second, let me say I truly believe Marvel makes better movies.

With that being said, I don't think this movie is going to be worth spit. I think it is going to be a watered down mess that is designed to pander to the masses. Disney is trying to make an answer to Twilight using an existing IP. I just don't think it is going to happen. I hope I'm wrong. I'll be there on opening weekend to find out, but I think I'm right.

I have to admit, seeing the Lizard being the main villain is a positive idea. Because he is a classic character, and an ally in human form. It makes sense to turn things around, even for a different take on Spidey's clashes while being a hero as a human and superhero.

Not a fan of the Lizard, but don't dislike him either. The use of the character lacks the weight it would've had because of the reboot, but I think they could pull some solid relationship building off between Pete and Connors

@Tyrisis: I'm a DC guy too, and I love Marvel Movies but I don't really see where you're coming from with the second statement. Nobody has really tried to make a copy to the twilight series, why would anybody want to? The idea with the movie is to try and bring in more than just the comic book fans, but I honestly think this is going to be better than Raimi's movies. Maybe I'll be wrong, Maybe not, we'll all have to see the movie and form our own opinions.

So you're the one... It's best not to worry about the Internet opinions, because half of these people probably thought Raimi wasn't entirely at fault with Spider-Man 3. Evil Dead sucked.

I liked this article, it was well written, but I kind of hate the title. "Fans deserve" smacks of entitlement that I really really hate.

But anyway, it will be cool if that horror movie vibe they've been going for with the Lizard in the trailers translates well into the movie itself. It would provide a nice counterpoint to the bombast of other action scenes shown in the trailer.
