...and what can we expect from DC's upcoming 'Legion of Superheroes' series this May?
The upcoming Legion of Superheroes title which will be written by former DC publisher Paul Levitz and hits stores this May will be taking a "group of young people into the far future," but we haven't heard a whole heck of a lot about the upcoming series and what we can expect. However, The Source revealed one of the awesome covers we will be seeing by penciler Yildiray Cinar and I have to admit that the image is pretty powerful. When was the last time you saw a Green Lantern ring in such a close proximity to anything yellow? Hmm...something to think about? The series writer Paul Levitz r evealed what the upcoming title is going to be all about.
The idea behind the Legion is that it's a group of young people in the far future, a thousand years from now, who are from different planets and with different powers, off saving the universe.
Well, they're young, but they're older than most of the teen teams. They're older, but in a society that presumes that you grow up a little more slowly. So just as we've added [the concept of] adolescence to the process of growing up in the last century, and we seem to be adding "odyssey," as some sociologists call it, to the process of growing up in the current generation, by the time you get to a thousand years [in the future], you're living quite a bit longer, and it's going to be a while before they treat you as a full grown-up. You may even be married and have kids, and they're still not entirely sure you're a full grown-up.
In this science fiction world you've got stuff going on with time travel; you've got interplanetary travel; you have all sorts of envisioned technology in the "Legion," some of which has become real, so we have to leap ahead and remodernize to go further and further forward. It's an incredibly rich and diverse world because we have all these alien planets and the people who come from them, so there's just wonderful weird stuff. Probably most importantly, historically, it's a book that permits change. Most [superhero] comics – I don't care whether they're ours or other publishers – have a real problem with change. Because if you're telling a piece of mythology – I don't care what kind of danger you put her in, you know you're not going to kill Lois Lane.
I am a bit hesitant about this book, to be honest, considering there are so many other DC team books being released. We have Didio's Outsiders, then the re-launch of Birds of Prey, then the Justice League and not to mention the Justice Society. Now we have Legion, yet another team book full of characters for us to get to know. I know a lot of you love team books, and while I personally I am not too crazy about them, the image above has left me a bit curious, and it's not just because Levitz seems so passionate about the book.
