Who is Agent Chase and Why is She a Threat To Batman?

The closer Agent Chase gets to Batwoman, the closer she will be to Batman.

Reading the current BATWOMAN by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman will leave the average reader questioning who Agent Cameron Chase really is and what her motivations are. Her role in the current BATWOMAN series has been so significant that it's hard not to wonder about her.

No Caption Provided

Chase, the D.E.O. detective that has been on Kate's trail since the launch of the series, recently got significantly closer to uncovering the identities of both Flamebird and Batwoman in the most recent issues of the title. If you don't read BATWOMAN, why should you care about Cameron Chase? Why does it matter that Chase has top-secret information about Batwoman and Flamebird? Because all roads lead down one path -- Batman. The final pages of BATWOMAN #5 -- the series' most recent issue -- reveal more than we could have expected about Chase's character, her motives and what she will risk (and who) to reach her goals.

Agent Chase can be summed up in a few words: determined, obsessed and; as Batman would say; a little xenophobic when it comes to costumed vigilantes. Prior to the character's appearance in BATWOMAN, Agent Chase first appeared in Batman #550 (January, 1998). The book; which was written by Doug Moench and penciled by both Kelley Jones and J.H. Williams III; depicted Chase on a search for a Claything -- until she runs into Batman. The two (reluctantly) work together since neither are willing to give up the goal, and it is in this first appearance that we see the dark side of Agent Chase. Her lack of sympathy and empathy for vigilantes, something that definitely resurfaces when she manipulates Flamebird in BATWOMAN #4.

No Caption Provided

Agent Chase's role in the current BATWOMAN series has involved working with the D.E.O -- the Department of Extranormal Operations. As of late, Chase's hunt for Batwoman have led her closer to uncovering the identity of Batwoman -- and this wouldn't be the first time her organization has asked her to uncover the secret identity of a superhero, either. Following her first appearance in Batman #550, Chase was given a brief self-titled mini-series where Curtis Johnson and J.H. Williams III were able to further explore Chase's character and what makes her tick. In the series' eighth issue, Chase was asked to uncover the identity of Batman -- yet when she is given the opportunity, she decides not too.

That Chase (above) is very different from the one that we have seen in the current BATWOMAN book who coerced Flamebird to give her Kate's name. The current incarnation of her character has no sympathy for vigilantes and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. She quite a different character than what she used to be. Aside from Chase's personality, something else is very different about her as well that we have yet to see addressed in the current BATWOMAN book. Based on her mini-series, Chase happens to have some "meta-human" powers of her own, and that's partly where her resentment towards metas comes from. The question is, with the relaunch of the "new 52," does Chase still have those powers? That remains to be seen.

Agent Chase has proven herself a formidable opponent for Kate Kane, and it doesn't help that she has some experience with Batman. But will the events that take place on the final pages of BATWOMAN #5 bring Chase one step closer to Bruce Wayne, too? Her vendetta against costume vigilantes isn't just personal -- it's business, after all. What do you think of Agent Chase? Would you want to see her with or without her powers? Have you been reading BATWOMAN?

Given that DC just printed the Chase trade, is she headed towards a miniseries in the future? I would be interested.

Agent Chase was created by D. Curtis Johnson and J. H. Williams III. Those two are awesome and should definitely work together some more.

Make it happen DC!

Chase is a very interesting character and I like the sinister take that Williams/Blackman are giving her in Batwoman. The status quo shift from last issue is going to be very interesting to see play out.

I like Agent Chase so it will be interesting to see how this happens. Sure would make for a different twist if they have her get hot on the trail of unveiling Batman, though I doubt it would actually happen. I'm definitely interested in this.

I've got to say, I've always hated character like that, they just rub me the wrong way. I understand the idea, that in the real world vigilantism is wrong, dangerous, and more than a little crazy, but to me it's always been kind of contradictory that the Justice League can be making a public appearance in one book, then in the next they're being hunted by the government. It makes no sense to me, people being fine with superhero has always been a basic implied part of comics to me.

I'm fine with this development though, so long as it doesn't cross over into my books, or throw Batman under the bus to make Cameron Chase look "badass." I hate that kind of stuff.

And this is just me, but I personally think that it would be hilarious if just once a character like this got all uppity at a superhero, only for them to be killed because it's a bad idea to annoy a god in feety pajamas/unstable zillionaire.

Stopped reading this series so I don't really care. Don't find Batwoman interesting at all and feel this revamp is trying too hard to give her the tragic past that has to be established so she can be in the Bat-family but overall its just not working and the series didn't start off right. They took this series on too much faith that readers knew about her already even though she had a lackluster appearance prior to Flashpoint and her series has done nothing to bring new readers onboard.

But I will say Agent Chase's attitude towards the whole thing is kind of funny given she works directly for a metahuman (maybe she's never met him) and though its a bit overused the ideological conflict between a member of a government agency or military and a vigilante is always an interesting one as long as the writing is good. Most of the time its just childish writing with the two sides giving nothing to the other but sometimes you get a writer that can handle the material maturely enough to not make the government agent out to be a bad guy because they are good guys simply playing by different rules.

Unfortunately I don't think Batwoman's writers will be able to rise to that level of maturity and intellectual discussion.

She probably will not. I love the book but one thing it has kept on doing was mocking Flamebird for some reason.

Wait, old DCU Chase thought Batman was Alan Scott?! Even though Alan Scott was running around in his Sentinel costume... not very bright.

I'm glad the editors of this post are giving Cameron Chase her chance in the spotlight. Her hatred for vigilantes stems of course from her father's death (Acrobat). She hates vigilantes because if her own father hadn't played hero then he wouldn't have gotten killed by Doctor Trapp. Also the reason why she probably hates her metahuman powers is because it wasn't enough to save her father. As I recall her powers are similar to Count Vertigo which instills a type of nausea. I also agree with Riddler in regards to Director Bones. Bones is the only skeletal character who has charisma. As for Cameron, I'm guessing the rough edges of her character will be buffed out when she is reminded of who she is. I'm hoping she will be like the Manhunter version of Cameron Chase. She may not like vigilantes but deep down inside she knows they serve a purpose for the better good.

If you get her addicted to drugs she would be Agent Donna Kiel from Daken... copycats...

But in all seriousness, she is an interesting character in the best new 52 book

Unfortunately I don't think Batwoman's writers will be able to rise to that level of maturity and intellectual discussion.

They're not trying to give her a tragic past so that she fits the bat family mold. If anything what makes her so great is that she's NOT a member of the bat family. Also, within the family line of books her occupies a unique, supernatural niche. And she's had one ever since Elegy. And Rucka's run on Detective with Batwoman was great and well received by both fans and critics. I'm one of those man new readers that Batwoman #1 bought in and I think the series started off great and has continued to be so. And Chase's issue isn't with Metahumans, that's more of a Pre-boot Max Lord thing. In fact she's actually a meta herself (remains to be seen in DCnU). Chase's issue is with vigilantes because her father being one is what caused his death. I think that William's/Blackmen can pull of what you've described as far as handling the government vs vigilantes angle. While their writing of Kate's not as good as Rucka's I've noticed a large amount of improvement from issue 1 to now and I can see that continuing to increase in the future. I think that's especially true now that Reeder's on art duties for the next arc, freeing up Williams to focus more on writing.

I got disappointed by the fact that it only took 5 issues to discover Batwoman's identity and to be honest, it was Flamebird's fault. But as soon as Flamebird gets back, Batwoman should kick the living crap out of her because thanks to her, her identity and her father's are compromised by not only Chase but Director Bones as well. And I can tell ya that Batman will NOT wait until the DEO is close to discover his identity so I see a Batman vs Batwoman fight soon .

I like Chase but she is more of a threat to Batwoman than she is Batman. Batman covers all his tracks and all his sidekicks are much better than Flamebird. I doubt she would be causing him any trouble unless Batwoman plays a huge role in it. Mr. Bones looks pretty promising

Great article! Chase is a cool character. She doesn't need powers. And heck yeah I read Batwoman! Anything and anyone that expands upon the DCU's spy, black ops, espionage world is a plus.

I was a little hesitant when I saw the story arch this series is taking, but I'm thrilled with how it's being handled and what appears to be why. A gay character and there's children being hurt? Worst stereotype ever. But that character saving the kids, and in a NON-CHEESY way? Awesome. Flamebird trying to be more than a bimbo-blonde just trying to get with Dick Grayson? Good for her! Yes, she's made some mistakes, but that's a part of character development and I love it. As for Chase? So excited to see what comes next. I think she's brilliant. I think this entire title is handled well. I know regardless of whether they give her powers or not (I think it can work either way), she will still be an intriguing character due to her drive and intellect. There are a lot of things I wouldn't trust other comic writers with, but I trust these writers because they have certainly proven themselves to me. I would love to see some crossover stuff with Batgirl, and wouldn't even mind seeing Batman's new villain and Chase team up. The dynamics between them would certainly be interesting, as they wouldn't agree on everything, and each has a different style. But if they worked together? Batman and the Bat-clan will certainly have a huge threat to face.

Did you know originally, Chase's father was a superhero, and when he died, she blamed it on his superhero escapades?
