Which Mutants Should Be in the X-Men: First Class Sequel?

There are a lot of unused muties from the early years. Which ones would fit in perfectly with the set up in the first film?

No Caption Provided

Here's one measure of a good superhero movie - - does it get you thinking about what you’d like to see in a sequel? In spite of my early reluctance to go over all the back stories, I thoroughly enjoyed FIRST CLASS and walked out of the theater thinking about what other mutants could fit into this new series' vision of the 60s. There's actually a wealth of material from the earliest years of the title that's been left pretty ripe for the picking. Let's look at some possibilities....

No Caption Provided

FACTOR THREE

I didn’t realize this until I looked back on the earliest X-MEN issues, but Factor Three was most likely folded into the FIRST CLASS vision of the Hellfire Club. They were a third party of mutant outlaws who tried to instigate a war between the US and USSR so they could establish mutantkind as a new global superpower - - does that sound a bit familiar? Though they were independent of the Brotherhood, there was a bit of crossover in their memberships. Led by the Mutant Master (who later turned out to be an alien,) their ranks included a mind-controlled Banshee, the tech whiz Ogre, the awfully-dressed shapeshifter Changeling (who was reconceived as Morph many years later,) the teleporting master criminal Vanisher, the force-field-fortified Unus the Untouchable and then Brotherhood familiars like Blob and Mastermind (who’ve already shown-up, in retooled forms, in WOLVERINE and X2 respectively.)

== TEASER ==

I read an interview with some of the screenwriters of FIRST CLASS where they admitted that seeing the Vanisher in the early comics inspired them to include Azazel in the movie. Debuting in X-MEN #2, the villain was the second foe the team ever fought and he introduced the concept of teleportation into their mythos years before Nightcrawler and decades before Azazel. He also happened to have one of the most garish costumes in all of comics, so I’m not going to fault anybody for opting to use a character with a cooler look and a potential back-story with Mystique instead. Although, oddly enough,you could actually construe Mystique’s involvement this early in the game as her subbing in for the Changeling, another super-villain with a uniquely ugly costume.

No Caption Provided

For as frequently as forcefields are used in the comics, no character’s really displayed that power yet in the movies. The ability is the sole ability of Unus the Untouchable, an arrogant Italian wrestler who immigrates to America to join forces with the Brotherhood and, later, Factor Three. He'd make an interesting addition to Magneto's nascent Brotherhood in any sequel - - although, truthfully, it might be more interesting to swap him with the similiarly-powered Armor.

THE MIMIC

The alternate reality counterpart’s from the Exiles has largely eclipsed the original, but Calvin Rankin's still a fascinating part of the X-Men’s early years. Not a mutant, but a science-enhanced human who had the ability to copy any mutant’s ability, this arrogant show-off expectantly stole the original team’s thunder by using all their powers at once. Interestingly, there was a rumor for a while that an actor had been cast in FIRST CLASS to play “Thomas,” a mutant with the ability to mimic other mutants’ abilities within range. Many figured that was Everett Thomas, otherwise known as Synch from Generation X, but the rumor proved to be unsubstantiated. Still, a mutant like the Mimic would certainly be a formidable threat to both Xavier and Magneto's teams -- maybe even a reason for them to ally together even years before the events of X2. Perhaps we saw enough power-stealing in WOLVERINE's vision of Deadpool, though.

MAGNETO’S CHILDREN

No Caption Provided

Though it would take years of revelations and retcons to clarify all the details, Magneto’s children have actually been a part of the X-Men’s business since their earliest years. Super-speedster Quicksilver and chance-manipulator Scarlet Witch were members of the first iteration of the Brotherhood, while the mistress of magnetism, Polaris, joined the X-Men almost immediately upon meeting them. Out of these three, Quicksilver's the only one to have appeared in the movies so far with a very brief cameo as an imprisoned youth in WOLVERINE. The young Magneto in FIRST CLASS is a suave globetrotter and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had dalliances during his various travels that produced children. They'd have to be very young teens at the oldest, though.

There are, of course, plenty of other mutants that could be fit into FIRST CLASS' new time-line. Sunfire, Mesmero, Thunderbird and then Sway, Petra and Vulcan, the other members of MacTaggert's back-up team which Darwin was also part of in DEADLY GENESIS. Which ones make the most sense to you maniacs? Who would you want to see appear in FIRST CLASS follow-up?

I wouldn't mind seeing Petra, Dazzler, Jubilee or Cannonball in the sequel. I would suggest one of the first three, as the team in First Class lack females ultimately.

Polaris seems like a natural choice, considering Havok is already there. I would love to see Warpath, but would rather they just skip Thunderbird all together-- pretty useless character. I wouldn't mind seeing Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but I think it would be difficult to incorporate them considering Magneto's age in these films.

Would like to see them reveal that Darwin survived by turning himself into a single cell organism that survives the energy blast, and re-evolving into human form. He was underused in the film. Also, although it would be hard to justify it given when these prequels are set, but I would really like to see Armor at some point down the line.

I would like to see Mimic, but I suspect he would just be Darwin 2.0.  But the first Darwin wasn't very well handled in First Class, so I largely want them to leave Mimic be.  While I didn't like the movie that much, it's worthy of a sequel.  Fox has to keep making X-films to keep the rights and I'd be more interested in continuing the development of Singer's universe (broadly speaking) than a reboot that could be just as inane.   As for a sequel... I think it's obvious they will keep these four (if you've seen the film, you know why).

Professor X:  Obviously.
Beast:  Not much was made of his transformation in FC, so he should try to cope in a sequel.  It'd be nice to see him become the public face of the X-Men (maybe being introduced to Trish Tilby).
Banshee: He was fairly bland, so I would be happy is he was left out.  His flying was fairly well done, though so I'd probably like to see him developed further.
Havok:  Same as Banshee, minus the flying.  I wish they would drop him entirely, honestly.

As for new characters, I would like to see...
Morph:  Mostly based on the X-Men animate series version.  It'd be nice to see a shapeshifter with a sense of humor.  It would be a nice contrast to Mystique, who will probably be in the movie, as well.  I'm not sure who'd be his straight man, maybe Beast or Thunderbird.
Thunderbird:  Could be pretty freaking awesome.  We've still never seen a full-on physical powerhouse in the X-Men movies.  If memory serves neither Colossus, Blob, nor Juggernaut even lifted something as big as a car.
Dazzler:  The disco dazzler would actually fit in if the movie was set in the early 70's.  Also combine her and Banshee's powers for interesting results.
Chamber:  One of my favorites, and could be an interesting character.

I say less mutants and not more. I am not interested in the first film, let alone a sequel.  Just the idea of a sequel tells me that I'm never going to get an actual Emma in these movies. Only this psuedo version of her character, posing like something out of Greg Land's work.

This was the problem with the other X-Men movies. They overflowed them with characters. Either out of pandering fan service, or just so FOX could cling to the rights to use those characters. It over complicates the movies and they turn into a mess.

As much as I really REALLY loved the First Class movie... why does there need to be a sequel? Aren't we just going to tell the same stories already told? Humanity's own prejudice, mutants struggling to be accepted and accepting themselves? Obvious parables to both racism and adolescent isolation? Because that's kinda the whole point of X-Men (something even the comics have forgotten about). Not dumb superhero crap, lasers shooting everywhere, every character having their dumb gimmick so they can beat up another villain who is of course more powerful than the LAST one they just fought, who was more powerful than the one before that, and the one before that.

Unless you have the thematic underpinnings to carry the film (which First Class did), what's to keep it from just being a special-effects driven cameo-fest for comic nerds, as opposed to a meaningful, character-driven movie?

I say Polaris would be good to introduce in and mingle with Havok...  Multiple Man would be nice too, Jaime, Alex, Lorna, and Sean worked together as Muir Island X-Men i believe...  i know they teamed up a couple of times against Arcade(?), I think Iceman was part of that too, but not sure.

 I'm all for Mimic, no one is a bigger Mimic fan than me but I really would love to see Factor 3 as well. However, if there are a small group I would enjoy, give me Cecilia Reyes, Marrow and Random.

I second that.

But I would rather see the Shadow King instead of Sinister, that way you can easily introduce both Jean Grey and Storm and make it plausible. But Also I want to see Sunfire- have him take on the roll that Namor did in the early years of the X-Men books. A Mutant torn between hero and villain.

I'd prefer NOT to see Banshee and  Havok in the sequel - I didn't like them. Andthe Beast's looks must be improved (he looks horrible in comparison with Beast from Last Stand).
Naturally, I'd like to see Magneto and his Brotherhood, but without Angel (they coud add Sabertooth from X-Men Origins: Wolverine instead).

Keep Beast and Havok, have Banshee "leave"- thus the Factor Three tie-in, Bring in Polaris, Cyclops, and Storm/Psylocke( She's older than Jean anyways right? In XO:Wolverine Cyclops was about 17? and im sure that wasn't that long before Professor and Mags went to go get Jean and she was like 12-14, so it makes Cyclops a freak haha) And For the early Brotherhood, Mags ofcourse, bring along Toad, Mystique, Avalanche and hint at Destiny <3. Best Sequel EVER...sort of.

Well, Darwin should come back, I read that he can turn into pure energy, so he's definitely not dead. The man can adapt to anything, it's waaaaay to good of a power to waste on 1/6 of the movie. You might agree if you see this...

@King Quisling: I saw Storm and Cyclops, but I was talking about them joining the team. And I didn't see anyone that really looked like Jean. Especially since she's supposed to be a little girl after Charles loses his hair, according to X-MEN: THE LAST STAND.

Wanting to introduce more than 3 new characters would make turn this movie into another X3. In interviews Vaughn has said he has plans on keeping the cast he had on the first and adding one new character. Now, what I take from that is that he plans on doing what Singer did in X2. He brought in fan favorite Nightcrawler as the 'new character'. That doesn't mean he wont throw in some more cameos or smaller roles. I just wouldn't expect more than 2 possibly 3 new characters.

I thought I was original when I was thinking the introduction of Lorna would be great to expand with Havok's character, but apparently we all think on the same level. lol. I doubt Vaughn plans on bringing in Polaris, but we can dream.

I believe I read somewhere that Vaughn also said how the one character he brought in would be able to go toe-to-toe with Magneto, now that Xavier will be dealing with some issues from the end of the last film. From his crypticness I can't tell if he means another villain or someone Xavier recruits, or an anitvillain...idk. I just hope Magneto isn't tossed straight into the villain role.

So two characters I could get behind joining the cast would be: Polaris and Destiny (toward the end of the film briefly leading into a third movie).

It really makes me happy that Vaughan only wants to bring in one new character for the sequel, the whole throw in as many characters as possible mentality of the original movies just made the characters meaningless and bland. It sounds like he wants to add a new villain, which would be nice.  So I just want to see Mr. Sinister......or Gorgeous George.

I'm not sure how they might put it together, but I want a movie that potentially incorporates. Maybe not all of it, but atleast some of it. :

  •  Cable and his team the Six Pack as a type of paramilitary special forces unit in Vietnam and abroad.
  • Resurrection of Darwin who turns into energy and is currently possessing Bishop who is now a member of the Six Pack. Bishop would replace Deadpool in the Six Pack. His energy absorption power would allow him to absorb Darwin, but this makes Bishop ill .Bishop and Cable goto Xavier to get him to separate Bishop and Darwin. Bishop substitutes Vulcan also as temp vessel for Darwin.
  • Subtle suggestions of separate time travel events provided by Bishop and Cable, but nothing over the top. All we really know is both exist in this time period and work together.
  • Stryfe and the Legacy Virus as a allegorical substitute for aids.
  •  Illyana Rasputin whose part of X-men, but also among several mutants who gets infected with Legacy Virus.
  • Minor side story about Jason Stryker at the mansion and his relationship with William Stryker.
  • Fox's X-Men version of what happened with Apollo 13. Perhaps something with Magneto.
  • Trish Tilby as a hippie activist protesting for mutant rights and against Vietnam. With relationship with Beast who becomes political.
  • Maybe Genosha and slavery of mutants. We could call it "mutant trafficking".
  • Forge cameo   to explain the technological advances made in the mansion.
  • Perhaps a brief news report that tells us how the rest of the world has adapted their own mutant supersoldier programs in the wake of what occurred in Cuba. We'd see glimpses of a group of Russian government sanctioned mutant team in USSR w/ cameo of Omega Red in group, Canadian Alpha Flight , and the U.S.'s X-Factor, maybe. Maybe in intelligence report. They probably wouldn't play a big role in movie though.

@weaponmaster said:

Darwin. For the entire movie.

Amen to that brother!

@bingbangboom said:

 I saw the movie and while enjoyable as an X-Men fan I just want them to reboot everything.

I totally agree  I also just want the movie rights to revert back to Marvel; but I don't think that's likely.

@SpidermanWins said:

.  In the brotherhood Mistique gets with Azazel and end with her giving birth to Nightcrawler,

I really like your idea.

@goldenkey said:

... I think it could be great to see the 2nd team come in and do another time piece only in the 70's…

I think that's what everyone was thinking.

@PrinceIMC said:

They need to bring back Darwin.....  Then in the end Legion can show up from the future trying to kill Magneto but accidentally killing Xavier so the third movie can be an Age of Apocalypse movie.

I was also thinking this.

@xmenboi11: Yeah I hope maybe Magneto will reunite will Xavier to train students like he did with the New Mutants but there would have to be good reasoning behind. Maybe some sort of mutual enemy. Maybe Sentinels or Graydon Creed or Mr.Sinister could play some role. We know from Singers own words that the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War and the JFK assassination are all things we wants to incorporate into it a First Class sequel. Which should be interest but Mutant Rights will be another subject Erik and Charles don't see eye to eye on. So we can only assume if they do reunite it won't be for some time. I'm still curious as to how will they explain Charles walking in X3 and Wolverine. Hopefully it makes sense. Possibly the use of a healer mutant. Although it would on be inevitable for him to lose use of his legs again.

@King Quisling:   But i don't think it's prudent to reunite Xavier and Magneto so soon after this movie. I think it's more appropriate to see them in their more traditional roles as adversaries with conflicting philosophies. I just keep imagining Magneto attacking the rocket a Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the X-Men trying to protect the rocket.  I think it'd be wrong to make a movie about the 70's and not say something about the space program of that period.

But if they did reunite to fight the release of the Legacy Virus. In the comics, Stryfe, Cable's clone. From the Marvel's "Legacy Virus"  Wikia...

The Legacy Virus was based on a virus created by  Apocalypse  in the distant future, which was intended to kill the remaining non-mutants. ....the virus had not been perfected, and much like Legacy-3, it targeted all humans indiscriminately. As a result, this virus was never deployed, until Stryfe acquired it and altered it for his own purposes....    .... Stryfe's "legacy" to the world.

@xybernauts: True. I honestly would never want to see Stryfe or Apocalypse in a X-Men film. Cloning was killed by Attack of the Clones and what's the point of Stryfe without Cable, Sinister or ridiculous amounts of time travel? Singer seems to want to take the real world and add mutants to it as realistically and plausibly as possible. So I highly doubt time travel or alternate U's will ever been used. I can see some play on the Legacy virus and possible the X-Men Evolution version of Apocalypse in the franchise, without a doubt. Will we ever see a techno-organic Apocalypse? Highly doubtful. Honestly, since Singer says he wants to only introduce one new mutant for a First Class sequel & that said mutant will be able to go toe-to-toe with Magneto, I hope we get a chance to see Lorna Dane on screen. I'm really hoping for her or, since it's been establish that Charles taught him for a while, I would really enjoy seeing a teenage Jason Stryker/Mastermind. I think it would be interesting to see Lorna/Polaris go from the Brotherhood to the X-Men on screen and/or seeing Jason/Mastermind do the opposite. Also with a young Mastermind the First Class series could actually show what push William Stryker to deep freeze his son and experiment on him & the rest of his capture mutants. I know it's been mentioned, with the whole "took a drill to her head" statements in X2 and the nods to that in Wolverine, but seeing something like that in a X-Men movie would be absolutely gruesome. Give us a show as to why mutants can be viewed as a threat. Maybe I would save this all for a First Class 3 but I think Mastermind definitely deserves some speaking time. I would even approve more if he's a absolutely likable/lovable character who's powers/hatred/teenage angst just consumes him & turns him into a fear mongering monster of a mutant.

@King Quisling: I really want to see  Jason Stryker also.

Of course Cable would be in a movie with Strfye, but I totally agree that things like time travel and cloning would be out of place in Fox's X-Men movie, but at the same time I think it's possible to show Cable and Stryfe without actually talking about time travel or cloning. All we'd see is the two characters Stryfe and Cable and their role in that time period; although I'd imagine the characters would look alike. While the time travel and cloning might be subtly implied, it wouldn't be a major plot device.

@xybernauts: Oh yeah definitely know what you mean. I think Cable would be a good addition to say X4 or X5. I don't think he would be Cyclops' son but they would find some suitable origin. After Wolverine I always thought it would be kinda cool if Cable was one of Strykers experiments pushed to omega level via torture. Also ALWAYS thought he should be played by Kurt Russel.
