What's the Best Crossover Of All Time?

The Czar of the Crossovers - - YOU decide!

The Justice Legion had cool suits, too.
The Justice Legion had cool suits, too.

When I let you all know about THE AVENGERS & THE INFINITY GAUNTLET mini-series a while back, it got me thinking about which crossovers have held up over the years. It’s certainly topical, right now, isn't it? Marvel fans are seeing the end of a series of seven straight mega-crossovers with SIEGE.

I think that, at their best, crossovers link superheroes to their roots in mythology. They capture feeling of something like THE ILLIAD - - an epic fray with an entire pantheon of larger-than-life players.   In that respect, I’ll reiterate that I think THE INFINITY GAUNTLET fulfills that the best of any crossover I’ve read. Thanos returning from the dead, collecting all the Infinity Gems and subsequently using the power of the Infinity Gauntlet to snuff out half the universe (with just a snap of his fingers) and single-handedly fight the other half in a frustrated effort to win Lady Death’s love…? That’s DEFINITELY like something out of an epic myth.

I'm never going to get over this storyline, am I?
I'm never going to get over this storyline, am I?

Of course, the other criterion for a good crossover is that it needs a conceit that’s fun and natural for all the other company titles to tie in to (it shouldn’t feel intrusive or forced). I’d definitely rank DC ONE MILLION as the best in that respect. The first crossover masterminded by Grant Morrison (with plenty of gonzo ideas to match), the story saw the JLA encounter their future incarnation - - the Justice Legion Alpha, who hailed from the 853 century. While the central mini-series itself was really good (with some excellent art by Val Semeiks), what really makes this stand out is how fun the tie-ins were. Every title got a “millionth issue” where creative team got to put forth a vision of what their title would be like in the far, far future, and the results ran the gamut.

Other favorites of mine are AGE OF APOCALYPSE, IDENTITY CRISIS and MAXIMUM SECURITY. I’d get into detail why, but as the Rock would say... it doesn’t matter what I think!!! What matter is what you maniacs in the Comic Vine community think!  I want to hear what your favorites are! CIVIL WAR. FINAL CRISIS. CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS. ZERO HOUR. ONSLAUGHT… how do they hold up? Which one’s the best? Which one’s the worst? What were some especially good tie-ins! Let’s make this our own community wide crossover of opinions. Enter the fray!

Terminator vs Robocop was outstanding. Miller and Simonson wove the two worlds together seamlessly.

It wasn't a huge crossover, but a crossover nonetheless, Emperor Joker.

Also Last Laugh.

You're probably sensing a theme here.

I gotta say for DC Blackest Night it was awesome seeing characters who have been dead since Infinite Earths come back as Black Lanterns

And For Marvel Civil War cause well I'm a Political Science student and the whole Security Vs Freedom thing was kinda cool to see put into a comic book

Thank God the big 2 know what they are doing with the events these days.  In the early 90's we suffered through Atlantis Attacks, Terminus Factor, Evolutionary War, Zero Hour, and I think you catch my drift.  The event books today line up nicely with their affiliated titles ( a la Siege and Avengers), and you can buy the ancillary books or not without missing much.

Infinity Gauntlet for me, first comic series handed down to me and I loved. AoA was good, and Second Coming is enjoyable so far. I also hope to add Shadowland to my list too.

With so many crossovers happening in recent history I feel like we need to separate this into two groups, pre 2000 and post 2000 (since that was when the crossovers started occurring once or twice a year).  Pre 2000 Infinity Gauntlet is close, very close, but I have to go with Crisis of Infinite Earths, it was the first crossover to really truly "Change everything forever."

As for post 2000 I have to say Civil War (with Blackest Night being close) simply because it showed how the changes in the real world can have effects on the comic world and really did provide the largest super hero fight we've ever seen.

Man I have so many Crossovers in my head that where easily the Best But too bad I have to call out just a few.Lets begin With "CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS".... easily on of the Best of all time.Just the indebt story telling and the demis of Barry Allen,Dove, and Super-girl and several others where very sad and the introduction of the Earth-1 world with Ultraman, powering,Owlman, and Superwomen.

AoA...do I have to say more?

Civil war....Just the Strugle between Friends on oposite side of Justice. The Ending really Hit me there....you know in my chest just like Rogers.

Marvel vs Dc / Amalgam....Man reading this made me jizz my pants...okay mybe not but I swear I thought I was high reading this.Awesome Crossover.

Blackest night....So many Death over the years and Heroes and villains that we thought we will never see again,Man was I wrong.BN was on of my All time favs of all time (maybe intill Brightest day) Heroes and Villains alike joining forces to deffeat the re-animated bodyes of fallen heroes and villains was just an epic concept (I LOVE YOU GEOFF JOHN) well back to what I was saying...Just seeing some of the Old school Characters from back in the days were amazing. My dad always talked about this Heroes and seeing them zombified brought great joy to my heart lol XD.
P.S. Seeing Air wave again was awesome.

I'm going with two:

1. "THE UNCANNY X-MEN AND THE NEW TEEN TITANS"

Now I was not even 1 year old when this was released but as I got to be around 15, around Age of Apocalypse, I had a discussion with a local retailer about crossovers.  This book was the first one he mentioned and told me that I was missing out.  With CHRIS CLAREMONT'S Uncanny squad, art by WALT SIMONSON and TERRY AUSTIN...yeah, if you've never read this, you got issues(no pun intended).

2. OUR WORLDS AT WAR

SUPERMAN had to stop IMPERIEX and his WARWORLD, so he dove into the sun and got a power boost.  With help from peeps like STEEL, MARTIAN MANHUNTER, and even LEX LUTHOR, Supes threw Imperiex and Warworld -- along with BRAINIAC 13-- into a boom tube and sent their conciousess both back millions of years to the beginning of time.

AoA was good for it's time.  The concept of a World without Professor X is excellent but in  the end it was only a What If.

I'm probably the only person who will name this but I liked House of M.  What it did to certain characters even after it was all over hasn't been seen too often.  Spider-Man got to see what life would've been like if Gwen hadn't died and became depressed when he was stripped of that.  That's just one of many issues that were touched upon.  In a Matrix like fashion, everybody pooled together to bring the real world back even though they were "happier" in this one.  Loved it!

Good article!
huge fan of crossovers. big fan of x-men so i have dug the majority of their crossovers. other then the classics, the most recent crossover "favs" of mine have been: Messiah complex, Civil War, was loving Secret Invation till the ending. (I just think marvel pussyed out at the end, they had a chance to kill off so many characters and instead they killed one and brought back like 3 ha ha) I'm also really enjoying Siege right now. the end of dark reign....sorry just wiping away a tear.

There are a lot of good cross overs.  I would think Age of Apocalypse would win best cross over, but Blackest Night might be getting some votes because of the suspense of seeing dead hero's coming back as Black Lanterns.  I was let down with it because it I thought they would act more like Green Lanterns by using constructs with thier rings, and they didn't.  The thought of Earth 2 superman forging a fist with his ring was (how could they beat this guy).  I personally liked X-cutioner Song.  It was a cross over that answered A LOT of questions and also had a villian stepping forward and being way more powerful then he was percieved for year or 2 before was pretty fresh.  Like he was being held back.  There was also a ton of action.  A great list of favorite villians like Mr Sinister, and Apacalypse being used well, and the connection being answered.  Jae Lee's art was made mainstream and a lot of people like he rendition of Arch-Angel, and the illistrations of his fight between Wolverine, Bishop (who was one of the hottest characters at the time), and Cable.  Also the three way fight between X-Force, X-factor, and some of the X-Men was classic.  I don't know anyone at the time that wasn't having a whole of fun with this cross over.  The only draw back was the it took place right after Claremont, Jim Lee, and Whilce Portacio left the books.  Claremont and Lee wrote the stories but didn't get credit for them, and we didn't get the usual art we wer so used to seeing on these books so it took away from them a little, but fanboys being fanboys, you know they were pissed off.  Thankfully the story held up.

One of Marvel's best crossovers if not the best was the Mutant Massacre which started it all for big crossovers there in the Marvel Universe.  Without a doubt DC's best crossover was Crisis on Infinite Earths which redefined the DC universe for the last 20 years or more.  The modern crossovers seem good and all, but you can't beat the original and groundbreaking crossovers that occured back in the mid to late 80's.

Civil War, Annihilation, Infinite Crisis and Infinity Gauntlet. Can't go wrong with those

Civil War rocked
Final Crisis was awesome, but not as good as Infinite Crisis.
I haven't read Contest of Champions, but I heard it was okay.
Zero Hour sucked.
Onslaught was okay until Heroes Reborn. (I would like to say I loved Captain America's "A" symbol being replaced by an eagle. The actual Navy insignia for captain.)

In this order

Infinity Guantlet/war/crusade is by far #1 with everything else not even close

Secret Wars
Maximum Carnage (does that count? there were like 3 diff Spider books involved)
Sinestro Corps War
Annihilation & conquest
Death of Superman (this had 3 diff Supes books)
Crisis on Infinite
AoA
Civil War
WWH
War of Kings
X-cutioner's Song
Blackest Night
Inferno

If Second Coming is gonna keep up the way its going... It might grab that 3 or 4 spot easily!

Agreed.   Superheroes are our modern Greek gods.   Their core identity is perpetual and it's why some things will never change (Spidey's double-life conflicts and his singlehood).

It also makes sense as to why Deadpool has become a big part of Marvel's pantheon; he's the archetypal trickster.

I might have to say that Civil War is a great one. The psychologies of the characters are really on full display here. I honestly did not like the hero v hero (I'm kind of a traditionalist), nevertheless it was brilliantly executed. It redefined many characters, brought to the surface many more, and defintely defined a generation of heroes.
P.S.
Pinchuk, I am ecstatic to hear someone talk about the parallels of superheroes to antiquity. A lot of really great comics harken back to great classical literature and myth and very few people who read comics are able enough to make those comparisons. Knowing things like that definitely make the comics infintely more enjoyable, I'd say. kudos.

Infinity Gauntlet by FAR my favorite.  I haven't read Crisis on Infinite Earths yet (before my time), I checked out the art a while back and it's George Perez soooo DAYYYUM.

But Yeah I REALLLY loved Final Crisis too, and from what i've read of Seven Soldiers, thats AWESOME.

For some strange Reason I really liked INVASION, from DC back in the 1980's, and Cosmic Odyssey, In which the art and coloring is JUST TO DIE FOR (Mike Mignola).

That said Marvel kinda Meh's,  The 1990's cross overs we largely forgotten in current continuity.  I dont even want to mention Liefeld's Heroes Reborn Cap, oopppps i did.
