What's the Best Crossover Of All Time?

The Czar of the Crossovers - - YOU decide!

The Justice Legion had cool suits, too.

When I let you all know about THE AVENGERS & THE INFINITY GAUNTLET mini-series a while back, it got me thinking about which crossovers have held up over the years. It’s certainly topical, right now, isn't it? Marvel fans are seeing the end of a series of seven straight mega-crossovers with SIEGE.

I think that, at their best, crossovers link superheroes to their roots in mythology. They capture feeling of something like THE ILLIAD - - an epic fray with an entire pantheon of larger-than-life players.   In that respect, I’ll reiterate that I think THE INFINITY GAUNTLET fulfills that the best of any crossover I’ve read. Thanos returning from the dead, collecting all the Infinity Gems and subsequently using the power of the Infinity Gauntlet to snuff out half the universe (with just a snap of his fingers) and single-handedly fight the other half in a frustrated effort to win Lady Death’s love…? That’s DEFINITELY like something out of an epic myth.

I'm never going to get over this storyline, am I?

Of course, the other criterion for a good crossover is that it needs a conceit that’s fun and natural for all the other company titles to tie in to (it shouldn’t feel intrusive or forced). I’d definitely rank DC ONE MILLION as the best in that respect. The first crossover masterminded by Grant Morrison (with plenty of gonzo ideas to match), the story saw the JLA encounter their future incarnation - - the Justice Legion Alpha, who hailed from the 853 century. While the central mini-series itself was really good (with some excellent art by Val Semeiks), what really makes this stand out is how fun the tie-ins were. Every title got a “millionth issue” where creative team got to put forth a vision of what their title would be like in the far, far future, and the results ran the gamut.

Other favorites of mine are AGE OF APOCALYPSE, IDENTITY CRISIS and MAXIMUM SECURITY. I’d get into detail why, but as the Rock would say... it doesn’t matter what I think!!! What matter is what you maniacs in the Comic Vine community think!  I want to hear what your favorites are! CIVIL WAR. FINAL CRISIS. CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS. ZERO HOUR. ONSLAUGHT… how do they hold up? Which one’s the best? Which one’s the worst? What were some especially good tie-ins! Let’s make this our own community wide crossover of opinions. Enter the fray!

AoA certainly comes to my mind. It was so great for me at the time. I also enjoyed Secret Wars a lot. =)

i really love siege but blackest night is best..although brightest day is shaping up to be amazing
Posted by -Vigil-

Easily Civil War. Sins of Youth was a lot of fun too.

Posted by PrinceIMC

Age of Apocalypse was one of the things that really got me into comics. I just didn't have a job to afford them all yet.

Going back and getting the Secret Wars trade was great. It had Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, X-Men all working together against the greatest assemblage of villains ever. And oh yeah Magneto was grouped with the heroes.

JLA/Avengers was also great. Getting to see Marvel's mightiest slug it out with DC's greatest was just awesome.

does the messiah trilogy count? If not second coming is sweet so far
Posted by Falco974

Crisis on infinite earths and JLA / Avengers!!

Posted by uncanny89

Second coming is shaping up to be one of the better crossovers that marvel has done.  Its just building up with every issue.

Posted by Neverpraying

I think the Spawn and Batman crossover was pretty cool.

Posted by heroic_warrior76

Marvel Superheroes: Secret Wars for me is the Best Crossover ever.

Posted by eldestrisk

Second Coming is truly becoming an epic crossover. The type future generations will look back and think, damn why things aren't as good now.

CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS is one of the best.
It features more characters than DC even had!  They had to go get some from other companies,
Posted by leokearon

AOA and JLA/Avengers would be my favourite crossovers
Posted by Dajjal

AoA will always have a place in my heart.

Posted by Aspenite

I really loved Civil War.

Posted by Meteorite

Age of Apocalypse. Really, it's a great idea.

Posted by Chane

Zero Hour was my first and still my favourite

Posted by elevatorparty

Civil war.
JLA/Avengers.
Messiah CompleX.

But i have to say, I just read the Infinite Crisis trade and hated it.

AoA, Sinestro Corps War, and Annihilation, even though I'm pushing it, since it is not really a crossover event.

I would say Marvel vs Dc / Amalgam! I just love how much fantasy they used in creating the Amalgam characters. And the fight of the powerhouses of both companies was a nice bonus.
Otherwise I would say Age of Apocalypse. Again because of the inventive use of so many characters.

Age of Apocalypse.  Although I hold a special place for the X-Tinction Agenda since it was one of the first stories I read... there's just no beating the original Age of Apocalypse.  Pure genius.

Very good call, all were top notch and very well done.  They did crossover into other titles, so yeah, i'd call them all events and crossovers.  At first, I thought he meant intercompany crossovers lol

World War Hulk got me into comics, so I'll always have a soft spot for that crossover

You know I was glad you mentioned Contest of Champions...the 1st one. Admittedly I preferred Secret Wars, but were it not for Champions there would be no Wars. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

secret wars and secret invasion

Posted by IronSpidy-Rooney

Infinite crisis was my favorite it was the first DC book I'v ever read but that all changed when I read Identity crisis
My other favorites have to be Civil War, Zero hour, Sinestro corp war, House of M was a favorite too

Posted by IronSpidy-Rooney

Which is better though AOA or Onslaught

Posted by Whiplash

To me, Civil War and Secret Invasion had so many great elements in both. Civil War, you had heroes struggling against heroes with Villains being captured and used against heroes BY other heroes, which was something new. The thing that I loved about Secret Invasion was that you had no idea who you could trust, anytime someone was in a panel, you were instantly wondering if they were a skrull or the real deal. As for old school, I loved Contest of Champions 1 and Age of Apocolypse.

Secret Wars being my first it's got everything you could ever want, a being from another universe, all your favorite heroes and villians and a forty foot Doom.

AoA.  Onslaught wasn't bad, just didn't end great.  Started of o.k. then lost it's footing when it ended in the next lead in to that Heroe's Reborn........whatever you wanna call it.

FInal Crisis was the worst crossover I've ever read, Grant Morrison just did not juggle everything and his characterization was horrible as a result. On the other hand, I loved Identity Crisis, which I find to be one of the best crossovers DC has done (Although it has it's flaws too). Messiah CompleX was also very well done so that looks to hold up well hopefully.

I guess you're using the term "crossover" in a very broad sense here.

When I think of crossovers I think of Messiah Complex, Second Coming, and Sinestro Corps War events where the bulk of the story is covered in a number or existing titles as apposed to Siege, Blackest Night, Civil War (and others) which has a main book and varying amounts of tie-ins.

But if i had to pick my favorite event so far it would have to be Civil War. It was and still is the best event I've read so far.

I going with:
1. Age of Apocalypse
2. Secret War (the first one)
3. Blackest Night

Posted by ManuelPrez
The only two I remember
  • Blackest night
  • Ultimatum
Posted by gui22

Secret wars. The first(I think) of marvel crossovers and,n my opinion, the best of them all.But i loved civil war.So it´s a tie.

Posted by warlock360

Infinity Wars and everything to it.

Posted by waruikumo

Infinity Gauntlet by FAR my favorite.  I haven't read Crisis on Infinite Earths yet (before my time), I checked out the art a while back and it's George Perez soooo DAYYYUM.

But Yeah I REALLLY loved Final Crisis too, and from what i've read of Seven Soldiers, thats AWESOME.

For some strange Reason I really liked INVASION, from DC back in the 1980's, and Cosmic Odyssey, In which the art and coloring is JUST TO DIE FOR (Mike Mignola).

That said Marvel kinda Meh's,  The 1990's cross overs we largely forgotten in current continuity.  I dont even want to mention Liefeld's Heroes Reborn Cap, oopppps i did.

i know this wasn't a huge crossover, but my all time favorite is inferno.
i was 15 when that story came out and i just thought is was the best.

Posted by Scoobypuff

personally i really enjoyed crisis on ifintie earths for a dc crossover. for a marvel crossover i'd say maximum carnage was a great read for me as a kid.

I loved Ultimatum 'couse was even more of a Slaughter house than the 7th book of Harry Potter...

But my favourite Mega Event until now is World War Hulk...

Posted by Son_of_Magnus

Grant Morrison's crossovers were pretty hardcore

Posted by Dek7264

Messiah CompleX was the crossover that got me into comics in the first place. The culmination of those events in Second Coming have been great so far as well.
Posted by Namor1987

Well the one that I've actually read would have Messiah War &/or Necrosha but I also liked Spider-Man's Identity Crisis from the  90s & his  Kaine story those were pimp

I might have to say that Civil War is a great one. The psychologies of the characters are really on full display here. I honestly did not like the hero v hero (I'm kind of a traditionalist), nevertheless it was brilliantly executed. It redefined many characters, brought to the surface many more, and defintely defined a generation of heroes.
P.S.
Pinchuk, I am ecstatic to hear someone talk about the parallels of superheroes to antiquity. A lot of really great comics harken back to great classical literature and myth and very few people who read comics are able enough to make those comparisons. Knowing things like that definitely make the comics infintely more enjoyable, I'd say. kudos.

Ive loved every crossover ive ever read... minus siege. LOL

Posted by goatman2112

one of the few who liked Infinite Crisis

Posted by dondasch

The Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Wars, Age of Apocalypse, Blackest Night.  Of all those I'd have to say that my all time favorite is Infinity Gauntlet.  I simply loved the concept of Thanos practically giving a dowry of half the life EVERYWHERE to his "love".

I have read every single post and finally someone with a half a brain!!! The Infinity Gauntlet was by far the beast crossover in comics!!!
Posted by karrob

I loved The Infinity War

Edited by Soldier zero

My vote is for JLA/Avengers, the only comapny crossover that ever considered hwo different the narrative foundations of the universes really are.

Still I also enjoyed Blackest Night a lot.
