What's Next after 'The Dark Knight Rises'?

You've seen the movie by now. What should happen after this film? (Spoilers).

It sounds like pretty much everyone loved The Dark Knight Rises. As the final act in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, it had a definitive ending and many felt it was what the franchise deserved. But obviously this isn't the actual end of the franchise. Batman will rise once again. The question is, what happens after this film?

No Caption Provided

The story is over and Nolan has stated he is finished with the franchise. Here's some quick thoughts where the franchise could go.

There will be spoilers so hopefully you've done your duty as a Bat-fan and have already seen it at least once.

== TEASER ==

Catwoman Spin-off

No Caption Provided

Many felt Anne Hathaway was a poor choice to be cast as Catwoman (or we should say Selina Kyle). Her performance and the way Selina was written worked better everyone expected. She carried herself perfectly and showed she was more than capable of kicking ass alongside Batman.

Christopher Nolan was impressed with Hathaway's performance and mentioned the following to Access Hollywood.

Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s just a delight to watch her perform. [Selina's] She’s an incredible character and we’re very excited to see her and hopefully we’ll leave people wanting more.

What are the chances of this? Not too likely it seems.

Hathaway did tell Digital Spy that should would love to do one if Nolan was involved. Since Nolan said he's finished with Batman, his involvement wouldn't be likely. Also, do people still have a bad taste in their mouths from the last Catwoman movie?

John Blake/Batman/Robin Spin-off

No Caption Provided

Joseph Gordon Levitt was one of my favorite parts of the movie. He provided the inspiration that Bruce needed to bring himself back to his destiny. With his knowledge of Batman's identity, the name Robin thrown about and the way the movie ended, Blake draws some inspiration from Tim Drake. A movie could pick up after the events of this movie featuring his continuation over the protection of Gotham City.

One of the points that was odd was the fact that in those eight years that Batman was in retirement, no other major villain stepped up to try to claim Gotham for themselves. Despite Batman's sacrifice, you would think someone would try to claim the city believing that he was, in fact, dead.

Would this work? Again, without Nolan, it'd be hard to accept. Blake was a great character but the thought of someone else stepping into this version of Gotham to direct would be difficult.

Start All Over Again

No Caption Provided

Unfortunately it seems that rebooting the franchise is the only thing to do. I've mentioned several times that I would like comic book movies to take the James Bond route and simply recast the character rather than restart and retell the origin.

More likely the next time we'll see Batman on the big screen is if and when the Justice League live-action movie is released. Even though this last film showed that Batman could partner with others (Blake and Kyle), having other costumed superheroes just wouldn't work. We'll have to see a new and different Batman, in a different movie universe, to see him interact with Superman, Wonder Woman and others.

This seems the most likely and most obvious but it's for the best. Trying to return to the world Nolan created without his involvement could end up tarnishing the other movies. Plus a Batman movie without Bruce Wayne would be weird, even if it came out totally cool.

What do you think could work or would be best for the Batman franchise?

I would absolutly love a John Blake film and Nolan said he was finished with Batman but hopefully he feels theres one more story he can tell with Robin. I also think Blake is a great combo of Dick, Jason and Tim not just Tim alone. He was an orphan with anger problems and a great detective sense

Continue the story with Blake becoming Nightwing or make that awesome sounding Batman Beyond movie. Just not another origin story. Everyone knows Batman's origin by now. And who says Bruce can't come back and mentor Blake into becoming Nightwing. We just imply that Bruce won't continue his fight for Gotham. As Blake's mentor he still serves his cause just not as Batman.

I think a Nightwing or Red Robin movie would be awesome and it would definitely work without Batman being in the picture. A Catwoman reboot with Anne Hathaway as Catwoman would be cool too...IF it was done right. Also, who says Christopher Nolan has to be involved? There are others that are just as good as Mr. Nolan. The thing they don't need to do though is reboot the series. It seems like all they want to do in Hollywood now is reboot movies. It kinda makes me sick. The only reason I think a Catwoman reboot would be cool is because its been several years since the Halle Berry Catwoman movie and Hathaway gave such a great performance in The Dark Knight Rises that I think she kinda deserves her own Catwoman movie.

@jeloboy: I agee with this except GL 2, Man of steel 2, cyborg and Aquaman.  we dont need that many movies. I dont think Aquaman and cyborg would be good fit in movie roles. How about Manhunter?

a film adaptation of Batman : Year 100.

To me this would be perfect, it would be a stand alone film. different cast obviously. make it pretty sci-fi, blade runner-esque, it would be like no other comic book movie.

This would be my ideal next batman movie, as it wouldn't interfere with the nolan films at all and could still be awesome in it's own right as something completely different, and still be batman!

What about Talia at the end? Is she pregnant with Batman's baby? She was covered up in the last part of the movie while Batman had been gone for months.

A soft reboot is the only viable option that won't offend everyone. Let my imagination fill in the gaps and continue the legend of Robin "Batman Reborn" Blake in fan fiction or something.

I don't think we see any spinoffs.

The thought of JGL as Nightwing, though, sounds like something I would love to see.

But, without Nolan at the helm...I wouldn't really trust anyone else to do it. The trilogy has Nolan's imprint all over it. Just restart. I don't think an origin flick is needed again, but if they restart with a different vision (different cave, different suit, etc.) everyone will get the idea that it's just a different trilogy. Or arc. Or whatever.

I'm sure a lot of us are still waiting for a strong Robin movie. Chris O'Donnell's portrayal was complete trash and there hasn't been one since. I'm a huge fan of Robin and would like to see Dick Grayson's story be told (properly), starting with the Flying Graysons, becoming Robin and finally emerging as Nightwing.

theres no way that they can immitate the avanegers movie. the movie was planned FOR YEARS, carefully piecing together movie by movie. the JLA moviewill be thrown together and you would have to either take time out of the movie to explain origins(which will take time out of the movie), or just jump in which you STILL have to explain how they came together and why.lol either way the avengers movie gave more time to action because everything was set up so that it gives alot of time to have interactions rather than "who are you? where did you come from? why are you here?"

I agree that Batman should be shelved for now, and then you can reboot the series. A Superman and Batman movie would be great but that and JLA movie seem a bit far fetched right now. Marvel did a great job connecting all of their movies that lead into the Avengers, I would be difficult for DC to follow suit.

And would we really want that? Isn't better to have a great director share with us a new vision of these characters and tell us a great story without just trying to maintain a franchise? That seems limiting.

And do we want to wait 5-7 years for a JLA movie?

I say forget the franchise. Find a visionary director and let him a movie with the way he wants to do it, be it with whatever character the DC universe can provide.

I vote for Flash.

I hope DC/WB can craft Justice League movie in a good manner.

Here's my own btw...

01 - Batman Begins (2005) - character origin

02 - The Dark Knight (2008)

03 - Green Lantern (2011) - character origin

04 - The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

05 - Man of Steel (2013) - character origin

06 - Green Lantern 2 (2014)* - Batman ending cameo holding the "cube" (Justice League #1 - New 52)

-----------after "The Dark Knight Rises" Bruce Wayne decides to protect Gotham because of the "cube thing" unless they want to reboot Batman because Nolan's Bruce Wayne is officially dead or they can come up with something so hard to think.

07 - The Flash (2015)* - character origin; Green Lantern cameo

08 - Man of Steel II (2016)* - Batman/Green Lantern/The Flash ending cameo with the cube (Justice League #2 - New 52)

09 - Wonder Woman (2017)* - character origin; Superman/Batman/Green Lantern/The Flash ending cameo

10 - Cyborg (2018)* - character origin; Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman/Green Lantern/The Flash ending cameo

11 - Aquaman (2019)* - character origin; Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman/Green Lantern/The Flash/Cyborg ending cameo

12 - JUSTICE LEAGUE (2020)* - with Darkseid as the main antagonist

Set it in Nolan's universe, no reboot. Keep it gritty but NOT realistic. Nolan's batman was more active, Make the new series more detective. But not realistic. Bring in the more... 'magical' villains like Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze. And keep JGL as Batman.

It would be great if Nolan could at least act as producer for the next Batman franchise to come - although I don't think we will be that lucky. Whoever reboots this franchise has alot to live up to. I just can't imagine anyone playing the Joker again after Heath - it has to be my favorite performance of all time. Usually performances seem to degrade after repeat viewings - but not with Heath's Joker. Every time I watch the Dark Knight, I see something new in his performance I didn't see the previous time - it just keeps getting better and better.

this needs to stay untarnished. What Nolan did with the franchise was and is amazing, there is no need for another reboot, we still have another 5 years till a JLA movie, (if they plan on making one) anyways, let the bat enjoy his vacation.

If they don't do a film set in the Nolan Batverse I think they should do a Batman Beyond film, possibly bringing back a previous actor to play an older Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton!!) and put some distance between the Nolan films and the inevitable reboot.

You know, I have long been telling my friends they should make a Batman Beyond movie after this trilogy and we have wracked our brains for quite awhile trying to figure out who should play an older Bruce. I don't know why I never thought of casting Michael Keaton before, he would be perfect and a nod to the film that started it all!

Just gimme Batman Beyond with Kevin Conroy playing old Bruce.

Really, I think it's too soon for yet another new look at some of the iconic villains. With Batman Beyond they can focus on something people haven't seen in live action yet. Terry McGinnis and his troublemaking ways would be a nice departure from Nolan's sad take on everything, too. A different character would make a change in tone seem less jarring.

I think there're a few possible spin-offs that can tie directly into Nolan's Batman universe. Like....

How about a Huntress movie? Or similarly, a Birds of Prey film? Both can follow up on the idea that Helena Wayne/Kyle goes to Gotham to claim the Wayne estate. In a Huntress-exclusive film, there's plenty room for plot there. Her presence blows the whistle on what happened to Bruce Wayne. The people who knew Bruce was Batman would wonder if Helena is aware of it and what she plans to do about it if she does. Maybe Bruce raised her to be a hero. Maybe he raised her to not be like him. Maybe he unwittingly became Ras Al Ghul, a bitter man fed up with corruption and willing to take extreme actions (like raising his daughter to be just as bitter).

Comparably, I don't know if Birds of Prey (or really any film about three or more women fighting crime) can ever be done in a non-campy way, but I'd love to see someone try. Similarly still, Black Canary would fit into a dark DC setting as well

In a world where Batman has become a source of inspiration, I think the possibilities are open for literally any of the other Batpeople to get their own film. At the moment, it seems like that spot is solely reserved for Blake, but I don't really know how he would fit in to... well, anything. I suppose it would have to be completely original or maybe borrow from an existing character like Nightwing.

To fit with the theme that "Batman can be anyone", how about a Batman Inc. movie? Surely in the absence of Batman, someone is going to try and keep the legend alive.

Lastly, I imagine a Batman movie that begins around a year after his origin. He's well-established, he's confident. Now let's introduce the first meta-human. It's unknown whether it's a villain or not yet, but it's out of control and needs to be stopped. Batman arrives at the scene and gets completely wrecked. While in recovery, he does some research that opens the door for other meta-humans to enter the picture. When I first thought of that idea, I imagined a young, brash Superman coming to deliver vigilante justice to a criminal that only he currently knows is criminal. To everyone else, he's just an angry guy who's really strong and can fly. Obviously Batman is going to try and take him down. And who doesn't want to see Batman vs Superman finally hit the big screen?

I'll just say this as much as I loved Blake's character in The Dark Knight Rises he should not be Batman Beyond or Nightwing those names belong to Terry and Dick and they've earned it. Now if you give him an original name then great I'd be all for that but I think its disrespectful to all the work DC's done with Terry and Bruce thoughout the years and as a fan of Batman and his "family" I can tell you giving an original character like Robin Blake his own movie with a name of someone elses character isn't fair to either character. Now I wouldn't mind if lets say they continue the series and lets assume Bale is recast because he seems completely done with playing Batman if they allowed Blake to have an all black costume with a splash of Red or Green and similar to catwoman not actually call him Robin but have it be implied then ok and lets assume he dies in the end and through out the movie they did bring in the character of Dick and he wants to help Batman the way Blake did and when he asks something like "What should my name be?" Bruce can look at Blake's costume or a picture of him and say "How about Robin." Dick would still be the first actual Robin and Blake gets to have his moment in the sun.

Off topic (sort of) can I ask why do so many people think it would be better if Batman died at the end? Not trying to impose my own thoughts here but I think thats a bit harsh and kind of takes away from the "The hero never dies" thing from movies and even the comics we love so much. I'm so glad Bruce survived that explosion and I think I'd have hated the movie if they just left it on such a sour note. Its like when Superman, Flash, Superboy or even Batman died in the comics. They don't bring them back to cheapen the death because it'll always mean something they do it in part to continue telling stories but also in part because we love those characters and want to see more of them. Idk can someone please explain it to me because I guess I just don't get it.

It needs a reboot and soon for real Batman fans. I've been waiting for these movies to be over for a while so a more faithful version of the World's Greatest Detective could be made. Batman in the Nolanverse is pretty useless. The Villains are good but Batman sucks.

As a trilogy it delievered chills, and spills that very few manage to deliver and bring an audience like no other. It doesn't need to be rebooted, but a different tale from the Detective Comics could be a fun venture.

A new trilogy, perhaps, where Blake takes up the cowel (or even if he becomes Nightwing, which would be pretty nice too) would still be a reboot, since we'd have him learning how to become a super-hero in a new origin story.... we could even have something based on YEAR ONE there, but with Blake instead of Bruce. There would still be room for Selina and even for Bruce and the rest of the cast, using elements from Beyond, Dark Night and stuff...

Personally they will reboot the Batman series but I hope it's not another origin there is no point, if anything they just need to flash back on it through a scene like the 89 Batman movie. But over all it should be it's own story and batman should be relatively be known already not early in his career.

Do Not EVER allow Joss Whedon near a DC movie

His vision of Wonder Woman was just plain awful and disrespectful towards everything the character stays for.

Whedon himself said that he does not care for DC characters the least bit, and prefers Marvel's type of writing, which just does not fit AT ALL

(not to mention that Whedon is an arrogant primadonna)

@KMART4455: I'll watch it again, but I'm not going back to the theater. I'll wait for home media.

I think down the line, they should make a Batwing movie based off the first eight issues. They're THAT good. At least an animated, but live-action preferred.

Nothing should happen. Batman died, the story should end there.

HOWEVER!

I would not mind seeing Blake as Nightwing in an upcoming movie.

When did this happen??????????????????

End of TDKR. But if you think he somehow escaped the bat plane and avoided a nuclear blast big enough to take out the entire Gotham City, then that's okay. I really don't want to turn this into an argument about an ending that was really open-ended.

I think you're confusing this with Inception. The end wasn't a dream sequence, it was real life. The lawyers noting that Bruce's mom's necklace was missing (Selina had it at end) and the Wayne workers telling Fox that Bruce Wayne had fixed the auto-pilot months ago. He jumped out and set the Bat on auto-pilot. Im not starting an argument either - but I felt like you missed the end of the movie....?

Well, I would not say that I was confusing it with Inception. It has been a long time since I saw that movie. I felt I got the shaft with that ending.

But I am just not a fan of that ending. If Bruce really did survive, then that suuuuuuuuuucks.

I think you might need to go to the theater and see it again.. Especially the end with Fox and Alfred.. You might have missed a few things... lol

Everyone is so anti-reboot until one actually happens. I, personally, would love a reboot. Of course, not for the next few years being that Nolan's trilogy is still fresh in everybody's minds. But perhaps in 5-10 years.

Nolan's movies were good for what they were. Definately interesting. But I want to see a more traditional comic book adaption. Lose the realism angle (be realistic; but defy it where necessary). And no retelling the origin. Everyone knows who Batman is. No need to see everything from Batman Begins again. Just jump into a world where Batman exists. Also, I want to see more of the genius and detective Batman.

As for JL; new Batman, different world. No origin; new actor.

I did like Nolan's trilogy, but I don't want to see any more of it. It was good, in part, because it was self contained. It's time for a new series and a new Gotham.

Batman vs Penguin and Black Mask if they go for a reboot.

Or if they stick to Nolan's world then either a Catwoman spinoff or a Bane/Talia prequel.

I'm not a huge fan of the Nolan films. It's too realistic for me. Batman wasn't brilliant enough, I couldnt see him standing a chance against say superman, where in the comics he does. I hope they do reboot it, with a better suit, a better bat mobile, And a better batman. I do like the movies but I think other superheroes wouldn't work in this style so I think a reboot is needed to fit with the other superhero movies.

I think John Blake was a combination of Dick, Jason and Tim

John Blake was obviously Jason Todd in disguise...he even had pretty much the same origin
