What's Next after 'The Dark Knight Rises'?

You've seen the movie by now. What should happen after this film? (Spoilers).

It sounds like pretty much everyone loved The Dark Knight Rises. As the final act in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, it had a definitive ending and many felt it was what the franchise deserved. But obviously this isn't the actual end of the franchise. Batman will rise once again. The question is, what happens after this film?

No Caption Provided

The story is over and Nolan has stated he is finished with the franchise. Here's some quick thoughts where the franchise could go.

There will be spoilers so hopefully you've done your duty as a Bat-fan and have already seen it at least once.

== TEASER ==

Catwoman Spin-off

No Caption Provided

Many felt Anne Hathaway was a poor choice to be cast as Catwoman (or we should say Selina Kyle). Her performance and the way Selina was written worked better everyone expected. She carried herself perfectly and showed she was more than capable of kicking ass alongside Batman.

Christopher Nolan was impressed with Hathaway's performance and mentioned the following to Access Hollywood.

Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s just a delight to watch her perform. [Selina's] She’s an incredible character and we’re very excited to see her and hopefully we’ll leave people wanting more.

What are the chances of this? Not too likely it seems.

Hathaway did tell Digital Spy that should would love to do one if Nolan was involved. Since Nolan said he's finished with Batman, his involvement wouldn't be likely. Also, do people still have a bad taste in their mouths from the last Catwoman movie?

John Blake/Batman/Robin Spin-off

No Caption Provided

Joseph Gordon Levitt was one of my favorite parts of the movie. He provided the inspiration that Bruce needed to bring himself back to his destiny. With his knowledge of Batman's identity, the name Robin thrown about and the way the movie ended, Blake draws some inspiration from Tim Drake. A movie could pick up after the events of this movie featuring his continuation over the protection of Gotham City.

One of the points that was odd was the fact that in those eight years that Batman was in retirement, no other major villain stepped up to try to claim Gotham for themselves. Despite Batman's sacrifice, you would think someone would try to claim the city believing that he was, in fact, dead.

Would this work? Again, without Nolan, it'd be hard to accept. Blake was a great character but the thought of someone else stepping into this version of Gotham to direct would be difficult.

Start All Over Again

No Caption Provided

Unfortunately it seems that rebooting the franchise is the only thing to do. I've mentioned several times that I would like comic book movies to take the James Bond route and simply recast the character rather than restart and retell the origin.

More likely the next time we'll see Batman on the big screen is if and when the Justice League live-action movie is released. Even though this last film showed that Batman could partner with others (Blake and Kyle), having other costumed superheroes just wouldn't work. We'll have to see a new and different Batman, in a different movie universe, to see him interact with Superman, Wonder Woman and others.

This seems the most likely and most obvious but it's for the best. Trying to return to the world Nolan created without his involvement could end up tarnishing the other movies. Plus a Batman movie without Bruce Wayne would be weird, even if it came out totally cool.

What do you think could work or would be best for the Batman franchise?

Actually Nolan secretly left clues to Blake's future in the series. Blake tries to become the new batman but instead becomes the villain, "Hot Head" and bruce has to return to stop him and save Gotham ...again.

They should make a Robin/Nightwing trilogy. Starting with Batman & Robin with Robin as a main character not Batman. Then, a Teen Titans movie with Robin leaving Batman. Last, a Nightwing movie showing that Robin doesn't want to be under Batman's shadow anymore. After that, they could make a Titans movie. A Justice League movie could just sit in a corner for all I care. A (Teen) Titans movie is what I'm waiting for.

There is obviously going to be another Batman movie. Considering Warner Brothers is set to make several BILLION dollars off this trilogy, they'd have to be crazy not to keep pumping them out. The only question is if it'll be a reboot (hopefully), or if they'll come up with some ghastly scheme to try and continue this series.

I came up with a continuation called "The Dark Knight Returns", where Robin starts out on his own, then finds Bruce Wayne and asks him for help because the Riddler, a new crime-boss, and his thug, Killer Croc, are planning something big.

There will be a sequel, because we have to see Johhny Blake get revenge against the Joker:

The next day Johhny's Parents dropped him off at the Gotham boys' home.

I wouldn't mind seeing a more exegerated Batman now. We know who to make it dark. We know how to make it campy. Now combine them and lets get that going.

I really hope they don't reboot the Batman franchise. Nolans work in the trilogy was spot on, I'd hate to see it be tarnished by someone else. On the other hand, I would like to see a take on Batman Beyond.

It wouldn't tarnish the Nolan trilogy. Well, at first, if they were to reboot the franchise, there is no guarantee that it would be bad. It might even be as good as Batman Begins was, just more comic-book like. Although, I sort of felt that Batman Begins did feel like a comic book and wasn't as realistic as Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises. This is completely off-topic, but maybe they could have established a shared universe after BB and then done TDK and TDKR.

Anyway, back on track. Even if it did turn out to be bad, it really wouldn't have any bearing on the Dark Knight trilogy. People would know that it is a separate universe. Batman is a character that transcends the direction that just one director or producer sets him on. Plus, what? Are they just never gonna have another Batman movie if Nolan isn't involved?

I think that when they reboot the franchise, that they should make the villain one of Batman's rogues that hasn't been featured in a movie yet. Some possibilities that I have in mind are Clayface, Killer Croc, Deadshot, or Hugo Strange.

Just reboot Batman, but have him some ComicBook traits like his black/grey suit. Have it like Batman Dead End. No more for an origin story.

I've always said that I'd love to see a "World's Finest" film more than a Justice League film. So instead of doing an origin story for him again (because everyone on the planet, and their dog knows the origin) it'd be nice to see him team up with Cavill's Superman - it'd also be a good way to build up the DC Cinematic Universe. So I'm game for a reboot just to see some interaction between the Dark Knight and other heroes.

The next batman movie should be called "The Caped Crusader" and do a more comic book movie. It can have an origin story that is told threw flash back sequences. It can open with him already being batman and doing his first mission. Scenes can go with him doing certain things and go to flashback showing him during a training sessions that ties directly with with current obstacle. His parents murder can be told via a dream that haunts him. This way we can get glimpses of his training in various arts. We can also get a chance to see the more extravagant villains. The riddler would be perfect as the first villain as batman's greatest weapon is his mind and the riddler would pose a great challenge. I also think black mask could be a secondary villain as this would allow for more action scenes. This movie should have influences from DCAU(personality wise and how they showed glimpses of his past training) and BatB(specifically his gadgetry usage). It will have a serious tone but would have impossible things happen.

End of TDKR. But if you think he somehow escaped the bat plane and avoided a nuclear blast big enough to take out the entire Gotham City, then that's okay. I really don't want to turn this into an argument about an ending that was really open-ended.

If Nolan could do a Nightwing movie with Blake that would be great (or even be somewhat involved like a producer or something). They can have bruce be a shadowy figure who trains blake and kind of has a Batman Beyond feel to it. If the film is successful then they can turn Blake to Batman in the sequels and maybe add damien as a robin (test tube baby and all). That scenario would work well with the Nolan movie and there would be no need for a reboot.

Other scenario is that they make a World Finest Movie after Man of Steel. I think a Batman Superman movie would be more logical than a JL movie. Everyone knows Batman and Superman, and you can limit the characters involved and focus on their relationship and their differences and at the end of the movie introduce or hint towards other JL members.

If they reboot they need to give it atleast 7-10 years.

we just accept it overs, we quit our enjoyment of this franchise while we're ahead.

but we tell hollywood we don't want an immediate reboot (like spiderman was) we want time to pass,10 to 15 years before another one.

or we tell hollywood actually this is one of those film series like the godfather, were we don't want or need another.

I think you're confusing this with Inception. The end wasn't a dream sequence, it was real life. The lawyers noting that Bruce's mom's necklace was missing (Selina had it at end) and the Wayne workers telling Fox that Bruce Wayne had fixed the auto-pilot months ago. He jumped out and set the Bat on auto-pilot. Im not starting an argument either - but I felt like you missed the end of the movie....?

Honestly for Batman's future I'd love to see Batman Beyond or a spin-off movie for John Blake becoming Nightwing NOT a new Batman. I don't really want them to try to connect all the DC movies like Marvel is doing right now. It'd feel forced as they would only be doing it to keep up with marvel. I want the Superman movie to be strictly about Superman not even a secret after credits clip where he meets Bruce or something. Maybe later on but it just doesn't feel right to do right now.

Well, I would not say that I was confusing it with Inception. It has been a long time since I saw that movie. I felt I got the shaft with that ending.

But I am just not a fan of that ending. If Bruce really did survive, then that suuuuuuuuuucks.

To each his own, but id have to disagree: batman was willing to sacrifice his life, but smart enough to have a backup plan. And with his mission finally accomplished and the mantle of Gotham protector passed to someone worthy, he can live a real life - his reward.

What I'd like to see, is for DC to take this Universe and make it into it's own comic series. I'd like to see this universe play out more, but I'm pretty certain that there'd be too many people against a 4th movie. I for one though, would be 110% okay with a JGL headed Batman movie.

So agree. Blake was more of a Tim Drake to me in the film. Shoot... When i saw Bruce on a caine. I thought Blake would take up the mantle of the Batman and have a element of a Batman Beyond type feel. The Bat reminded me of the Bat Mobile in the Batman Beyond series. Oh Nolan I would like to give you a high five. Next to Bruce Timm.

Why is Nolan no longer sitting in the director's chair a problem for any spin-off? He's a producer for Superman. I just don't think he wants to make another epic with Batman in it, being solely responsible. But I don't think he'd be at all opposed to someone else taking on some of the characters with some of his supervision. He said he's done with the trilogy but being a producer on another film would be something else entirely.

I think a Catwoman spin-off would be better, I may be biased seeing as how I'm a superfan but she had a presence and scene-stealing lure about her. Not to mention, you could do an origin story on Catwoman without involving Batman. She was already Catwoman before Batman but Blake was still just a cop.

I see a cool, transatlantic, mega heist film involving fantastic espionage and fight scenes with Catwoman.

Its already well known that before The Dark Knight Rises released -

Warner Bros. already had plans to REBOOT the franchise after Nolan's departure.

One thing is for certain it will happen sooner than you think. 2014 - Count on it!

You can also count on it being even darker and grittier than the current movies.

i hope they just leave it as it is. im a 100% batman fan but after these 3 films they need to leave it alone. DC has tons of in depth characters they can make films after. As for me i have high hopes for the Man of Steel and have my fingers crossed for a Wonder Woman movie with a 300 kinda feel to it. hot chicks slicing off body parts in slomo...where do i sign.

To be honest, I'd like to see Batman's Cape and Cowl put away from the spotlight for a while. Nolan's finished a spectacular trilogy, it should end on that high note for a little while. I don't doubt to see anymore animated movies or TV shows of course, but there's only so much you could redo again. Maybe some higher tier animated movies could come about eventually, original stories instead of adaptations maybe... Animation has a lot more comic book styled potential to it than live action movies could, plus there's less pressure of having such a broad audience like superhero movies tend to have...

Give Superman and Flash some of the limelight in the live action department for a while. It wouldn't be fair to Batman's character just to keep recycling him in more and more movies just to get fast money. Let him stay in the shadows for a while, don't keep milking him until he goes stale.

No more batmovies for awhile. Put Bruce straight into a justice league movie with his legend already built. That or start with a more nerdy comic feeling movie where bruce is batman and he takes on odd villains. One thing no one ever complains about is that the keaton batman was not an origin story. They started with him already established and as a force. do that with a villain that's not too dependent on his continuity like Doc Hurt or Lincoln March. But I like the JL movie better

Detective Blake 2-3 years later as NightWing or Red Robin, in Bludhaven or in gotham. Against the Black Mask or the Arkham series Riddler. Nolan would be perfect to make this fit into his universe. Gordon-Levitt was great enough in the film. No Bruce Wayne or CatWoman either. Let it be a character developing story like the first movie.

I've always thought that it wouldn't be a bad idea to go down the road maybe 10 years and jump straight into having an established Robin & Batgirl with an older Batman mentor. I don't think it has to be a full on Batman Beyond-type scenario where Bruce is behind the scenes in the Batcave, but I'm not at all against the idea. I think whatever happens, competency is the key. There's nothing that definitively does or doesn't work. Quality of work is what will determine the next stage of success or failure for the Batman movie franchise. Okay I take that back...Bat-nipples definitively doesn't work lol. But they're like the only thing.

A reboot deffinetly will happen because why? Comic book movies are big money, that's the way it is now. I wouldn't mind seeing a batman reboot, only thing though is I have to have faith in the director and cast. I think the "court of owls" story line would work. I also wonder when will they use dirigibles in Gotham city? Batman is such a neat character that everyone here knows deep down that they want another movie sooner or later

If WB reboots Batman they should make it like a mix of Dark Victory with Tim Burton's Batman. Pick up on Batman mid-career and introduce Dick Grayson, and only have Grayson don the Robin mantle at the end of the film. The 2nd movie could be in the time when Damian is becoming Robin, Tim Drake is Red Robin, and Dick is Nightwing, with his suit similar to Batman's, but no cape. The third could have a threat so big, all the Batmen (Bruce, Dick, Tim donning the yellow circle version, Damian and Terry) have to team up and Bruce could die justifiably due to his age. This is the version of Batman that'd have to be in the Justice League movie. I suggest that they introduce the new Batman in the JL film, then have the movies spinoff from that. If they don't reboot and JGL remains Batman, they should delve into his origins a little bit more through flashbacks. The villain could be Cobblepot, the Riddler or someone like that, but they'd have to give the new Batman a challenge and try convince him that he's not fit to be Batman. Alfred could help Blake. They could also add a nod to Bruce being alive, like having him send Blake a new Batsuit or something cool like that. Hopefully it gets rebooted because having Batman NOT be Bruce Wayne or not have him involved at all just feels weird to me.

I'm not a huge fan of the Nolan films. It's too realistic for me. Batman wasn't brilliant enough, I couldnt see him standing a chance against say superman, where in the comics he does. I hope they do reboot it, with a better suit, a better bat mobile, And a better batman. I do like the movies but I think other superheroes wouldn't work in this style so I think a reboot is needed to fit with the other superhero movies.

Batman vs Penguin and Black Mask if they go for a reboot.

Or if they stick to Nolan's world then either a Catwoman spinoff or a Bane/Talia prequel.

Everyone is so anti-reboot until one actually happens. I, personally, would love a reboot. Of course, not for the next few years being that Nolan's trilogy is still fresh in everybody's minds. But perhaps in 5-10 years.

Nolan's movies were good for what they were. Definately interesting. But I want to see a more traditional comic book adaption. Lose the realism angle (be realistic; but defy it where necessary). And no retelling the origin. Everyone knows who Batman is. No need to see everything from Batman Begins again. Just jump into a world where Batman exists. Also, I want to see more of the genius and detective Batman.

As for JL; new Batman, different world. No origin; new actor.

I did like Nolan's trilogy, but I don't want to see any more of it. It was good, in part, because it was self contained. It's time for a new series and a new Gotham.

Nothing should happen. Batman died, the story should end there.

HOWEVER!

I would not mind seeing Blake as Nightwing in an upcoming movie.

When did this happen??????????????????

End of TDKR. But if you think he somehow escaped the bat plane and avoided a nuclear blast big enough to take out the entire Gotham City, then that's okay. I really don't want to turn this into an argument about an ending that was really open-ended.

Well, I would not say that I was confusing it with Inception. It has been a long time since I saw that movie. I felt I got the shaft with that ending.

But I am just not a fan of that ending. If Bruce really did survive, then that suuuuuuuuuucks.

I think you might need to go to the theater and see it again.. Especially the end with Fox and Alfred.. You might have missed a few things... lol
