What Will Bane & Catwoman Do in The Dark Knight Rises?

Speculations drawing from what we know, now.

It goes without saying that the recent confirmations of Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway's roles in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES have gotten the whole internet a’talking. I figured the time was right to go into a little more in-depth analysis 'n speculation about what their involvement might mean and how Bane and Catwoman could figure in to this Bat-finale.

The last known picture of these suspects together...
The last known picture of these suspects together...

BANE

In some ways, Bane's hairy back has as much terrifying potential as the Joker's Glasgow smile.
In some ways, Bane's hairy back has as much terrifying potential as the Joker's Glasgow smile.
I was initially a little underwhelmed hearing that this was the villain Hardy was actually playing. After a grand schemer like Ra’s al-Ghul and an agent of chaos like the Joker, it honestly sounded anticlimactic for Batman to take on a juiced luchador. Plus, he’s already shown up in the movies, so it might feel repetitive. However, after only a little reflection, I realized Bane’s actually the perfect choice for a final heavy. Out of all the villains left in the rogue’s gallery, he’s one of the few with a gimmick that's still impressive even as it’s close to reality. It takes a lot of creative thinking to devise ways to make reptile men and waking refrigerators work in the more down-to-Earth Gotham Nolan and his crew have established. But Venom? That isn’t far off from monster-making performance drugs like HGH. == TEASER ==
Bane's due for some on-screen redemption.
Bane's due for some on-screen redemption.

Part of the M.O. of the series so far has been to portray characters in ways closer to the comics than the movies have allowed in the past. Hence, we’ve seen a Bruce Wayne who’s an intentionally buffoonish persona, a seriously embittered Two-Face and a legitimately scary Joker. In BATMAN & ROBIN, Bane was a monosyllabic brute who did Poison Ivy’s dirty work - - a gross simplification of the cerebral and articulate brute who was cunning enough to deduce Batman’s secret identity on his own.

 Without the help of Venom...
 Without the help of Venom...

Whereas the previous villains have struck at Batman’s loved ones and psyche, Bane’s the first who’s a very legitimate physical threat. I don’t think he’s going to be a Hulk-like monster who gets absurdly muscular with the twist of a valve. Rather, I see him as a roided-up-but-calculated killer who’s got an arsenal of grappling moves (think more Vale Tudo than pro-wrestling) in addition to the usual choice of knives and guns.

Anybody who doubts if Tom Hardy’s big enough for the part needs to look at the pic to the right. Do you honestly still have doubts? Hardy played a very Bane-like role already as the UK career-convict in BRONSON. Aside from the possibility of a nondescript South American accent, I don't see this being much of a jump from that part.

CATWOMAN

It'll be a challenge to step in her paw prints...
It'll be a challenge to step in her paw prints...
Looking closely at the press release Warner issued, you’ll notice that Hathaway’s been confirmed as Selina Kyle, not Catwoman. I totally doubt any publicity agent thought that could pull a fast one on audiences and get them to be surprised when she became a cat-burglar (and sometimes vigilante) in the movie. Thus, it suggests that Ms. Kyle might actually just be a love interest for Wayne as a civilian only. Or, they might just repeat THE DARK KNIGHT's treatment of Two-Face and have her do all the things she does in the comics without actually being called Catwoman outside of passing remarks.
 When Selina Kyle's
When Selina Kyle's "costume" is revealed, will it basically look like this?

Once again, I was a little disappointed to see them use a villainess who’s already shown up in a number of movies (and Michelle Pfeiffer’s sexually-charged dominatrix act is hard one to follow.) I think there’s more to it, now, though. Escalation’s the dominant theme of this new franchise and if Batman’s villains are ramping up in power and theatricality, it follows that his girlfriends would follow suit. The point of Rachel Dawes’ arc was that she, as a normal woman, couldn’t handle Batman’s lifestyle - - both emotionally and literally.  She ultimately rejected Bruce because she needed a normal man and ultimately perished for her involvement in this world of psychopaths. Catwoman, for one, wouldn’t be a girl who’d get kidnapped by third-rate crooked cops and, rather than being turned-off by a brooding vigilante, she’d probably be further enticed.

OTHER VILLAINS?

 The other villain?
 The other villain?
I've got a strong hunch that there are more villains (or, at least, antagonists) that've yet to be announced. My wish for the crime/justice escalation war producing a whole gang of supervillains who overrun Gotham might be too much for this third movie (although Bane did famously break the whole rogue’s gallery out of Arkham in KNIGHTFALL) but there is still that lingering hint from DARK KNIGHT’s conclusion. Just as the ending of BATMAN BEGINS forshadowed the Joker, so too did that ending foreshadow the GCPD's much-more-serious manhunt for Batman. Considering that Hardy was rumored to play Harvey Bullock for a while and Sarah Essen was named as a potential female lead some time back, I think it’s clear that there’s going to be at least one super cop coming in who’ll try to take the bat down legitimately.

Tom Hardy in Bronson is probably a spit smaller than Bale in the first batman flick he did. Dark Knight, Bale was a bit smaller.

So he's going to have to hit the weights and probably the juice if they plan on having him be a meat head for this film

They better do Bane justice this time.
The last (awful) previous attemp ruined Bane's image for all cartoons and games that came after.

Bane I supposed to be smart and dangerous enough without Venom (none of that silly "skinny guy pumped up by toxin juices becomes huuuuge")
I'd love if they uses Bane's original comic book introduction as main plot for this movie.
(and I could imagine the toxin playing a role with Scarecrow already introduced in the movies)

I'm absolutely thrilled when I heard that  Bane was gonna be the main villain. I know Tom will do the job right. I mean hell Bronson was pretty damn close to Bane's origin almost. What's good is that Tom has already build a foundation of muscle from his role in Bronson. NOW he just needs to add some more. Like I'm talking about Chris Hemsworth (Thor) big. I recommend he talks to him or the Rock and get on their workout and diet plan to pack on more muscle. If that means he has to juice then so be it :D

I honestly think we'll get something like this when Batman and Bane go at it, and I think they should use that mask. Since you'll be able to see Tom's mouth and eyes, and should go with the voice close to that like Henry Silva.

Something like this wouldn't be bad of how Tom should maybe look like.

I'm happy that Selina is gonna be in it but I'm not thrilled with who they got. I would've preferred Olivia Wilde, Carla Gugino, Mia Kirshner or Emmy Rossum to play Selina. But I guess we'll see what happens.  I'm still hoping Black Mask to be in this, and I'm still hoping Nolan reteams with Guy Pearce and has him play Black Mask. If not him Tim Olyphant would good too. Be interesting too if they did have Lady Shiva or Talia be in the movie too. Since they've been scouting Asia for locations. Could be where Batman does have his back broken , and either two of those ladies help retrain him and rehabilitate him. This is a HUGE maybe but Killer Croc could be in it cause of them checking out Louisiana  and what a good way to show how powerful Bane is and show him and Croc going at it and have Bane break Crocs arms like in Knightfall. Just all theories. With Nolan you have to expect the unexpected.  I'm still hoping Bullock, Montoya, Essen  & Allen be the new cops brought in to replace the paid of cops that Gordon thought he trusted. I would LOVE to have Michael Chiklis as Bullock . Just picture Bullock like Vic Mackey except with a stogie, trenchcoat and fedora. And I would love it if someone like Michelle Rodriguez as Montoya. "

The mask is kinda lame, but everything else is perfect.

"
It was more the immortal thing than the pit which I guess they would have to work in as well. Ras is an excellent villain and Nolan took that away by making him a plain old eco terrorist instead of an immortal one. The Joker had parts of him that were right out of the comics but for the most part he was just an anarchy crazed thug. No Lazarus Pit, no chemicals and no Joker toxin leads me to believe there will be no Bane Venom which is a huge part of his character.  Batman was the worst though. Nolan's Batman is NOT "The World's Greatest Detective" and that's not up for debate.

I always disagree with people about Nolan's take. His tweek was taking comic book elements out of a comic book movie and for me it just wasn't working. Whenever talking about The Dark Knight I classify it as an amazing movie but a failure of a comic book movie.  "

Lazarus pits and smilex are bigger part of  Ra's and joker than venom is to bane, and we still did scarecrow's gas if memory serves me correct.

I am a big fan of Nolan and everything he has done with Batman has been excellent.  I do think they will stay away from Selina being a prostitute like in Year One since DC has shied away from that as much as possible.  Haven't seen much of Tom Hardy's work but loved him in Inception and I think he'll do a great job as Bane.  I can't wait for this movie and will go see it at midnight on opening day.

Tom Hardy's Bane is something Im looking foward to , I dont doubt his ability to portrey a cool villian , and also trust Nolan's selection of him , but Anne Hathaway???? She so ugly and her horse face *shudders* something I realized Nolan's choice of female characters in must of his movies are lackluster and mediocre at best , I still hope that Anne is just a lie :(

@THEBlaqueBasterd: I understand your flabbergastness but for me it just wasn't Batman.

@entropy_aegis: We got Scarecrow gas which is why I didn't mention him. Nolan's take on Scarecrow was pretty good I thought. Two-Face also. I hate Two-Face and think he is one of the worst villains ever but they did a great job keeping his character somewhat accurate and made you feel for him. The comics and animated series never did that. It was always "Awww a Two-Face episode". I just thank the universe he didn't choose Penguin.

What was wrong with her being a prostitute in Year One? It didn't bother me in the least. I think that Selina was a very interesting character with great depth. I can sort of see why female readers were offended by it, but aside from the prostitute part, what was bad about her as a human being in Year One?

I’m not exactly sure Anne Hathaway will be doing. In some ways I’m hoping she doesn’t wear Catwoman costume. As for Bane, will the introduction of steroids in pop culture over the last few years, I’m very interested in the take that could be taken concerning Bane. I wish he woulda been introduced as a member of the League of Assassins working directly for Talia, possibly as a fallen heir to Ra’s who sided with Talia in a split. Or something along those lines...

Based off of what Nolan has done so far, I trust him to make this work. The man has a real feel for the character of Batman and his enemies. Part of me wonders if, even though he has said in the past there will be no Robin, if he doesn't use the whole broken Bat idea as a way to introduce a Robin as a potential replacement or fill-in as opposed to a sidekick. Who knows. Regardless, I'm looking forward to it.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES needs:
The Batmobile.
Wayne Manor rebuilt.
Arkham Asylum rebuilt.
Killer Croc, Joker, and Two-Face references.
Dick Grayson somewhere. Not as Robin, though.
Some kind of villain outbreak.
Better representation of Zsasz.
Some more iconic cops like Montoya, Bullock and Essen.
Batgirl (if done right) wouldn't be a bad idea either. (a copycat/ultimate fan)

I'm not a massive Anne Hathaway fan, but I've seen her in some stuff recently which is making me like her a lot more. However I really preferred the marion Coultard rumour..if not as Catwoman than I would have loved her as Talia.

As for Hardy and Bane..I am fairly certain I peed a little when I heard this..I've loved for years now and Bane is one of mr favourite DC characters..I was mortified by Bane in Batman & Robin and this is just the right combinations coming together to bring me pure joy.

im sorry but i could not be more dissapointed with the character choices for this film...to me bane has always had more of a henchman vibe than an actual villain, and i really couldnt care less about catwoman in film...i was hoping for more of a cerebral approach...i mean from the very first film nolan has been pushing and pushing the mafia and organized crime in our face i was seriously hoping black mask was gonna make an entrance, or at the very list the riddler or hush.

I think they´re good choises for the film. Many think of bane as he apeared on Batman and Robin where he was brainless, but the original character is actually the oposite, is brains and brawl in one and that makes him a great foe for batman. Also, he doesn´t hate batman, if not sees himself as a conqueror and consider Batman the challenge that will give him the crown of Gotham´s underworld.
In the movie as a realistic aprox he should be a newcomer who aspires to become the citiy´s main crime boss. He actually doesn´t need the venom, just make the implication that he uses steroids and likes to do his own dirty jobs.
Selina Kayle is not anounced as Catwoman, but neither were Crane as Scarecrow or Dent as Two-Fase, but finally they apear in that way, and if Nolan didn´t wanted CW on the movie, the love interest would be another character.

now that was one good article. Previously i had thought of Bane as exactly what Batman & Robin made him be,... a mindless brute on steroids. Then i found out the comics version was badass AND in the cartoon he's still something more than just nothing (of course this depends on WHICH cartoon we talk about, BTAS or Brave and the Bold, where he's still one of those dumb goons). However his character was made as....an experiment? publication wise, his history takes root in death of Superman, when Doomsday killed Superman and sales went up. How many characters were created those days? (in Superman) How many do we talk about today? not much Crenshaw, not much Doomsday, or Cadmus? Well Superboy lives on but has changed a lot from the original incarnation, at least to what i can see. But Bane is still popular. I see him as a not COMPLETELY original character made up to see where he'll go, AND maybe one of those characters you pull out when you need a villain, not necessarily with much thought. BUT the fact remains that you wouldn't want to cross paths with him. The man who broke the bat,.......should we expecting something,....disastrous in the next Batman movie?

I'm confident in Nolan-- I've loved all of his movies, Batman or otherwise. My only issue right now is that they cast a white British guy in a Hispanic role. As much as I love Tom Hardy. We'll have to see how that plays out, though.

I'm still hopeful that Talia will show up; I think she'd be a fantastic fit in the movies, and I would really like to see Nolan's telling of her.

Well, he said he'd quit outright if Robin were introduced. And I think the bigger issue is timeline-- since this is Batman's early adventures, Grayson would be very young, still.

Bane's Venom can be aplied to Nolanverse DC very well. It doesn't need to be a Human Growth Hormon it can be some berserker - drug. That would fith very well with capabilities of Venom. Anyway i hoped that Bane would be another villain. He is the perfect choice.

I think Bane's an excellent choice.
Some people are mad that Tom Hardy is British and Bane is supposed to be Latino...
Well, in the comics it turned out his father was King Snake (i think)
and King Snake is a British dude - so I think Hardy will work out just fine.
Bane would be easy to make into a realistic, believable villain.
Ditch the wrestler-inspired outfit, but keep the cool mask.
Maybe even ditch the venom - he doesn't even need it.
Bane could have so much hatred in him that it's kinda like venom in his veins...
Make him the more violent/ evil dark counterpart to Batman.
Since Bats is on the outs with the law, Bane could come in and take his place,
using lethal force on the bad guys - maybe even kill the Scarecrow.
He should use all types of lethal weapons (blades/guns) - things Bats wouldn't.
There's a rumor that the League of Shadows will be in the movie.
It would be quite a twist if Bane turned out to be Ras' son. (in this movie version)
Maybe he was a member of the League of Shadows, but his father kicked him out because he was too bloodthirsty, etc. He could have been Ras' greatest pupil until Bruce came along.
Perhaps Bane wants revenge on Bruce because of his father's death,
But only because HE wanted to be the one to kill his dad, etc.
Would be cool...

The only major characters in the Dark Knight not played by an Academy Award nominated actor or actress are Rachel Dawes, Bane, Scarecrow and Commissioner Gordon.  Even the crimelords (Wilkinson and Roberts have one).  So I am happy to see Hathaway in as Catwoman (she would have made a good Talia as well.)

As for Catwoman, I can't wait to see the costume and story.  The background story for Selena in Batman Returns was so weak.  I hope they either go back to the roots like they should and sort of have a reason for her putting on the costume like they did for Bruce in Batman Begins, or she just shows up and starts doing stuff like Joker did in TDK.  Either way I am expecting a more practical costume, not the head to toe vinyl.  Something more like Catwoman for the second series.

@HexThis: given your excellent break down of Selinas character and potential
your lack of knowledge on Banes actual character definitions &potential is kindof shocking..Here is a man who is prettymuch the criminal version of Batman..not to be taken lightly or simply regarded as a "steroid jock" (unless of course your going by Batman &Robin -__-)

I do however wholeheartedly agree with your ideas for Catwoman..she HAS to be a challenge &an equal for it to work..but  at the same time this isnt a Catwoman movie so to make it work without overshadowing Bruce will take an extremely skilled actress
