What Happened To The Runaways Movie?

The screenwriter speaks. Apparently, it was delayed for the Avengers.

They're not happy about having to wait.

Reports and developments for a RUNAWAYS movie were flying fast and fierce for a while, there. Peter Sollet would direct it, Drew Pearce of NO HEROICS would write it, some actors had even been locked to star in it and then… progress quietly halted. Since the slow-down coincided with the announcement of Marvel TV initiatives, I figured what happened was that RUNAWAYS was being reworked as a show.

Indiewire caught some of Pearce’s comments on a recent screenwriting panel, however, that finally set the record straight. He explained that the project’s been put on hold for a year- -along with other projects - - while Marvel’s putting all its focus on THE AVENGERS. Which makes sense. No matter how much hyberbole you pile on, any statement about how much is riding on that flick would be an understatement.

Anyway, Pearce says Marvel’s happy with his script and they must be especially happy with it, because he’s co-writing IRON MAN 3 with its director, Shane Black. Whenever RUNAWAYS does get rejiggered along with the DR. STRANGE, ANT-MAN and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY flicks, I do still think it'd work better as a TV show. I just don’t see these kids and the Pride, et al, fitting too cleanly into Marvel’s cinematic universe.
