What Could the War of the Green Lanterns Be About?

We breakdown some possibilities as well as what's happening in the current Green Lantern series.

The War of the Green Lanterns is hitting shelves next month, and the question on most Lantern fans' minds is, "what is this story going to be about anyway?" The arc will start in March and it will continue through May. So far, all that's been released is the teaser picture below.

The problem is that there are three main Green Lantern books going on right now and each of them is off doing it's own thing. It's hard to piece together what could happen in this upcoming story arc. Let's take a look at how this War may happen based on the info from we have from the books. Now, Green Lantern #62 and Green Lantern Corps #57 both come out next week, and considering the amount of things that have happened in Emerald Warriors #7 this week, we should be seeing a lot of things unraveling next Wednesday.
== TEASER ==

Zardor

If you haven't been reading Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors, then you're missing out on a non-lantern corps related threat: Zardor. For the past few years, all the battles in the Green Lantern books have revolved around one color lanterns fighting some other colored lanterns. In Emerald Warriors, the Green Lanterns are facing an enemy with an immense amount of power: The power of telepathy.

We've seen numerous telepaths in comic books over the years, like  Hector Hammond, for example. Yet, what sets Zardor apart from many of them is that he is a physical threat. Zardor is intelligent, a telepath, and he's willing to throw down in a fist fight. What makes him an even bigger threat is that he has a plan, "Control the Corps... Control the universe!" He's already started taking over Green Lanterns, and one of those Green Lanterns is Sodam Yat. Sodam Yat, aside from being a Green Lantern, essentially has the same powers as Superman making him a very dangerous enemy. We've seen a bit of the power Zardor has when he took control of a few lanterns and they fought Guy Gardner, Kilowog, Arisia, and Bleez. Zardor has shown the ability to control strong lanterns and multiple lanterns at once. Could he be behind this War?

Lost Lanterns

Have they had enough time to cool off after being left for dead when Hal Jordan went rogue years ago? Sure, Hal did rescue them, but the Lost Lanterns, or what's officially left of them, may still hold a grudge.

The group of lanterns has faced even more hardships since Blackest Night. A few of them have been killed and others had to face Cyborg Superman as he controlled the Alpha Lanterns. They may not be united, at this point, but who's to say that other forces can't unite what's left of this group and refuel their rage to the man who left them for dead years ago, Hal Jordan?

Krona

Krona is responsible for the creation of the multiverse, in a sense. In addition, he helped create the Antimatter Universe, which in turn gave Sinestro the ability to have his ring forged by the Qwardian, Weaponer. Krona has been obsessed with collecting the emotional entities during the Brightest Day storyline, and in Green Lantern #62, he succeeds. How does this tie-in to the War of the Green Lanterns though?

Krona is a singular, villainous force with immense power. He is, for all intensive purposes, invulnerable and immortal. He has already shown control over the embodiment of the orange light, Ophidian combine with Hector Hammond, and who's to say he can't do that with the other entities? We've recently seen Parallax take over the Flash, so maybe Krona will use these entities on other lanterns to spark the war.

Whatever the cause of this coming war, one thing seems certain: this war is all about control. Sure, we've seen tension between certain Green Lanterns with Ganthet and Guy Gardner because of their blood pact with Atrocitus, but with two villains (three if you count Cyborg Superman's hold over the Alpha Lanterns, but chances are he's dead for now) having the ability to control other lanterns, it looks like this war could be less about tensions between fellow lanterns and more about influence. To make this war worthwhile, Krona and Zardor should be working together to maximize the threat. Can their influence refuel the Lost Lantern's rage? Will the emotional entities take over key Lantern Corps members? What role will Sinestro and his new second hand man, Weaponer, play in this war? While the story seems to be unraveling, there are so many unanswered questions. What do you think will happen? How will this war get started?

I can't wait! It's a huge year for Green Lantern!

Haven't read Green Lantern before. Do you advise me to read something else before this?

I'm really hoping that it's some kinda uprising against the Guardians led by Ganthet, Guy, or Hal. Nearly everyone HATES the way the Guardians run the show, and they have been screwing up much more lately, by not only allowing Blackest Night to happen, but by inadvertently causing it to happen when they were trying to prevent it. If I'm off base and a full blown uprising doesn't happen this year it will happen soon. Mark my words it's only a matter of time

@Mucklefluga:

well the way the last year has been and the year before that there are a lot of books to be read if you want to know what is going on.  You have the rebirth of Hal, Agent Orange, Rage of the Red Lanterns, and Blackest night.  My reccomendation would be to look up the volumes on here, or wikipedia because there is a LOT of reading.  Not a good time to just jump in.  Comic Vine does a good job to tell back stories of characters so you know who is who and what it going on.

@Mucklefluga: Maybe start with Rebirth and if you like it keep going through the trades up until now, or get Secret Origin.

Green Lantern has been so good for a few years now.  I can't see this being bad.

Everything about the story seems great except Zardor's involvement.  Don't get me wrong, I like his character but with his control over some GLs, does this not smack heavily of Shadowland? Posession is becoming SO cliche now.

Whatever the cause, I believe it has everything to do with Hal Jordan.

flashpoint and this cant wait !!!!

Debating on whether I'm going to read this event or Flash Point, I doubt I'll be doing both. I don't Emerald Warriors or Corps and I'm not found of buying tie in event issues for series I don't read.

everything in comics is rehashed. 75+ years of hundreds of titles spanning dozens of major comics companies.... you'll be hard pressed to come up with something that hasnt been done before in some fashion.
whats important is that it feels fresh even as we know its been done before. And Zardor feels fresh enough to me.

Im not sure why but I think this will mostly be about Hal and Guy more like a Civil War among the GL's I think that this event will pit Guy vs Hal and everyone else chooses a side, more than likely John sides with Hal and Kyle with Guy...Im probably way off base with this but..we will find out soon enough.

OK thanks for the advise

What we know for now is Krona and Zardor are indeed working together, but Zardor is already suspicious of Krona's plan as it pertains to Sodam Yat. Taking Yat was kind of his way of balancing the partnership more in his favor.

I think you're spot on though in this War will be more about influence and less about people just not liking each other. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the players come together, as the three books currently have them spread out.

For anyone interested in jumping on board the Green Lantern train, it truly is worth it. Emerald Warriors, GL Corps and GL are three of my favorite books right now.

Zardor and Krona's alliance is already very frail as Krona tried to use Sodam Yat against Zardor and he recognized Krona's hand in it. Also there's another possibility: when Captain Atom travels to the future and meets the Power Girl led JLA, she says Superman is fighting the Green Lanterns because they are at war with Earth. Could be this...

Batman inc, Flashpoint and now this. These big events are really turning my head around...guess its time to jump on the gl bandwagon lol.sounds promising

The promo picture makes the rings look like the toy rings that came out during Blackest Night. I should know, I have one and carry it with me everywhere in my Batman messenger bag.

Wow that sounds really interesting...

Hopefully this story stays self contained

To be honest I've never picked up a Green Lantern book, but for a while now ComicVine has had nothing but good things to say about all books pertaining to GL's. Might have to take a couple months and rip through the last 10 years or so of the Green Lantern mythos and catch up to some of these supposedly amazing arcs. Hope its worth it

God I have a lot of catching up to do.

Same thing I was thinking

What I'm hoping is that this is where we'll see the green lanterns rise up against the guardians, because that has been a long time coming. I look at Atrocitus' prophecy during rage of the red lanterns. He says the guardians will take Hal's greatest love from him and then Hal will wipe out the guardians. I could easily see the guardians arresting Carol for being the leader of the sapphires and locking her up and Hal has to lay siege to OA to get her back and that the war will be about who is still loyal to the guardians and who sides with the veteran lanterns who are fed up with their leadership.

From what we have scene, the green lantern corp is going to be split up into factions where Hal Jordans priorities will be with taking down krona with the help of the other lantern corps, which in turn will upset the guardians who will send squads after hal to bring him in.

At the same time we have a mind controller who is going to more than likely mind control quite a few of the lanterns and turn them against the rest of the corp. with sodam yat weak to psychic attacks he will be front runner for Zardor's side.

If anything what we will be getting from all of this, that maybe all of the guardians with the exception of ganthet will actually be killed or step down from the green lantern corp. their ties to the power of white makes them huge targets and most people mistrust them as they have mishandled the job of guardians for many eons.

We will more than likely see rise of new guardians such as Salak who anyone that reads the series knows that he is a prime choice. as well as adventure comics fans might see rise of Sodam Yat falling into fate as guardian of the universe.

As for the fight between Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan, i think Guy will surcumb to the red rage again and will fight for atrocitus against the green lantern corps.

i think the war is going to be about a internal uprising or GL civil war with john, hal, guy, and kyle on different sides.
