What Could Happen In A Captain America Sequel?

It's quite obvious who the villain is going to be... but what other friends, lovers and allies might return?

After all the months and years of speculation, the movie we thought we'd never see is at last here. Needless to say, there are MAJOR SPOILERS below. If you read them after this warning and complain about how your experience is diminished, then you absolutely deserved to be hauled away by nasty MP officers and thrown into a stockade.

It's alright if we're speculating about sequels. Cap's already looking ahead, himself.
It's alright if we're speculating about sequels. Cap's already looking ahead, himself.
== TEASER ==

VILLAINS?

Well, the AVENGERS movie is basically a direct sequel to this flick, and I expect the arc of Cap’s adjustment to modern times will be covered there. However, Marvel’s already got screenplays for more solo movies being written and I don’t suspect they’re going to be “gaidens” that’ll fill the gaps of Cap’s wartime adventures. The playing field is thus almost totally open in respect to what villains could appear.

Might we see a revived HYDRA led by the Fenris twins, Viper, the Serpent Society or perhaps a highly-revised version of Baron von Strucker? THE FIRST AVENGER drops Cap into a more generalized fantasy scenario, so I can’t really see him facing any threats like the Hate-Monger, Dr. Faustus, Crossbones or Baron Zemo who're specifically meant to be Neo-Nazis. I suspect that the Skull will return at some point because that energy trail in his apparent death scene bore a more-than-passing resembling to the wormhole that transported Asgardians to and fro in THOR.

Zemo's cool and all, but I just don't see him working here.
Zemo's cool and all, but I just don't see him working here.

The notion of there being other Captain Americas who served while Steve was on ice is actually a fairly big part of the character’s mythos, so maybe we’ll see him confronting embittered successors like the USAgent or Nuke (to borrow a cue from ULTIMATE CAPTAIN AMERICA?) Unless he were changed over as much as Arnim Zola was, I can’t see M.O.D.O.K. (or AIM for that matter) fitting into this more realistic milieu. I could see heavily-retooled versions of international villains like Flag Smasher and Batroc coming in to harp on the messier state of global politics today in comparison to what seemed so much simpler during World War II. However, the most likely antagonist has already been introduced…

THE WINTER SOLDIER?

The best bet heel for the next movie. Put your money down on it.
The best bet heel for the next movie. Put your money down on it.

Bucky falls, but we don’t see him land. We don’t see the body. He disappears in enemy territory and Cap doesn’t ever get much time to really mourn his best pal.

Those are some strong clues, there.

One of the more eyebrow-raising details of all of this movie's casting announcements concerned the one for Sebastian Stan getting locked as Bucky. The report said that he’d signed on for five or six movies. Considering how Joe Johnston's already voiced his interest, it’s clear that Mr. Barnes is going to come back. He might not be called the Winter Soldier and he not have a lot of time logged in Soviet Russia (and I doubt he’ll have anything close to a relationship with the movies' Black Widow,) but I’d put money down to say that he’ll return as a semi-immortal, brainwashed antagonist who’ll force Steve to fight his best friend.

THE HOWLING COMMANDOS?

I've got a hunch that these joes are going to show up again, in some form or another.
I've got a hunch that these joes are going to show up again, in some form or another.

Why do I feel like these guys will be back? For one, Neil McDonough’s a fairly big actor for such a small part. It’s somewhat akin to Sam Jackson’s brief appearances as Mace Windu in THE PHANTOM MENACE. You just know his appearance is there just to square business for more. Also, Variety reported that Derek Luke is scheduled to reprise his role in THE AVENEGRS, so I could see these guys becoming the founding members of SHIELD and then staying young for decades thanks to the Infinity Formula. Maybe the idea seems maybe too “comic-booky” at first, but it might be something that could just as easily be played down to seem at least somewhat more realistic.

PEGGY & SHARON CARTER?

No Caption Provided

Back during the screen tests, I recall this part being described as something that would also entail a multi-picture deal. Maybe that was misinformation, but if it wasn’t, I don’t think Hayley Atwell would be returning for flashback cameos alone. My guess is that they might follow the conceit of having Sharon Carter be the spitting image of her aunt Peggy, and the actress would play a different-yet-still-the-same role. However, that kind of coincidence might be too hokey (or creepy, if you think too hard about the family connection) for this cinematic universe. The ending of THE FIRST AVENGER eludes to it somewhat by having Cap greeted by a SHIELD agent who resembles Peggy, so maybe the plan is just to hire another actress who looks like her. Or, considering how she’s part of a prototype of SHIELD, maybe she’ll also be staying young with the aforementioned Infinity Formula over all the decades and years.

I don't know if a pure Cap sequel can work, especially after Avengers.

I'm pretty sure Winter Soldier will be a villain in the Cap sequel, he won't be the "main" villain I would suspect but will probably be the one who fights Cap the most in the movie while being controlled by the real main villain who I would guess would be HYDRA since I could see them going that direction so that they don't have to explain the whole Russian/Soviet Union/Lukin stuff. They could play on the idea that instead Bucky's body was found half frozen in the river that could be seen (that I would guess he landed in after falling off the train) by HYDRA agents after Zola was captured by Cap. Since I only saw the movie once, I wasn't sure how his left arm looked after being blasted through the side of the train but it's possible that it was messed up (but not completely blown off) while Cap's shield took most of the damage and they could use that as the reason for his bionic arm. Too early to guess at this point, we'll have a better idea most likely after The Avengers comes out next year and Marvel starts focusing on sequels for Cap and Thor, along with IM3 and the other spin-offs like Black Widow.

I don't like Righetti as Sharon Carter. Shes just a pretty face and looks nothing like Hayley Atwell. If they just want Cap to hook up with a bimbo SHIELD agent they might as well just  get him with Black Widow (like in Ultimate Avengers).

In the limited universe of these films, I feel too many people from WWII being alive and young would destroy the whole man-out-of-time theme for Cap. If you can form a social club, you're really not all that unique.

Winter Soldier, Red Skull, or a similar villain could work, but I'm fully opposed to Cap having a carried over support system.

They should have Sharon and have Steve think that it's Peggy but he ends up seeing her in a nurseing home with Alzheimer's. If they did that scene weel it could make a very powerful scene.

spoilers about captain america and the avengers:

OK, so since the Avengers will be dealing with Loki, the Skrulls, and such,
and since the Red Skull was vanished by the Cosmic Cube, I think the Cap sequels will see the return of the Red Skull into modern times like Captain America.  Except unlike Cap, he wasn't frozen, just locked in suspended animation because of the cube, maybe inside the cube.  Someone will do something to the cube, like Loki, or SHIELD, and free the Red Skull into 2000 something.

Also, most of Caps enemies now have ties to enemies he made in WWII, Baron Zemo, Baron Blood, Armin Zola, Red Skull, Hate Monger, etc.
But just because they were WWII bad guys in the comics doesn't mean they have to have that same connection in the movies.  Baron Zemo can be a modern day bad guy, have no connection to WWII.  Maybe he is the descendant of a WWII Baron Zemo, but no connection to Captain America until they meet in modern times after Cap was unfrozen.

Crossbones and Winter Soldier Are fan favorites. They might introduce Sin too if there are sequels. I'd like to see Falcon in a 3rd. But the thought of the whole sequel thing might not work so well. It'd be smarter to try a winter soldier spin-off after the Avengers.

I'm really sold that we'll see a Nick Fury Agent Of Shield movie at some point down the line, aside from in his early interviews about upcoming Marvel live action
films Stan Lee continued to mention that title, and it's the only one as of yet to be made that he has, and I doubt Jackson would have done all of these cameo's
without the promise of a full feature with him in the staring role.

I am so tired of Red Skull, Zemo, and Strukker (whatever)... get past WWII and there are TONS of bad guys that Captain America could fight.  Winter Soldier/Bucky should be in the movie, but not as a foe. Hell, make one up!  Red Guardian almost stole his costume... but, we ain't mad at the Russkies these days... just don't let it be a "Whiplash" mess-up like in Ironman2.  (Worst ever... Remember Doc Oct... mo better!)
Oh, and Namor  and the Human Torch want some screen time...

have winter soldier be siced on cap and have zemo revealed as the mastermind, and have flashback to some "training" fights from WWII since one flaw in the movie was that it made it seem like cap had no experience and just a buff guy that punches people.
and zemo gets a new henchman in cap 3 who will be crossbones. cap/bucky vs zemo/crossbones, ta-da.

Bring back Hayley Atwell, lighten her hair a little bit (I'm not sure if she'd look as great as a straight-up blonde, but maybe a dirty blond would look nice on her), give her an American accent and suit her up as Sharon Carter.  Would that be weird?  Probably, but if you think about it, the entire Steve Rogers/Sharon Carter relationship is based on the completely awkward situation that she looks pretty much exactly like her aunt.

I also personally would like Bucky's return as The Winter Soldier in a sequel.  I don't think he is large-scale enough of an adversary to carry a film, so he could probably be an enforcer for a larger villain who switches sides midway through the film.

And hell, why not, introduce The Falcon.  Get him in there; his friendship with Cap has always been pretty good, not to mention that that would probably be the best way to fill the void of minority characters (save for the inevitable, obligatory, Sam Jackson Nick Fury cameo).

Well I don't know about the Avengers movie but for Caps next solo effort I would like to see Zemo, or maybe AIM and the villain with Winter Soldier lurking in the shadows and then as the main villain in CAP3. As for Sharon Carter I would love to see Hayley Atwell again because I thought she was perfectly cast as Peggy, and seeing more of her would be great.

Amanda Righetti is the woman that played the SHIELD Agent at the end of the Captain America movie.  She is not a super famoous actress, but he has been in a good number of movies and TV Shows.

So, my mney says she is going to be Sharon Carter.  Also IMDB has her casted as Sharon Carter in the Avengers movie so there you go.

@Cafeterialoca: I have to agree. I speculate from the movie studio's stand point, not mine that's for dang sure. I feel though they will go that route. I hope not! Yes, new villains, and there are PLENTY of them to choose from.

I am playing devil's advocate to a small degree but yeah, I can see a Cap sequel, just wondering the time frame involved. Hopefully we will never get our fill of More Merry Marvel Movies!

@Decept-O: I hope Red Skull doesn't show up in Avengers.  I WANT A NEW VILLAIN NOT OLD ONES!!!  Loki is enough old, but bring on the new!  The Avengers didn't assemble to take on their same villains again!
Really, I think a Cap sequel is great because there's more to explore.  It won't be a repeat of the first film and there's deeper themes.  Plus Cap speeches.  And let's be honest, people saw all three transformers, so if they make a sequel, they will come.

Zemo would be nice. Winter Soldier IS a possibility since Sebastian Stan is signed on for more flicks and Bucky has been 'experimented' upon before his escape and his 'death'. He could already have acquired some sort of super soldier capabilities that would help him survive that fall.

@Cafeterialoca: You have very valid points to say the least. I am just thinking in terms of audiences, though, would they want it much as the other movies you mentioned? I think for Green Lantern and Ghost Rider respectively, sequels are being made more or less to recoup some of the money spent on the first movies in their line-up. Just saying, I would like a Cap sequel, but just wondering really if Marvel would do it. You said they will but just haven't read anywhere if its official. Again, Diamondback would be great. Not to forget, there are many villains for Cap to go up against unless Red Skull returns ( probably in an Avengers movie though?). Its cool to speculate.

@Decept-O: A Cap sequel is almost guarenteed.  It did well in theaters, and that usually means sequel.  Hell, Green Lantern and Ghost Rider are getting sequels, and they did AWFUL.
Honestly, why does Marvel hate Diamondback so much?  She's awesome and spunky!  That's much cooler than Sharon Carter who is redundant with Black Widow and Mockingbird both doing what she does already.

I swear that that girl at the end of the Cap movie was Sharon Carter, she had a similar look to her so it almost has to be done I say. As for a villain, Baron Zemo all the way.  Have a separate Winter Soldier movie. And Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan was just great, really! Have him come back, please.

There will at least be one seque I belive.

It's been said by Kevin Feige and Joe Johnston that the Captain America movies will borrow heavily for Brubaker's run on Cap. We can expect Winter Soldier, I'm sure. Also, the return of Red Skull and Zola. Hydra may play a role but I have a feeling they'll be saved mostly for the planned Shield movie. Will General Alexander Lukin play a role? Doubtful, as super-soldier Red Skull defeats the purpose of possessed host Red Skull. Will the Winter Soldier in the films be a secret weapon of the Soviets? Also doubtful. It is possible, however, that Winter Soldier would be a secret weapon of Hydra. We know Hydra had something special planned for him, as he appeared to be strapped to some sort of "brainwashing" table when Steve found him. Only time will reveal what is to come from a Captain America sequel. As for now, I'm just gonna enjoy what Marvel Studios have given us fans already.

I'd love to see a Winter Soldier, considerin they already started the process, but I doubt it'd be in two. Three maybe, if it makes it that far~ ^_^

Also, accordin to IMDB Neil McDonough's already slated for the Nick Fury movie that's supposedly bein made. Whether that movie happens or not is questionable~

No other Cap villain could even compare to the Red Skull aside from either one of the Baron Zemo's or perhaps Adolf Hitler himself... And since the movie won't take place in the 40's Zemo should be the obvious choice. I can live with a costume redesign on his part, but aside from that if they stick close to his origin as an evil Nazi war-criminal with a vendetta against Captain America, I think it could work out... Or maybe it could be put as the plot of an Avengers sequel when he creates the Masters of Evil.
