What a Wonder Woman Movie Could and Should Look Like

Check out this fan-trailer for the type of Wonder Woman we'd all want to see.

We don't often post fan-films and trailers. Honestly, there are just so many of them. A lot of them are good. really good. It's just not something we normally focus that heavily on.

But we do make exceptions.

Check out this Wonder Woman "trailer" that just popped up.

The clip features Rileah Vanderbilt. You can find out more about her at her website.

Will we ever get a Wonder Woman feature film? After seeing this, we can only hope that will be the case.

Would you want to see a Wonder Woman movie like this?

This was awesome!

If you choose to post any more fan films, may I suggest that you show Judge Minty?

That was pretty cool. Especially liked the costume in the part set on Themyscira. A higher quality version of that would be the perfect Wonder Woman costume for the Justice League film.

Wouldn't really want to see that if it were the actual trailer. Nothing of substance or character to it. They mostly just compiled a bunch of shots they thought would look cool, seemingly not caring what they meant when put together. Just because they used decent lenses doesn't make this good.

It's a cute exercise in cinematography and CG work, but that's about it.

Eh... Considering it's fan made, it's nice. But superhero movies don't have a problem with flashy fight sequences. When superhero movies run into a problem it's because the acting/dialog/story is crap. This trailer doesn't have any of that, so saying that this is what a WW movie should be like isn't saying much.

It's like saying Man of Steel is at least a 4/5 just based on the trailers. I liked the movie, but we all know Tony's feelings on the matter.

For a fan-made thing, it looks really epic and shows a lot of potential.
It also has me thinking that not only are WB/DC being lazy about making a Wonder Woman movie, they're damn near incompetent at this point.

Not bad--for a fan film with a small budget. I especially like the costume.

The real thing to be proud of is that they kept the warrior roots and didn't try to change them them. It's a great image of a powerful heroine and not some sexed up version of her. She should be treated like the boys are. I don't see what's so hard about mixing Amazons and Urban fantasy without changing Wonder Woman. You don't need to make her a lawyer or make her pine over the hottest boy in high school or whatever BS.

This is Wonder Woman.

Looks like a typical superhero fan trailer. Good but nothing that impresses me.

Still, this just reminds me of the colossal mistake that WB/DC has done with Joss Whedon.

Not that great a trailer, but I approve of the costume. That would work well in a movie without attracting the swimsuit complaints.

Sums up my feelings nicely. I'm not really blown away by this trailer in the slightest. No proper dialogue, no exploration of Diana's character, just some flashy attempts at contrasting her place as a champion of Man's World and the mythical world too. And that isn't what's needed in making a good Wonder Woman film. It's OK but not really wonderful in my book.

Agreed. Although...for all the hype this short has been getting, I am really disappointed. First, I don't want to disparage the work put into it, which is considerable, and the people involved did this more as a labor of love than anything else, and I respect that.

But the tone is all wrong for Wonder Woman. What emotions am I supposed to feel? Is she supposed to be happy-go-lucky when she throws the spear at the Minotaur or completely emotionless when getting shot at? The music is obviously trying to sell this triumph, but I'm not feeling it. I would have appreciated some context.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but this felt just as soulless and muddled as the recent Clash of the Titans movies or the abominable 2011 Wonder Woman pilot (though the visuals and constuming obviously put the latter to shame).

@cmaprice: What were you expecting? It's a fan made trailer. The point was, if a fan made trailer has the right feel for the character that's what most fans would want to see.

I watched about half of the nbc show and almost puked. The disconnect of Hollywood is so vast from what is good and what they want us to think is good I can barely bring myself to the cinema.

The fights were a bit weak. The style and color seem to fit in MOS universe.

The problem with fan trailer is that it reminds me how much I want to see an actual WW movie... T_T

This is exactly what a Wonder Woman film needs----an emphasis on the story's roots in Greek Mythology. This should also be an aspect of the visual. It doesn't necessarily have to look like "300" or "Immortals", but looking like the recent remake of "Clash of the Titians" might work.

Not bad, I like the direction anyway. I have always wanted to see Wonder Woman in a 300 kind of view. I would say we will see it sometime in the next ten years.

And i also agree Im not big on Wonder Woman flying...I think they should just have Hermes gift her with the "grace of flight" or something...making her good on her feet..or making her in a way glide across the ground perhaps? idk.

It's very stylish and I am in awe at the level of production and enthusiasm, but it's all bam-bam-bam, beat 'em up. (In super slo-mo.) That's not Wonder Woman. Where's any hint of characterization in this? Where's a positive attitude? Where's a hint of plot, other than "stop the menace"? Wonder Woman is not Superman with boobs and a B&B gimmick. She's very different, very modern, very current events and positive empowerment, and her movie should reflect that. I know that flash 'n dazzle is all most people look for nowadays (see nuStar Trek, Star Wars 1-3, and the latest Superman), and if that dazzle is very dark, oh boy, the fanboys love it or TPTB think they do. But that's not Wonder Woman. I want Wonder Woman.

It looks like we're all agreed (mostly, at least) that they did a solid job with the costume design. We finally get to see a practical Wonder Woman outfit that still holds true to the original aesthetics. I think that's really cool. But let's not kid ourselves about this being some off-the-cuff fan-made video. No, it's not a licensed DC product (you can tell, because it hasn't caused open war on the internet yet). But the production studio, Rainfall TV out of Los Angeles, can do better than this. They have done better. This project's been hyped on Twitter and their site for months at this point and the promo shots they release were superb. But in the end they churned out a poorly rendered FX demo reel with no story. It's a bit of a letdown. Nah...it's a massive letdown. I thought we had something here.

On the upside, we now know it can be done: it's possible to put Wonder Woman on the screen without her looking like a hooker. There's just enough Greek armour in that costume and enough badass in those Amazons to make Themyscira believable. All that's lacking is writing...so for those of you who haven't already, check out Scott Lynch's proposed shot-breakdown for the opening scene of a Wonder Woman film (http://scottlynch.us/blog/2013/06/26/in-the-wake-of-man-of-steel-a-timely-proposal/). Read it, and visualize Rainfall's aesthetic (minus that godawful flight scene...), and then join us in kicking DC's tires until they wake up and realize that this is something that's both doable and desired by superhero enthusiasts at large.

"You can't do better" is the last refuge of an artistic failure. Most people are criticizing this for the lack of tone. Would it have killed them to hire a mature voice actor to deliver a few platitudes as Hippolyta? Even something generic like:

"When you came into the world, I watched the rain washed away the clay from your skin. You were so small then, I was afraid the rain may wash you away, too. Before my eyes I watched you grow into the fiercest warrior of all the Amazons. Now the storms of war have reached our shores and that same fear finds me. Fear that Man's world will take you from me. And before my eyes, you prove me wrong again. I am so proud of you, Diana."

It was great. I have always said that the Wonder Woman film should be like Thor. 1/2 on the island and with Amazons and the mythology stuff and 1/2 in our world. Her "costume" should be traditional amazon armor. It would be awesome.

My thoughts:

  • Well this is very Nolan-esque.
  • Faceless goons aren't really faceless enough.
  • What are these guys supposedly doing other than waiting to get beat up? What are the stakes here other than a single burning street sign. Is Wonder Woman going to kill some dudes for petty vandalism and generic costuming?
  • Diana's costume looks decent. Nothing revolutionary. Could be a recolored Xena getup for all I know.
  • The deflected bullet seemed incidental. I'd trade a great deal of this seriousness for camp if it meant we could see WW actually deflect bullets, even with Lynda Carter-era effects.
  • Strange transition.
  • Why are the other amazons dressed in silk?
  • Why aren't they fighting as well? Why just hand the spear to Diana?
  • Okay we're back fighting these poor losers. What if they were just walking down the street with guns for the hell of it?
  • Finally a real deflection, and now she's looking at a light, where'd the mook go, okay now she's flying, okay this whole thing is like a bad anime intro slowed down a lot.

Good costume, liked the inclusion of the mythic stuff but it was too deliniated. I would've preferred her fighting a "hellenistic" era monster in the city than random switching between fighting street level mooks and being back on the island. I would ditch the slow-mo and long pause and music for something with more action and excitement, but I guess that takes both scrilla and voice acting. This seemed more like a moving photoshoot.

I don't mean to be overly harsh, but the headline was right to say merely "look like" because that's all this really delivered on. That's not enough for me to be excited. Wonder Woman needs to be developed character and narrative first or it will fail and everyone will shrug and say "I guess we were right and female super heroes can't succeed" and I will grind my teeth. Great production though, to be sure. Thanks for making it and putting it out there for us!

Pretty cool, better than expected. The CW should take notes compared to what they were planning with the character. I would actually watch something like this. I think it be smart to go in the Xena combined with todays world direction!

I honestly can't believe anyone thinks this is good. I mean, I appreciate the effort by the people involved, but the only people who would be even remotely interested in this are fanboys. I suppose, considering the site this is on, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it is warmly received.

The females needed a little more psychical look then that, they are Amazonians you know.

@decept_o: I wasn't saying that you were an artistic failure, at all. I was saying that when anyone creates something that isn't well-received, the defenders of the work will try to turn the argument back on critics rather than actually defend the merits of the work (especially when the merits are few).

By the way, I also wish we could all enjoy something, but this isn't it. The hype for this was "we're going to do Wonder Woman right!", but it looks like a trailer for an Asylum film without the story. Hope springs eternal for a good serious take on Wonder Woman in the vein of the animated feature film from a few years back.

@dorsk188:

For one, I never said what you wrote. You took what I wrote and completely changed it into something else and took it out of context.

I am not "turning" anything back on the critics.

This was a FAN MADE TRAILER. It wasn't a movie. It was a short clip.

How much "story" or character development can one expect with this?

This actually is getting more positive comments than negative ones by the way.
