'Watchmen' Deleted Hollis Mason Death Scene

Check out one of the many deleted scenes from the 'Watchmen' director's cut

One of the most powerful scenes that we encountered in the ' Watchmen' graphic novel, and possibly one of the most graphic, is the scene where we see the first ' Nite Owl' get beaten to death by a gang of men. This scene which was considered by many to be one of the most powerful and moving, was removed from the final version of the film. With the release of the Director's cut, we finally have the opportunity to see this scene played out. The scene comes after Dan Dreiberg (the second ' Nite Owl'). As Mason fights them off, he reminisces the days where he was a renowned hero. It is sad, and also somewhat interesting that the film makers decided to remove this particular scene from the final version of the film. I am glad, however, that on July 21st, we will have the opportunity to see much of what was missing from the film that was so vital to the graphic novel. What do you guys think? Did you feel that the scene was very powerful? Do you find it strange that the scene was not in the final cut of the film? Do you think it should have been?

It is Cavalerria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni. It is also used in Raging Bull and Godfather part 3

I want to watch this so bad, in fact I started it but stopped it. I wanna watch it with the rest of the movie, I can't believe they cut out such an important part.

The best scene so far where they beat up an elderly to death, you don't see much of that nowadays

The movie was already too long, due to gratuitous slo-mo shots that lasted 5 minutes each.

completely agree, I thought the beginning was like a joke or something at first. I dont think it needed to be cut from the film, minus the thugs, but its definitely missing something that the same scene in the graphic novel had. Ill still get the directors cut though lol

It bothered me that Hollis’s death was cut from the theatrical version, because it’s such a significant moment in Watchmen, the golden age hero being beaten to death by the new destructive generation. But other than the topknot gang’s awkward dialogue this was filmed really well, and I look forward to seeing the rest of the Directors Cut.

Sorry, but this bothered me. It was Dan Dreiberg (the second 'Nite Owl') who broke Rorschach out of prison, not Hollis Mason.

Great scene though, even if the slow-mo is a bit much.... and as mentioned, the knot-tops' dialogue was the worst ever.

I'm looking forward to the directors cut of this film. The Cinema version was technicaly very very good but it just left me with no strong feeling at all. I've pretty much forgotten it now. The comic however i will always remember. And this is one of my fave scenes

What the hell is Zach Snyder's problem. Having Mason actually being able to defend himself takes away the point of that scene. It wasn't meant to show that he still has it, it was meant to show that he's not a superhero anymore and that they're beating up some frail old man. But of coarse like Micheal Bay's explosion quota, Zach Snyder's need to put as much slow motion in a movie as possible had to be met.

I never really understood why they decided to leave this scene out, it just seemed so out of place to introduce Hollis and then do absolutely NOTHING with that character on screen, but now I'm really excited for the re-release of Watchmen. The first time I saw Watchmen the motion picture I went in with a bias
and found it missing all of Watchmens' special elements namely the secondary characters you develop a connection with over the course of the novel, (which gave the books ending that lingering "umph".) But now with watchmens re-release I can leave my bias at the door and try to apreciate it as a film on its own.

I wish it was part of the movie.  To me that was one of the most important things that happen in Watchmen comic.  I glad it's going to be on the Director cut DVD verison.

Whole clip made me cringe, and not in a good way.  Another example of how the director failed to capture the essence of the book.  Please forgive us Alan Moore.

Having the absence of music at the end just amplifies the violence. Thats a sad scene, but the film needs it i think.

As much as it sucks that Hollis dies like this, it bummed me out when they said they cut this scene from the film.

I also believe July 13th is when they release the director's cut in the theatre in certain major cities - NYC,Dallas, & L.A. and think there were 2 more.

I really wish they would have put that in the movie. In the book, that scene was so powerful and it also showed you that even Night Owl II can get pissed off. if you werent feeling for the characters before this soon, you without a doubt would have been now, I just wish they would have kept it in
