Vote For The New Marvel Universe Figure

Vote often, vote early for the figure you think should be made.

Thanks to Leokearon for pointing this one out to us!
Last year, Marvel released an exclusive Nick Fury figure to new subscribers to Marvel's Online Comics and to quote Marvel:

fans far and wide went bananas

These little Marvel figures, roughly the same size as 80s G.I. Joe figures, are a big hit in the collector community, and now Marvel is letting the fans decide who the next figure should be. There are three choices for the possible upcoming character.

How does he hide those things?
How does he hide those things?
The first is Archangel (pictured right) in his most recent costume, from the current volume of X-Force.
We've seen a few Angel figures in the past, but few Archangel figures, other than the Toy Biz one from the 90s, and the one from the canceled X-Men line in the early 00s. This would be the first version of this figure in this suit.

HAMMER-TIME
HAMMER-TIME
The second choice is Norman Osborn in his H.A.M.M.E.R. outfit (pictured left). To the best of my knowledge, this will be the first Osborn figure, aside from the numerous Green Goblin's that have come out in the past. Norman has gone through so many changes in the past two years that I'm not even sure if this is worth it.

No Caption Provided
The third (pictured right) and final choice is Moonstone in her Ms. Marvel outfit, a first for this character... pretending to be another character. This voting round seems to have a darker character element to it, maybe setting up possible "dark themes and stories" taking place in Marvel in the next couple of years.

What's one figure I think should have been made a long time ago? Stilt-Man! Make it a build-a-figure, I don't care. Just do it!

What figures do you guys want to see in an upcoming series? Who are you going to VOTE for?

~Mat Elfring (inferiorego) is a comedian, teacher, comic book writer, comic store employee and Stilt-Man's only fan~

You're right, Universe is geared toward children...and it shows. These sculpts are often subpar, there's a heavy focus on modern costumes and characters, include little to no accessories, and they're overpriced! Hence why many collectors don't care much for this line! It's been controversial with the comic collector community from the get go considering few wanted Legends to fall to the wayside. If you like this line, more power to you, but that doesn’t change the fact that many (if not the majority of) other collectors don’t. I can point you to three or four Marvel collectors forums that are in constant bashing Universe mode, if you like, just to prove that I don’t “speak for a mass that doesn’t agree with me”.

Universe is selling better than Legends has since Hasbro took the license, and certainly better than when Toy Biz. Do you know why? Toy Biz had horrendously inconsistent distribution. Whole Legends waves, especially pre-Galactus series, would pass without notice as Toy Biz proved unable to get enough figures to market and get them there on time. By the time the final Toy Biz wave (the Modok wave) came out, they were again very difficult to find with regularity.

How is a 4" figure at $7 overpriced versus a 6.5" figure at $14?

Want to talk about facts? I’ll show you them. Fact: Three Waves of Marvel Legends, one wave of three two-packs, SDCC KaZar and Shanna exclusive, and a few other exclusives were released in 2008. One wave on Marvel Legends and one series of three two-packs was released in 2009. Marvel Universe Series 1 was officially release in March of 2009 and in conception stages in mid to late 2008. Now read that slowly and look for a pattern. If “Marvel Legends was already sunk by the time Universe was released,” …well…what do you call all these Legends figures then? And notice the significant drop in production of Legends once Universe was in concept, then an even larger drop in production once Universe was in circulation. Now I don’t doubt that the late Legends series sales were poor, but there’s a difference between lousy sales and a dead line. Legends could have been salvaged. Arguably the only reason it began to crash was because, for some bizarre reason, Hasbro decided to tamper with a winning figure formula. To deny that Universe had something to do with the demise of Marvel Legend is…well…to be in denial. Hasbro chose to let the Legends line die in favor of pushing out this new line.

You have the chain of causality reversed, I'm afraid. If anything, Universe arose because Legends was selling so poorly and big retailers like Target and Wal Mart didn't want a bunch of huge figures taking up shelf space that never sold because they were $15 a piece. The only way Legends could've been salvaged is if they found a way to make them a lot cheaper, which wasn't happening considering the price of oil. You want to talk about a drop in quality? They would've had to be basically motionless blocks of plastic to cut the costs that would've been necessary, with even shoddier paint apps.

Meanwhile, Hasbro had just relaunched a tremendously successful GI Joe line in the 4" scale that was much cheaper and had comparable articulation and quality to the Toy Biz Marvel Legends. They saw their opportunity to save on costs by using less plastic and the same machinery and distribution for the smaller figures, make Wal Mart and Target happy, and still serve the superhero action figure market. I wish that whiny Legends obsessives like you would realize how ridiculous they sound, demanding that Hasbro and Marvel do the impossible because they feel they're entitled to a particular toy, no matter how well it sells.

I'm going to sound fanboy rantish, I don't care! This line should have never killed Marvel Legends. It's been said a million times, but it's such a downgrade from Legends. In fact, I just miss Toybiz on the line to begin with. They were infinitely better in all aspects: character choices, costume choices, lower price, more articulation, better scale, and more accessories. I mean, one of these nearly costs the same as an old Toybiz Legend that’s twice the size, twice as details, and includes twice the amount you’re getting here! These are such rip-offs. Not a single one of these character choices screams “I have to have!” and I hate Hasbro’s focus on modern outfits.   "

Nonsense. For one thing, there are still new Marvel Legends releases - two packs that are exclusive to Toys R Us. More importantly, Legends died the mass retail death because
a) their price point was skyrocketing; they were originally around $7 and now sell for around $12-15 in single packs!
b) they took up more shelf space, so giants like Target and Wal-Mart naturally gravitated towards smaller offerings

The price point on the 3 3/4" figures on the other hand has actually stabilized or gone down, although they're still more expensive than the original Marvel Legends in most cases. The newer Marvel Universe figures actually have excellent sculpts (Thor, Hawkeye, Ultron, Warpath, Electro, and the new Iron Man 2 lines), at least as good or better than many of the Legends line (which had its fair share of stinkers). Legends had better sculpts and paint apps over all, but while the Legends were getting worse in their last few years, Universe is getting better. Plus, these are in scale with GI Joe, Star Wars, and other popular lines. They're small enough that they can produce vehicles and playsets for them. They can release more of them per year than the Legends, and we are already getting character choices that would never have seen a Legends scale figure.

Aside from the glut of Spider-Man repaints and the blank, expressionless faces on the female action figures (something Legends had a big problem with as well), it's hard not to like the Universe line.

I really like that look of  norman osborn picture  with an emraled shield suit holding his mask like he is about to pit it on which would be a moment I am kinda waiting for soon as he falls from  his governmental power and takes his last stand as the green goblin of shield against someone for the last fight maybe.

Sure you'll see adult folks that like Universe, I don't hate all Universe either, but you'll also see...I'm not speaking for myself. Not even close! Also check the dates on ML's and Universe figures. More so, what's your point? And were is this proof you're claiming to have? I've now backed my argument, have you?

no, not actually. they had several lines of Marvel Legends under Hasbro before they switched over.
they switched over because they werent selling. they were cluttering clearance aisles and being repacked by toy stores and sent back to the company for credit. believe it or not despite your own love for the Toy Biz ones they also crashed and burned. the fact was they were geared towards collectors, and that market doesnt hold water to young kids. the MU line was more appropriate for kids however, as well allows them to do playsets and vehicles now. that and theyre compatible with other figures like Star Wars and GIJOE.

Universe absolutely had a part to play in the destruction of Marvel Legends.

Universe came after Legends already sunk, that was kind of the point. im saying this as fact. i
managed a Toys R Us at the time and dealt with it first hand. i taped up, boxed and shipped those full sized Legends figures back personally.

They forced something into the faces of Legends collectors, something we’d been dreading for quite some time. And while it’s true that Legends isn’t entirely dead, considering this year we’re supposed to get…what? Six figures, three two-packs, I’d say that’s life-support.

thats because again the collectors cant sustain a toy companies needed profits. kids do. collectors
are over-ruled. compound this with the fact that Disney upon taking over considered pulling the license from Hasbro in favor of the company they own, Mattel. this put Hasbro in a position where they really have to look at quantity, something that was always present though, and make certain numbers every year. not easy in a market that only turns a real profit during the holiday season, and in a world where Toys R Us is going bankrupt. and the majority of collectors outside of yourself actually like the universe figures, check this site even, and my Image Galeries. your speaking for a mass that doesnt actually agree with you.

As for Selects, they're neither a spin-off of the Legends line, nor Hasbro, but it's own line so...what do they have anything to do with much of anything here? Besides, they're more McFarlane style figures, not remotely like even Hasbro's Legends. They're more statues

having your own opinion is one thing and fine by me, but your just making things up again in this case just to argue. Select is a direct continuation of the Toy Biz Legends line, sculpted by Dig, the exact same sculpture that did those. it was moved to the collectors market specifically becuase it couldnt meet the units required to sustain a kids toyline, and renamed so as to avoid any difficulty with Toy Biz. "

Nice novel! Yawn!

I'm stating no in reference to the Universe line not effecting the death of the Legends line.  I don't think anyone would argue that Hasbro dropped the ball as compared to Toybiz offerings.

As for Marvel Select, what exactly am I lying about? Firstly the Select line has ALWAYS been aimed at nothing but collectors. Secondly, because Select now has sculptors that prior worked on Legends for Toybiz DOESN'T make Select and Legends the same line, hence different names to begin with. That's like saying Schindlers List must be in the same universe as Indiana Jones because Spielburg worked on them both. Um...no! Select  was a very complementary line with Legends, but they weren't actually of the same.

I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing, you're fanboyishly defending plastic toys. And congrats on working at Toys R Us, mommy must be proud.

@CATMANEXE: Just to add a little more to your points. Universe came out at least 2 or 3 years after Legends started out at Hasbro. I think this line is pretty solid and a big step up from Hasbro's Legends line.

Agreed... The problem was Hasbro picking up the license. Once they lost Jesse Falcon from Toy Biz, all hell broke loose.

@Illuminarch:
pretty much.
the Fury was already made as well.  it was a mail-in exclusive.
kind of wrecks the value of that one if they release it in the general lines.
sadly thats what happens with them all, as well the ones who dont get voted for
just get released in a different line. theyre not going to waste the money they spent on
molding the figures. the Warpath figure went that route for example.

I would want Stilt-Man though…    but as a Marvel Legend! I don't want to get suckered into buying lower-quality smaller versions of characters I already have as Legends. I sound so miserable, but so many of us collectors hate this line. Getting much needed characters like (comic) Ultron, Enchantress, the Wrecking Crew, and 90's Jean Grey  as Universe figures and not Legends is a kick in the face.

Oh! The 00's X-Men Classics (ML spin-off line) Archangel was released, I own it.

What a terrible field. Every one of these are just repaints with, maybe, a slight head tweak. No doubt that Norman will use the Fury/SHIELD agent body, and they've already produced Ms. Marvel and Archangel (Archangel is yet to be released) figures. Hasbro is laaaazy.

As much as the Moonstone one would be good I think Norman would be the most interesting figure to have out there, I didn't say Archangel because I doubt they would do the wings big enough for me, would look good all the same though.

I have several from this line of figures and I have to say-- they're fairly disappointing. The detail isn't nearly what it should be for what they charge, mostly due to scale. I wish they'd release more Diamond Select. They're great display pieces and for the price of two of the little guys that often have very awkward articulation and messy paint jobs, relatively worth it.
