Vertigo Releases Information on Neil Gaiman's Return to SANDMAN

The wait for a new SANDMAN story ends this October.

A year ago at San Diego Comic-Con, DC/Vertigo announced that Neil Gaiman would be returning to SANDMAN in a brand-new miniseries with J.H. Williams III doing the art. Shelly Bond, Executive Editor of Vertigo, revealed some new information.

THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE will contain an previously untold story in THE SANDMAN mythos. The first issue will be oversized and is on sale October 30, which makes it over ten years since Gaiman ended the series. The series will be bi-monthly and feature covers by Dave McKean. During the alternating bi-monthly months, Vertigo will release THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE Special Edition. These deluxe issues will contain Gaiman's original scripts, concept art and sketches by Williams as well as Q&As with the creative team. The first deluxe issue is on sale in November.

If you read the series, you should recall Morpheus was captured at the beginning. This story will explore his world before he was captured.

“This is the one story that we never got to tell,” Gaiman told The New York Times today. “In SANDMAN #1 Morpheus is captured somehow. Later on in the series, you learn he was returning from somewhere far, far away - but we never got to the story of what he was doing and what had happened. This is our chance to tell that story, and J.H. Williams III is drawing it. It’s the most beautiful thing in the world.”

More details and artwork will be revealed at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The cover of this year's Comic-Con souvenir book will also feature new SANDMAN art by Dave McKean which will also be featured on an official convention t-shirt.

Update

J.H. Williams updated his blog with the proper colored version of the first issue.

I'm very O.K. with this. :)

Edited: Except it means J.H. Williams probably won't be back drawing Batwoman for a while. :/

What? No way.

So cool. I wish that everyone at DC would give Hall his own series. Or at least use him.

@jonny_anonymous: it should be about Vertigo's releases, not just Sandman.

Eh, I couldn't get past the first two volumes of the original series, wasn't my cup of tea.

@jonny_anonymous:

Hopefully he'll be doing something for DCU. Didio likes him.

Well there's V for Vertigo but that seems to be dead.

I've listened to a Hellblazer one recently which had Delano, Diggle, Milligan and David Lloyd if you're interested in that.

It would be a crazy book if it's in the actual DCU, have you read any in his novels?

Yea have you got a link?

Deluxe editions? Sounds like stuff that should be saved for the collection that DC throwing out to try and grab every little cent from this series as they can. Still, at least they aren't putting that material in the regular editions and forcing everyone who doesn't care about the added stuff to buy the extra content. Also not thrilled about bi-monthly but when it's a short running limited series anyway it's not the same kind of inconvenience that the Marvel double shipping is. Hopefully I'll have the resources to pick this up. The quality of the creative team is impressive.

Good lord...I'm...speechless at the beauty and splendor I see with this. October cannot come soon enough!

Can't wait. Still.....kinda wish this story would have been about Daniel instead of Morpheus.

Vertigo is pretty much the reason I love comics as a medium, don't get me wrong I love me some superhero comics but there's something about the freedom of original ideas for story, characters, universe, and design that allow for writers and artists to flex there creative muscles. Most of the top creators in the business best work are not the titles under superhero imprints. Their most creative efforts have been under Vertigo/Image and a handful of other publishers or even independent.

For awhile there it was looking bleak for Vertigo as a company (à la Karen Berger's exit / Dan Didio comments) but a press release like this give me renewed hope.

I hope Delirium will make an appearances

HOW MUCH IS THIS?!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!? PLS LET IT BE $2.99
