UPDATE: Jim Lee Redesigns Every Major DC Character in Mass Reboot

Geoff Johns and Jim Lee finally team up for Justice League of America #1, just one of 51 new #1 titles from DC this September.

The majority of comic fans would probably agree that this has been a long time coming. Chief Creative Officer of DC comics Geoff Johns and DC's Co-Publisher Jim Lee will finally be teaming up for a relaunch of an all new Justice League of America book this September--the first of 50 new issues that will relaunch and re-number every title in the entire DC Universe.

No Caption Provided

Yes, you read that correctly; DC is revamping all of their characters--re-numbering all their titles and giving everyone a brand new costume. DC's very own co-publisher will not only be penciling the all new Justice League of America; but he will also be overseeing all of the costume re-designs at DC Comics. The hope is that the costumes will reflect new, modernized versions of these classic DC characters. It seems DC is not only looking to boot Marvel from the coveted #1 spot, but also to garner a wider, younger audience. According to DC's Co-Publisher Dan Didio, DC's characters will be changing with the times.

== TEASER ==

"We looked at what was going on in the marketplace and felt we really want to inject new life in our characters and line...This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today's audience."

The decision to change the appearance of all their major characters comes at a rather convenient time, too. Between the bad press Wonder Woman's costume received from her series reboot as well as her failed television pilot to the current law-suit threatening to split Superman in two. The image released by DC indicates some big changes to the costume designs of their most classic characters. Superman's chest insignia, for example has been re-vamped, and notice that in the image he isn't wearing the red briefs over his blue tights. Wonder Woman's costume also appears to be more streamlined, losing the jacket and gaining a smaller logo.

The big question on everyone's mind is, just how much will they change? The change will obviously be coming after Flashpoint, so what will it mean for the history of all these classic characters? Will we see new interpretations of all characters across the board? Will this bold move help DC increase their fanbase, or alienate comic readers? What do you think of the new costumes?

UPDATE

Here is the first image of Jim Lee and Geoff John's  all new Justice League.

No Caption Provided

Also, the latest rumor cites that post Flashpoint, things will change- which might include the relationship status of two of DC's most iconic characters. The latest post Flashpoint rumor cites Superman and Wonder Woman getting together- at least that's what they're claiming at Bleeding Cool. What would happen to Lois Lane? Do you think DC would pull a stunt like this? Is this something you would like to see written into continuity?

P.S.- We sort of called it on the reboot thing.

Jim Lee makes all the new costumes wayyy to shiny with too many metallic pieces. he's trying way too hard to make them look "cool"
some of the costumes look really bad like robin and superboy

They've ditched the Justice Society of America. No more JSA, no more Power Girl, and Hawkman and Mr Terrific no longer seem to have any association with the Golden Age. That's it for me. No more DC.

The renumbering is the only thing I'm not being able to get. Wonder Woman was renumbered to 600 recently, showcasing the total number of WW comics over the years. Batman, Superman, Action & Detective Comics have been running in their near 900s and even Adventure Comics is renumbered to 500 etc. Wouldn't it have made a lot more sense to renumber all the other titles according to continuity like GL or Flash. These titles have over 400 issues in their belt. JLA should have that amount too.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?

I dont know if it's been said, but this can simply be summed up easily.

If this turns out good, who will have made it work? Us. Not the theoretical swathes of fans D.C. think they'll get, but we all know they won't. When will they start making new fans put effort in to get into comics, instead of spoon feeding fans that don't even exist?

It's all good having a jump-on point, but if people have been to lazy to get into comics before, why would a jump-on point help? Jumping on at issue #1 is one thing, but staying on is another. If they're too lazy to get into existing comics, why would they put effort into this?

They should've just created an Ultimates line. Not everything needs a reboot. Frank Miller didn't reboot Daredevil, he simply wrote the shit out of that character and reDEFINED it in a way that lasted until Shadowland.

you know the more I look at Wonder Woman's new costume the more I like it.....should've just let it gone over it and let it sink in over time instead of acting on my initial reaction.

Batman looks like the All-Star Batman.....
Aqua Man looks the same to me.
Superman and Wonder Women look like they're 15...
Cyborg..... uhhhhh still Cyborg haha
Green Lantern at least doesn't have that cheesy suit from the movie.
And Flash was the only descent one to me.

maybe if they didn't make a huge event every 5 seconds it would give new readers time to get into the stories and get everything strait up, but starting everything from the b egining is WTF !!! they can change the costumes thats not a probleme but start the stories from the begining???!!!!!
anyways thats just my opinion

I like the way all the characters look except for Cyborg. He still looks kind of stupid to me. But I hope they dont split up Superman and Lois. Have Wonder Woman with someone like Batman or Aquaman

Oh man. I'm so happy they're doing a new JLI like they planned, and including the Great Ten characters is brilliant. I'm a little worried that I don't see any Blue Beetle. I'm kind of hoping we'll get a Jaimie Reyes as BB, but coached by a still-very-much-alive Ted Kord. The fact that I don't see him on there worries. me. Also, I wonder if that's Bruce as Batman. I wouldn't mind Dick being a second Batman (one man 'Batman Inc') right from the start, with Tim as Nightwing and Damien as Robin.

On Booster Gold, I'm worried, because 1) I really liked his current costume and I'm not keen on this updated one, and 2) I'm hoping they don't throw away his new "secret master of time" status quo.

This just seems like yet another DESPERATE attempt by DC to beat out MARVEL, and by the looks of this stuff, Marvel still doesnt have anything to worry about.
DC needs to stop trying to make its characters look cooler, and make some interesting stories.
Aside from BATMAN & SUPERGIRL, and a few others, lately it seems like most of DC's cast have the lamest stories going on.
They shouldve just tried to keep JUSTICE LEAGUE (UNLIMITED) on tv.

When I heard this during the last night of May I was in a mourning fuming process I'm still unsure about this but I just hope DC knows what they're doing with this decision.

@Mach: I think titles like T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, Batman Beyond, and Xombi will be safe because they're still in less than 10 issues, and have very little tie to the main continuity. DC did say that some titles would stay.

OK I get the Relaunch and everything kind of like  a blank canvis to a painter , but how is this going to effect titles like Freedom Force  , Thunder Agent & Batman Inc. or is DC Comics feeling a knee jerk reaction , because of Marvel Comics "Do Over." and it's mild sucess with non-comic book readers , DC does not have to keep up with the Jones, because they are the Jones , if  a Reboot is need it let see some crossover JLA & Astro City  ,or  more WIld Cats , Mighty Crusaider , so my question is  what going to happen and is it going to be a good thing ?

Now being a fan of the Justice League - I've grown up reading the various incarnations of the Justice League - YET - how can any artist justify such changes to characters? If you look at the art carefully - Batman has gauntlets with some type of cap over his knuckles. The utility belt has been slightly changed as well, yet it looks almost like the new design is going to somehow incorporate almost an armor type design almost like that of Batman Begins movie-Esq. Why?
Superman not only in the image above do we see the briefs gone but, if you look carefully you'll also notice a disproportionate mid-section to lower section. Scrutinize it !
Then you have Green Lantern who on his shoulders appears to have some kind of armor on there - at least Jim Lee was being kind, and not making Green Lantern look like Ryan Reynolds. Which brings up a whole 'nother issue of the up coming Green Lantern movie.
Cyborg - what's with the chin design? It's not too unusual that he gets a redesign, but still . . .
Aquaman - back to the original design from the looks of things. Wonder Woman - it seems anyone who is considered an artist has the ability to redraw her due to their artistic interpretation.
Guns 'N' Roses said it best - What we have here is failure to communicate !
DC wants to be the "NEW" Marvel and trying to reach a new audience by alienating the old audience.

First off let me say that comics change shit left and right, some times it's for the better sometimes it sucks.  But I do not trust this reboot.
A. The idea sounds like how comics changed in the 90's by adding new life into the comics by changing the image of the charters to breath more life in to them, than rather what has been going on in the past decade of breathing more life into the stories,
B. I do not trust Bob Harras .  When DC announced that he would be head editor, I was reminded of how he totalitarianism of  butchering the X-Men titles in the mid to late 90's and I feel that  is what is going on  here.
C. There have been some off the rocker changes in the DCU with Grant Morrison work, and the Light War. In my opinion those premises have not even been fully explored and it would be a crime not only to comics but to writing in general to not let those ideas be explored and to grow.

"You know, as someone who grew up reading DC comics, I find this sad. One thing I really enjoyed about DC, and that distinguished it from Marvel, was its legacy characters. I found it intriguing that there were several generations of characters, Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, then Wally West or Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, then Kyle Rayner. I thought it was really neat, and added (sic) a sense of history to the DC Universe. To me, Marvel had continuity to keep track of, DC had history.  "

I think that summed it up quite well.

I realize that the characters belong to DC and they want/need to make money with them.  But a total reboot runs the risk of telling older readers that the time and money (and the dozen + boxes of DC comics that I've bought & have in storage) were a wasted investment.

They are getting less and less of my money as time goes on. But I won't be introducing a younger generation to them.  If I want to read something to my nephew I'll dig out an old battered Captain Carrot (he's the right age for that), but the heck with the new stuff.

I don't care that X has a costume change. But the constant reboots make it not worth bothering.

New Coke anyone?

None taken. I'm surprised I was the first. What I'm hoping to see is a Martian Manhunter series. The other 5 core Brightest Day characters got one! (Well, Deadman only kind of got one, but still!)

I'm sad that Judd Winick won't be writing JLI after he did Generation Lost.

I wonder how this will affect the less-prominent characters in the DC universe (Captain Atom and the core JLI members, Static and the rest of the Milestone universe, the Great Ten, Shadowpact, etc....)

After all, it seems as if the major characters are the only ones getting the reboot.

Im going to be optimistic about this.  Im sure that Geoff and Jim know what they're doing.  I know that the internet is the land of snap judgements, that everyone is quick to deride it when the reboot isnt for another two months.  If I don't like it, then that will be that.  Im not going to say something like "WTF how can they do this to us, I'm dropping comics forever blah blah blah."  I can always buy trades of stories I do like, or find other things to read.  Its not the end of the world.  I like the current legion title, and if it ends I'll probably be upset, but I already have the first trade, I plan on buying the second one and the great darkness saga.  There is a plethora of back stuff for us if we can't get into the new stuff.
