Uncanny X-Men Series Ends in October

What will cause the original X-Men series to come to an end?

No Caption Provided

All good things must come to an end. Today Marvel has announced that in October, we will se the end of an era. Uncanny X-Men will conclude with issue #544.

Starting back in 1963, the series originally just had the title X-Men. It was in 1980, half way through the Days of Future Past storyline where the series changed to Uncanny X-Men with issue #142.

The first run of the series was actually canceled in 1970 due to low sales but rather than completely end, previous issues were reprinted. This lasted until 1975 when Chris Claremont wrote Giant-Size X-Men which introduced the new team (with characters such as Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, etc) and continued in X-Men #94.

WIth the upcoming SCHISM story, there will be a divide in the X-Men and one of the results will be the end of this series. Said to be years in the making, when the dust settles, the state of mutantkind will be irreparably changed forever.

It's unfortunate that the original X-Men series is ending. Uncanny X-Men #544 is on sale this October. It will be written by Kieron Gillen with pencils and cover by Greg Land.

I am not suprised Uncanny X-Men is coming to end. The title has suck for years, ever since Matt Fraction took over. The stories were bad, the direction the title was going in was bad. Matt fraction is worst writer I've  ever came across. Like stories, like Loverlorn, have Colossus mourn over kitty and  have him help some helpless women or  the story Nation X, the crap with the void and having Magneto on his knees hailing Cyclops as  Caesar, what a load of BS.

Terry Dodson what a horrible artists, gotten make Emma Frost and the other X-Women looks beautiful, while the men look horrible.
Greg Land, let's do some copy and pasting and lets make the characters too happy, so there no real emotional behind them. I am suprise Marvel lets X-Men be run by these horrible writers and artists.
What's point of having the original X-Men on the front cover, Iceman and Angel won't be in the spotlight and definitely not Jean and Beast. They should just have Cyclops. He is the main focus, him or Emma

This story Schism, the whole idea of dividing them up, sounds like a bad idea. I can tell you what's going to happen, once they are divided up. The Mutants who side with Wolverine, in the end , there going realise it was a mistake to side with Wolverine, just to make Cyclops look good.  Just like they did with Charles character, make him  untrustworthy, so Cyclops could take over.
Remember what they did on Buffy the vampire slayer, the potentials chose Faith to lead them, over Buffy and she almost got them killed and Buffy save them  and regain leadership, same thing is going to happen in X-Men.

Why on Earth idn't they end it on a landmark issue like #450 which would have been only a few months later?

This is so obvious.  Cancel Uncanny X-Men, launch something else, then rename that Uncanny X-Men and renumber it to #450 later on.

However, I really am saddened by this news.  They should have just handed the series over to a decent creative team instead of cancelling it.  It's going out on an all time low.  Although not surprising, it's disappointing to see Marvel resort to these sorts of tactics.

"
You can say that to Axel Alonso and Joe Quesada!
they seem to hate brand names(see spideraman).

It seems rather odd, to me at least, that they ending "Uncanny X-Men" so that they can launch their NEW series... "Uncanny X-Men."

So, they change the volume and reset the number?  Does this really change ANYTHING?

Name change, number change. I'll be expecting a few of these to occur in the future.

The series will come back under a different name and a slightly different direction after the Schism and after a few years they will probably change the name back along with the numbering.

There is nothing I can say that every single X-Fan isn't suffering through already.
The house of recycled ideas have failed horribly at maintaining one of their greatest titles.

I could be wrong, but i dont think this will last long. I really hate it when comics start all over with #1 only to have the same kind of stories happening anyway.

Okay, what is with the Land bashing?  I mean seriously.  He is not a crap artist.  Why because he doesn't draw crap that looks childish?  His art looks clean, and good.  Do you people have a book?  No. Get over yourselves.  Sorry, not everyone looks boxy like Romita Jr.

I get that it is a crap decision to cancel Uncanny, but I mean how many X-Men books really need to be out there?  X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, X-Men Legacy....and that's not even counting the other books that bear the X name.  It's a little bit much.

Should they cancel the longest of the series?  no.  But does something have to go, yes.

@xerox-kitty: Have to disagree with you on the Fantastic Four thing. Hickman has been really hitting it out of the park this last year and personally I'm enjoying the ride. Obviously Johnny will come back, there's no question about it but until then I'm sure we'll see some good stories come out of it. What bothers me though is how every writer seems hell-bent on ignoring Mark Waid's run and how it matured Johnny a bit. After 600 issues you would think that maybe there's more to him than frat-boy skirt-chaser.

Oh, and about Phoenix. You do know what a phoenix is, right? You didn't really expect her to stay dead, right?

There will probably be like Wolverine and The X-Men #1 and Then Cyclops will have his Team in like The "X-Men" book and Rouge will have her team in X-Men Legacy and who knows what will happen with Astonshing X-Men that's my best guess.

They do that kind of stuff, fo example in al that cases when X-men were disbanding and putting back together for some reasons

Didn't they do a .1 issue for UXM? Why the hell would they create a "jumping on point for new readers" if they were just going to cancel it?

I have been reading Uncanny X-Men mostly out of some kind of misplaced loyalty. I have been enjoying Gischler's X-Men title much more of late. I have really enjoyed the past few issues Gillen has written and I was beginning to get excited about this book again, but alas.

I think Utopia should be destroyed at the end of Schism. Have most of the characters split up and have a smaller, core team with new leadership be the focus of UXM. No cancelling.

Uuuuummmm.... WHY?? Do they feel the need to try and keep up with DC? I just can't see them NOT having Uncanny X-Men or any extended amount of time. I'm betting 1-2 years max and it gets renamed back to Uncanny. This sounds like just something to shake up the titles.

What a disgrase.
Thou shalt honor  thy comic book collectors and not drive them insane.
After the "Heroes Reborn" fiasco , you (Marvel) got whistled back to go the the original numbering.
DC knows that now and has done so with Wonder Woman and Adventure Comics. There was also the astonishing X-men quite a few years back with the cancellation of the regular seires and starting a few new. But still you do not learn. Fantastic Four, The incredible Hulk(s) and now Uncanny x-men. Probably Daredevil will not be returning and retaking his role in (...., the man without fear) series. Whilst, faking issue's 900 and 1000. Please do not do this.

When I was a kid my mom always bought whatever comics I wanted, I'd beg and pester her until she finally let me pick some out. Uncanny X-Men was one of the books I begged for. It was probably far over my head for a kid, but it didn't matter I loved the X-Men, all their different gifts. Everyone was so different no one had the same power, and even as a kid I absolutely loved that diversity.

The last year or so I have bitched about the book boring me at times, but it wasn't just Uncanny X-Men, all the X-Books have been mediocre in my opinion. Regardless, I wasn't going to drop it, I had thought of it briefly but I never would have done it. Its has been for me, like Wonder Woman, I'm not dropping her, ever. Even if I spout off hate about the idea of her with Supes, in reality I will never drop her. There are a handful of books, I will always pull. Uncanny X-Men was one of those books, so should it begin again at another time, this loyal fan will, be there.

Until then, it will be sorely missed.

Marvel is pulling out all the stops to attract new readers by rebooting all it's long running series at #1 then renumbering them later to boost sales. Because of this we are heading towards a future where Marvel will reboot every series after each story arc ends. Marvel should stop trying to attract new readers and be happy with the hundreds of millions of readers it already has.

I guess the X Men will join the AVENGERS, everyone else is joining the AVENGERS, they should break up the AVENGERS again, WEST COAST and EAST COAST! But this is bad for the X Men, especially after the movies, Who is thinking up these moves? Bendis?

Dig, what you're saying. But FF is really still Hickman's same phenomenal Fantastic Four book at it's core. If anything it's the next step in Hickman's Four run and I've been loving it myself. This like all things at the big two will amount to nothing in the long run. We'll get a Wolverine and The X-men & A "____X-men" book until 500 rolls around and then Uncanny X-Men will be back. Stupid. Yes I know, but that's how the game goes. Marvel is notorious for renumbering their issues and retitling them. Most recently we saw it with Iron Man.

Waiting for 550 doesn't make sense because than it would be easier for a Fan to not pick up whatever one or two or 7 replacement Uncanny X-Men books they come out with the Next month. ending it on #544 gives the fan a sense of incompletion and a desire to fill such void with  a new title. Marvel knows it's audience and Like DC is trying to get a new younger auidence again if It works we'll see if not 2012 may be the last year of monthly paper comicbooks.

This seems insulting. I know the series was canceled once before. But that was of necessity. It just wasn't selling. This just sounds like a gimmick to me, a gimmick that besmirches the name of the most consistent comic book I've ever read. Ugh. Unhappy.

I wish I could say this means something unfortunately it doesn't The #'s on the books mean absolutely nothing Collecting every issue of a title is pointless because to get the full story you have to collect all the crossovers too, the best thing any comicbook fan can do nowadays is pick and choose what stories they think they will like and what issues they think they may want to read and if the book disappoints don't buy the next issue. My collection is gonna be my favorite issues that I will want to read again and it's gonna have so many holes in it and that really doesn't matter because what happened before the issue your reading doesn't really matter unless it sounds like an intersting story and what Happens after only matters if you care about what's happening in the issue your reading. The # on the front unfortunately is absolutely meaningless.

Wow, that is sad but I kind of like the idea.  I'm starting to wonder what is going on with Marvel, though. This is the second long-running title that is about to conclude.
I have been wondering the same thing and my own personal theory is right now Marvel wants the Avengers as their main team in the spotlight and anything to diminish their other teams to prop up the Avengers with all the planed movies coming up over the next few years will only help the Avengers hype machine.

You know I've really been enjoying Gillen's run, but it's sad to think that the end of such a great title mostly consisted of underwhelming stories by Brubaker/Fraction. At least (I hope) it goes out on a good note and Gillen or another talented writer takes the reigns of whatever it's going to become.

I dont get why they would do this. What's the point of canceling this series and launching a different X-Men series that will probably have most of the same characters.
