'Ultimate Spider-Man' Episodes 1 & 2 Comparison and Analysis

There's a new Spider-Man animated series. Find out how it compares to the comics. SPOILERS.

After a hiatus from animated television, Spider-Man is back on the small screen. Ultimate Spider-Man airs Sunday mornings on Disney XD and has many comic book creators such as Paul Dini, Brian Michael Bendis, Joe Kelly and Steven Seagle involved with the show.

No Caption Provided

Over the years we have seen numerous animated incarnations of the web-slingers adventures. Some, like the recent Spectacular Spider-Man, have been fairly close to the comics. With the first two episodes of Ultimate Spider-Man, "Great Power" and "Great Responsibility," we're seeing a whole new game for Spider-Man. We'll give a quick run through of some of the differences and similarities. There will be spoilers below if you haven't already watched the episodes.

== TEASER ==

The Daily Bugle

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

You can't (and shouldn't) have a Spider-Man show without the Bugle and J. Jonah Jameson. Jameson is around this time and is still spewing his rants over what a menace Spider-Man is.

The newspaper does exist in this animated universe but there's more to it. Jameson now has the Daily Bugle Communications at his disposal to wage war against any costumed menaces running around.

This is similar to what we can expect in The Amazing Spider-Man movie as seen when Captain George Stacy spoke out against Spider-Man recently.

Spider-Man's Career and Friends

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

We don't start out with the obligatory origin. Everyone should know by now that he was bitten by a radioactive spider and gained the proportional strength and ability of spiders.

In this version, he's been Spider-Man for a year. That means he's had his share of adventures. He's a little rough around the edges but has had a good amount of experience.

As for his friends, Mary Jane and Harry Osborn are his best friends. Peter is still in high school and unfortunately Flash Thompson is in the picture as well. You can imagine what that means for Peter.

Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.

No Caption Provided

What does Nick Fury have to do with Spider-Man?

As in the Ultimate Universe, Nick Fury knows Spider-Man's secret identity. He wants Spider-Man to become part of SHIELD. He knows he has potential but is still a 'newbie.' He may be able to stop criminals like the Trapster but left a bit of a mess. He points out that heroes like Captain America could have stopped the threat with no damage to public property. He also mentions that not all heroes were perfect right from the beginning. With some training, Spider-Man could be a better Spider-Man. He could become the Ultimate Spider-Man.

New Tech, Part 1: Web Shooters

No Caption Provided

Peter was brilliant in being able to design and build his web shooters. Fury offers him the opportunity to have high tech web shooters. This is the 'next gen' version. Spider-Man is reluctant to have anything to do with Fury's offer. The new shooters are "too big and too clunky" in his opinion. Of course he doesn't give them back right away (partly due to their camouflage ability).

Spider-Man's Enemies

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

You can't have a Spider-Man show without his enemies. That's where Norman Osborn comes in. He, as usual, has a deep interest in Spider-Man. His reason here is he wants to learn everything there is to know about him in order to create an army of Spider-Men for the highest bidder.

Osborn is working with a certain multi-armed foe of Spider-Man who is only seen in the shadows.

Other villains are sent after Spider-Man, including the rest of the Frightful Four (Spider-Man had already defeated Trapster). Wizard, Klaw and Thundra are on deck to take on Spider-Man. Peter has to figure out how they discovered that Spider-Man possibly goes to his high school (as in the original ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN comic) and how he can get away to defeat them.

Mary Jane's Career Interest

No Caption Provided

What does Mary Jane want to do with her life after high school? Does she want to be a model or an actress? Nope. As in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, MJ has a taste for journalism. She wants to report the news. This has Peter a little concerned as he fears she will uncover his secret since they've known each other since they were five.

It doesn't look like Peter will be taking pictures of himself to sell to the Bugle. At least not yet. He's going to be busy with school, training with SHIELD and fighting the bad guys.

Aunt May Isn't Old and Frail

No Caption Provided

As in the Ultimate comics, this version of Aunt May has some spunk to her. She works during the day, she does yoga, takes cooking classes and bowls on a weekly basis. This gives Peter the chance to pretty much come and go as he wants and needs to as Spider-Man.

Spider-Man's Peers

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

This show isn't only going to feature Spider-Man. If he takes Fury up on his offer to be trained by SHIELD, he'll be working with other teen heroes. Nova, White Tiger, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have all been trained by SHIELD but don't have the experience that Spider-Man does. This is where they can help each other.

Obviously there is a difference from the regular comics as these heroes are all teenagers now. It should also be noted that this Nova unfortunately is not Richard Rider. This is the Sam Alexander version that appeared in POINT ONE and will soon arrive on Earth during AVENGERS VS. X-MEN.

These teen heroes won't just be hanging around a SHIELD Helicarrier all day. They'll be transferring to Peter's school, which happens to also have a new principal, also known as Agent Coulson.

Curt Connors and SHIELD?

No Caption Provided

We all know Curt Connors becomes the Lizard. It turns out that he's SHIELD's resident tech genius. This is quite a departure as Curt was more about genetics rather than technology. What about his missing arm? You'll have to watch the episode to see about that and any possible connections to becoming the Lizard.

New Tech, Part 2: the Spider-Cycle?

No Caption Provided

Yes, Spider-Man might be getting a new set of wheels. Why would he need a ride when he could web-sling across the city? It's pointed out that webbing cost money and also the Spider-Cycle could actually get him there faster. Spider-Man just has to learn to drive and control it. He doesn't even have a learner's permit (he does in live in New York City after all).

As with all SHIELD vehicles, it's not your average mode of transportation. It has some heavy duty features that will really amp up Spider-Man's career. We'll just have to see if he decides to keep it. There's also the matter of where would he park it. I'd imagine parking in New York is as much of a problem as it is in San Francisco, if not worse. It does change Spider-Man a bit but that seems to be a possible part of the show. We'll have to stay tuned to see if he keeps it and what other gadgets he uses.

That about wraps up the first two episodes. What did you think of this incarnation of Spider-Man? Hopefully you had a chance to catch them. I'd imagine Disney XD will show the episodes again before next Sunday. Be sure to check your cable guide and set your DVR or alarm. You won't want to miss out on the other events from these episodes as well as what's coming up on the next one.

I enjoyed it, it was fun and i'm loving White Tiger(Ava Ayala), Power Man and iron Fist on the show.

It was also great seeing the Frightful Four, especially Thundra as this was her first time animated. i also love this shows version of Aunt May. Can't wait to see more and i'm looking forward to the Taskmaster episode.

Where do I begin???

Well first off I don;t agree with Drake Bell being the new Spider-Man... I don't know I just can't really imagine him at all beign Spidey. I keep thinking Josh peck is going to pop out of nowhere in the show. The show itself is just really weird... Why does Spidey have to narrate to the audience? I mean I know that's what he does when he's in deep thought I get that but he's not thinking he's literally breaking the fourth wall. I only expect that from Deadpool.

Basically, The show has potential... I'm really hoping it gets better. And sadly I'm seeing how long this show goes on b4 another company pulls the plug on another spidey show

I don't hate fun. I hate suck, which this show has plenty of.

Well...I just watched the first two episodes and honestly....I wasn't impressed. The humor felt forced most of the time, and i hated the "Breaking the third wall to give out exposition" thing he was doing. Plus the "Family Guy" like cut away gags were hit or miss (although the "donde esta la bibiloteca" Community reference made me laugh). So far it's just TOO childish to me...hopefully it gets better, cause really, I'm missing Spectacular Spider-Man right about now.

Just so you know, donde esta la bibiloteca is from Pulp Fiction.

Just caught the first episode, I won't be tuning in again. It was not funny. I would rather watch Spectacular Spiderman again for the third time. That show was so impressive. Ultimate is light years behind.

Hmm... I was really hating on this because it replaced Spectacular Spiderman (my favourite show), but after watching it, I was surprised. It was funny, had some good action and good cameo's. I'll give it a chance.

I liked it but I really had to quiet my inner nerd that wanted to scream at a young Power Man cause they totally merged new Power Man and Luke Cage. Plus aren't he and Iron Fist supposed to be in the Avengers cartoon this season?

I never read the Ultimate Spider-Man comics so I don't have much reverence for this particular take of Peter Parker. The premise of a the government agency lending a hand to a rookie hero sounds like Invincible. I guess I see where Kirkman got the inspiration for certain aspects of his plot though he obviously took it in a wildly different direction from a typical Spider-Man adventure. I'm not really digging the teen version Heroes for Hire or whatever they are but they were funny at times.

I will say that although I don't have much attachment to character I enjoyed how they handled the gags in the show. The animation team seems to be the same ones that did The Boondocks cartoon and you can see it when they frequently do a fast panning cut to a funny scene when someone makes a reference. That was a good series that had great attention to detail in action scenes and I think they handled Spidey well. Spider-Man is already a clownish persona so I'm glad show tries to give a lot of play to his comedic side.

I probably won't follow this show for very long although the true test will be how they handle the Green Goblin story. I don't think this show will ever be as good as the older cartoons like the 90's one or his Amazing Friends but this is clearly superior on the production end of things. This TV season is all about 2 things: Game of Thrones and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

@CaioTrubat: I'd say because Disney and Marvel are more involved (rather than Sony), it has a chance of sticking around longer (no pun intended).

Idk about property rights but when I saw Agent Coulson (a movie franchise original) show up, I said okay Marvel is trying to "ALIGN" all their movie+comics+TV universes. Thats why SSM was cancelled imo.

--------------------

As for Rich Rider. I was disappointed as well. Edit: I reread. He's like Reptil.

"Nova is an enormously popular character,” Loeb stated to Marvel.com. “When the decision in publishing was for Rich Rider to sacrifice himself [at the climax of THE THANOS IMPERATIVE] we wanted to respect that. We all know that there are other members of the Nova Corp and this is the story of one such member --Sam Alexander.”

Loeb goes on to compare this version of Nova to Spider-Man.

“He’s very much like Peter Parker was at the beginning of Spidey’s career--he’s got a lot to prove,” said Loeb. “The difference is that Sam comes with a full blown attitude—which, as we may suspect, might be covering up some insecurities.”

We also learn that Sam will be getting a big push from Marvel, as Loeb states the character will be a breakout star.

“We’re huge Nova fans as well, so rest assured Nova will be front and center with the heavy-duty action. There’s no task he’s not willing to get into and that bravery--even at personal risk--will put him in harm’s way more often than not. He loves playing the hero, so look for Nova to be the breakout star of the series!”

The costume featured by Sam Alexander in Ultimate Spider-Man was recently released as an extra (DLC) for Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 as well.

http://television.cosmicbooknews.com/content/disneys-ultimate-spider-man-nova-not-richard-rider

To me that is intriguing.

1) Nova is enormously popular? Okay. He is obviously talking amongst comic fans, not mainstream.

2) Comic fans know that Richard Rider was a young'n at the same time as Spidey. New Warriors. Hello?

I did not know that Sam Alexander's costume was DLC in UMvC3.

Will we see Rich Rider? As an adult? Will we see Rocket Raccoon? Star-Lord?

I loved them, its typical spidey

Typical Spidey doesn't have imagination moments like that.

On panel, but when he's making his usual jokes and quips, you gotta imagine these are the kinds of things going on in his mind.

He only makes jokes and quips because he's nervous, and the benefit is that it ends up distracting his enemies.

What's really going through his mind is, "HOLY SH*T, THE LIZARD IS GONNA F**KING EAT ME", not "OMG I'M IN A MARIACHI BAND!"

Okay dude relax, i guess we just see Spidey in different ways.

He's not wrong, though. Even in the actual Ultimate Spider-Man book (I think it was issue... 6 or 7, where he first fights the Green Goblin at the school), it's established that he makes quips because it's basically that or peeing his pants.

As for what I thought, I didn't think it was bad. However, the quick cuts to the semi-random asides and the chibi-mode Spidey were a little too reminiscent of the Teen Titans cartoon. And Lizzie McGuire. I thought the straight rip-off of the Scott Pilgrim "K.O.!" moment at the end of the second episode with Luke Cage and The Wizard was a little... uninspired, to say the least, especially since it used a similarly-styled announcer voice and had 8-bit sounds playing along with it.

On a slightly unrelated note, when the Junior S.H.I.E.L.D. Scooby Gang appeared in their civilian guises at the end of the second episode, and Nova was a Reptil-looking fellow who said his name was Sam Alexander, I really couldn't help but think "Oh, is this why it's no longer Richard Rider in the comics, Loeb?"

Also, compared to everybody else's cartoonish faces, Agent Coulson's relatively accurate Clark Gregg face was kind of off-putting.

This was such a disappointment! My first problem is the character design and aesthetics. Ive just dont like it! the faces look terrible and they are not even cartoony in a cool way! they just seem to be unfinished or sometimes they even look awkward! Some look less detailed while other look like portraits taken from real actors! Spiderman is by far the best characters just because he wears a mask and lots of new horrible gadgets. The more exagerated cartoony parts are just a Teen titans rip off and it looks ever worse now that CD nation has tiny titans! Besides Ive just hated to first episode I couldn't even watch it completely! and its so hard to laugh at some jokes! If one episode and a half are enough to show the quality of the show then Im out!

I feel like this is a kids show and im too old for it( i mean all the asides he does where he breaks the fourth wall annoy me). animation seems fine. I like the departure from the standard solo spidey learning by himself path. I want to watch this but i may not be able to keep interested(and not because of boredom). I really hate this unfunny spiderman.... I remember liking spectacular spiderman, It was more standard in its pace, but it had as good or better fighting (the venom suit fighting the sinister 6 was awesome). I will really try with this show but with legend of Korra, Young Justice and Earth's mightiest heros(i remember being surprised by how awesome this got since i remember thinking it was targeted for kids, i really liked the first couple episodes and the last couple before the end of the season)

I loved the first two episdoes. Thought they were great fun. Also not getting the comparisons to Spectacular. In reality while both are Spider-man shows they are also clearly aiming for different things. I'm pleased they didn't aim for another serious Spider-man show as its nice to see something new and I think people would be hating it even more as it could never compare to their precious Spectacular Spider-man.

I think the whole problem with some reactions to this show is how it stacks up to Spectacular Spider-man. I remember when Spectacular Spider-man first came on and it showed I think the first 3 episodes, and the same was done with this (with 2) but it just didn't have the same impact. I think a lot of it has to do with the seriousness, 'cause sure Spider-man is funny when he's fighting a villain but when he is out of costume it should be toned down. Also the fight scenes in Spectacular were awesome, especially in the Lizard episode, however in Ultimate Spider-man it just couldn't compare. To make this show good it actually has to live up to the standards of it's predecessor.

Humor always comes along with Spider-man and I likes that tone of it but.... to me it makes it look like he's not brilliant, I mean they came up with a statement "webbing is costly", then there is the bike and possibly other equipment, not all that spider like but it's a new feel for the kids I guess, will still watch though but Avengers has the tone I like to see....

This is supposed to appeal to the kids,I feel as though it's a fresh take on Spidey and I support the show, 4th wall and all. Spiderman is a comedian of sorts anyway, I'm sure that there isn't a person who doesn't wonder what Spidey is thinking in comics when it's not implied. The writers are just giving viewers a fresh take on his mentality which is hardly ever serious even in dire situations.

Man this would be so much better if they do all those f*cken 4th wall breaking and ''in his head'' jokes. Also the fact that connor made a better web shooter sorta make Parker look way less intelligent. He wouldn't let Flash bully him with his powers. The fight scenes are a bit lacking and the characters interaction seems a bit cheesy.

If they were to correct most of this, it could be a trully great show. For now I'll just give it a 6.5/10.

I'm on the half that says Sony should have given up the film rights instead of television rights.

What Spectacular got right in the first 2 episodes, Ultimate does the opposite.

The cutaway gags are on par with Scrubs and Family Guy as pointless, the jokes aren't that funny and Drake Bell is more whiny than witty. That and this doesn't feel like a Spider-Man cartoon, but more like an original Man of Action cartoon. They should just stick to Ben 10 and Generator Rex.

PS Amazing's gonna suck too.

It has... potential I suppose. A few jokes made me laugh, which is WAY more than I expected to laugh ofter seeing the previews. The animation is alright, but the character designs could use a little work, Im not digging how flat they look if that makes sense.

I also have no problem with most of the voice work. I think I enjoyed Drake Bell as Spider-Man alot more than some people. He sounds similar enough to Josh Keaton, though he lacks the nuances in Keatons performance. At least so far. He will probably improve as time goes on though. Chi McBride as Fury was cool, and Richard Simmons as JJJ was pretty much AMAZING but other than that the rest of the voice talent didnt really stand out.

The BIGGEST problem with the series is the stupid gadgets and an over reliance on 4th wall breaking jokes. The biggest and most notable offender to me was when Peter described Aunt May's "coolness" while looking straight at the audience. That wasnt needed and really wasnt funny either. Like I said though some of it was legitimately funny, they just have got to learn to not rely on it for every other joke.

The gadgets are just plain stupid. There is no other way to put it. The Spider Bike is a dumb concept that looks like it was made just to sell toys, and the enhanced web shooters really kinda diminish how special Peter is. Which is really my biggest problem with the Shield equipped Spider-Man. Peter is supposed to be this genius level kid, and that is best shown in his development of the web shooters. It makes Peter look bad that someone at SHEILD built a better more reliable version of his web shooters in his spare time. In my opinion the Shield supported Spider-Man concept would work best if they just financed him (for stuff like web fluid), and built things that are impossible at his level like the Iron Spider suit seen in the previews, which could be kinda cool.

AS long as they dont go overboard with the humor, and cut the dumb Shield built gadgets, the show could have some promise. Its no Spectacular Spider-Man, but it certainly isnt bad.

I would give it a 7/10

Osborn is working with a certain multi-armed foe of Spider-Man who is only seen in the shadows.

We all know who that is. It's....Doc Ock. =P

I liked it very much , a few moments looked cheesy, but the rest is pretty awesome; yeah is kinda childish comedy but what's wrong with childish? you just have to stop looking at all so seriously. You are so "adultish", you can be mature and look at this stuff and laugh at the same time, one thing don't have to be related with the other: Mind of an adult, soul of a child,

Not. Impressed.

I loved Spectacular Spider-man. Great art(I like how they actually made Spidey still look like a kid and not bulk him out). OutSTANDING quips that had me rolling in streams of laughter. And a decent execution in regards to resembling the comics as best it could. And the voice acting. I mean you can't beat his VA. I play Shattered Dimensions JUST for him and Niel Patrick.

This, I don't know. I feel like I HAVE to like it because I love spider-man so much. But I'm not really impressed with the art and feels almost like the Teen Titans cartoon. And that pseudo-anime crap was WAY annoying. And don't even get me STARTED on the out of costume art. OR the constant 4th wall breaking. Petey's hair? Really? I mean, I loooved me some Thundra, but still. And funnies? I haven't laughed once. Okay, I laughed when Spidey tried to shake Conners' hand. Voice actors aren't all that for me. I'll give it a chance and still watch it faithfully, hoping that one day it'll win me over. Spidercycle? I do hope the ditches that like he did the Spidermobile. So out of 5 I give it a 3. Barely.
