Ubisoft and Marvel Entertainment Announce 'Avengers: Battle For Earth'

The Earth is in danger but it doesn't have to do with the invasion from the movie.

It's a bit surprising that we don't already have an Avengers video game since the movie is in theaters now pretty much everywhere. That could be a good thing as video games based on comic book movies rarely are worth playing.

Today, Marvel Entertainment and Ubisoft have announced they are working on a game based on the Avengers but it's not inspired by the movie. According to a press release posted by Superherohype, Ubisoft Quebec is working on "Avengers: Battle For Earth."

No Caption Provided

The game will have interactive environments and be inspired by "iconic" Marvel comic artwork and the Secret Invasion storyline. The game is due in the Fall for Xbox 360 with Kinect and Nintendo's Wii U system. What about PS3?

Here's what Tony Key, US senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft had to say:

We are excited to team up with Marvel Entertainment to bring some of the most iconic comic book characters from the Marvel line-up to life in motion-gaming. Fans of the Marvel universe and superhero games are going to love the extensive combinations of characters, motion-controlled moves and competitive gameplay.

What about characters?

== TEASER ==

Andreea Enache-Thune, senior vice president of games and digital distribution at Marvel had this to say:

Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth features 20 different characters, including Avengers such as Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor, as well as other fan-favorite super heroes and super villains from the Marvel Universe.

Obviously we will be skeptical until we see more.

There is a website for the game but so far there is no information besides the logo and the option to sign up to Ubisoft's newsletter and announcements. A Secret Invasion game would be great. Will the game be great? Kinect and Wii U? Let's start hoping and crossing our fingers right now.

Sounds like a wasted opportunity. I'm sure it'll make them a decent amount of cash (thanks to the kiddies), but I can't see actual gamers being too thrilled about this. Obviously this is jumping the gun based on limited information... but hey, isn't that what we do as fans? I'm curious to hear more, but I can't say I'm excited at all for this one.

BAM! This man speaks the truth! Motion controlled( Kinect) games almost always let down. I'm not looking forward to this nor will I be expecting something good out of it.

I would prefer a new X-Men Legends or another Ultimate Alliance, and I believe I am not alone in thinking that.

edit: I only replaced a couple of words to make it sound.. better.

@Deranged Midget: Thanks.

@CookieVonDoom: You're absolutely not alone! I'd looooove to see a 3rd MUA which takes what worked well from both previous games. We need the heavier story and RPG elements from the first, and the increased graphics and presentation value of the second.

I am really worried right now. I would have preferred a action-RPG like Marvel Ultimate Alliance instead. I know that sounds really cool but I heard Star Wars Kinect had terrible controls and was barely functional.

No PS3? I can only think that this game is motion sensor based since it is on the Kinect and Wii U. I'll be more interested when there is gameplay and screenshots.

I kinda want that... kinda. I mean I loved the X-men Legends games that MUA was based on. And the first MUA was pretty good. But each time they built one of those, they took more and more control from the player. Each one had less and less ability to kit out your hero as you saw fit. By the time MUA2 rolled around, all the fun customization of the X-men games, which were built as action RPGs, was gone.

If they could take the franchise back in the other direction, I'd totally be on board. But I like a little customization and choice in those types of games. It'd be nice to see that level of interaction with your chosen characters as we had in X-men Legends 2 again.

So MUA3... totally. But it'd be nice if they leaned more toward X-men Legends 2 rather than MUA2. At least for my tastes.

This will be some crappy mini game type thing will be pretty throw away...probably to coincide with the Avengers on BR and DVD in September. The fact it isn't on PS3 or Vita AND it seems to rely on Kinect makes me not really care about this game in the short term.

So MUA3... totally. But it'd be nice if they leaned more toward X-men Legends 2 rather than MUA2. At least for my tastes.

Could you go into more detail about what you mean by having less custimization ?

Sure.

The games came about because of the popularity of the Snowblind engine and games built upon it's platform during the last console cycle. RPGs with real time combat. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath, etc. You got the fun of an RPG but built around a hack-n-slash style gameplay that, while occasionally repetitive, offered a lot of options in how you played. Lots of armor options, lot's of spells to choose from. Good stuff. And X-Men Legends was built on that engine and offered a lot of those same options but with a fun Marvel twist.

In X-Men Legends you could put pieces of armor on your characters, add points where you wanted on your upgrade tree, and had more options for special moves. As time, and games, went on those kinds of options started to disappear. X-Men Legends 2 had the just right amount of micromanagement. Enough to give you the feeling of agency over your characters, but not too much that you end up with a pile of junk in an items menu doing nothing because it's too tangled a mess to sort out.

With MUA, a lot of that was taken out. You had less moves per character and while there were some customization options, they were significantly reduced. Still fun, but lacking the feeling of agency I mentioned before. They balanced it by adding more characters, but if given a choice of 20 character with 6 choices or 10 characters with 20 options, well you get the idea.

By the time we got to MUA 2, there were almost no items to equip. Just a blanket "medals" system that applied to the entire team and were almost pointless. The team up moves were mildly interesting at first, but the limited way in which you could use them coupled with the fact that so many of them were the super move equivalent to a palette swap and the whole thing felt more akin to Final Fight than an action RPG, which is how the series started. A beat-em-up is fine if that's all they want to do, but the X-Men Legends games and the first MUA were better, mostly because of the bits that were "streamlined" out of the games as time went on. As a parallel, consider first person games. Call of Duty single player compared to Fallout 3 single player. Both are exciting and fun in their own way, but even if you don't like Fallout, it's easy to pick which of these games has more depth and options.

As an example of what I mean, when me and my buddy would play X-ML, we would use a carefully picked team. I would take Wolverine with Bobby Drake as my 2nd, he would take Cyclops with Colossus as a 2nd. We could take certain armor pieces and apply them to the characters strengths. Cyke got all the ranged perks, Wolvie got all the melee perks, and our backups got armor pieces to build up stamina and endurance (or whatever they were called) to keep them healthy if we needed them. The Strength bonuses would go to Colossus because he could pick up Wolvie and do the Cannonball Toss and the more power behind it the more it would hurt enemies. And with Wolvie we could add perks that would augment his healing abilities. That way even if we got overwhelmed in combat I would usually be able to bail and go back to a checkpoint to revive my buddies fallen characters. These are just examples of one of the games, but the ability to customize was a big part of the fun. In later games these options were stripped out entirely or limited in ways that made them much less useful, depending on which game we're talking about. By MUA2 these perks were virtually gone and upgrading was reduced to a "Auto-Level" option, or you could manually level but it was largely the same options. Everything was basically decided for you whether you wanted to play that way or not.

Interesting trivia bit, the success of X-ML and MUA spawned a DC analog called "Justice League: Heroes". A very fun game with plenty of Action RPG trappings and customization. Unfortunately, many of the missions locked you in to certain characters, but even still it was a lot of fun. Still available on the PSN service for use on PSP or Vita. This portable version also had extra characters that the Xbox/PS2 version didn't have (Supergirl and Hawkgirl)

if they are smart they will make it kinect usable but not mandatory. I'm pretty pumped for this game, and would love to see a a game company make a deal where they release a game for the big story arch of the year. you could do ulitmate alliance and literally have it go for ever, with game updates and add-ons (a gaming comic fan can dream can't he)
