Two Writers Currently Working on 'Aquaman' Movie Script

Get pumped, Arthur Curry fans!

All signs are pointing to Aquaman having a cameo in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and getting a bigger role in Justice League, but it looks like Warner Bros has even bigger plans for the classic character! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad have been hired to create their own scripts for an Aquaman movie. Beall's credits include Gangster Squad and Castle, and Johnstad's credits include both 300 movies and Act of Valor.

We're hoping you'll be king of the big screen as well, Arthur.

As for which actor will bring Arthur Curry to life, many reports are claiming Jason Momoa landed the role months ago, but the studio has yet to confirm the casting. If you somehow missed it, Zack Snyder also called a radio station to say why he thinks Aquaman is no joke and a seriously powerful character. Seems safe to assume the character will at least be formidable in the cinematic universe! So, it's looking like we may have the opportunity to say "a ticket to Aquaman, please" within the next few years or so. Pretty cool, huh? Anyway, let us know what you want to see in an Aquaman movie in the comments below.

Gangster Squad and 300: Rise of an Empire were pretty awful so I don't see where the excitement is coming from.

This few years have been good years for Aquaman fans. Two ongoing Aquaman comics series in New 52. Will have Aquaman centric animated movie in Throne of Atlantis animated movie. Also will appear and have own solo Aquaman live action movie

Yikes.

Posted by Ultron345

I know it's uncool to be excited about DC but actually getting to see aquaman in a movie is cool. I hope they do the throne of atlantis arc.

Atlantean mythology and plenty of it.

@smashbrawler: Oh well you have to remember James Gunn write those horrible Scooby Doo movies and yet he give us great GOTG movie

Posted by MrTummyTumms

I can't handle the hype!

Posted by SmashBrawler

@boynerdgeek: Well yeah, but that's the difference, he wrote those movies, he didn't direct them. Granted, it's not guaranteed the script (or the movie for that matter) will suck just because these two writers are attached to the project but it's not a good sign either.

The interesting question is which version of Aquaman will they use ? The long hair Aquaman or The short hair Aquaman ?

Edited by MrMazz

It's an interesting differntation for Warner Bros. to essentially order two scripts and pick one. Most of the time now you have studios bringing in two writers - writing two scripts and than combining them into one tome, I wana say this was a topic on the Scriptnotes Podcast recently but an ep number isn't coming to mind. EDIT: I some how missed Ep 155 which is the one in question.

I don't like Man of Steel but I enjoy Warner Bros. apprence of giving their writers and directors more room to tinker around in the production of these films. Marvel Studios is an old Hollywood throw back but that's also why all their films look and act the same and why I'm kind of bored by them.

lol Warner Bros is still trying, huh??

I also wondering, this Aquaman movie will be fun and colourful like Superfriends cartoon or this Aquaman movie will be serious and gritty ? Ermm...

Here's hoping it's good.

Out of those too options I'd rather have the gritty one.

Who will be the villain for Aquaman movie ? Black Manta or Ocean Master ? I feels if they do Ocean Master as villain general audience who doesn't read comics will compare Aquaman-Ocean Master to Thor-Loki from first Thor movie

Edited by Knightfall225

So excited for this :D. My second favorite hero finally gets a movie. i thought I'd never see the day!

If you guys realise this week is all about Aquaman on comics news. First the statement make by Zack Snyder said that Aquaman is badass etc. Next we get picture and sneek peek from Throne of Atlantis animated movie which is based from Aquaman comics. Then today we know Aquaman movie will come soon and currently have 2 writers write thw script

Posted by micah

It's because of Family Guy, Robot Chicken, and Super Friends that Aquaman isn't respected in the mainstream eye.

Posted by T_Aesir

If i was Wb/Dc i will not go with Aquaman it s a joke in media, and regular audience could reject this Character.

Posted by Boynerdgeek

@t_aesir: Thank god you're not in charge of DC/WB . Go read comics and play Injustice gods among us games to see how awesome Aquaman is

Posted by BatWatch

Yeah, the most brag worthy title in those writing credits is Castle, and I don't even like that show. I enjoyed both 300 movies, but I enjoyed those for the action. The story was fine, but the basic structure wasn't even created by the movie writers. Didn't see Gangster Squad, but the general reception was "meh."

To pull off an unpopular character like Aquaman, they really need to bring their A game. Better to keep the character in obscurity than to risk big with B-String writers.

That being said, you never know what creative minds might put together. It could end up a masterful script, but I'm skeptical.

Both are vital to make a great movie. But I'll say that direction is of more visceral importance when watching a movie.

A well-directed film can be entertaining, even exciting, as you watch it even if the script is weak; take J.J. Abrams helming of the Star Trek films, for example. But even a great story poorly directed is usually an insufferable thing to sit through; there are innumerable poor movie adaptions of great literature to prove this out.

But a movie with great writing and direction sticks with you afterwards. Usually it's only after a film is over that I start fully appreciating the writing, whereas the direction impacts the moment to moment experience.

At the end of the day, I hate dividing the two disciplines too much, since they are both vital tools in crafting the movie. We have lots of great directors, but very, very few good writers. My personal summation of current film and television is this:

They know how to tell a story, but they rarely have a story worth telling.

Posted by Boynerdgeek

@hashbrowns: wow thanks for in depth explaination. It really open my minds into film-making and film industries. Great info :)

Posted by T_Aesir

@boynerdgeek:i never said i think Aquaman is a joke, it was how regular movie going audiences could see him influenced by the media.

Always posts in the fan perspective, a movie to have a good box office, has to appeal to general audiences (not only comic book fans that are 1% of the audience) 99% don t read comics and don t play Injustice gods among us, its hard to understand that.

Posted by BeaconofStrength

They better make Aquaman a complete badass.

Posted by Ostyo

Awesome, lets hope we get a great film.

Gangster Squad and 300: Rise of an Empire were pretty awful so I don't see where the excitement is coming from.

its funny, the writer for inhumans hasnt wrote anything, james gunn wrote scooby do, writer from thor wrote cody banks, new writers for antman havent wrote anything and are currently writing sabrina the teenage witch, and i can go on and on but we all got hyped up for those movies

Posted by patrat18

Wb loves using the same writers, actors and directors.

Posted by Saint_Wildcard

And with Snyder's positive comment about Aquaman and Jason Mamoa (allegedly) , we can expect a BAMF King of the Sea

Edited by MadeinBangladesh

BADASS AQUAMAN WILL GET HIS DUE!!!!!!!!!!

I just hope these writers are good. Geoff Johns should be writing the Aquaman movie.

Edited by spidershamrock

One thing that really annoys me about the new DC movie universe is Zack Snyder

Edited by SilverPool

An Aquaman movie! F*** yes! Yes! It's going to be awesome!

*looks at the writers' track record* Aww s**t.

They better get a good director if these guys are writing it.

Edited by UchihAvenger

Writers are brought in to write scripts all the time so this news doesn't confirm anything. They're been bringing in script writers to write a Wonder Woman movie for decades now, including one from Joss Whedon, and what do they have to show for it. I'll take this news with a grain of salt.

Which isn't a good sign either.

james gunn wrote scooby do

But he didn't direct Scooby Doo.

writer from thor wrote cody banks

I didn't like Thor.

new writers for antman havent wrote anything and are currently writing sabrina the teenage witch

Again, not a good sign.

and i can go on and on but we all got hyped up for those movies

As you can see, I'm clearly not looking forward (at least right now) to either Inhumans or Ant-Man (hell, I lost faith in Ant-Man as soon as Edgar Wright left the project), so no, "we" didn't get hyped up for those movies.

Posted by Justthatkid

Wish their was more then just a site saying Aquaman is getting a movie.

But if true I'm glad, hope it gives him a great origin and a memorable one at that also having very compelling scenes.

Posted by RulerOfThisUniverse

I am so excited for this movie!

Posted by KaraZor-el

So cool

Posted by SpideyIvyDaredevilFan26

I'll see it just because Jason Momoa is in it and, let's face it, Jason Momoa is the man. And if it's great, it may even make an Aquaman fan out of me.

@hashbrowns:

Good analysis of writing vs directing. You spend a lot of time thinking abou this or are you just very wise?

Posted by Tony_Shark

Makes sense after the events of Infnity.

New Inhuman series, and now Medusa joining the Avengers along with another Inhuman.

They have been planning for this and it will be a response for Fox's X-Men. After their success in GotG, I will not be surprised if theu do extremely well on this film. Marvel studios dedicates solely on making superhero movies, unlike Warner Brothers, Sony, or Fox.

They can do a great job here and it looks like this was the plan all along.

Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange are coming up soon. Marvel has an excellent marketing team, so they'll announce news when the time is right.

"Zack Snyder called a radio station to say why he thinks Aquaman is no joke and a seriously powerful character"

I'm liking this guy more and more every minute!

See, that's exactly why I stopped watching BBT. I got sick of all its negative stereotyping of both geeks and Aquaman. But anyway, that's why they're introducing him in BvS first. To show the audience what a total badass he is before he gets his own movie.

Awesome, although I wish they went for a better a writer, hopefully the director will be good.

Edited by nappystr8

Well, I was totally on board until they listed the credentials of these two writers...now I'm thinking it might not be such a bad idea if Aquaman just sticks to the Justice League movies. I mean, Warner Bros is not an incompetent company, they have plenty of excellent franchises. The complete lack of quality going on in their DC film department is nothing if not proof that they have absolutely no understanding of why those characters deserve to be treated with dignity. The reason Marvel can sell D-listers to mainstream audiences while WB has problems even getting a Superman franchise off the ground is because they actually take the time to make good movies with proven creative talents instead of using the films as an outlet for cronyism which they can then throw money at until the brass looks like gold from a distance.

I'm trying have a more positive and open minded online presence, I really am, but DC, you have to at least meet me halfway one of these days. I mean, just try a little bit.

So, they're finally getting Vincent Chase to play Aquaman.
