What happens when Grant Morrison watches TRON? He takes a bunch of the concepts initially seen in the classic 1982 film and incorporates them (no pun intended) into issue #8 of Batman: Incorporated.
Initially, when I saw the design in the preview I thought it was Batwoman. I assumed she would be making the appearance considering her second volume was put on hiatus until this September -- however the lovely lady in the preview below is not Kate, but Barbara Gordon. Barbara's appearance in Issue #8 of Batman: Incorporated may bridge her return to the role of Batgirl in her all new upcoming series this September.
== TEASER ==The result is certainly...interesting. Looking at the preview, the story will center around Bruce Wayne and several of Wayne's board members and investors testing out new technology that merges reality with the virtual world. Essentially, the preview looks and feels a lot like the TRON movie -- here Bruce Wayne is Kevin Flynn and 'The Grid' is Wayne's 'Internet 3.0.' Initially, I thought this could have been a simple coincidence, until I saw Oracle break through a wall on the final preview page on her very own light cycle. Now, everyone wants a light cycle, but the appearance of one in a Batman book is a little to close to the release of Tron: Legacy for fans not to notice the similarities.
Generally, I am a huge fan of Grant Morrison, but this is just doesn't feel very original. Now, I know that everything in art is influenced and inspired by something else, but there seem to be far too many similarities to consider this a mere coincidence. Perhaps it would have been less noticeable if TRON hadn't been released in theaters less than a year ago. Check out the preview and solicit for the final issue of Batman: Incorporated #8, due in stores this Wednesday, August 24th. Personally, I'm a bit disappointed by the similarities, but it's still cool to see Barbara kicking butt in this preview. Who knows, it might turn out to be a good story. What do you guys think?
