Tron Meets Batman in the Upcoming Issue of Batman: Incorporated #8

Morrison integrates virtual reality and light cycles into the final issue of Batman: Inc.

What happens when Grant Morrison watches TRON? He takes a bunch of the concepts initially seen in the classic 1982 film and incorporates them (no pun intended) into issue #8 of Batman: Incorporated.

No Caption Provided

Initially, when I saw the design in the preview I thought it was Batwoman. I assumed she would be making the appearance considering her second volume was put on hiatus until this September -- however the lovely lady in the preview below is not Kate, but Barbara Gordon. Barbara's appearance in Issue #8 of Batman: Incorporated may bridge her return to the role of Batgirl in her all new upcoming series this September.

== TEASER ==

The result is certainly...interesting. Looking at the preview, the story will center around Bruce Wayne and several of Wayne's board members and investors testing out new technology that merges reality with the virtual world. Essentially, the preview looks and feels a lot like the TRON movie -- here Bruce Wayne is Kevin Flynn and 'The Grid' is Wayne's 'Internet 3.0.' Initially, I thought this could have been a simple coincidence, until I saw Oracle break through a wall on the final preview page on her very own light cycle. Now, everyone wants a light cycle, but the appearance of one in a Batman book is a little to close to the release of Tron: Legacy for fans not to notice the similarities.

No Caption Provided

Generally, I am a huge fan of Grant Morrison, but this is just doesn't feel very original. Now, I know that everything in art is influenced and inspired by something else, but there seem to be far too many similarities to consider this a mere coincidence. Perhaps it would have been less noticeable if TRON hadn't been released in theaters less than a year ago. Check out the preview and solicit for the final issue of Batman: Incorporated #8, due in stores this Wednesday, August 24th. Personally, I'm a bit disappointed by the similarities, but it's still cool to see Barbara kicking butt in this preview. Who knows, it might turn out to be a good story. What do you guys think? Full preview below.

That is not Batwoman but in fact the last of Barbara Gordon as she is now.  It's what him and Barbara were working on the whole time.

Yea, it does look really similar to Tron but I've enjoyed Batman Inc. so far and this CGI-ish art isn't gonna stop me from buying it. Maybe it just takes some getting used to.

Thanks for the heads up! I didn't read the last issue but I remember this now.

I guess I was hoping it would be Batwoman.

@Babs: Kinda like the avatar crime fighting idea probably won't be what they do in the new Batgirl book.

@johnny_spam: I too really doubt that's what will happen. I don't think it would be a good idea to restrict Barbara to being inside of a computer either, either make her Batgirl or don't. Putting a restriction like that on her seems silly, and I image would be too difficult for a writer.

@johnny_spam: And I don't see a whole lot of crime-fighting potential being in a computer lol. Apart from fighting off viruses and such.

It seems a little bit ridiculous. I would be so disappointed. Either do it 100% or not at all.

Seems interesting my only thing I don't like is the art I was never a big fan of the 3D renders for art it seems lazy and unwanted. I still prefer the drawn art, I'm unsure why they did not simply draw this than doing stupid renders.

@Bat_Mite51: @Babs: I know many are disappointed about her leaving the chair and not being Oracle to me as technology gets more advanced in the real world the superhero world should still seem like technology from the future giving superheroes information over her computer and headsets should seem old by now in this day and age since everyone's phones can do so much a superhero should easily be able to so much that they do not need her. Barbara Gordon fighting crime in another virtual world seems like a great mix of both ideas of her walking and her using advanced computers and could give her a new direction. Guess we'll know how it works exactly tomorrow.

Art direction aside, I imagine Grant still cooked up an original statement about technology, so I'm really not worried.

Ok. So. What the hell happened to Batman Incorporated #9 and #10?
9 was supposed to continue a 'Crossover' with Batgirl #22, and #10 was supposed to be the big bang that ended the first volume of the series. #8 was just... another one of those issues that was it's own little story and part of the buildup. Ugh. I was REALLY looking forward to all 3, moreso than some of the other issues of the series.

@The Mighty Monarch: I was looking forward to those to but the last issues will be released as a one shot called Batman: Leviathan Strikes! which will bridge the gap between this volume and Batman Leviathan next year.

@johnny_spam: But I think it wouldn't feel as interesting if that was all she was: A computer avatar. She did a lot as Oracle but if they are gonna give her back her Batgirl title, it makes sense that she could be out their kicking ass rather than in a virtual world.

Ok, they explained Dick - but what the hell is going on with Barbara? DC better explain how she can walk and be Batgirl again...unless Batgirl will just become a digital avatar but the previews of her series say otherwise.

In artwork one-shots, mashups like these should always be welcome. In actual story arcs, something as generic as Batman going into the digiverse is something I am quite skeptical about. Just look at the script of this short preview! Tron-ifying Batman is like Batman-ifying tron. If you've seen either, you'll know exact what I mean by this.

Babs' lightcycle in those images looks an awful lot like the Dodge Tomahawk concept motorcycle.  Especially the profile shot in the first panel on that last page.

Interesting concept! Yes, not terribly original but always have wanted to see the Caped Crusader enter the dimension of cyberspace to wage war against crime.  I'll check it out in trade for sure!

Isn't Cyber crime the fastest growing form of terrorism and could potentially bring countries to their knees based on information being stolen from computers?

Pretty sure I heard that on the News on Monday.

Anyway, this looks great. Bring on more Batman Inc.

There's taking inspiration from, and then there's plagiarism, to me it seems this tends towards the latter. I have no problem with Barbara taking on the Bat mantle again, but why would the "tron" anti-virus resemble her? I can't imagine software taking on a gender specific form, unless we are on the grid, which this isn't. And I suppose those crimials manifested out of random code or something? A silly plot deivce if so.
