Top Selling Comics & Publisher Market Share: March 2014

What were the number one sellers for March?

No Caption Provided

The numbers from March 2014! Diamond Comic Distributors has compiled the data from March and placed into awesome tables for math nerds, like us, to stare and enjoy. Let's get right down to the numbers.

Last month, once again, Marvel took the top spot.

No Caption Provided

DC takes the top four out of five of the top ten, with BATMAN #29 looming over all other books for March.

No Caption Provided

Four of the top ten selling graphic novels are Image books, which is not unusual for that company.

No Caption Provided

Ever wonder how many books each company ships out every month?

No Caption Provided

How do they calculate this information? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during January to December 2013, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

What are your thoughts on all these numbers? What's your predictions for this month?

How the hell does marvel ALWAYS stay at the top? you'd think that the top ranking would fluctuate all the time, but marvels at the number 1 ranking all the time, WTF???

I come here to comment that I am happy to see Silver Surfer and Daredevil as high as they were. I'm generally a bigger fan of DC but that was cool to see. Then I start reading comments and realize how sick of dumb fanboy arguing over who is better I am. Each company has merit. Stop it.

DC's been really falling off the edge lately. I mean, even Batman's sales are lowering because of the frickin' Zero Year, which is an amazing story, but I really want a present day story. Also, Forever Evil is lasting forever, I mean it should've been over in March, but now it's extended to the end of May. To be honest, I love the New 52 but so many things have been messed up. Maybe they should've taken a Marvel NOW! route instead. Teen Titans really needs a reboot though, messing up so many characters. They should make the Kid Flash actually Inertia pretending the whole time and actually introduce a Impulse Bart Allen sometime in the Flash comic. Kill Evil Superboy and bring the other one back and do a retcon that brings him back to be related to Superman and Luthor like Pre-N52. Retcon Beast Boy to his old origin in Pre-N52 and make him green. For Solstice, unless there's a really good way to bring her back after what happened, just let that character stay out because she's so ruined. If there's a new title for Teen Titans (New Teen Titans leak/rumor from Bleeding Cool), then the only characters you really need to stay are Red Robin, Wonder Girl, Beast Boy, and Raven. Maybe Superboy, and the rest can die, except maybe Bunker because I love him as a character.

Sincerly, we all know he's the best seller because he write Batman. Even Nocenti writing Batman would be the top seller.

Peter David and Greg Rucka are from Marvel.

As I said my comment was in response to you're first comment if you want to mention Peter David and Greg Rucka then mention them to the other guy not me. While I agree that he became a best seller writer for his work on Batman but he's Superman series is also outselling the other Superman books by a huge number.

Apparently not. I guess some people live vicariously through comic sales. The saddest thing is, I often tell people "Comics aren't for children, haven't been for a long time." Threads like this make me want to re-think my position of that.

Yeah mine too. It doesn't help that certain comic sites also feed into this "Marvel vs DC," fan ego war, CBM is the worst offender for this. I don't understand why people can't be happy that we are living in age where comics are profitable. Who cares who has more movies out or who does this better, this is a golden age for comics of every kind.

@i3io_hazard: I am actually happy DC doesn't resort to stopping titles that are doing good and relaunching them with new #1's. I like seeing the titles actually progress with their numbering. Its fun to see the number go up each month of my favorite comic.

Marvel comics are so much better then DC. Not to mention DC has like 10 good heroes tops that aren't just coninuation of other heroes i.e Super/Bat family. Majority of DCs heroes are crap which is why the DCCU will never be as good as the MCU DC doesn't have enough good character worthy of a movie while Marvel has tons and they don't even own the rights to their biggest characters Marvel>DC.

Ugh this stupid freaking Marve/DC war. At least people on Marvels side give reason to why Marvel is better right now while DC fans name like DCs only good titles which is like 3-5 good titles tops while Marvel is killing it in comics and obviousl movies.

HAHAHAHAHA...You want to talk about events and good quality????? PLSSSS!!!...look at Marvel's last events!!!!!!! (Age of "Garbage",AvX....) ...only Infinity managed to be MEDIOCRE at best!!!..and they are making one after another because they don't know how to spell quality!!!

LOL again at Marvel NOW being qualitative!!!! Nice jokes....You should tell others as well...They will get a good laugh out of them!!!!

I find event comics in general to be lacking at best. That's why I usually avoid them. Now in terms of comparing Marvel NOW to the New 52, are you going to offer anything substantive to back up your opinion?

Frankly I find the muddled continuity (5 Green Lanterns from Earth in 5 years? 4 Robins in that time frame? Yet no past Teen Titans?), constant backtracking (see past Teen Titans existing, and Tim Drake as Robin), exclusion of some characters (Cassandra Cain, Donna Troy) while promoting uninteresting ones (looking at you,Vibe), and overall focus on T&A in things like Red Hood, Teen Titans, and basically anything Scott Lobdell is involved in over actually good stories to be major turn offs. Combine that with watered down, paint by numbers stories in Justice League, Justice League of America, Forever Evil, Superman, and others, and yeah, personally I'll take Marvel NOW. DC has a few gems left, like Batman by Snyder, but few and far between. Meanwhile, Dan Slott has been killing it on Spider-Man, and the first issue of Silver Surfer was a blast. Hawkeye and Black Widow have been great, as has the all-female X-Men book. Deadpool has also been solid from its start. I could go on.

@flying_j87: Jeez, DC fans are grasping at straws lmao. DC puts out more books (quantity) and Marvel still has a 10%+ greater share of the market. Simple truth, while DC has some great talent and titles, Marvel has a bunch. If DC wins in the top 5, but Marvel dominates the top 30? Pretty clear who is putting out the greater number of "quality" titles. Truth.

Agreed. And as someone whose favourite characters are from DC, seeing the low quality in the last few years breaks my heart. Seeing how DC treats many of its writers (the ones not named Johns, Morrison, or more recently Snyder and Lemire) just angers me.

That's a huge gap between DC and Marvel, really though it was going to be close for DC :( I hope animal-man's last issue sold a lot, it usually doesn't sell too much.

Marvel consistently outsells DC by about these numbers... except for the first few months of the DC reboot.

Quite frankly I'm shocked that DC captured the top 4 slots. Superman Unchained is a gimmicky retread of old stories and Forever Evil really is taking FOR EVER.

Batman? Sure thing. Batman can be a quality comic and usually is. Sandman? Sure thing - it has an audience.

But DC has been systematically mishandling about everything outside of the Justice League books (counting Batman and a few Superman books in here) nu52wise.

In contrast I do worry that Marvel's mishandling the F4 since Hickman left and they've stumbled a bit on their big Inhuman rollout... but apart from the occasional good book getting canned because of lack of sales (Defenders, before that Defenders, so forth and so on) Marvel really does seem to be more fun.

Compare Teen Titans (ending because sales won't support this popular franchise!) to Avengers Arena (ended because it was scheduled to end and has a new sequel coming out). Both featured teenage characters, although Marvels skewed almost entirely to the "new character" angle, featuring the cast of the horrible Avengers Academy, the quality but somehow not still ongoing Runaways, and a host of NEW characters and one-shot quality old characters. Both featured a bad guy pitting good guys against one another.

Avengers Arena was never my favorite book of the month, but it was entertaining and interesting and did a lot of good character development (certainly more than in all of the issues of Avengers Academy... sorry chumps). In contrast Teen Titans has pretty much ruined every single character on the team, from douche Raven to douche Kid Flash to douche that girl who likes kid flash and murders optionally to hang out with him to kicking out the gay kid for no reason to losing the bug lady and never mentioning her again.

Oh, and then there's the fact that a nearly decade old Teen Titan show was so popular and well conceived that it spawned a spinoff (well, the comedy shorts spawned a full series). When you compare the animated Teen Titans series to the current nu52 one... it's like spring vs being hit in the teeth with a wrench.

Imagine if DC had put Snyder and Lee on Superman or Action Comics. Instead of, that is, creating another title which takes away production resources for other great characters

Extoll its virtues that they may; defenders can't negate the fact that DC has every excuse to put top talent on flagship titles. It's not to the level of Marvel by any means but DC clearly whiffs on an opportunity to add to the great tradition of creators crafting story-arcs that add to its history.

Creating new titles featuring new characters (or under-used ones) is a perfect way to bring in new readers and have a big tent for everyone to gather under. Supes though, isn't wanting for titles or exposure. What flagship titles do deserve - is top tier talent being contracted for a book which will hold weight. It's a shame for those of us whom act not only as readers - but collectors.
