Top Selling Comics & Publisher Market Share: March 2014

What were the number one sellers for March?

No Caption Provided

The numbers from March 2014! Diamond Comic Distributors has compiled the data from March and placed into awesome tables for math nerds, like us, to stare and enjoy. Let's get right down to the numbers.

Last month, once again, Marvel took the top spot.

No Caption Provided

DC takes the top four out of five of the top ten, with BATMAN #29 looming over all other books for March.

No Caption Provided

Four of the top ten selling graphic novels are Image books, which is not unusual for that company.

No Caption Provided

Ever wonder how many books each company ships out every month?

No Caption Provided

How do they calculate this information? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during January to December 2013, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

What are your thoughts on all these numbers? What's your predictions for this month?

That is a surprisingly large difference in dollar and unit share between Marvel and DC.

I figured the delay would bump the demand for Overture down. It says something about the quality of the property that it didn't.

Damn DC took top 4. Nice. Sandman sold real good. wow. Awesome to see Daredevil and Silver Sufer make in in top 10, no no Moon Knight? damn.

I'm sad that Moon Knight #1 wasn't up there

I thought the same.

That is a surprisingly large difference in dollar and unit share between Marvel and DC.

Not really surprising. Marvel releases like 100 books and a lot of they are bi-weekly and also 7/8 Marvel books are 4$ while DC has mostly 3$ comics

Plus Marvel titles are more consistent across the top 50, DC titles tend to wane in popularity after there big guns.

@captainhoopla: canceling a book and immediately relaunch it with a new number one or in this particular case, launching new number one books, feed the speculators and the hype of the fans, generating that gap between the Big Two.

Also still a shame that Valiant is not on that chart :(

@madeinbangladesh: Actually Marvel shipped out less titles then DC last month. Marvel 75 to DC 84 I think it said.

@nahuel: I agree with you. I'm sure all of the new number ones played a big part in the difference. The bad news with that success is that the renumbering and relaunching likely won't be going away anytime soon.

@madeinbangladesh: Actually DC released 84 books compared to 75 for Marvel.

All I know is that is by far one of the biggest percentage differences I think I've seen between the big two.

Lol, yeah, Marvel sold 10% more comics. Quality = Review and Quantity = Top selling and market share. Review are showing what's good comics, selling a lot of comics from one title doesn't equal quality. No one can read the title before buying it.

Very interesting. Especially that DC has 4 of the top 5 books but is losing by a decent chunk in overall market share. I think that speaks to Marvel's ability to get people interested in the second tier characters (i.e. characters that aren't Batmen or Spidermen). I'd love to see digital sales factored into this.

Also would Forever evil just end already, damn.

Yep..if one actually cares who "wins"...apparently, some do. I don't know about you guys, but who wins in comic sales between Marvel and DC (Or Valiant and Image) makes zero difference in my life. I've given both companies plenty of my money over the years. If I worked for Marvel or DC, then these numbers might mean something, beyond being fun to check out.

I'm sure Marvel got a pretty big boost with the "All-New Marvel Now" and all them #1's,

and they still couldn't bring down Batman, Superman, Forever Evil, or the Sandman. Interesting.

LOL, marvel owning dollar share doesnt mean theyre kicking DCs ass. Marvel relaunches titles likes it no ones business, they have 10 avenger books that sell because avengers is in the name, and they have more 3.99 books

Batman still owns comic books, when was the last time batman wasnt the number one selling book?

i don't care for the dc/marvel feud, pretty retarded if you ask me.

lol ya, I don't think I'd call Forever Evil "quality." In fact, most of the "New" 52 is pretty mediocre. Meanwhile, Marvel NOW has been killing it in terms of quality. A few duds here and there, but generally much better than DC. And they didn't have to do a half-a**ed reboot to do it.

Imagine if DC had put Snyder and Lee on Superman or Action Comics. Instead of, that is, creating another title which takes away production resources for other great characters

Extoll its virtues that they may; defenders can't negate the fact that DC has every excuse to put top talent on flagship titles. It's not to the level of Marvel by any means but DC clearly whiffs on an opportunity to add to the great tradition of creators crafting story-arcs that add to its history.

Creating new titles featuring new characters (or under-used ones) is a perfect way to bring in new readers and have a big tent for everyone to gather under. Supes though, isn't wanting for titles or exposure. What flagship titles do deserve - is top tier talent being contracted for a book which will hold weight. It's a shame for those of us whom act not only as readers - but collectors.

@flying_j87: Jeez, DC fans are grasping at straws lmao. DC puts out more books (quantity) and Marvel still has a 10%+ greater share of the market. Simple truth, while DC has some great talent and titles, Marvel has a bunch. If DC wins in the top 5, but Marvel dominates the top 30? Pretty clear who is putting out the greater number of "quality" titles. Truth.

That's a huge gap between DC and Marvel, really though it was going to be close for DC :( I hope animal-man's last issue sold a lot, it usually doesn't sell too much.

Marvel consistently outsells DC by about these numbers... except for the first few months of the DC reboot.

Quite frankly I'm shocked that DC captured the top 4 slots. Superman Unchained is a gimmicky retread of old stories and Forever Evil really is taking FOR EVER.

Batman? Sure thing. Batman can be a quality comic and usually is. Sandman? Sure thing - it has an audience.

But DC has been systematically mishandling about everything outside of the Justice League books (counting Batman and a few Superman books in here) nu52wise.

In contrast I do worry that Marvel's mishandling the F4 since Hickman left and they've stumbled a bit on their big Inhuman rollout... but apart from the occasional good book getting canned because of lack of sales (Defenders, before that Defenders, so forth and so on) Marvel really does seem to be more fun.

Compare Teen Titans (ending because sales won't support this popular franchise!) to Avengers Arena (ended because it was scheduled to end and has a new sequel coming out). Both featured teenage characters, although Marvels skewed almost entirely to the "new character" angle, featuring the cast of the horrible Avengers Academy, the quality but somehow not still ongoing Runaways, and a host of NEW characters and one-shot quality old characters. Both featured a bad guy pitting good guys against one another.

Avengers Arena was never my favorite book of the month, but it was entertaining and interesting and did a lot of good character development (certainly more than in all of the issues of Avengers Academy... sorry chumps). In contrast Teen Titans has pretty much ruined every single character on the team, from douche Raven to douche Kid Flash to douche that girl who likes kid flash and murders optionally to hang out with him to kicking out the gay kid for no reason to losing the bug lady and never mentioning her again.

Oh, and then there's the fact that a nearly decade old Teen Titan show was so popular and well conceived that it spawned a spinoff (well, the comedy shorts spawned a full series). When you compare the animated Teen Titans series to the current nu52 one... it's like spring vs being hit in the teeth with a wrench.

Agreed. And as someone whose favourite characters are from DC, seeing the low quality in the last few years breaks my heart. Seeing how DC treats many of its writers (the ones not named Johns, Morrison, or more recently Snyder and Lemire) just angers me.
