Top Selling Comics & Publisher Market Share: July 2014

See what the top books and companies were for July.

The numbers for July are in! Diamond Comic Distributors has compiled the data from July and placed into awesome tables for math nerds, like us, to stare and enjoy. Let's get right down to the numbers.

Marvel takes the top spot for July, once again, with DC falling a bit behind.

No Caption Provided

It's pretty obvious that ROCKET RACCOON #1 took first place, especially after it was announced that the first issue sold 300,000 copies.

No Caption Provided

Image comics continues to do extremely well in the trade market with volume 21 of THE WALKING DEAD taking the top spot and two volumes of SAGA making the list.

No Caption Provided

If you were wondering how many books each of the companies shipped out, here's the numbers. There's only a difference of one item between Marvel and DC.

No Caption Provided

How do they calculate this information? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during January to December 2013, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

What are your thoughts on all these numbers? What's your predictions for this month?

@madeinbangladesh: That is crazy about Rocket, although Nerd Block was responsible for a nice portion of those sales. Awesome to see Harley Quinn on there too.

I love that we live in a time where Rocket can dethrone Batman. Granted, it was a number one issue, but still. Also, Batman's issue was a finale. Nice.

How many more #1's can Marvel put out? Their highest numbered comic in the top 10 is an event.

I just love how people keep going on and on about Raccoon beating Batman but ignore completely that he beat every other book as well. I just dont understand CVs' obsession with knocking Batman down a peg. It doesn't even matter anyway,Iron Man in MCUs biggest character and he sells less than Batgirl,Raccoon will be lucky to have a book by this time next year.

@entropy_aegis: keep in mind that the Iron Man comic is trash.

Also, do you ever think about the fact that maybe, just maybe, people are remarking upon Batman being beaten not because they dislike him but because he is the character to beat? Who frequently gets the top spot?

@entropy_aegis: That's because outside of non comic fans, very very very few people like Iron Man. Besides it's not a bad thing for people to get sick of seeing too much Batman.

If Marvel would quit flooding the market with #1 issues then the Raccoon would not have been number one. I think it also doesn't hurt that there was a Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming out at the same time this comic was put out. I am not saying its a bad comic at all. But frankly Batman sales a lot better then most of the Marvel's titles. Also Marvel jacks up their prices as well. Also saying that all of DC's characters are trash is low. Batman clearly has staying power as he has been around for 75 years, which is longer then Marvel has been around. Also Scott Snyder is a heck of a writer and what he has done with Batman over at DC is pretty remarkable. Also, Batman, and several Batman titles are usually in the top ten list of sales most months.

@marcosvergara14: That would only make an impact in the dollar share for the month and not the unit share. Marvel still shipped 7 percent more units than DC.

I just can't believe it because of how disturbing that book is. Harley herself is an eyesore with an ear bleeding voice, who in the most recent issue had a "Poop Flinger", and every issue has a stuffed rotting woodchuck, how is that fun? I'm not trying to ruin that book for anyone but I can't see anything enjoyable about that series, or Harley herself.

This is only the second time I can remember buying a book that made it to #1.

And the first one I can remember that held up on a second reading.

I figured Rocket Raccoon would of been 1 of the top 2 or 3 but it surprises me people still buy the never ending marvel crossovers. Its sad we never get to see great books like Green Arrow and other less popular heroes make it on these lists...it always seems to be Batman, Spiderman, Justice League, and whatever marvel crossover is going on. I dropped Batman shortly after Zero Year but Im glad to see it still sold well throughout its run.

@edgejohn: That is a pretty immature thing to say. It cracks me up how people get so wrapped in a rivalry like it is a sporting event. You hope a whole company fails so there is job loss and consumers lose out on something they like. Wait, I am probably talking to a 16 year old with the mentality of a 10 yr old.

Didn't a company that buy most of those to give out free to customers creating an artificial sale figure for this issue.

I'm happy for Rocket. It was a great issue, issue 2 was excellent as well.

On another note, I wish Mat would wait another week for these monthly sales articles to include the numbers for all titles. Just listing the top ten is pretty predictable.

@novemberx2: Umm, I'm pretty sure Marvel didn't print a hundred thousand copies and give them to Loot Crate for free. Meaning they ordered and paid for those copies thus constituting a sale. Why should an article about sales figures be amended to reflect this?

Glad to see that Grayson sold well in July, I hope the sales won't drop by too much in August, the comic book is really good so far, best thing that happened to Dick since the New52.

True, at first I was a bit disturbed because of some of the covers but then I decided to read it and I must say the book is really funny and I'm glad I gave it a chance.

I guess the reason why Rocket Raccoon sold so well was because it was a #1 issue and Guardians of the Galaxy happened to premiere around the same time the issue came out.
