Top Selling Comics & Publisher Market Share: December 2013

Find out what were the top selling books of December 2013 here.

December 2013 was a pretty weird month for books, with two weeks in a row of holiday releases. Diamond Comic Distributors has compiled the data from that month and released it for everyone who enjoys lists and numbers. Let's take a look at who came out on top for December.

Marvel takes the top spot for December.

Marvel also had the top two books for December with ORIGIN II #1 and AVENGERS #24.NOW.

Marvel grabbed 4 out of the top 10 spots. The other 6 spots went to DC books. Three of these DC books are tie-ins to their current story line "Forever Evil."

As for trades, last month, FABLES Volume 19, which collects issues #124-#129, grabbed the top slot, followed by ADVENTURE TIME: PIXEL PRINCESS, and original graphic novel. The trade market is anyone's game, and the list below shows that.

It's amazing to see WALKING DEAD: DAYS GONE BYE still grabbing a top ten slot, even after a decade of the release of the first issue and nine years after the original release of the trade.

Just in case you were wondering how many books and graphic novels each company ships, here's that info for your as well.

How do they calculate this information?

It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during January to December 2013, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

What are your thoughts on this information? What's your predictions for this month?

Happy to see The Good, The Bad & The Ugly trade get some love. Somewhat surprised ORIGIN II #1 took the top spot.

Wonder how these numbers compare to say..10-15 years ago. Is the comic biz as a whole doing better or worse than it was then?

Interesting.

Wow DC is seriously behind Marvel. Which is kind of suprising seeing how Superman Unchained & Batman are in the top 3 & Forever Evil in the top 10.

How is IDW ahead of Image?

Not that I prefer one over the other, but my general thought would have been Image ahead of IDW as well.
