Top Selling Comics & Publisher Market Share: August 2014

See what the top books and companies were for August

No Caption Provided

The numbers for August are in! Diamond Comic Distributors has compiled the data from August and placed into awesome tables for math nerds, like us, to stare and enjoy. Let's get right down to the numbers.

Marvel Comics is once again the top dog for the month of August.

No Caption Provided

Included this month, from the folks at Diamond, is a couple of pie charts showing the dollar share and unit share. Check it out in glorious color!

No Caption Provided

BATMAN continues to stay in the top 3 of the top 10 books. It should also be noted that THE WALKING DEAD #130 makes its way onto the top 10 list.

No Caption Provided

Normally, the top 10 trade list is dominated by Image, but this month is pretty split between DC, Marvel, and Image, with THANOS: THE INFINITY REVELATION OGN taking the number one spot.

No Caption Provided

There's only one item difference between Marvel and DC this month. Here's what everyone shipped out for August.

No Caption Provided

How do they calculate this information? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during January to December 2013, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

What are your thoughts on all these numbers? What's your predictions for this month?

I guess the hype that Valiant is becoming as big as the BIG TWO is nothing but HYPE. Image is still holding the throne of being the biggest outside of the BIG TWO. Plus, I like getting a confirmation that besides Batman sales, MARVEL is beating DC. I don't say it to brag. I just like to point out the facts of the matter.

I honestly would prefer if Detective Comics (comics) would be beating MARVEL. I always viewed The House of Ideas to be the underdogs but ever since (evil) Disney bought them things changed. Marvel stopped being independent. Oh well...(+)

I've never seen anyone try to claim Valiant was going to sell as much as DC or Marvel.

If its a matter of quality neither Marvel or DC hold that title either so...

I don't want to go back and forth about this. I trust you haven't seen anyone claim Valiant was going to sell more than DC or MARVEL. However, I did see quite a few posts about how Valiant was probably selling more than Image, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite, et cetera. I remember for sure seeing like 2 posts about how Valiant was going to be a part of the BIG TWO and make it THE BIG THREE.

I thought it was a unrealistic statement and I was sure IMAGE was still holding the title of being the most selling company out of the Big Two.

However, I don't deny that Valiant has quality over quantity.

@arturocalakayvee: I am interested to know why people treat comics like a sporting event and a competition? It is odd to me. Do you have stock in Marvel? Or is it that you don't watch any sports or play sports to get that inner competition satisfied. Do you jump up and down when Ford cars outsell GM?

Last month I got Justice League United, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Guardians, and Spider-man. Would've got Batman & Robin, Harley Quinn, Earth 2, and Silver Surfer though they were either sold out or I didn't have the money to buy it (Earth 2).

I do regret buying Spider-man. The story was interesting though the art was meh. I just felt really weird and distracting in a Spider-man book. While the writing was fun and interesting it wasn't really what I thought it'd be. I was kinda mixed on it. I kinda wish I got Earth 2 instead. Though I heard the series will be kinda messed up soon.

Well considering the difference between the amount of titles the top two put out was the only magazine either publisher publishes, it looks like they're putting out a pretty darn equal amount of stuff.

How the heck is Eaglemoss regularly in the top ten? Do they even publish anything other than Batman Automobilia magazines (whatever those are) and Marvel chess figurine collector magazines. Do either of those things really have that big a following?

And how does Harley Quinn constantly maintain a slot in the top 10. I can't possibly comprehend why anyone likes that character. But then again a lot of the characters I have a strong dislike for are the ones who are very popular such as Joker, Lex Luthor, Wolverine, Deadpool, etc.

Thats the same thing i always wonder about Eaglemoss & this Random House now lol. How these companies manage to beat out Valiant, Avatar Press, Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Oni etc is always a mystery.

I'm choosing to believe that the only reason Batman took the top spot is because the artist from Black Science drew it.

What? Don't look at me like that. Let a Black Science fanboy have his delusions! ;)

Don't know about sales but this issue was the best New 52 Batman issue. Also can't believe Harley is still on the Top 10, I think I have to pick it up.

The fanboy war in this is cancerous. Bunch of over-sized manchildren arguing over who is more elite as a fan, and that the other person likes trash. This kind of discussion is the reason I am slowly but surely falling off comics in the first place. Truly the most toxic community I have ever been a part of.

im sorry but all i saw on this was BATMAN SPIDER-MAN BATMAN SPIDER-MAN BATMAN related comics lol. Im glad Multiuniversity made it in the top 5. Hopefully DC will flat out leave that as a stand alone elseworld book and not Incorporate it into ANY New 52 books from here on out.

Also, way to go Harley. Hopefully they're no plans to reunite her with the Joker. In fact i'll be more impressed if DC tease that idea only to allow Harley to knock him on his a$$ and with emphatic NO

Lol what? Multiversity is a new 52 book, its purpose is to expand the other 50 universes.

It's a shame... X-O Manowar and Armour Hunters have been kicking SO much ass!

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Armor Hunters sell out. Valiant just doesn't have the cash to put a large number of copies in print.

I just mostly cry to get people's attention to them.

I image they would have respectable digital sales. I don't buy paper comics myself soo...

It is disappointing that Rocket's extreme popularity was temporary but it's to be expected I guess. Maybe he'll get a more sustained boost after the cartoon and a second movie.

@lvenger: IDW really is underrated I their titles. TMNT is one of my most anticipated titles every month. Such a great book.

Also, sad everyone simply jumped on the Rocket #1 bandwagon and didn't get #2. It's such a fun book.

It really is, I have yet to read TMNT #37 with Shredder and Kraang but I hear it's really good.

It's a remarkably underrated company IMHO. TMNT is easily one of the best ongoings in the market, I hear their Transformers, Godzilla and Ghostbuster stuff is solid and they've got interesting creator owned work too like Locke and Key.

If I'm not wrong, IDW is basically now the go-to company for licensed comics, taking over from Dark Horse which in turn took over from Marvel for that spot.

I guess it is. Technically they do have the most licensed comic book properties out there and I can't think of anyone else that has more licensed comics than IDW have.

No surprise there.

Marvel has had the No.1 spot for Dollar share for over a two years now. (consecutively?)

and im pretty sure DC wont top them anytime soon imo. but single issues DC still dominates. Batman/Justice League/Superman are always in the top ten. and now we can include Morrison's Multiversity to it as well.

Marvel will always be in the top because all their books are 4$ while DC has a lot of 3$ books. That's why I prefer DC more. MARVEL is more greedy than DC.

i pay more attention to units sold. because of that fact.

and still Marvel sells more units. idc whichever ones on top tbh. literally 80% of my pull atm is dark horse and image titles so.

but yes what you say is 99.99% true.

i agree.

@arturocalakayvee: yeah great content....for example ? Iron Man comics not so good, Captain America people seem 50-50 about Rick Remender direction, Thor now will become female which Thor fans doesn't like, Wolverine will die soon which is publicity stunt gimmick, Spider-man people still 50-50 about Dan Slott butcher Spider supporting characters like Black Cat etc. All Marvel big guns not doing so well. Meanwhile DC big gun like Batman is positively receive, Superman which is on Geoff Johns which is positive receive, people love Azarello Wonder Woman, Justice League comics is top 10 comics sales while Avengers is not even in top 20 for months after months. All DC big guns is safe hand compare to Marvel big guns
